L.D.Q.A. -- 5/28

Welcome to the first post-season L.D.Q.A. With last week's finale still swimming around in our heads, we should have plenty to talk about this week. But first, a few housekeeping items:

-- The "Lost" Diary has 254 friends so far on MySpace, or about 180 more than I do in real life. Getting to see everyone has led me to make this bold proclomation: the "Lost" Diary is the number one "Lost" blog on the Internet for moms. Seriously, moms dig me. Half the people on my MySpace page have pictures of their kids as their profile pics. So it isn't just my mom that loves me.

-- The Charlie Must Die party was a mild failure. I only ended up meeting one person, but a bunch of my friends were there and I had a few drinks, so that was good. Next time I do something like that I'll come up with a way for us to actually know who we all are. That's why I work for TMZ for a living and I don't plan parties. But I did learn that if I decide to tour the country, I am set. I've got fans in England, Ohio, Rhode Island ... it's kinda cool.

-- As for season one, I am starting this week, so get ready for the pilot episode Diary to be posted this Thursday. I will continue posting entries on Thursdays and plan on watching one episode a week. I can probably get through season one and two.

Alright, on with the show ...

Q: I've taken alot of crap on the message boards, and want to go to you for the deciding vote. In order to be a true "Lost" fan, shouldn't you had to have watched every season? Whitney claims to be a huge "Lost" fan, but she never even watched Season 1!!! Now, I understand some people came to the "Lost" party late, and that's OK. But most were then intrigued and excited enough to watch Season 1. So can Whitney be a true "Lost" fan, even though she never had the urgency or interest to buy or rent Season 1 on DVD to catch up??? Your verdict? -- Rich

A: Well this was the comment of the week on TheLostDiary.com. Rich took some shit for jumping on Whitney, people argued back and forth, yada yada yada. My verdict, Rich? Honestly, it's a hung jury.

Whitney probably loves "Lost" as much as the rest of us. Can talk endlessly about what's going on. Re-watched every episode. Checks every message board. Is she a huge fan? Absolutely. Is she a "true" fan? Probably.

But to have not seen season one, my God! First off, I don't know how you can follow everything (I assume the Internet helps there). Secondly, just for the fact you would have missed "Walkabout," the episode where we learned that Locke was in a wheelchair before he got to the island, is almost criminal. For anyone who didn't watch season one, hopefully my re-watching it will motivate you to go back and see it. It's amazing stuff.

I know I am not really answering the question, I just know for me I would never start watching a show after missing a season, so I can't even fathom what it must be like.

Q: More of a comment than a question: but you said "I wish Richard was more prevalent tonight. Here's to hoping we see more of him next season."I don't think it's likely that there will be too much more; Nestor Carbonell is part of the cast of a new CBS drama this fall. -- Chris

A: Come on, that show is getting cancelled after four episodes, tops.

Q: Did you see Sun and Jin sitting behind Jack on the plane at the very beginning of the episode? -- Gina

A: It wasn't them. I can't believe how many people thought it was. When I read questions like this, I forget not everyone has a DVR. Again, I guess that where the Internet helps.

Q: You have won the sum of €1,000,000:00 (One Million Euros Only) LOTTERY on our 2007 charity bonanza. The winning ticket was selected from a Data Base of Internet Email Users, from which your Address came out as the winning coupon.

A: Sweet, now I can retire.

Q: My question really was in the "future," Jack refers to his father. Didn't we literally see that Jack's dad died in Australia? Didn't he identify the body? -- Lisa

A: My feeling about Jack's dad in the future is that he is really still dead. The writers just used the fact that Jack was a rambling drug addict as an excuse to cover up the flash-forward for as long as they could. By mentioning the dad, they were trying to trick us into thinking it was the past, when it really wasn't.

Q: Why didn't Charlie just swim out the porthole that Mikail put a grenade through? -- Sandra

A: I think he wanted to die so that Desmond's vision would come true and Claire could be rescued. If he survived, Claire doesn't get rescued. Kinda noble.

Q: What was your favorite episode this season? And if you were stuck on the island would youu want off? I'm assuming you would stay on like Locke and Henry. -- Emily

A: The best two episodes were the weird Desmond flashback one and the Juliet flashback episode. But I don't think I could live on the island; they don't have TiVo there.

