L.D.Q.A. -- 6/11
Slim pickings on the questions this week, but I liked the ones I found.
Q: My brother contends that "Lost" would be a much better show if it was on a cable network like HBO. By his way of thinking, the main advantage of this would be the absence of commercials, thus making each episode 10-15 minutes longer. Consequently, the producers could focus more time on the mythology of the show, and waste less time on "filler" like the golf course, the red-shirts, and Charlie. Also, the show could incorporate material that is somewhat more PG-13 than is currently appropriate on ABC. -- Juliet
A: I agree that "Lost" would be better on HBO (what wouldn't be?) but I have a different reason. HBO shows are only 12 episodes per season -- straight to the point, no messing around. They don't have to "fill" 22 episodes. That's why I am so excited about "Lost" being cut down to only 16 episodes a season. Trim the fat, so to speak.
Q: As one of the 'net's most sensible "Lost" prognosticators, what's your take on the "time travel" or "alternate timeline" theories? -- John
A: Not a fan of either theory, not that I have any to offer up of my own. In a strange way, theories are like spoilers to me -- I just want to enjoy the show each week. I try not to focus too much on things that haven't happened yet.
And thanks for the compliment, by the way.
Q: If you had to chose between never seeing another episode of "Lost" again (not any of the old ones or new ones to come) or never hearing any Prince song ever again, which would you chose and why? -- Hannah
A: There isn't a single thing on Earth I wouldn't give up before never listening to Prince again. Jennifer Love Hewitt doesn't even stand a chance.
Q: I managed to get my mom to start watching "Lost" because what better time to start than while we have such a big break until Season 4. My QUESTION: Should I refrain from telling my mom all the "juicy" details about the characters or the island that we know now--after watching Season 3? I know, I don't want to spoil anything for her, but I feel like she may not pick up on certain things by just watching the DVDs. I get so much information from the web, mainly your posts, but she doesn't really "do" the Internet thing. -- Whitney
A: I wouldn't tell her anything that gives anything away. But you can point little things out to her along the way that might help her understand the episode you just watched. The best thing about "Lost" is the surprises (aka Tivo Moments) so don't say anything that would ruin those down the line.
Q: Did you ever watch "Carnivale"? I loved that show more than a cat loves cat nip, but I felt robbed by the abrupt ending. Just wanted to know if you felt the same pain. -- Tristan
A: I don't jump ship on a show too often, but I stopped watching "Carnivale" about halfway through season one. I wasn't loving it and I didn't think it had a real shot to even get renewed. But from everything I heard it got really good. Oh well, can't watch everything.
Q: Just exactly what do you plan to do to keep us entertained in between season 4 & 5? -- Carla
A: Wow, we're only a few weeks into this "off-season" and we're already thinking about the next one? I'm open to suggestions.
Comments
Carnivale did get freakingly good and we all got cheated that there was no closure on the show. I hope Lost doesn't end that way. Thanks Daniel for the blog again.

Thanks Susan for letting me know I wasn't alone!
Posted by: Tristan | June 11, 2007 07:18 AM
Tristan, do you think they may come out with a Carnivale movie? They could resolve all the unanswered questions and I'm sure fans would appreciate it. :)
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 11, 2007 07:40 AM
Susan,
I wish that they would, because I would pay some serious money to see Nick Stahl again. But I highly doubt it. :(

Isn't this a LOST web site????
Posted by: Nicodemus2 | June 11, 2007 09:36 AM
Yes this is a Lost website, but the purpose of opening up the Monday Q & A after the season ended was to answer questions about different things. We range anywhere from Prince to Jennifer Love Hewitt.

I think I just got snubbed. I e-mailed Daniel some good questions (the tarp one too, no less!) and no response....Being snubbed is not cool. I will take a Kate-n-esque approach to dealing with this and give myself 5 seconds to feel sad: 1...2...3...4...5...Still sad.
"Slim pickings" Daniel? Not cool. Just Not cool
Posted by: Ana : ( | June 11, 2007 10:07 AM
Hugs Ana, I thought your tarp question was Very Cool! Daniel? :)
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 11, 2007 10:21 AM
Thanks Susan, I feel the L.O.V.E! Its OK, just caved into my own little pity party, it will be over in minute. I guess no one is as clever as they think!!!
Posted by: Ana : ( | June 11, 2007 10:37 AM
Ana, I missed your tarp question. What was it? I am sure it was very insightful.
Posted by: Jennifer | June 11, 2007 10:49 AM
Ana it was an insightful question, I have been pondering over the tarps now that you have mentioned it. I was sitting with my husband last night watching "walkabout" and I keep pestering him about the tarps. He threatened to turn the show off! Maybe Daniel just missed it?
Posted by: Tristan | June 11, 2007 11:00 AM
i feel your pain, Ana. i too emailed a question and it went unanswered. then i read the "slim pickings..." line and felt a pang of neglect. sadface.
Posted by: sarah | June 11, 2007 11:02 AM
Thanks guys!! I feel vindicated....nanernanernaner Daniel! Ok that's outa my system
Jennifer: My question to Daniel was about the abundance of tarps on the island. I wanted to know if a plane would even carry tarps.
I had other q's too...he had mentioned to make things fun, so I had "fun" Like, what would be the theme song to your life? Isn't that "fun"?
Posted by: Ana : ( | June 11, 2007 11:13 AM
Sarah: *sigh* What can you do? "Slim Pickings" is what did it....I'm glad you caught that too, I thought I was just being a baby....which is still a possibility.
Posted by: Ana : ( | June 11, 2007 11:19 AM
Hmmmm, what is the theme song of my life? Today is my birthday and that's a good question for the occasion. Hmmmmmmm.
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 11, 2007 11:23 AM
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUSAN!!! Theme song of my life? That is a pretty sweet question....so many choices...

Hapy B-day Susan! May all the Sawyers of the world find you and shower you with sweet jungle love on this most special of days...

