House of the Rising Sun

Welcome back to another Throwback Edition of the "Lost" Diary.

A couple of quick notes:

-- If you haven't already, be sure to befriend the "Lost" Diary on MySpace. My goal of beating Brody Jenner is failing miserably. Support the cause.

-- I want to share with you my favorite site on the Internet (besides TMZ) -- www.tvtattle.com. Every day, around 10:30AM PT or so, this site updates with TONS of links to articles about television. It runs the gambit of information and it is an absolute MUST read every single day for me. They take the occasional day off, and sometimes they add links throughout the day. But I never miss a day of checking this site. If you love TV, you'll love this site.

-- My Internet is down as a write this, which means two things: I might not be able to post this when I am done and I can't check the Lostpedia if I need to. This is another unreal site. Occasionally as I am writing, I can't remember the name of a flashback character or which hatch is which or whatever -- this site has it all. It's absolutely fantastic. I only use it as a source of reference; it's just impossible to remember every little that happens on this show. Bookmark this one too.

With that, let's roll:

00:00 -- The previously on "Lost" doesn't have the same rhythm as the more recent ones do. It's very blah and does nothing to get me excite for the show; the ones now always get me overly hyped for "Lost."
00:02 -- Have I mentioned how much I love the patented eye-opening shot of "Lost"? It always gets me excited for "Lost."

00:03 -- Hey, now that we're back in Sun/Jin flashback mode, I get to test my theory from seasons 2 and 3 -- all you need to do to write for a Korean character is use the words "honor" and "shame" a lot. Let's see if it holds up for season 1.

00:04 -- Nope, didn't happen there, but we came awfully close.

00:05 -- Ah yes, the Michael/Jin fight. Kinda funny how nobody broke it up. I am struggling to remember why Jin attacked him -- I thought it was something about a watch, but Jin was wearing one when he beat him up. Well, I guess that's why I am re-watching.

00:06 -- Fine tackle by Sayid, but why does Sawyer just happen to have the handcuffs in his pocket?

00:07 -- Charlie sneaks off to do some heroin, but ends up standing on a beehive. He can't even do that right.

00:10 -- When Sun/Jin flashbacks are good, they're really good. They aren't the type with huge reveals and overly shocking moments, they are just always solid.

00:12 -- Charlie, of course, screws up the bee hive thing and bees start chasing everyone. Why Jack and Kate need to take off their shirts to fight off the bees is beyond me. But whatever gets Kate's shirt off is good television to me.

00:13 -- "Where'd that come from?" -- Jack. Some questions are best not asked, but I know a lot of people are still wondering who Adam & Eve are. Don't think we've gotten an answer to that one yet, have we? Damn you Internet, I need my Lostpedia!

00:15 -- Poor Jin, you can already see Sun's father sinking his claws into him.

00:16 -- Damn, Kate put her shirt back on. Sigh...

00:17 -- Jack's idea to bring everyone to the cage is so well thought-out and makes so much sense you just KNEW Kate would find fault with it.

00:19 -- Watching Walt and Michael struggle to bond reminds me of a thought I had last week. Would they have bonded like they eventually did if they hadn't crashed? Is it possible the crash was a good thing for them?

00:21 -- "I do whatever your father tells me." -- Jin. Understatement.

00:22 -- Man, Kate is a whore ... and I love it.

00:24 -- As much as I hate Charlie, the early scenes between him and Locke -- about finding his guitar -- are great. Mostly because of Locke, of course, but I can give credit where credit is due.

00:26 -- Sayid isn't too fond of Jack's cave plan. The division begins...

00:27 -- "What up with you and Kate? You guys going to move into a cave together?" -- Hurley. Man has a point -- I can't believe Jack hasn't hit that yet.

00:29 -- I have to say it again: I love Sun/Jin flashbacks. It's so interesting to see how close they were before Jin started working for her dad, how distant they were before the crash, and then how close they became again. I credit a lot of it to Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Jin. When he wants to look like a prick, he does. When he wants to look like Mr. Sensitive, he does. And he does it all without speaking English. Possibly the most underrated actor on the show.

00:30 -- "I need to talk to you." -- Sun. And English, no less!

00:31 -- "You speak English?" -- Michael. Such a dumb question, he had to ask it twice.

00:32 -- "Protecting that watch is a question of honor." -- Sun. Well it's about time! Drink.

00:33 -- "I know a lot more about pain than you think." -- Locke. Now THAT is an understatement.

00:34 -- Kate finally told Jack she's not going to the caves. I don't like it when mommy and daddy fight.

00:35 -- Michael's speech to Jin is a top 5 moment so far in season 1.

00:36 -- 11:15, time to go Sun.

00:37 -- Man, it's a good thing Jin had that flower or else he'd be the only Korean-speaking castaway on the island.

00:39 -- "Short walk, they lied." -- Hurley. This episode had just the right about of Hurley for me. For the most part, if Jin/Sun episodes are consistently grade A episodes, Hurley ones would rate lower. Love the guy, but in small doses.

00:41 -- Great song, great little montage to end the episode.