Q: LOVE your TMZ posts and your new web site. I don’t even think of half the stuff that you come up with. Question for you…..(or a pleading request)….since you are a fan of The Shield, would you please please please start a weekly summary and commentary of that show too?? The Shield and Lost are the two best programs on TV right now. -- Tracy

A: I don't think "The Shield" would lend itself to the Diary format. I do think, however, that "Heroes" would ...

Q: Three more seasons? How? I have never missed an episode, but I was VERY disappointed with how the season ended. Is there any chance the flash forward was a flash to the final season and not a flash to next season? I think the writers made a horrible decision if everyone is really rescued. Gilligan never got off the island, thats what made the show worth watching. I dont need another silly drama. The writers have proven that without the island, the show goes nowhere. What now my lost leader? -- Craig

A: The thing to pick out here is whether or not the flash-forward is here to stay. I say no. I think for this episode it was just there to foreshadow what Jack making that call for help would bring. I actually do hope we see them leave the island and try and re-adjust, though I doubt that will happen. Then again, I'm the guy that wanted to see "The West Wing" continue so we could see everyone's life after the White House.

Q: Would you stop watching if they killed off Henry Gale? -- Kellianne

A: My guess is that at some point we will see Henry Gale die. That said, I will never stop watching "Lost." The producers could drive to my house and kill my dog right in front of me and I wouldn't stop watching. Ok, that's not true -- I don't own a dog.

Q: Could you tell me who it was that played the brunette when Charlie swan into the looking glass? She was the first one to be shot. -- Sissy

A: I only posted this question because it gives me a chance to mention my favorite "only lasted for one season" show: "Boomtown." It's Lana Parrilla and she played Teresa Ortiz on it. Rent season one if you've never seen it (there technically was a 2nd season, but they f'ed with the show so much it's barely recognizable and only lasted a few episodes anyway).

Thanks for helping with my Lost withdrawls Daniel! I remember when I watched the very first episode, it was just a fluke that I saw it...I came upon it about 30min into it, and I thought it was a movie at first if you can believe that! Eversince I've been addicted! I think anyone who watches and enjoys the show and is mildly obsessed (Haha)is a true fan!

Hey daniel! I'm really excited to start watching the 1st season, especaily since you will be doing a diary on each one! Yes, as much as I love "LOST", I only saw like 3 or 4 episodes of the 1st season! I didn't start watching it religious til the beginning of season 2!

Thanks for letting us know that you're going to start this week! I'll be watching the 1st episode this wednesday night!

Take care & talk to you soon!

me! (Elizabeth from Orange, CA)

PS- And thanks to Ari for wearing that hat! I would have NEVER known where you guys were on Friday if it wasn't for him! =)

ok, i'm gonna do an agree/disagree thing here. one: i agree that the flash forward was only a foresahdowy/what if future, and i think the next season will deal in part with how the loties can avoid bearded bizzaro-future.

two: i disagree about jack's dad. i think in beardy future, he's alive. here's why: one of the defining elements of the jack we know is that he's *not* a believer. at all. he doesn't think the island has magic powers and if there is some weirdness happening, well, it will all be fine and normal again once they're home. future-jack though, is clearly a *big* believer, like way. what could possibly push him to that? prolly a few things, but i think dead ol' dad walking around the hospital giving orders again might have helped.

and i'm torn on whether that was locke or henry in the casket.

anyway. yay for speculation.

kaitlyn

dude.... HOW CAN YOU throw a CHARLIE party with less than 24 hours notice... not enough time to get off work (swing shift)

THROW ANOTHER ONE... with at least a week's notice...

Ill have Charlie masks for everyone!!!

MY SEASON FINALY ASSESMENTs

Locke was in the coffin.
Henry Gale is with Kate in the future.
Rousseau and Alex will be a lame story.
Desmond is a BAD BAD dude... dont trust him brutha...

Why the heck does everyone think that Kate is with Henry in the future?
what would lead someone to think that?? because her husband wants her to come home? if i knew my spouse was out somewhere with a drug addict man who was still in love with them, and half crazy i'd probably be worried to. come on.