Happy Birthday Susan!!! Anything fun planned for a lovely Monday evening? ;-)
Posted by: widsl | June 11, 2007 11:59 AM
Hey Ana,
Sorry you're feeling sad. We still love you. :)
Maybe all the tarps came from Henry’s magic box? All the Losties imagined tarps and they just appeared the same way Locke’s dad did.
Posted by: Hannah | June 11, 2007 12:06 PM
Sweet jungle love - ha ha! Ana you are the best! Hi - sorry I missed last week I had to go out of town at the last minute again and my laptop wouldn't let me send anything! I kept reading everyone's post and just laughing my butt off about the tarps and all (when I was supposed to be in a meeting so I think I gave it away I wasn't paying attention) but I couldn't comment! :( Oh well, anyway I saw that you asked me if I wanted to know what the other comic book part was and I really do! I hope you read this and can let me know...
Oh and Happy Birthday Susan!!!
I am going to try and send an question to Daniel, it's my first one so I hope he answers!
Posted by: Carly | June 11, 2007 12:06 PM
Well, my theme song would be "Coconut" by Harry Nilsson
Put de lime in de coconut and call me in the morning. Nuf said.

Posted by: Ana : ( | June 11, 2007 12:13 PM
Awwww I feel like I should send in a question or two.
Posted by: Jessie | June 11, 2007 12:22 PM
I loved Carnivale to the same extent I love LOST, subtle hints leading you very slowly to understand the complicated main storyline. But as you mentioned they canceled that show, which really suxed. But as for this blog, it's the best, I get more insight from all the bloggers input and Daniel's breakdown, which I appreciate. Ok, thanks for reading my lil 2 cents, my first time blogging, I'm normally just a reader. But between Carnivale and LOST, these are my 2 fav shows that keep me on my seat wanting more.
Posted by: Bianca | June 11, 2007 12:39 PM
So here I am, reading Daniel's Q&A as I normally do - and I get to the question about someone getting their Mom involved in Lost, and wondering if they should tell Mom the "juicy" details on the characters. And then I see who wrote the question - and it's WHITNEY!!!! I mean, are you serious? This coming from a gal who hasn't even watched Season 1 herself.
How can she be giving "juicy" details, when she doesn't even know 1/3 of what has happened on the show?
So Whitney, sit down and watch Season 1 with Mom before feeling like such an authority on the show. PLEASE.
Posted by: Rich DeBerg | June 11, 2007 12:45 PM
Thanks you all for the Happy Birthdays!!. Sweet jungle love, hmmmmm. ha! Sawyer, sweet! hahaha! But alas nothing planned for tonight. Hubby works night shift! :( For the life of me I can't think of a theme song for my life. Maybe a song for each decade of my life! Whew... there are so many decades!!!!! ha!

I posted a question a while back, maybe it got lost in the shuffle, but bottom line, Daniel has said he only selects the questions he finds interesting. I presented a fun fact about lost, and asked what he thought about it, but no response. It's ok. I'll ask you guys instead:
I made an interesting connection. When Ben first showed up he used the name Henry Gale. Henry Gale is the name of Dorothy's Uncle in the Wizard of Oz (Dorothy Gale is her full name) in the original story, Henry Gale played the wizard in Dorothy's dream, and he failed to get Dorothy out of Oz using the hot air balloon. Anyone remember how the original Henry Gale from LOST arrived on the island? in a hot air balloon!
Just a curious connection, and I wondered if the writers did that on purpose. Ben is kind of the Wizard of the Island. Prolly doesn't mean anything, just one of the many "easter eggs" they hid for us to find.
Thoughts?

