One of Us
Hey, it's Daniel here, back with another edition of the "Lost" Diary.
Last week I asked you guys about your favorite connection between two castaways. A lot of you went with Jack and Claire as siblings. That one is OK, but I have to go with Libby in the insane asylum with Hurley. I still want an answer to that one.
For all of you "Lost" Diary newbies, here's how it goes. I gather with a group of friends watching "Lost," writing what happens on the show as it happens, and throwing in my two cents along the way. This week I am with Ari, Lauren and April. Lauren had two glasses of wine beforehand, so I don't think she'll be contributing anything meaningful tonight. Let's roll:

10:00 -- Jack and Kate decide to go get firewood, leaving Sayid and Juliet behind. Do you think they'll exchange pleasantries or will Sayid just go straight into interrogation mode?
10:01 -- The correct answer was "interrogation mode." I'm glad Sayid doesn't believe in verbal foreplay.

10:02 -- Before Juliet's flashback starts, I have to say I am beyond excited for a Juliet backstory. She's a converted Other, who obviously isn't quite with the program. I am dying to see how she first got to the island, when she realized what was really going on, when she found out she wasn't allowed to leave, and what happened to turn her into a mega-bitch. If one or more of those things isn't answered, I can't see how this episode can get any better than a D from me. Alright, on with the flashback.
10:03 -- Not much time has passed since we last saw Juliet in her flashback, and it's our first glimpse at what is probably a Hanso Foundation building -- with security to the max. No shocker there. Juliet says she won't fit in there, and Lauren says it's because of her perm. Women.
10:04 -- "If I told you who I was, if I told you everything that I know, you'd kill me." -- Juliet.
10:04 -- "What do you think I'd do if you don't." -- Sayid. I got three words for you: IT IS ON!!!
10:05 -- Wow, ok, so Jack is immediately taking Juliet's side over Sayid's. To call Jack's loyalties "flexible" would be an understatement. He's the kind of guy in college who would completely ditch his friends once he started dating some hot sorority chick. Then when she cheated on him and broke up with him, he'd come to hang out and just say, "What's up?" -- like nothing ever happened. Hated those guys.
10:08 -- Claire is getting sick. Does this have anything to do with the mysterious "sickness" from last season?
10:09 -- So when Juliet described the things "her people" did to Sayid and Kate, she mentioned handcuffing Sayid to a swing-set and handcuffing herself to Kate. Hey sister, that's the LEAST of what YOUR PEOPLE have done.
10:10 -- "Time flies once you're there," "you're going to want to be asleep for the trip" and "it can be kind of intense." Those are some serious WTF? lines right there.
10:11 -- "You created life, where life wasn't supposed to be." -- Alpert. I hate to reveal my inner geek, but wasn't that a line from "Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan"?
10:13 -- "Lost" gives me chills during moments that would seem completely ordinary to people who have never seen the show before. Watching Juliet meet Henry Gale for the first time was one of them. Goosebumps.
10:16 -- How many times can people on this island reunite with other people on this island with cheesy music playing in the background? This show is averaging like a reunion a week right now. Debate in the room: whether or not Sawyer is happy to see Jack. I say yes; Sawyer wanted no part of being the leader. That's not his style.
10:17 -- "What the hell is she doing here?" -- Sawyer. To be expected.

10:21 -- "I had the day off." -- Juliet. Pretty funny. One of the subtle ways you can tell a good episode of "Lost" is how many great quotes (not including stupid Sawyerisms) the show gives us. This is one is on fire right now.
10:22 -- "Hey you're a doctor, right? So how come I've been on this island for almost three months and I haven't lost any weight?" -- Hurley. OK, I made that one up.
10:23 -- So the scene between Juliet and Henry Gale got real interesting, real fast. Apparently Juliet was brought to the island because the women there die when they get pregnant; no real shocker there. Henry Gale says that Jacob said he would take care of Rachel's cancer himself. Who is this guy? He can cure cancer? Oh, and remember this line of Henry Gale's from two weeks ago: "I find out what he's emotionally invested it and then I exploit it." Juliet is emotionally invested in her sister, wouldn't you say?
10:26 -- "I want to ask you why you're fighting every single one of us and sticking up for one of them." -- Sawyer. Good question, James.
10:28 -- Juliet knows what's wrong with Claire. Of course she does, how else is she supposed to earn everyone's trust?
10:29 -- "Because I did it to her." -- Juliet. Convenient.
10:32 -- Juliet tells the long and wordy story of why Claire is sick, which fills in a few of the Ethan gaps from the previous seasons. Maybe he wasn't as crazy as we thought. Random question: remember when we first learned about the Others, they seemed to have superhuman strength -- what ever happened with that?