I joined myspace just for your lost blog which is the best on the net, even for the non-child-bearing female variety like me. What makes yours best in my mind is the re-caps, your humor, and the community of commentators. Though a few need a shot of estrogen to calm down (Rich), most are engaging and intelligent though I have to admit I think most of them saw the second round of Star Wars; whereas, I saw the first.

I am glad that you are re-capping. I am sure that it will be different than seeing an episode the first time and that you will filter the viewing through seasons 2 & 3. I am not sure that made sense but I guess my point is that there are many ways to do it and I am sure you will find the way that fits your style.

Congrats, and when you do the road show, Washington, DC please.

Carla (still looking for captioning on abc.com)

First let me apologize for any ramblings, but there were a lot of things already mentioned.

1) That casket was way too small to hold most of the characters we know except for any of the children, or perhaps Hanry (& that's a stretch)
2) If you look at the paper that Jack is holding, you can see that a "man" died, his first name beginning with "J" & last name ending with "ntham"...So It's not: James 'Sawyer' Ford, Jin Kwon, John Locke, Jack Shephard, or any other name we've heard yet ...I'm voting for Jacob XXXntham
3) Kate could easily be with Sawyer. We've heard Jack tell her he loves her in the same conversation that he said Sawyer didn't want to go to the beach with Kate because he cared for her. You know that Sawyer would A) probably not want her out late at night & B) probably not want to know that she was out with him.
4) Agree on the mentions of Christian as the ramblings of a drunk/drug addict. Easily enough to become a sarcastic wise-ass in that state.
5) I think the flash-forwards are totally a "what if" the same way that Desmond can "change" the outcome of t his visions
6) Dude...biggest thing for me fromt the last episode...what are they "Lying" about?

Sorry the party was a bust :(
So you will watch & review 2 episodes a week... cool! I'll be following along! So glad you are doing this to help us all through the withdrawl... Here's to Thursday, brutha!

I'll be rewatching with ya, Daniel :) I'm still wondering about the Annie-Kate theory, and if that pans out to be true...the whole story with Annie and whether she lived or died, and now whether or not she's Kate or not is bugging me! Can't wait til next season, hopefully they'll get to that question!

Daniel! So sorry the party was a bust. It was very short notice. Maybe if you plan a Season 4 "wrap" party with PLENTY of advance warning next year, some of the East and Midwest bloggers can arrange to drop in on their LA-area friends in May 2008 and we can join you for a proper blowout. I'm sure we'll have someone else's death to toast next spring!

And I love that you're admitting (however grudgingly) that Charlie's final act was "kinda noble." Hope you raised a glass to him in the end!

A few comments...As to the fan/no fan controversy, embodied by the Rich-Whitney back-and-forth last week. Does "judge not, lest ye be judged" ring any bells? I started watching Lost from the opening credits of the pilot strictly because I'm a homesick native, and I watch everything filmed in Hawaii. The quality of the show hooked me immediately, of course, and I stayed for the characters, not the scenery.

But I too wavered a little bit in Season 2. The sci-fi stuff isn't as much my thing, and I frequently have work commitments on Wed. nights. I'm DVR-less, and (don't ask) can't even VCR the episodes, so I drifted a bit. As the show refocused on the characters in S3, I came back. In general, I avoid shows that seem overly hyped or trendy. So I can see how some people might have stayed away initially. And I hate getting sucked into a heavily promoted show that then gets cancelled! (I'll fess up--I liked Six Degrees...and--poof--it was gone.)

The great thing about DVDs is that you can catch up, whenever you catch fan fever. So no more taking each other's fan temperature. How about, if you say "I'm a fan," then that's good enough.

And Gretchen, your point #6 about the finale's "lying" remark is an excellent one. I think this "casual" comment will prove to be a key one: What will the Losties do (or decide NOT to do, if the FF's give them the chance to change their behaviors in the present) on the Island that they will have to lie about back on the mainland? Are they wracked with guilt about the actions, or about the lying? If they are lying about crimes (we've already seen murders aplenty), what country would have legal jurisdiction to prosecute anyway? So much food for thought...