CARLY: Here you go. It's conversation between Green Lantern and Flash with a villian of some kind. Dont know what's his name. He has a big brain. Any gueses?
FLASH: Cuales son ahora tus planes?
-What are your plans now?
En que te afecta decirnoslo? De todos modos, somos tus titeres.
-In what way does it affect you telling us? We’re still your puppets .
BIG-BRAINED-DUDE (black bubbles):
Mi plan es morir.
-My plans are to die.
Por culpa de Gunther y de ustedes estoy plagado de enfermedades. Pero recompartire mi dolor.
-Because of you and Gunther, I am now plagued with illnesses. But I plan to share my pain.
GREEN LANTERN: Entendemos como te sientes. Lo que hicimos hace medio siglo estuvo mal y lo que te hicieron dense entonces esta mas alla de cualquier clase de perdon. Pero si alguen ha de pagar por eso......
-We understand how you feel. What we did half a century ago was bad and
what they did to you since then is far beyond any kind of apology. But
if someone should pay for that ....
Posted by: Ana : ( | June 11, 2007 12:52 PM
Sorry George, but your little nugget was not interesting at all. It's no surprise at all that Daniel didn't include it in his questions.
Survey says..... BORING!!!
Posted by: Rich DeBerg | June 11, 2007 12:54 PM
George: The writers did it on purpose all right. Just to screw with all our minds. Remember the epi with Jacob is titled "The Man Behind the Iron Curtain" Hello! I bet it was a way to get the viewers to keep rethinking what side Ben is on: good or bad. Trustworthy or Liar. Savior or Evil Incarnate. My 2 cents.
PS. Rich DeBerg: You really need to relax man. Put the lime in the f-ing coconut and relax ====~~
Posted by: Ana : ( | June 11, 2007 12:59 PM
George, don't let certain people get you down. I think the reason Daniel did not post your question is because it was already discussed in detail back when the episode originally aired. It is an interesting connection, and Ana, I liked your take on it. ======~~~ :-)
Posted by: widsl | June 11, 2007 01:09 PM
I would really appreciate it if people like Susan, Ana, Tristan and their "girl power" group kept their non-Lost discussions private. People come here to read about Lost. Lost characters, Lost theories, Lost episodes, etc.. Yet these gals constantly bicker and banter about other shows and song lyrics and clog up the entire discussion with irrelevant nonsense.
So girls, can you keep the conversations about Lost? Pretty please? Cherry on top?
Thanks in advance,
Rich
Posted by: Rich DeBerg | June 11, 2007 01:10 PM
All hail Rich De Berg! The all knowing, thought provoking, discussion rendering Lost guru....Oh wait, you do NONE of that. Nevermind, it's just plain ol Rich being an azz. Carry on.
You know, I'm searching for those Lost Nuggets you provide....cant seem to find them. Hummmm.
Posted by: Ana | June 11, 2007 01:14 PM
Rich, my mother always said unless you have something nice to say don't say anything at all. Didn't your mom tell you the same? I've found that is good advice. When I see you making hateful remarks to innocent questions and observations it makes me wonder why you even come to this blog. Do you treat people in real life this way? Daniel has asked us all to play nice. Why can't you?
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 11, 2007 01:16 PM
Rich, on a parting note I just want to say that I'd rather be consistently irrelevant to the topic at hand than consistently asinine and have EVERYONE avoid me like the plague. Its obvious that every time you spew whatever rude diarrhea you can come up with to show you self-proclaimed Lost superiority everyone leaves the discussion. Yeah, keep up the good work, Rich.
This is something you should be used to: having the whole website all to yourself.
How’s that for girl power? Ass
Posted by: Ana | June 11, 2007 01:29 PM
first of all, i think it's hilarious that everyone knows about Dan's obsession with Prince. doesn't even compare to his love for LOST. whole other level people.
secondly, i would die and go to heaven if LOST was on HBO. for obvious reasons. nudity and Sawyer sex scenes anyone? holler!
thirdly, i have a question: remember how in season 1 & 2, they were obsessed with Walt? cuz he was telekinetic and all that jazz? only dharma people would care and study him for that reason. the hostiles killed the dharma peeps, and i'm guessing they did not carry out the Dharma initiative, nor their research or studies. so why the huge desire to catch Walt? doesn't add up. and what the hell is the list for! that one bugs me the most!
also, in response to Ana's tarp thing (which is a good point), why also do people insist on bringing porn and pregnancy tests on a plane? random, don't ya think? And furthermore, who or what has been dropping off all the dharma food? all of the dharma people were killed!
Posted by: Lauren, the LOST Nazi | June 11, 2007 02:17 PM
Ana rules!!! Girl Power rules!!! The Lost Diary Rules!!!! :-) Chill pills rule!
Posted by: Yvette P. | June 11, 2007 02:25 PM
Lauren---
I was thinking the same thing about the whole DHARMA food drop thing. And my guess is that maybe whoever is running the DHARMA study has no idea that nobody is left. That would be the only way to explain it.
P.S.
Maybe the Pregnancy tests were duty free at the airport? Or maybe it was a DHARMA pregnancy test. They make everything else so why not? :)
Posted by: Hannah | June 11, 2007 02:39 PM
hi hannah! so then my new question for the food drop is this. how is it being dropped? it's not a plane, because the Losties would have seen or heard one, and planes don't make it to the island. who or what is bringing that food? and how?
duty free!! hahahhaa! i love the duty free!
Posted by: Lauren, the LOST Nazi | June 11, 2007 02:59 PM
AC-tually.... [pretentious sniff] ALL the Dharma people were NOT killed. Henry Gale specifically told Locke that he was "one of" those too smart to end of in that mass grave/pit. Also, if you listen to the podcasts [omg, am such a dork], Damon & Carlton have referenced that they're going to touch on what happend to Henry Gale's little GF, Annie.
Just sayin.
Also, haven't you noticed how many smut mags are in airports? I mean, people, if I were on a long flight by myself... and I were a dude (or a lesbian)... just sayin'
Posted by: ali | June 11, 2007 03:09 PM
hi lauren. The Dharma and Others issue has bugged me for a long time. It does not add up that Dharma/Hanso wouldn't know they weren't alive/operating anymore. So my guess is that the Others and Dharma/Hanso merged into one and that there is now a third party. The "real bad guys" that Ben alluded to in the season finale. That would clear up the food drop debacle. As far as the "how", well remember the first drop was done with a parachute of some kind. Maybe a plane or chopper drops it off before it can be sucked down by the islands force and is guided by that beacon thing it had attached (via the looking glass perhaps) Maybe that why the Looking Glass Babes had to keep it secret, Ben hasn't told the other Others that they survive under the premise of being Dharma....Or maybe I’m full sh*#t. Who knows....
Posted by: Ana | June 11, 2007 03:09 PM
okay, my last comment edited to add: Again, if you *listen to the podcasts* [shaddup] or read Lostpedia when you're supposed to be, I don't know, "working," they have a section on there about the Lost Experience: In a training/orientation video that was NOT on the show but WAS online, Marvin Handle mentions that the food palette drops will continue "in perpetuity." Which is basically just an excuse for, "we'd get sued by all kinds of unions and groups if we asked all our actors to voluntarily look like everyone who makes it to the end of Survivor, or leave the show."
Posted by: ali | June 11, 2007 03:12 PM
Ana, not bad! always love your theories. and plus they're the most creative! Ali, i hear ya on the porn :)The podcasts, not so much.
you girls are two shrewd LOST fans! love your insights!