10:35 -- So Juliet and Goodwin were knocking boots. Juliet is nearing her three-year anniversary on the island and I might learn the answers to all my questions. I am downright giddy.
10:36 -- Another top notch scene between Juliet and Henry Gale. Did he cure Rachel's cancer? And if he is the grand wizard of cancer, why did he get it? Even he doesn't know. Is it possible that, in some way, the island gave him cancer as some kind of punishment? I know, I'm reaching.
10:42 -- Sayid and Sawyer trailed Juliet to the marked tree with the medical supplies. They aren't exactly the trusting type, and who can blame them?
10:43 -- Juliet's speech to Sayid and Sawyer just blew my mind. She just absolutely silenced them. And when she just reached down and took the case from Sawyer, that took cajones. She may still be evil, evil, evil -- but I love her. Serious kudos for that scene.
10:45 -- YES! I was so waiting for them to revisit the opening scene of season three. I love when flashbacks get all "Back to the Future II" on us and start showing the same scenes again, but giving us new info.
10:46 -- Hey, Mikhail is back. I kinda missed the guy. Quite the setup he has there.
10:47 -- Henry Gale kept his word. Rachel is still alive and she had a son. Juliet wants to leave so she can see her sister, but Henry won't let her because it wasn't "their agreement."
10:48 -- "Who knows? Maybe there is even one on that plane." -- Henry Gale.
10:49 -- Juliet returns to give Claire the shot. Honestly, I don't love or hate Claire -- I don't care which way this goes.
10:53-- And Claire is fine, which makes Charlie happy, which makes me mad. If he isn't going to die, I prefer he be miserable.
10:54 -- "You want to get off this island more than anything in the world. Makes you one of us." -- Jack, to Juliet.

10:56 -- Oh ...
10:57 -- ... my ...
10:58 -- ... God!
10:59 -- EVIL! EVIL! EVIL! EVIL!
11:00 -- "See you in a week." Henry Gale, to Juliet.
I am going to come right out and say it: this was a top five all-time episode for me. I have three reasons why:
1) This episode actually delivered in the way that it should have. I mentioned in the beginning that I had four questions about Juliet I wanted answered, and they actually got answered. There is something to be said for an episode of "Lost" giving you what you're expecting.
2) I counted six scenes that left me completely amazed: The whole sequence that revolved around Juliet coming to the island and meeting Henry Gale, Juliet and Henry Gale at the beach, when Henry Gale found out he had a tumor, when Henry Gale showed Juliet her sister, when Juliet lectured Sayid and Sawyer, and when we saw Juliet and Henry Gale discuss their plan. I don't know if any other episode can say that.
3) Let's say, for argument's sake, that "Lost" has 10 categories you would grade an episode in -- things like writing, acting, shocking moments, etc. This episode probably wouldn't get an A+ in any one of them, but it definitely would get at least a B+ in all of them. To me, there were no weaknesses. Put that together, and this episode is an A+ for me.
So what is Juliet after on the beach? Sun? Aaron? Claire? Is it possible that Jack is in on it? One minute Juliet hates Henry Gale, the next she is doing whatever he asks. I don't get it, but I love it.
My question to you this week is this: Obviously Juliet is evil, at least in the sense that she is undermining what the Losties do. That being said, what do you think of her as a character? See you next week.
Comments
Okay, yes, I agree with you 100%. There were questions I wanted answered about Juliette and I got them. I wanted to know why a fertility specialist was on the island for so long and what they wanted with Claire. How she got there and if she was good or evil. And for the first 55 minutes of this episode I had it made up in my mind that she was a good person. AND. THEN. THE. EVILNESS! Did you see the look on her face as she was tying up her tarp at the end?
I'm guessing that Ben made her one last promise to fake this week for whatever it is the others want. Like, there is still a way off the island and he will give it to her as long as she does one last mission.
Also, I was like, Sayid and Sawyer are such egotistical shmucks to be so mean to Juliette. But dudes, they were so right on and I also think Kate knows she's no good too and will not be fooled like Hurley, Claire, Charlie, etc.
I guess that Juliette knows Sun is preggers, it was mysterious to me how she was ignored by Juliette.
This episode rocked my socks. I know it's a good episode if I can't stop thinking about it once I turn off the TV and try to fall asleep.