Have houseguests this week, so might watch this week's episode tonight. Should we take notes, Prof. Daniel?

Daniel,

thanks for watching again from the beginning, I am really looking forward to hearing your comments on the earlier episodes. My family watches them over and over and we still find things we never realized before. There will be plenty for all of us to discuss.

One thing that I do disagree with is whether or not Christian is still alive. I wouldn't be shocked if he is alive in the "flash forward". I think he has more to do with this whole island than we think. Still not for sure though, we will see.

Also, after rewatching the finale, the coffin is not as small as I first thought, in fact it is pretty standard size. Also, I do not think that Sawyer and Kate are together, they really haven't been a strong couple, just screwing around. I think someone is controlling her (Ben?) because of her past (blackmail?) She seemed unsettled.

Anyway, it will be a long summer/fall/winter until we find out, and I am sure we will all be really wrong about everything, we always are :-) But I do enjoy picking it all apart.

Ha ha ha! I laughed so hard when you said moms love you. I'm a mom, too, lol. I have two wee ones both under two so whenever they nap I catch up on all the posts. I think if I was at work, I wouldn't have the time to read all the posts.

Keep up the great work, brutha! Looking forward to Thursday.

Ok, I haven't quite figured all this out. When do we post questions regarding the episodes? And where? at TMZ or the diary site? I'm so confused......
Anyway, in case you read this here, maybe you have a thought or two about it. What do you think Jack meant when he kept saying to Kate, "I'm so tired of lying." What are they lying about? And to whom are they lying?
I think it was Locke in the casket, just first thought. I think Jack would feel guilty about him because Locke would be paralyzed again and his life would probably suck if they do get off the island. Haven't rewatched it yet to really analyze the newspaper article though...

Sorry if I'm asking questions at the wrong place. I'll go to TheLostDiary.com and repost there.

Have a great Memorial Day. I'll be thinking of Charlie :-(

Teresa

sorry about your party Daniel, but if you ever come to DC, ill be there.

i like the theory about the flash forward being one of Desmond's flashes. maybe there is hope for the Losties after all.

if Kate and Jack arent together after the island, its prolly cause she had Sawyer's baby.

im pretty sure the "lying" they are doing is about all that really happened to them on the island with the others and such. there has to be some blackmailing going on for them to have to lie about anything.

Hi Daniel.. Can't wait to read Thursday. I'll be watching with you but my problem is that I can never watch just one episode at a time once I put the dvd in the player. I do have one question for you: Who will you be "wishing dead" now that Charlie is gone? Can it please be Jack????? I've been wishing him dead since the third episode of Season 1.

...Hi Daniel...how would you explain the misteries of the island to an 11year old kid? I told him my personal theories, that the smoke is sort of a manifestation of your fears, and the "monster" like an alarm system for the island, but he wasn't convinced...

First I do think Charlie is dead, however, do you think it is possible that Charlie is not dead? I mean we have seen crazier things happen. Second, Did Penny just have a tv in her office waiting for information about Desmond to surface? Also, maybe Naomi was involved with Pennys father. He obviosly did not want Penny and Desmond to be together.

Hey Daniel I am so happy you are going to post season 1 of lost its been awhile and Im looking forward to reading your post.. I myself am going to rent season one and two in the near future and refresh my memory and see if I can pick up on anything..
Keep up the good work!!!

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for putting my question up in your Q&A. It was kind of a wishy-washy answer, but I understand that you don't want to alienate half of your new fan base.

As for me, I don't care what people think, and will reiterate my initial feelings. While I think Whitney loves the show and is definitely a fan, I just can't grant her "TRUE fan" status. Not because she wasn't there from the beginning, because many people picked up the show in Season 2. But all of the people I know who joined late, and I mean ALL of them, went out and somehow found a way to watch Season 1.

You know, Lost is not like Seinfeld or Everybody Loves Raymond - shows where you can start watching in later seasons and not miss a beat. Lost is different in that you really have had to watch all of the episodes in order to piece together the clues to solve the puzzle.

And you just can't do that without seeing Season 1.