For an episode where not much happened, I still really liked it. The pace was slow, but deliberate, and we learned a lot of little things about every character. Season 3 had a lot of down episodes, but I don't remember any from season 1. I guess once things really got going, we expected a home run every time out.

Here's my question this week: Which character do you think has delivered the most consistent flashback episodes? You already know my answer...

Woo hoo I get to comment first, I feel so naughty. Anyways, loved this episode, funny when Kate said her shirt was full of Bees and Charlie said he thought they were more like C's, what a moron, LOL.

Sorry about your internet Daniel, hopefully it will start to work soon...

*00:27 -- "What up with you and Kate? You guys going to move into a cave together?" -- Hurley. Man has a point -- I can't believe Jack hasn't hit that yet.*

Sigh, I guess I'm just old and I forget today's generation has forgotten the art of flirtation, romance, and having some fun just getting to know someone.

Sigh, yep I'm old.

Adam and Eve = Future-Past Jack and Kate. The post Flash-Foward Jack and Kate return when to the Island. Just a thought.

I would be so lost (ha-ha) without LOSTPEDIA. Any little thing one can think of is posted there.

As far as consistent flashbacks, I would have to say Sun/Jin, because they intertwine and flow so well that you could almost take their flashbacks and make a new show just from them.

It figures Kate would find practicality unreasonable!
Re the flashbacks:

a) Consistently entertaining?
or
b) Consistently useful?

Juliet, Locke and Desmond for both

Kate's flashbacks have been consistently useless/irrelevant
(Opinions when in a bad mood come kinda snarky, don't they?)

Hi Everyone! I've always said I like Sun and Jin's flashbacks the best mainly because I like their love story so much with Desmond and Penelope's a very close second. I am a sucker for the love stories. Like Rose and Bernard. That actually brought tears to my eyes (sniff, sniff).

ahhh Carly, you mentioned Rose and Bernard. I just LOVE those two!! I think that Rose knows as much about that island as Locke does and they just haven't let us in on it yet. Ok they haven't let her in on it yet either. She knew Bernard wasn't dead, she knows she's healed, and other various things that I can't remember lol. I just think there's more to her character and I definitely think we'll be seeing more of her in S4.
Now it may just be me, but if I were near water and was covered with bees, I would jump in the water rather than struggle to get my shirt off. I didn't watch it last night so I've already forgotten, but weren't they around water? You guys/girls could still get your Kate-in-a-wet-shirt fix and I'd feel a lot better about the bees. If they weren't around the water...well, then never mind.
Daniel I totally agree with your Michael/Walt theory. The crash was definitely good for them and I don't think they would have bonded at all otherwise. It's odd how crashing on an island can be a good thing.
Most consistent flashbacks go to none other than Locke. Surprising, I know. I just love every second he is on screen. He doesn't even have to do anything! Some of his best scenes have been sitting somewhere and staring. What is going through that mind!!!

GOOD EVENING TO ALL!

Great episode! There were a few moments that made me crack up: 1) Sawyer calling Sayid "Captain Falafel", 2) Charlie's comment on Kate's bee's and C's, and 3) Hurley's comment about the "short walk".

Daniel your comments this week were quite witty.

To answer your question: its a tie... not only has every Sun/Jin flasback been quite strong but Desmond's have always been very interesting.

oh yeah~
who the hell is Brody Jenner?

Hi Carly! Hey, Janice where's Hardy...err Laurel...I mean Janelle?!! (he he he)

Holy Crap! Lostpedia is amazing! I could get so lost in there (pun intented). When I did a quick search on "adam and eve" what I found most interesting was the reference that Carlton Cuse gave to the clues about the identity of adam and eve found in the episode "not in portland". The playing of the message backwards in room 23 saying "only fools are enslaved by space and time". Are these people enslaved on the island? are they fools because they can't find a way out?

trying to find answers only produce more questions, damn it!

Great diary this week Daniel. We don't care if you were late, as long as you get it posted we are happy. Oh, and thanks for the new addiction to TWO new websites! sheesh!

"What up with you and Kate? You guys going to move into a cave together?"

haha. This episode was...eh...the best is when we hear about Hurley's story and his millions and the NUMBERS!! Still freaks me out when we see that the numbers are on the side of the hatch. hehe

Hey Nannie,

Just run a search for Brody Jenner in wiki or imdb.

Good morning everybody (Ana, Janice, Carly, Susan)! I gotta say, I love Sayid flashbacks and we need more of those on a consistent basis (to prevent him from being the "swiss army knife" guy). But, like a lot of people, I find the Sun/Jin flashbacks the meatiest, even if they don't move any of the island plot forward.

I have spent HOURS looking around the Lostpedia site, and the wikipedia Lost page. There are lots of tidbits in there, and I swear, sometime I think I am too invested in Lost, but the people who post that stuff must believe they live on the island ...

my question ... who is doing what on the 4th, and will Daniel post on the 5th ... or wait a week! I'm gonna be in Florida and don't want to miss the thursday discussion!