And to answer your final questions. I hated Juliette when she was offering Jack sandwiches in the shark tank but now, Love her character. She has so much depth and always leaves me guessing. Locke is still my man though.

The first two words out of my mouth, immediately after the show ended, out of homage to you and your blog: "A PLUS!!!"
What an OUTSTANDING EPISODE!! That ending was GENIUS. See, THIS episode is EXACTLY why all the haters needed to relax and let things play out. I can only imagine where the show is going to go from here. AWESOME!!
Posted by: drew_ill | April 12, 2007 04:57 PM
Holy crap! The last scene took the breath out of me! And I fully agree with your three reasons.
Here's my question: How much is Goodwin a factor in Juliet's actions toward the Losties? I mean, she was bangin' him, and they did kill him...
Posted by: CB | April 12, 2007 05:08 PM
Couldn't Juliette still be playing Ben? My guess is that she is evil but you still never know.
Posted by: Addicted | April 12, 2007 05:13 PM
I really love Juliette so I am really bummed that she is so EVIL!!!!!She is hardcore. So, we finally know why she was brought there. Its all about the babies. I am wondering about Kate getting pregnant. Im pretty sure they are not practicing safe sex! So what is this implant that they put in Clair? And Jack, so trusting of his new woman...Boy is he going to be in the dog house when everyone finds out about Juliette. And what is her loyalty to Benry? Besides saving her sister, Which I wonder if that was really her or somekind of computer generated video..Benry is pretty smart. And what is there "history" between Benry and Juliette that Tom referred to when he was talking to Jack after Benrys surgery? And where the hell is Rose and Bernard???? Come on, they need to throw us a bone. So only 5 epesodes left...say its not so...please dont let us hang for months like last time..that was unbearable. Aplus episode. Cant wait till next week!!! Oh, and who is Jacob ???I have no clue , and then you mentioned Alpert????Please fill me in.