So in the end Whitney, I'm glad you like the show, and think you should definitely continue watching..... but I am going to have to scold you for not ever going back and watching Season 1. It still boggles my mind.

Rich DeBerg

Yeah, Rich. We get it. You can reiterate your point a hundred times, and it won't change the minds of most of us. I am not sure what this "TRUE fan" club is that you have set up for yourself, but I think the membership must be pretty sparse, because only a few people seem interested in segregating ourselves into unnecessary categories. The rest of us are over at the fun side of the Island, where the only litmus tests are that you love Lost and play nice with one another. You are welcome to come over and join us whenever you want to.

Daniel,
You have fans in Massachusetts too. But alas, I am a "Mom". But my fifteen year old son reads your blog too!

So I've said it before - don't assume Kate has to get back to her husband...she said "he'd" wonder where she went. Methinks "he" is her son.....

Hey Daniel,
You are so right. You cannot be a true Lost fan and not have seen the season that started it all.
I got hooked on Lost during season 2 while waiting for Invasion to come one. Those last few minutes of Lost sucked me right in. I went out and bought Season 1 and DVR'd season 2 so I don't miss anything. Then season 2 DVD came out and I caught up.
Now that's a true fan.

I'm going to do likewise and watch Season 1 all over again with you. It will give me something to do until the next season rolls around. Good thing I have season 1 & 2 on DVD.

As for my question.
That had to be the real Walt because he was older/taller than when he left. So if that really Walt where is Michael?

Oh, and Daniel, please don't tease so much about a Heroes diary....but if you're going to do it, I will be a faithful follower! That will help get me through the wait until January...that's for sure...

SpicerK, well said!!!! Finally, someone with some common sense!

Even though you didn't start at the beginning, you knew in order to comprehend everything you had to go back and watch Season 1, and you did!

You, my friend, are a TRUE Lost fan.

Rich

Daniel,
I truly appreciate your comment--you understand that I can be a Lost fan even though I didn't watch season 1--YET---and I cannot fathom it either...but I will do it and I'm really excited that you will be posting Season 1 commentary right here! Rich, get over it, you might as well because from now on when I see your name, I will skip right over your comment. It doesn't make sense to drag out something as stupid as this. I don't know if you are trying to make up for something you are lacking in your personal life or what, but if that's what you need to do to feel good, go for it. I give you permission to say whatever it is you want to say about me--a midwest girl you never met in your life.

By the way, Daniel, the Q&A is working out awesomely. Thanks for picking good questions that I wonder about myself. See you here next week for Season 1 Recap.

Okay, I have a little theory here. I haven't read through all the comments so if this has already been put out there, sorry for the repeat.

I'm thinking that Kate (in the flash forward) is with Jack's dad, not Sawyer. I'm guessing that this is one of many horrible things that have happened to Jack since coming back from the island. It could certainly drive anyone, even Jack, to drinking and drug abuse. We already know he suspected his father as the "other man" with his previous wife. Maybe this time it's actually him. And maybe that's why Jack's dad is still drinking heavily after coming back to life on the island. And maybe that's why Kate has a real nice car now.

As for the coffin?
Hurley - no, coffin not big enough.
Bernard - no, Jack would consider him a friend
Michael - no, Walt would have come to the funeral (assuming he's still alive)
Desmond - hmmm . . . don't see why he would have a ceremony in poor area of Los Angeles especially given the money spent by Penny to find him
Jin - no, Sun (and many others) would be there and Jack considers him a friend and again, wouldn't be in Los Angeles
Sayid - no, Jack would consider him a friend (barring some kind of upcoming "betrayal")
Locke - possible. certainly not friend or family to Jack at this point. Don't think his death would upset Jack as much as it did. No family. No friends. No money. And Kate probably wouldn't care about him too much. But I doubt she would completely dismiss him the way she did.
Sawyer - again, possible. probably not considered by Jack as a friend, but I'm not so sure of that. Certainly no family (at least no family that knows about him). Probably no money. And if Kate's not with him anymore then it would probably be due to a serious fall out. But I still think she would go to the ceremony given their history/connection.
Ben/Henry - odds on favorite. No friend to Jack. No family now that Alex knows the truth. He would be reviled by all the Others for the lies and equally hated by the Losties. Certainly would have absolutely no money and likely live in a poor area. And I'll bet his death would greatly upset Jack after learning that everything Ben/Henry told him was true. Jack, indeed, had nothing to come back to and the island, or at least its "uniqueness", was destroyed.