Who ever wrote that (hummm could it be Rich De Ass) is sooo beyond clever. I am beside myself with awe Rich. Didn't you pull this same stunt with Whitney? Posting under someone else's name....well at lest we can say you're being an adult about it. Poor little Richie, I think its time for a nap.
Posted by: Ana | June 11, 2007 04:00 PM
Thank you Ana for posting those words to Walt's comic book! If the comic book reflects what's going on on the island, could the bad guy be Jacob? I mean he did look like he had some kind of "illness" you know being an invisible, old spirit looking thing and all. Interesting.....
May I say that posting using someone else's name is just weird. It's summer people, lighten up! Who cares what we talk about, it all comes down to the fact that we are all Lost fans so we come together here to talk. If you don't like something, just scroll down like I do :)
Ana, I still think you're hilarious~
Posted by: Carly | June 11, 2007 04:34 PM
Thanks Carly. I think the bad guy is Ben. In the comic book, he says that things were done 'to him' and that he (and what will happen)is the result of that. Well, what better explanation of BEN that that! I still feel that Jacob and Ben are not on the same page as far as how things are being done for the island. Thus the need for Locke and Jacob's apparent plea of "Help"
As for the comment @ 3:53 It was not me. Carly, sorry for the ugliness. I never should have responded to 'it' when 'it' first posted. :)
Posted by: Ana | June 11, 2007 04:47 PM
Did any of you follow the Lost Experience last summer? It was so much fun. I wish they were doing something like that this summer, it would sure make the time go by faster.
Posted by: Tracy | June 11, 2007 04:52 PM
It's ok Ana, hopefully that won't keep you from posting. Just say "this is the real Ana not the fake one"! Daniel said have fun with it and I think we are. See you Thursday!
Posted by: Carly | June 11, 2007 05:06 PM
Ana and Lauren, I really enjoy reading all your postings, and I'm really intrigued by your comment at 4:47; the correlation between the comic and Jacob and Henry Gale is really very interesting. Jacob definately appeared weakened and maybe even trapped. They are definately in a power struggle of some kind and trying to use Walt and Locke to help their cause, Jacob obviously winning their support. Before Henry shot Locke he was definately trying to get him on his side.
I didn't have a chance to read all the past postings so someone may have already mentioned this but wasn't it foreshadowing to hearing Locke explain the backgammon game to Walt as a game of power between the good and dark side.
At the season finale I was thinking that Henry was misunderstood and was really trying to protect everyone from whoever is on that boat, the presumption being the people on the boat have bad intentions. After reflecting on this I'm just not so sure now, which is probably the whole intention of the writers (just to confuse us). :)
p.s. I am sorry that it got so ugly again. I really thought we were past all that. I too hope it will not keep you from posting.
Posting under someone elses name should really outlaw you from this blog. Maybe Dad should put someone in a time out until they can behave.
Posted by: Teresa Lynn | June 11, 2007 08:00 PM
George,
Henry Gale wasn't the wizard in Dorthy's "Dream". Henry was her uncle, and the wizard was the carnival man she met while running away. Just thought I'd add that. Hi all!!
Posted by: Robin | June 12, 2007 03:54 AM
Hello All,
Just wanted you to know that I post all of my own thoughts and comments, and don't ever post under someone else's name. I think you'll all agree I'm not shy/afraid to post an opinion (good or bad), so I have no need to post under another name. All my thoughts/opinions will always be signed by me.
And by the way, when did this "turn ugly" again? If this is truly a message board for Lost fans, then I certainly can state my opinion that we should keep the commentary to Lost discussions. Also, if I feel like someone else's theory is dumb, I am going to call them out on it!
So be prepared, people. I'm here and not going anywhere anytime soon.
Hugs,
Rich DeBerg

Robin:
You beat me to the Henry Gale reference redirect!
My other minor (and gentle) correction (and it is really so minor I probably shouldn't even mention it) is that Jacob's first appearance was "The Man Behind the Curtain" -- no "iron" involved :) hehe I guess the Others *could* be considered Communists!
Please don't flame me! :)
On a different note: I'd read somewhere an interview with the producers in which they basically said that all the answers to the island are scientific. My question is, how loose are they going to be with the word "science?" Does paranormal science count? Or science fiction? I've often thought that science fiction was just that -- things that will never happen in our lifetimes....
Just a thought -- now I'll run and hide!

Ok, since the end of the workday yesterday and the begining of it today, I missed a lot!! Susan, Ana, Carly and our girl power is fantastic and the fact that we talk about things other than Lost is ok. Did someone miss when Daniel said to send questions about things other than Lost? Maybe someone should go back and play catch-up. We are just a happy go lucky group that wants to talk about Lost, Prince, music and Sawyer naked. I mean...ok I did mean that.
Keep on with the "girl power" and all our fun discussions that also include Lost!
Posted by: Tristan | June 12, 2007 05:48 AM
Ana, MY husband and I were having a similar conversation. Where did the axe and the Saw come from? All the tarps was a discussion point and we watched the "Boone" episode last night (Lost is like chips you can't watch just one) and is they were in the front of the plane how did they get the section that had the cargo door? There are a lot of things like that.
So Ana, Thanks for thinking those things with me. And Susan, Happy Birthday.

Hi All!
If I recall, didn't Sun use a DHARMA pregnancy test? I thought I remembered that for some reason. I guess that would be in the supply drop - especially if the DHARMA people were having the same fertility issues as the Others. And why are the drops still coming? Who's is making them? And, if Desmond and the other hatch-guy (man, I have a bad memory for names) were grabbing the drops, didn't the Others wonder what was happening to them? Or, since the Others had access to civilization, maybe they didn't even know the drops were being made. But, I find it hard to believe that they would not know about them. I am forgetting...did the Others know about Desmond and hatch-guy in the Swan? (I need some Ginko Biloba.) Too much partaking of the (virtual) ====~~~