Juliet is evil, but she is also a compelling character. I tried to explain her to a friend after last night's episode and all I could come up with is that she is selfish at best. Sure, she loves and misses her sister, and will do anything to get off the island, but come on! What a tramp. Jack's gonna be pissed when the week is up.
As a sort of P.S. why is it, again, that you hate Charlie so much?
Posted by: Jessica | April 12, 2007 05:31 PM
1st off A++++ episode. 2nd-why does everyone think that Juliet believes Ben, when he showed her the xrays and said the cancer came back,(that could of been anyones xrays), and then told her he could cure it. She is a scientist first and for most, she should of know better. I think she will end up turning on Ben...they make her out evil one week, then show her weakness, then make her bad again..it would be awesome to see Bens face if she betrays him!
Posted by: still lost w/lost | April 12, 2007 05:37 PM
The biggest question that came from this ep for me is, "Which side is Jack really on". His conversation with Juliet in no way negates that he could be on the others side. This is LOST at it's best!
Posted by: jwaller50 | April 12, 2007 05:44 PM
My own personal opinion...Ben wanted her to infiltrate the camp, obviously something to do with pregnancy, whether it be Claire, Sun or Kate, and then he promised her she could go home. It's anyone's guess at this point what her mission is at the camp, but I'm imagining it's not going to be good for our beachers. I think she has truly fallen for Jack, but I think she is so desparate to go home that she will betray anyone and do whatever she has to do to get home.
The previews for the next five shows, which sadly, sadly, sadly ends this season, said something about "this is the beginning of the end"...what the hell does that mean??? Oh, please, God, don't tell me they're going to take Lost away!!! When I heard that "beginning of the end" phrase, I got totally bummed..I'm like, oh, no, you CAN'T take Lost off, you just can't! I live for my Wednesday nights!!! Anyone heard any rumors on that anywhere, that the show may only have one more season or something???
Posted by: smcbroom | April 12, 2007 05:51 PM
This episode definitely did a number on my brain! Good stuff man.
I think Juliet is a brilliant character! She definitely brought the sense of mystery and awe back to the show. It had been sadly lacking since the first season. She's giving us something to ponder now. We got used to the smoke monsters/polar bears in the jungle/4-toed island statues surprises. Those things never being fully answered and hardly ever referenced, I think numbed us to the Lost experience. I know I personally kept thinking, "okay, yeah...whatever...when's Sawyer going to take his shirt off again?" mentality until these last few episodes. I think it is largely because of the mysteries surrounding Juliet and Benry. It just FEELS like it is all starting to come together but leaving a sense of intrigue by not answering everything all at one time.
Juliet annoys me, but that is because I couldn't (and still can't) put a finger on her loyalties. That is what makes her a great character. I am leaning toward thinking she is decieving Ben to get off the island and to get closer to Jack, whom I think she has developed feelings for. We'll see though...
I am pumped to get into the final episodes of this season, or what you may refer to as "The Great Charlie Deathwatch 2007." You KNOW Charlie is not going to stand for anyone (secretive Other operative, or not) messin' with his woman! He's so going to go batstuff insane if/when he finds out about what Juliet did to her. I bet Juliet is going to take him down Ninja-style! heh.
Posted by: michy | April 12, 2007 06:16 PM
I heard that the producers did want to take the show off the air when it was on top but I am pretty sure they are coming back for at least one more season.
Posted by: Nate | April 12, 2007 06:32 PM
Daniel, sorry about biting your style, but tonight's episode was so great that I just couldn't resist. (Shout out to Lauren!)
10:06- what's up with Jack? Did they brainwash him or something? She's "under your protection?" You idiot. Please God, let Sayid kick his A** SOON!
10:10- Obviously, Claire is a stay at home mom.
10:13- Wow. Juliette sure was thirsty!
10:15- So she got there via the submarine.
10:16-Benry!
10:17-Three men and a baby-CLASSIC!
10:18-Do you think what Kate is thinking is "Dammit! Jack has a new girlfriend. Oh well, Saywer's always been my rebound, anyway."
10:22- I love Hurley
10:23-" Nothing stays buried on this island".-Locke
10:26- Jacob can cure cancer, but he can't make babies?
10:27 I_heart_ Sayid!!!
10:33- Now we're getting somewhere.
10:37- So Benry has cancer? What'd he do to piss Jacob off?
10:43- Did I mention I_heart_ Sayid?
10:45- Did she just verbally bitch slap them?
10:46- So, Goodwin and Juliette? (I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.)
10:47- Mikhail is just as creepy as Benry.
10:48-Sept 22, 2004. "His name is Julian."
10:49- Daniel, if you're lucky Claire will die, and Charlie will kill himself.
10:55 Better luck next time.
10:57 I knew it!!! He should have let Sayid kill her! SHE'S PURE EVIL. Jack is such a sucker!
The teaser says it's the beginning of the end. I CAN'T WAIT!!!
Posted by: I_heart_Sayid | April 12, 2007 06:43 PM
First -- the "beginning of the end" comment: I've read a couple places that the writers/producers have started meeting with ABC about ending the show -- think about it, this is not a show that (a) you want to be cancelled w/ no real end or (b) are really able to write without a known end date -- and rumor is that next season may be it (although I think it would be odd for them to end it before the magical 100 number for syndication purposes)
Okay, otherwise, LOVED this episode! I to am curious if maybe her sister never had cancer again and if they were showing her someone else's medical records or doctored ones or whatever -- WHO THE H IS JACOB!!! I so want to learn that! As for Juliet, I go back and forth on her -- and I hate what she is doing to Jack -- he is so annoying right now ("under my protection" what crap!) Can't wait till the "week" is up though!