I'm with you JenJen, would love to see a Heroes Diary. Are you seriously considering it Daniel? Please reply!!

Daniel: Not only do you love Lost, but you have invoked the name of another of my very favorite shows of all time. The short-lived but incredible "Boomtown"! If I weren't married and way older than you, I just might want to have your baby.

I don't know why it never found a bigger audience, but I agree that they completely f'ed the show in season 2 and then killed it off. Thank you for identifying that the brunette was from there, because I was trying to place her myself.

Now I'm going to be sad the rest of the day, mourning for "Boomtown" :(

I'm thinking the person in the casket is someone unknown to us..and possibly the connector to all the Losties - just a thought since I think the writers meant to overshadow the finale with an unknown casket inhabitant AND the fact the Christian Shepherd is alive in the FF.
(We know Jack's dad is dead cause, within this past season we learned that, Juliet had his autopsy report and knows how he died...an answer the Jack still doesn't know.)

My creditials for comment - LOST fan since S1, all episodes watched.

Hi Daniel,
Do you think that was a "real" Walt talking to Locke, or some weird "Island-Walt" that Jakob sent, kind of like the smoke monster was Mr. Eko's brother?

Jodi from nyc

Seriously, you all are forgetting that Kate mentioned to Sawyer that they were checking if SHE was pregnant. He doesn't want her to go with him because he LOVES her and once to protect her.
I am also pretty sure that it was probably Henry Gale in the casket...that is why no one went to visit, he has now friends!!

Aloha Daniel! You have a friend and avid reader in Hawaii too! And if I still lived in L.A., I'd have been at the Cat and Fiddle for ya!

If Henry is in the casket, then who did Jack call to say that he just read...and then start sobbing, tears and all?? Why would Jack get that worked up over Henry being dead? And same goes for Locke, I mean sure, Jack may feel bad, but he wouldn't cry over the guy.

Hey Daniel, given the success of your diary. Have you thought of changing the format from comments to a message board type style?

Wow, can't even read this blog either without Rich stinking up the place with his elitism.

I have a new theory: They've been on the island for three years, not three months. This would explain why Walt is three years older and why Sun's hair is so long. It also explains how so much has happened in such a short time.

I'm thinking that next season we'll be flashing back to stuff we missed on the island that brings us up to today. And we'll also be moving forward with Jack and Kate trying to get back. Twisty!

Laughing about the Whitney/Rich debate. I couldn't start watching Lost until I had seen all the previous episodes. So last summer, I got seasons one and two on iTunes and spent the entire summer watching on my computer.

There's no way I could have started Season 3 without catching up! But I admire Whitney for being able to keep up and hope she's inspired to watch Season 1 soon.

I'll be watching all three seasons again over hiatus.

Ok - Lost fans and Daniel - maybe i missed this comment somewhere along the way BUT, has anyone else noticed that in this show almost all of the characters have "father" issues (bad dad, mean dad, absent dad.....)? Jack, Locke, Ben, Kate (step-dad), Jin, Sun, Hurley, heck even Walt (Michael was an absent dad)! this can't just be a coincidence!!! Daniel, what do you think this means? There has got to be some signifigance - historical or something - I just don't know what it could be! Any Ideas?

In case anyone missed that, here's what Jo said....

"There's no way I could have started Season 3 without catching up!"

Wow, all of these people who support me are coming out of the woodwork, because they all realize Whitney is absolutely insane for not having yet watched Season 1!!!

I LOVE it when I'm proved right.

Proudly,
Rich

I am also came late to the lost party. I missed season one, and started watching the first part of season two. I rented all the DVD's and caught up over a weekend. Needless to say I've been hooked. I even had my kids create a my space account just so I could keep up on the blog (yes - I too am a mom). I understand Rich's underlying sentiment; some of us are just more obsessed than others. Never-the-less we are all fans to one degree or another. You go Girl - Whitney!!