Girls,
He DOES post under other people's names...but I know you are all smart enough to realize this. Just keep saying what you want and pay no attention. I always know that whatever I post will evoke some "Rich comments," but I really don't care. We all love LOST here. Ana, I totally agree on the tarp thing. I noticed this the other day...there are tarps everywhere--why would they need them on an airplane? weird.
Everyone have a great summer!
Posted by: Whitney | June 12, 2007 08:46 AM
Wow, it seems as though Rich woke up on the wrong side of the bed yesterday...glad I missed that one...relax man ======~~~.
And, Rich, since you're planning on staying here and being around for awhile, I think it would be in your best interest to lighten up, cause the off topic discussions are supposed to be fun..I'm with Susan, when you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all..it's just better for everyone, keep this a friendly place for all.
HAPPY BELATED B-DAY SUSAN - Gemini's are awesome!!!
Christine...you heard all the answers would be scientific? Not that I don't think that's true to a point, but what about mythology (the temple, the pillar, the foot, philsopher name references) fitting in there too?? I just think that science couldn't possibly answer ALL the questions to LOST and that faith, religion, mythology would fill in the missing links - but I'm just sayin', I dunno
Also, DAD posted an interesting thing about the show The Prisoner, now this was before my time, I'd never even heard of it before, so I looked it up and reviewed...first, that Rover (ball thing) security system he was menitoned was extremely similiar to ol' smokie...then some of the plots of the show seem similar...I'm definitely thinking that the creators used that show as a reference to writing LOST. I would be interested in seeing some of those old shows, anyone know if they're available on DVD / video?
Well GIRLS chat later!!
Posted by: Kerin (formerly mr burns) | June 12, 2007 09:01 AM
widsl - I'm thinking that absolutly Henry knew of Kelvin and Desmond in the hatch...mostly b/c I think that Kelvin is an Other, and died a "Mikhail" type of death, I think we'll see him again..especially cause Kelvin and Sayid crossed paths in Iraq - there's something more to that guy..so with that said, I don't think Henry or the Others would care much about the drops.
Posted by: Kerin (formerly mr burns) | June 12, 2007 09:20 AM
Kerin - oh yeah! Now I am remembering that Kelvin used to leave the Hatch periodically. Probably to check in with Henry/Ben. Hmmm, maybe we will see him again. Do you remember if Desmond just left him lying on the ground after he killed him, or did he bury him?

OK ya'll, I have something to share since ever since Sun asked Sawyer for the pregnancy test there has been talk as to who would carry a pregnancy test on a plane. The answer is me. I fly for work almost every week, all over the world. DH and I have wanted to start a family for some time so up until a few months ago I always have with me either an ovulation kit or a pregnancy kit, sometimes both if I didn't clean out my suitcase good from the week before. So I know if I need to fly home early or if I finally have good news. Of all the things they have pulled out of the wreckage that we laughed about being far fetched that was never one of them. We laughed about them finding my bags.
I dont' think the other know about the drops. Those where from Dharma and since all the Dharma higher ups are gone no one canceled the subscription. The others get stuff from the outside world. That's just my theory and probably isn't right.
Also, wasn't Kelvin, who was the guy that taught Sayid his "communication skills" in Iraq also Kates Dad? We thought it was all the same guy.
Posted by: jennifer | June 12, 2007 09:41 AM
No, I think Kate's Dad was Kelvin's Superior. Again, bad memory. Stress, "I think".
Posted by: widsl | June 12, 2007 09:44 AM
widsl -
Kelvin left the hatch cause he was secretly fixing the Elizabeth, Desmond's sailboat, that niether the Others or Desmond knew was there (curious that the Others didn't know about the sailboat until Sayid, Jin and Sun were dropping in on them) And the thing he hit his head and died, just like that? Come on...I think he's still around...Desmond checks his head and runs back to the Hatch, all hell is breaking loose and the plane crashe..so Kelvin died the same day the Losties arrived...food for thought
And yes Kelvin did teach Sayid his torture (communication) skills and he also spoke Arabic to Sayid, telling him they would come in handy ..but I'm almost postive that Kelvin is not Kate's dad, another army guy is, and seen with Kelvin.

Kerin Burns -- *wink* on an aside I still commend you for your reveal last week! Too cool! :) Anyway -- I have to say I can't remember where I read that (might have been spoilerfix.com -- yes, I'm a recovering spoiler addict!) and it could have been that they didn't use the word "all" in regard to which answers would be scientific...
I don't profess to know anything about what the producers and writers have in mind, and I try not to buy into the theories that fly around..although some of them can be very tempting!!
Sometimes I wonder how many think that the writers go through the various boards and blogs in search of ideas that they like? I'm sure they have a general roadmap of where they're going, especially now since they've announced the length and ending of the series..
Ok, I am officially rambling! :)

Quick note - the pregnancy test that Sun took was manufactured by Widmore Labs - a subsidiary of the Widmore Corporation. So a nice spooky connection there to Penny and her Father...
Happy Lost Eve to everyone...