What I don't get is if Ben was telling Locke the truth, how was he born on the Island? I have never liked Locke, he going of with the Others really ticked me off. I think it would be neat if Juliet did betray Ben, I mean that would be so cool. I still don't get why they just forget about Rose and Bernard, but take a whole episode to kill charters we didn't even like. When other Losties died they didn't get a full episode. I really want to know where the others went, with Locke by the way. This was diffidently a good episode of Lost. Your 10:59 comment summoned up Juliet's actions for me.

I did here that Lost is coming back for at lease one more season. And remember, they said season finale not series finale. I also heard that Michael and Walt would reappear next season.I do think that Juliet's charactor is one of the best..so must mystery surrounds her..which makes her so facinating. I cant wait for Jack to find out that she is playing her...I dont know if I can make it to next Wed..Again..I watched the previews in slo-mo...You guys have to do this...You catch so much that is missed because of the speed..did everyone see that a plane crashed on the island and the body hanging from the tree?..you only see the boots..I think its the guy that Benry sez is on his way..I think the person bailed out of the falling plane and the parachute is stuck in the tree..I thought..could be rouseau..havent seen her for a while..Kate is goin g to have that sweaty island sex with Sawyer again. Does she not have any shame???
Posted by: bobbi | April 12, 2007 06:55 PM
I was saying through this whole episode that I really should like Juliet.. she has probably the most complete backstory which leaves little question as to her motivations for wanting to leave the island and being portrayed as a victim (she just wants to see her sister and Ben won't let her leave). It seems like there is every reason to trust her and her motives and I want to like her, but I have always had an inherent mistrust of her (i have the same mistrust of Libby)... and this episode confirmed that mistrust.
Now the question arises... what are her motives?
And i think this is the best/most interesting question this season has given us so far... so i agree that this was one of the best episodes of the show, and possibly the best episode of the season.
Posted by: Tracey | April 12, 2007 07:05 PM
I think Kate will definitely end up being pregnant after she and Sawyer hooked up and I bet that the Other's wanted it that way also since they caged them next to each other... and heck, what if Juliette is also pregrant!? She and Goodwin did also hook up day of crash....
They are showing us a fair amount of people doing it recently... Hmmmmmm
Posted by: Cally K | April 12, 2007 07:57 PM
That was seriously one of the best if not the best episode I have seen!!!At the end, my mouth just dropped and I didn't breathe through the whole scene!!! I always knew Juliet was evil!!! As a character, she gets the silver medal next to John Locke. But she definitely is a nutcase! I'm just wondering what "see you in a week" meant, hmmmmmmmmmm.
Posted by: Laura | April 13, 2007 01:07 AM
Has Sayid ever been wrong? Dude knows his stuff. As far as Juliet goes, I don't think she'll make it off the island alive. Same goes for Locke. He is a dead man if and when he returns. I think Sayid should just take over, tell Jack to stuff it, and get to the torture. Oh yeah, I agree with the whole 10:05 "college guy" Jack comment. He is so easily played; Shakesphere could have written a tragic play about him...his major character flaw is women. Dummy.
Posted by: Tricky Nicky | April 13, 2007 01:37 AM
Here's a thought: If every woman on the island who is pregnant dies, HOW WAS BEN BORN ON THE ISLAND???
Also, When Juliet was on the sub, they made a point of showing her without her shoes on, but when she goes up the ladder and gets out, her shoes are on. Editing flub, or did that seem intentional somehow? My LOST paranoia is turned up to 11.
Another point...the flashback where they were operating on the dying woman, they were in Dharma scrubs. Are the Friggin' others Dharma or not?! Mikael claimed to be the last one from Dharma, but wasn't that somehow disproved?!?! AAAAAH!!
Posted by: drew_ill | April 13, 2007 02:04 AM
Someone alluded to it earlier: the newspaper with Sept. 22, 2004. That's the day that the plane crashes on the island. And since they've only been there 3 months, why is this show set 2 1/2 years ago? Will they be on the island three or four years by the end of the series? That has me puzzled.
Posted by: bendo | April 13, 2007 03:26 AM
Another couple things I noticed.
1. If the images were "live" of Juliet's sister, and it is assumed that the island is somewhere in the Pacific, then one of them would have to be taking place at night. Or the island is near Miami(Bermuda Triangle?)
2. I watched the episode again on DVR, and in the scene where the plane comes down, the sequence of events is odd. All the others notice a tremor/earthquake. Then they run outside to see the plane, still intact, but only for a few moments. You don;t feel a plane starting to crash, nor does a low flying plane cause a tremor or earthquake...