Jo - If three years has gone by how come Sun does not have a little three year old running around?

I think the time travel is going to be a big part of this. Desmond has already time traveled, hasn't he?

FYI - I'm in a major disagreement with a co-worker over the finale of Heroe's. I said the next morning how it fizzled and she thought it was great. Speaking of that I need to rent the dvd's when season one comes out because I missed the first part of this season. I've got one foot in and am totally confused by that one. It could be I'm not totally qualified to comment on that one. :)

Brutha, great call on Boomtown. That show was so great and well written. It seemed NBC brought it back as a favor to Spielburg, but it just wasn't good the second season. They got completely away from the format of one story from many point of views. Great diary. Single moms make the best dates!!!

if you do take a tour of the country, you've got fans in Missouri too, gotta love the heartland!

LOL nan, loved your comment!!!

mr burns--I'm just guessing, because I haven't rewatched the finale, but I kept thinking that the number Jack kept trying to dial, with that robotic, standard voice mail greeting, was the same number all three times he tried it, so I always assumed he had been trying to call Kate that whole time. I'm guessing that he was crying and upset because maybe Henry is the only person who knows how to get back to the island but now he's dead? Just guessing though :)

Daniel,
You are adorable! I hope that was a death to Charlie cake! Thanks for doing what you do! If you ever swing through the Midwest, let me know! I would love to meet up (though I'd have to bring my husband!).

Whitney-keep on posting, your real Lost family loves you and all your questions! Love from one Midwest girl to another!

Keep being "right" in your head Rich, because to most of us, you are just a idiot that has a computer. Keep leaving your comments, we all know you post them so you can see your name again and again.

Well, I finally had the time to rewatch the finale last night and I am sure of a couple things:
1) Jack said "niether" not "either". (According to the closed captioning) It was tricky to hear though.

2) We are meant to believe that Henry Gale/Ben gave the Other ("Ryan", I think) the order to shoot the sand instead of Jin, Sayid and Bernard because Ryan and Mr. Friendly were arguing that they should not have followed orders and shot them themselves instead of "putting 3 bullets in the sand". So, it sounded to me that Ben gave them orders to pretend to shoot them, but Mr. Friendly really wanted to shoot them after they killed 7 of the Others.

3) When Charlie saw the flashing button for the incoming transmission and pressed it and got Penny, she said, "How did you get this frequency?" That confused me. Why would she ask that question? Wasn't it an incoming transmission? Maybe she had a constantly running distress call out on many frequencies hoping at some point someone would answer. Could be, I guess.

Great picture, by the way. Thanks for sharing.

I think Tristan is an arrogant, ignorant (not to mention HYPOCRITICAL) piece of horse sh!t for always making fun of Rich's posts. He is a complete tool.

Whhoooo hooo, is it Thursday yet?????

Thanks to Jim for always posting happy thoughts. You can call me whatever you like, but as I had previously posted before, I am a WOMAN!!! When you intend on making fun of me, please be correct when doing it. You my friend are the tool and I won't be posting to either you or Rich. We should all just give up this stupidity and post for the right reasons, not to bash someone or make fun of them.

ssmcbroom - I wasn't thinking about the way I worded my statement, because I do think he was calling Kate and I wrote "who did he call" which was incorrect -

I should've written..why would he call Kate and say that "I just read...", hang up and then start crying IF it were to be Henry or Locke in that died? And then why would he try to commit suicide over either of those guys?? I just don't think that Jack would have gotten that upset over the death of Henry or Locke, so therefore I don't think either on of them is in the casket

In true LOST form, we are left to speculate who's in the casket, but when the show airs next year, I think it will be a new character in that casket(possibly one we've met/seen, just don't know anything about) and that person could be the connector to them all....and I am (obviously) guessing here.

mr_burns - Yes. The person in the casket may be an entirely new character. However, if the dead person is an existing character, my first thought was indeed that it was Henry. The reason Henry's death could make Jack so upset is entirely plausible if you consider that Jack may realize Henry was the only person able to help him get back to the island. Remember, Jack screamed to Kate at the end of the finale that they had to go back to the island. Maybe Jack realizes that Henry was right about not contacting Naomi's ship and/or that his life is now such a wreck because of having left the island the way (or at the time) that he did. Therefore Jack is desperate to get back to the island. Just a thought... I'm going to HATE waiting until next year to find out!