JANELLE: That's a great question. I would suggest that we watch on Thursday and discuss on Friday. Only, of course, if Daniel doesn't go on vacation. Are you?

I don't think I could wait a week.

ANA: LOL! Laurel and Hardy!!! LOL!!! I wish I were that funny.

I am being totally selfish, but because I am going to be on a beach in Florida from the 4-8th, I say TAKE A WEEK OFF! But I totally understand that's just me and maybe we should take a vote ... (is there voting on the diary?)

Did I mention I am going to be on a beach for five days! Plan to indulge in some Sawyer-induced fantasys.

Hi guys! I finally just looked at the Lostpedia site too last night and I was up untill 1am! All this time you guys have talked about it but I never realized how much is in there. Once you start reading one thing you have to read another and another.....I went to bed dreaming about Lost.
The Adam and Eve thing George, was so interesting to me too! I really think in the end the space and time thing is the key even though we haven't put our finger on it yet. I like the little discreet clues they leave us.
Well I have to work through the 4th, but I do get to work from home, yay!! So I will have my laptop next to me at the pool with my drink with a little umbrella in it and lost of suntan oil and will still check in next week to see what Daniel decides to do. :)

I also live for Lostpedia! It gives such great reminders of things we might have missed. I agree that Sun and Jin flashbacks are fascinating, expecially considering we get to see the point of view of both of them. Locke flashbacks are also awesome and we sure have found out of lot of information from those. Daniel, your statement about "honor" makes me laugh because that is so true of the Sun and Jin saga. Love Jin -- agree he is underrated as an actor just because he's not speaking English. Oh, and he's hot! : )

I meant "especially". I can't type! But I kinda like the word "expecially." I might start using it!

I also agree about Jin. It seems nowadays that actors try too hard to act, to show their expressions on their face, that it comes off looking overly dramatic...but, with Jin, it just looks natural. He could go the entire series and not speak a word, his face would say all you need to know and that is so rare with actors these days!

And I also love Lostpedia, and have spent HOURS looking through all their files. Many applauses to the people who keep that webpage up and accurate!!!!

Where IS everybody today? I am finding myself working entirely too much today.

I want to add, I liked most of the Kate flashbacks (a LOT better than most of the Jack ones), but mainly because she was married to Nathan Fillion (Mal Renolds), who I love even more than I do Sawyer!

Yvette,
thank you so much! Now I know who Brody Jenner is.

I'm starting to feel like a freak of nature here, because...I don't even want to say this. Deep breath, ok here goes~Sun and Jin just don't do a thing for me. Nada

Am I watching Lost in Space instead of the LOST that you guys are watching??

Hey Janelle, Ana and all the other ladies. Janelle! On the beach! Sounds good!

Ok to get to Daniel's question, of course Locke's flashbacks have been the most consistent. I think we have learned more about him than anyone else. It seems to me that Locke has lived several lifetimes, always searching for what he has now...the island!

Hubby's on vacation next week too. Don't know what we will do, probably just stay home or go to our son's.

You all have a wonderful and safe 4th of July!

Nannie - I'm with you, I've never been a big fan of Sun and Jin either. I actually even fell asleep last night trying to watch the episode. Of course, I have been working a whole lot more this week than I'm used too, so I'm using that as an excuse. I did like them more this past season than I did the first two tho.

The first of the Seven Deadly Sins is pride ... and it was with pride that I watched this episode of "Lost" on the appointed day and time. As soon as the "Soprano"-esque musical credits stopped rolling, I rushed to my computer to dispense critical wisdom, when-- Damn Internet!

By now, I've forgotten almost everything, so Daniel's notes are particularly handy. Nice show. I really enjoy seeing the other passengers during flashback scenes. This means the creators planned ahead (which might have helped this season of "24"). I did figure out Jin's line of work in advance. (Not totally off-topic: Some great Korean flicks have hit these shorts of late. "Lady Vengeance" is a fine example.)

Anyway, liked the bees and C's ... enjoyed Sun's English scene ... wondering if Hurley's name is a pun.

Also, I saw "Knocked Up" this week. There's a joke early in the film about Matthew Fox. The flush of pride returned, because I knew his name.

Oh oh Dad don't tell me your internet was acting funky too. Well glad to see your still with us. Was Knocked Up good, been wanting to catch that one. Isn't it funny at the things we take pride in? :-)

Night, everyone.

Oops, I was actually referring to Daniel's connection, not mine -- which is okay. (I spent the weekend networking everything in my house ... not for the squeamish.)

"Knocked Up" is okay, but too crude for even my taste. That's saying a lot, because I've been in kids media for the past decade, where fart and belch jokes are always funny.

Not only did it stretch any sense of credulity to imagine Katherine Heigl to have anything to do with Seth Rogen after she sobered up, but the story arc was too focused upon him and his feelings. She became almost a non-entity to man-child Seth ... and her character was extremely smart, talented, accomplished, and gorgeous. I actually thought it was all pretty sexist; surprising, because I usually like this stuff.

Enjoy your week off, everyone!