Well, my "beginning of the end" paranoia made me look up some Lost news and I found this:
"E Online says ABC has picked "Lost" up for a fourth season.
The show's ratings have declined in the third season, especially after an ill-advised 13-week hiatus. But "Lost" still pulls in more than 12 million viewers per week, and it does particularly well with the advertiser-friendly 18-49 demo.
There are also rumblings that the fourth season could take a note from "24" and run uninterrupted from January-May."
So, at least one more season, THANK GOD! And personally, I liked the 13-week hiatus, breaking the season up like that. If they do go uninterrupted, then it could be next January before we see Lost...bummer :(
Also, if they do decide to take Lost off after next season, with the numbers (ratings) declining and all, I swear I will personally boycott ABC if they do not answer all the questions to the mysteries we've been wondering about! Did anyone watch Invasion last year that came on after Lost? I loved that show too, and they just unplugged it, leaving EVERYTHING hanging up in the air...if it weren't for Lost, I would have stopped watching ABC right then.
Posted by: smcbroom | April 13, 2007 01:32 PM
Although Juliet is "Evil" I think she is the first female character on Lost that I have liked (well, besides Sun). I dunno, Juliet is so badass, especially compared to Kate. ugh, don't even get me started on Kate.
Anyway, I think i'll like Juliet even if she is "evil"

bendo - the show is set in 2004 because that's when it debuted.
drew_ill - the rumblings/tremors they felt were caused by the buildup in the hatch which also caused the plane crash.
Posted by: Jason | April 13, 2007 08:03 PM
When Jack first returned to the beach, I noticed another gimpse of what appear to be new tattoos. It looked like there were stars running down the inside of his forearm. Anyone else pick up on this?
Posted by: Aaron | April 13, 2007 08:31 PM
To answer drew_ill question's: The "earthquake" was caused by the whole magnetic buildup in the hatch. Remember that the hatch was shaking on the day that the plane crashed and Desmond had to put in the numbers in the computer to stop it. The magnetic buildup thing in the hatch pulled down the airplane, flight 815, and our Losties.

Daniel I have a possible answer to your insane asylum question posed at the top of this week's blog. Below is an excerpt from an Entertainment Weekly article from November 24, 2006. King is of course Stephen King.
King: But my point is just...if you decided to end it, I don't see how the network could stop you.
EW: Could they veto a script? Could they say they're just not going to produce it?
Lindelof: Absolutely. We wrote a script last year called ''Dave.'' It plays out a version of the idea that all of this is happening in Hurley's head. The original draft was a great cause of concern; ABC felt it was advancing an idea that offered an explanation for the entire show.
Posted by: Kimbaa | April 15, 2007 09:01 PM
In response to Kimbaa's post: If they pulled that it was all in Hurley's head crap, I would be sooooooo pissed!
In response to Aaron: I noticed the tatoos too, and thought I was going crazy. Maybe the others gave him some new tats?

Here's a question everyone should ponder:
Imagine you have been stuck on an island for over 3 years, and all you have done each day is dream of being reunited with your jilted lover. Then, you start picturing events that may lead to your long-awaited reunion with the love of your life.
Question - Would you sacrifice the chance of seeing the person you have dreamed about for years, only to save a whiny, troll-looking ex-junkie with a lisp?
I mean, COME ON. Of all of the freaky things that have happened on this show (including the stupid smoke monster), I find Desmond saving Charlie at the expense of reuniting with Penny the least plausible.