Michele - you know what is even worse? We are probably not even going to find out next season. I have a feeling they are going to make us wait on this one. Ugh.

And, yes, I agree that we have not met the person yet. Don't be surprise if we meet a character named Jeremy Bentham in the future.

If you guys read Lauren the LOST Nazi's comments in the TMZ log, (she watches the show with Daniel) you will see that the producers (and this is not a spoiler people so don't worry) intended MICHAEL to be in the coffin and actually show him in it. But when the actor that played him found out that was what they wanted he didn't like it and said no. So they closed the coffin. So there you go, no Henry, no Locke. Michael, which I am sure will come out next season, one way or another. He is neither family or friend really. It is possible that the newspaper article everyone is fond of quoting is purposefully misleading, those producers are tricky! I love them! :)

By the way, Widsl. I like your comments. You have coherent, well written thoughts. Good Job.

C - thanks. :-)

widsl - yeah, I don't think we're going to know the casket inhabitant next year either.

I just hope they elaborate on that smoke monster thing...three seasons and I feel like we haven't learned anything definitive about it yet

Michele - thanks for the thoughts, and I too can't handle waiting for next season...so many questions still and no answers in sight.

mr burns - the waiting for answers is the hardest, but as long as they make it worth the wait, then it's all good. :-) The Smokey mystery is definitely up near the top of my need-to-know-soon list. On the very top would be the whole Jacob thing, but that is such a new mystery, I think I'll be waiting a while for that one too. Sigh.

Does anyone know where Lauren got the info about the producers intending it to be Michael? Seems like if they were going to show the casket open and it was the actor that was uncomfortable with it, then why not let us know in some other way instead of leaving it (yet another) mystery. And, why would Jack want to off himself over Michael?

Continuing on a thought I posted above, could it be Michael who would know how to get back to the island? After all, if he did actually sail home from the island as we were led to believe, then he should know the path back. If Jack does truly want to go back to the island and only Michael knows how to get there, then Michael's death would be a huge disappointment to Jack. Also, Kate would definitely have reason to express surprise that Jack would ever consider she would want to attend Michael's funeral as he back-stabbed them to save himself.

I agree with you, widsl. I think we will be waiting a while on this one!

Michele - yes, that could be.

Craig said that "Gilligan never got off the island" but obviously he never watched the made for T.V. movie where he did in fact get rescued. Just saying..

Widsl, I am not sure where she read it, but if you read her blog, once the actor said no, they changed the whole ending to add Kate at the end. At this point, I think they merged the two ideas together to be mysterious.
Why would Jack be so despondent and consider suicide if Michael died? Is it because Michael somehow lost Walt to the island forces (he was there at the end of the episode, right?) and was himself trying to get back to the island to get his son and failed, therefore, commiting suicide as the article suggests? Maybe Jack, who had been flying on Oceanic to try and crash again as he said, became depressed when he read the article because he saw Michael's fruitless attempts to return to the island, had left him frustrated with no other hope but suicide and decided to give up as well? Maybe this is one for Daniel. Daniel, what do you think?

the only way that jack's dad is alive after they get back from the island is if there really is some sort of time difference and they got back before they went...i hope that doesn't only make sense to me.

I have no way to rewatch the finale. I'm wondering if anyone has gone back to look at the graffiti (sp?) on the bridge before Jack jumped, or to look at the car that drove by the funeral home to see if the drivers looked familiar. There are probably other things to reexamine that I haven't thought of. I'm asking this because someone discovered that the funeral home name was a word scramble for flashforward, so there may be other things in the scenes that need to be examined carefully.

I thought Jack's dad must somehow be alive in the future since he kept mentioning it. But, since someone said the writers probably meant that as a curveball so we would keep thinking it was a flashback, I now think that is probably the case. Just a drug induced rambling from Jack about his dead dad.
Could someone please explain why people think Kate may be Annie. Did I miss a clue in an episode?