Christine - I have no clue about any of this either...I was just offering up another thought :) and thanks for the props.
Tracy - you mentioned the LOST experience, did you participate in it last summer? If so, did it offer anything of use to the show?? I read about it on Lostpedia, but I'm not too sure how reliable that site actually is, and it seemed as though they touched on the numbers question...was anything really explained? It's funny cause I'm a fan of the show, but I wasn't interested in the LOST experience.
Posted by: Kerin (formerly mr burns) | June 12, 2007 10:18 AM
Thanks Kerin for the Birthday props. I have to agree with you, the questions to LOST are not going to be totally answered by science. There are too many tie-ins to religion, mythology, books of literature and so forth and that is what makes it fun!
On a side note, the actor who played Kelvin, didn't he play Brother Justin on Carnivale? HA!
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 12, 2007 10:33 AM
widsl & Kerin -
Yeah, Kelvin is not Kate's Dad. He just worked with Kelvin in Iraq. :)
The question of whether Kelvin is still alive though is one of the big ones we still need answered. On one hand, no one has found his body and we all know what the island does with injuries. On the other hand, dead bodies seem to mysteriously disappear and Kelvin still hasn't popped up since his "death."
The timeline of Kelvin entering the Swan station is also a bit weird. You would imagine that the Purge occurred well before Danielle came to the island. This would place it before 1988.
However Kelvin said he was with DHARMA for 10 years - since 1994 or so. You would imagine Kelvin arrived before the purge and survived it by being hidden away, but I can't imagine DHARMA being still active on the island and Danielle not seeing anyone for six whole years.
Now it's possible that even after the purge, Hanso kept DHARMA active to keep someone pressing the button at all times (after all, they were still getting supply drops). Radinzsky and Kelvin could have been recruited after the purge, quietly dropped in the station and abandoned.
Next year, we're going to get Danielle's story (supposedly). Hopefully between her version of events and hopeful flashbacks from Ben, Alex, Richard, and Karl we can start to piece everything together.
Posted by: Jay | June 12, 2007 10:43 AM
Hi Kerin - I did participate in the Lost Experience. I had always been a fan of the show, but after last summer I have become completely obsessed with it. It mainly dealt with Hanso/Dharma and other corporations tied to the two - one being Widmore. It's been several months since the end of it, so I hope I'm remembering correctly, but I think the numbers were explained as being the answer to an equation that told when the end of the civilization would be. We also learned that the Black Rock ship was a slave ship owned by Magnus Hanso. I haven't been to Lostpedia in a long time, but I think that was one of the sites that documented the experience as it happened. It's worth reading about, it ties a lot of stuff together, that I don't think they will ever have time to touch on in the show.
Posted by: Tracy | June 12, 2007 10:48 AM
Jay - I hope they do a backstory on Danielle next season, she is one shady lady and we need some answers on her ass!
I definitely don't think they (Radinsky and Kelvin) could've been there for the purge cause the Others knew the station was there...Henry and dear ol' dad were delivering supplies (beer) to the Pearl, which watches the Swan..unless they were smart like Henry and survived it (one of the few) ...I think I convinced myself (with no proof, mind you) that Kelvin is a part of the Others and he's working with them, like Mikhail
I know nothing though...just guessin' like the rest of 'em. And not that I watch the Sopranos, but I know many were disappointed in the ending...I hope in 2010 we're not super pissed and find out they're on the long-lost island of Atlantis, that is really purgatory trapped in a time machine..ya know?
Oh and Tracy - thanks, I think I'll look into the LOST experience some more, and the info about the Black Rock is news to me
Posted by: Kerin (formerly mr burns) | June 12, 2007 11:15 AM
Been in a meeting, sorry. Wow, I missed a lot though. I do remember seeing somewhere in the Lost Experience about an equation that calculated the end of civilization. I think they said that one of the purposes of the DHARMA Initiative was to be able to find a way to "fix" society so that the equation can be altered. (i.e. Life Extension Project etc.) I also remember them saying that they would remain on the island until the equation changed. This is all on the secret video taken by Rachel. (Alvar Hanso's daughter?)
Posted by: widsl | June 12, 2007 11:30 AM
Speaking of the island's healing abilities ... last season (2) during one of the recap eps, I remember seeing a shot where a hand was reaching out of the sand, like it had been buried but was crawling out. It was either at the v. beginning of season 2 or tail end of 1. Does ANYONE else remember seeing that, either in a recap ep or during a show. I remember thinking at the time that it could have been Ethan Rom, but now thinking it could be just about anyone who was buried at one time or another.
Also, Rich, I know I am coming in on this a little late, but if you want to whine that not every post is Lost-centric, then you need to yell at Daniel, because several of his Q&A comments have not centered solely on Lost, either. His blog, he can run it however he sees fit. Don't like it, start your own blog.
I also wonder where the heck all of the tarps came from ... and it seems more show up all the time. Was the Dharma food drop wrapped in tarps, and were there tarps in any of the hatches that have been visited? I would grab them and take them if I found them anywhere.

Hi Kerin. I saw your post about The Prisoner. It is available on DVD and I know this because as I mentioned this before when Allen aka Dad first posted. My mom is a fan of all things British, esp. the BBC and she loved all the 60's spy shows they did like Secret Agent and The Prisoner. She made my brothers and sisters and I watch videos of them she bought back in the 80s. We were young and really didn't understand the deeper levels of what was going on and of course I didn't think it was "cool" when I was like 10, but she made us watch it anyway. More recently she bought them on DVD and so I rewatched them with her and as an adult I understood it a lot more.
This last season of Lost reminded me a lot of The Prisoner. Patrick McGoohan, the star, is trapped in a place he doesn't know anything about and he tries to find out who is running the show there. Very smiliar idea and like Lost, I read that The Prisoner has always had a big cult following even now. Anyway, she bought them thru PBS but I think you can find them anywhere now, like Amazon or even Amazon UK. Maybe you can just watch them online now. Check them out.

BIG NEWS!!!
Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Wednesday will announce his intent to move to Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in 2008, multiple sources with intimate knowledge of the negotiations told ESPN.com Tuesday on condition of anonymity.
What does everyone think about this?

Kerin -
I had to go look this up because it was bothering me.
I originally thought Kelvin was with the Others too, but I knew in one of the Lost Podcasts the writers said that Kelvin and Rad were both part of DHARMA and that Ben actually didn't know where the Swan was until they entered it and found Desmond.
Quote:
Q: Did the Others know about the Swan?"
A: "No, they didn't. Kelvin had been left alone down there after the Purge, and the electromagnetism is something the Dharma Initiative didn't want other people to know about."
Furthermore, this makes it seem that the Purge was after Kelvin had been recruited, i.e. after 1991. I said 1994 in my previous post - Kelvin actually joined sometime around 1991, i.e. ten years before Desmond crashed on the island. Three years after Danielle crashed is still too long, but maybe she didn't explore the island much at first.
It's possible though that although Ben knew of the Pearl and the Swan, he didn't know where on the island they were buried or what they were for. Also, if he thought the Pearl was simply a psychological experiment, Ben might have simply left the station alone thinking it was useless.
Regardless, at the very least, it does seem that Kelvin was not an Other.

Jim when I read the last comment you left, I almost fell out of my chair laughing! Thank you for the update and thank you for telling Rich I said it was ok! Though I am not a huge Nascar fan, I love to hear other news even if it isn't Lost related. Have a great day you crazy Losties!

Apparently Jim isn't a huge Nascar fan either...as he never answered my question. Sorry, I have been holding out hope that Earnhardt Jr was going to the team my husband works for. I'll stick with Lost from now on....
Posted by: Tracy | June 12, 2007 12:49 PM
Sorry Tracy....
One scenario has Earnhardt driving Kyle Busch's No. 5 Chevy and another has Casey Mears moving to the No. 5 and Earnhardt to the 25.
Who does your husband work for?

Hi everyone - I have some inside information on the tarp debate! My father-in-law has been an airline mechanic for two international airlines (TWA and American) with over 30 years of experience. He said that the smaller planes will have 6-8 reinforced waterproof cloth baggage area dividers, which could be used as tarps, but the larger planes (like the Boeing 777 used for Flight 815) do not have these dividers - and he has never seen tarps used on a wide-bodied plane. Maybe the psychic who saw Claire, Rose and Mr. Eko decided to send a care package on the plane, including tarps, porn, and a pregnancy test!

I love to discuss the show, especially since it's going to be several long cold months until we get any new info and the finale certainly served up a ton of stuff for debate. :)

Jay - just checked out your blog. That is the first enlarged shot I've seen of the Season 3 DVD set. Love the "Jacob Loves You". Sux that we have to wait so long for that and Season 4 tho.
Posted by: Tracy | June 12, 2007 01:25 PM
Jay - I was just reading your site (great, btw) and you mentioned that Jin was the only character with a good dad and an evil mom. However, I think Kate's mom was pretty darned evil. She chose her abusive husband over her daughter and even turned her daughter in to the police. Don't you agree?
PS - I LMAO at those fish biscuit people. I have to make those!
Posted by: widsl | June 12, 2007 01:26 PM
widsl - I don't think Kate's mom was evil, just a confused, abused woman. In her opinion, she loved Wayne and viewed Kate's action as a murderous betrayal rather than as compassionate help.
My girlfriend's a psychologist who likes the show more for the personalities and relationships than the mythology. She doesn't always find the character's motivations realistic (like Jack for the second half this season) but she did find Kate's mom's reaction totally believable (even calling it a "classic" reaction).
It's also interesting that we were originally led to believe that Sgt. Austen was her biological father and he seemed like a pretty descent guy who loved her (and taught her how to track). But we later learned that Wayne was her actual biological dad.
Kate has serious issues with her mom, but I don't think her mom is evil.
I soooooo want to make the biscuits sometime. Maybe next year for the Season 4 opener. :)

Jay - thanks for the info on Kelvin...it's much appreciated, I have never listened to any of the podcasts before so I wouldn't have known that.
Posted by: Kerin (formerly mr burns) | June 13, 2007 05:49 AM
Good morning all!
Jay - I can definitely see that Kate's mom's reaction was classic, if not typical even. However, speaking as a woman and looking at it from Kate's perspective, I still think that it's a pretty evil thing to do, regardless of the reasons (abuse, etc.) that led up to it. I am not a psychologist but I am a daughter and if my Mother ever did that to me, I would be destroyed inside. Kate's mom might not be inherently evil, at least not in the way that Jin's mom seems to be, but the difference is that Kate knows what her mom did to her and Jin does not.
Also, I don't remember finding out that Wayne was her biological father. (But it is well established that I have a horrible memory.) ;-) When did we learn that?
Great chatting with you. - widsl

Kerin (formerly Mr. Burns),
Can you please stop providing a bogus URL whenever you post? You see, the URL line is there if you want other readers to be able to access your website. For example, click the link under Jay's post at 3:15, Tracy's at 1:25 or Lauren the Lost Nazi's post all the way up at 3:25. Notice how when you click those, you are redirected to their websites???
But when you click the links on any of your posts, you get an error message. So please - do it correctly, or don't do it at all.
Frustratedly,
Rich DeBerg

widsl -
We learned Wayne was Kate's real dad in "What Kate Did" (up until then we thought it was Sgt. Austen).
Your point about Jin not knowing what his mom did to him is a good one. One can also argue that Jin really suffered from a bad father-in-law rather most of all anyway.
But while Kate's issues are with her mom, Kate is entirely responsible for the situation she's in. Kate had a lot of other options open to her rather than murdering Wayne and attempting to commit insurance fraud. How about reporting him to the police, at the very least - even though her mom wouldn't have pressed any charges, he made advances at Kate as well.
Perhaps if Kate had taken other steps, her relationship with her mom wouldn't have deteriorated so.

Rich DeBerg -
Can you please stop coming off as a complete assh*le? You see, when you ask for things, you can be a little nicer. For example, Kerin, did you know that your URL doesn't work properly and I get an error message?
So please, when you post be a little nicer or don't do it at all.
Love that I was able to frustrate you,
Kerin (formerly mr burns)
Actually my rule of thumb is to try and treat people as I want to be treated...karma is a funny thing, so to be true to myself I will apologize for my mistake of a URL to everyone here, it was there by accident and I didn't realize it did that, just wish Rich was a little nicer 'bout things - that's all.

Geez, Mr. DeBerg, lighten up! Seems that you are very critical of a lot of people that post on this blog. Must be nice to be that perfect!
Please try and be a little more diplomatic so as not to ruin the pleasant environment that has been established in this little community....

Jay - True, Kate certainly could have taken a higher road, that's for sure. If I put myself back in Kate's shoes for a moment, I would have tried other (more legal) ways to resue my Mom from an abusive husband. Then again, that wouldn't make for very good TV! ;-)
And, yes, if we are to hop on the LOST "daddy issue" band-wagon, we could certainly argue that Jin had father-in-law issues and Kate also had step/real daddy issues as well.

Hi Daniel,
I'm having a baby in January. We don't know yet if it's a girl or a boy. If you were having a baby, what names would you give it based on your favorite TV characters? My husband's not a LOST fan (and yet I'm still married to him!), so he's not into Rose or Desmond.
Thanks,

This article is from the NY Times, regarding the Sopranos less-than-stellar finale...I can only pray that the Lost writers (who LIKED the ending) don't follow suit in 2010! I am afraid...very afraid!
the New York Times, invited the writers of other television programs to weigh in on David Chase's bold conclusion to The Sopranos. Among the takes:
Damon Lindelof, Lost: "The ending was letter-perfect.... Afterward I went to bed and lay next to my wife, awake, thinking about it for the next two hours. I just thought it was great."
Doug Ellin, Entourage: "I'm just speechless. I'm sure there is going to be a lot of heated discussion, but that's David Chase's genius."
Chuck Lorre, Two and a Half Men, quips, "This is what you get when you let a writer do whatever he wants. [But] people just finished watching the show and immediately talked about it for a half-hour. What more could you want as a writer?"
Tim Kring, Heroes: While noting that the storytelling throughout the finale felt "a bit disjointed," Kring says, "As soon as it ended, I went there.... I put myself years into the future thinking about what you do when you have viewers with these sorts of expectations. I think you just have to be true to what you were originally trying to say."
Carlton Cuse, Lost: "A sense of fear ran through my veins, thinking that we are going to be in this position [in] 48 short episodes. But it settled well with me. In that blank screen, there was a... purity in the choice Chase made."
Both Losties liked it? Be very afraid for May 2010. Be. Very. Afraid.

Still on the war path I see....
Jay: I like your posts. Been reading them since yesterday. On the topic of Ben and the Swan station, I have the following to add. If Ben thought the Swan station was irrelevant, why let its inhabitants remain alive? Unless of course he knew "the button" had to be pushed. But that excuse goes out the window because the Others were surprised at the effect the explosion had on their communications (knocking them out)
I find myself stuck between two possibilities:
1.) If the Others found the Swan "useless" (unlike the other hatches they took over)why leave its inhabitants to remain. Not to mention the fact that they were allowed to roam the island (the blast door map)
2.) If the Swan WAS of importance to the Others, why wouldn't they prevent Locke from penetrating it, why wouldn't they know the effects of its destruction on their communications (or airplanes for that matter!), or why wouldn't it be occupied by an Other?
Do you think that the "illness" is the purge? That Radinsky and Russou (sp?) happened upon the gassed bodies and concluded that they died due to an illness?
And on another note, Ben DID know about the Pearl all along. Remember the Expose epi, when Paulo was hiding in the bathroom and overheard Ben showing Juliet the live feed of the Swan station. That's when they first hatched the plan to use Jack to operate on Ben. Ben famous line: "I'll just find out his weakness and exploit it" (something along those lines)
Hello Mr Burns!!

Jodi,
As far as LOST names, I have always loved both the names Claire and Kate for girls - I think they are simple and classic. But I guess it just depends how you feel about those characters!
Jack was always my "boy name" (due to a name in the family being Jack) but I never got to use it :( There are tons of Jacks, Jacksons, etc...running around though, it is getting pretty common.
Good luck - I know that is a hard decision!

Hi Ana, nice to see you here today...
Just to add a little to your comment, Ben knew of the Pearl Station at the time of the purge, he was on his way there to deliver supplies (beer) with his father...that's not to say he knew what was going on in the Pearl Station, but he did know it existed.
Also, just a thought..we know (from his other antics)that Ben had to have gotten caught by Danielle on purpose, I'm thinking the reason may just be that he wanted to access the Swan station, which he didn't know the location of.
Congrats to the moms-to-be...and the humorous thing about Rich's comment...we all have beautiful names that are unique AND none of our names can be shortened to DICK!

cour·te·ous
–adjective having or showing good manners; polite.
I have to say that I am shocked and appalled at the words that have been exchanged in this forum lately. It seems that the reason why were are all here has shifted from sharing our love of Daniels Blog and our love for the show; to a contest of who knows more and who's smarted than the other.
It is no longer about LOST. It's about what post is not "good enough" to be here according to someone who is becoming the resident bully. You know who you are, we ALL know who you are.
And for the record Resident Bully, when people post on here it has nothing what so ever to do with you. If someone asks a question that you think is "stupid" please don't attack that person. They did not ask it in the hopes of really pissing you off.
It is fine of you think posts are stupid, you are free to think what you want. But you don't need to be the almighty and tell them so.
And the same goes for all of us who have insulted our resident bully and picked on him. He might be asking for it in the way he replies to posts but we are no better than him by retaliating.
Come on LOST friends, this is not who we are. Can we please just kiss and make up? Or can we at least agree to disagree?

Ana -
I'm really hoping next season will flesh out the timeline a bit more regarding the Others and the Swan.
As you said, the Others were surprised by the effects of the Discharge and the writers said they didn't know about the Swan beforehand. Ben certainly knew about the Pearl and was using it when Paolo entered to hide the diamonds. But the question is, when did that start? If we go by Lostpedia's timeline:
Day 41: The Beechcraft falls, injuring Boone
Day 44: Locke blows the Hatch, the Others take Walt
Day 49: Paolo hides the diamonds in the Pearl
One scenario is that the Others knew of the Pearl, but since they didn't know of the Swan they simply didn't use it to monitor anything until the Hatch was blown, sometime between Days 44 & 49
But another scenario is that even if they knew of the Pearl, they may not have known where it was buried (Ben may not have ever made a supply drop with his dad, and they certainly didn't arrive at their destination on Purge Day). When the beechcraft fell, however, the Others may have investigated and stumbled across the Pearl (sometime between Day 41 and Day 49), which they then used to monitor what was going on in the Swan.
I don't think the illness is the Purge - I think it's a red herring created to keep people in their respective hatches (something alluded to in the Lost puzzle clues - I'll do a post on that tomorrow perhaps). Danielle's crew's illness could have been something else entirely.
Just random thoughts with the data we have. We really need some more DHARMA flashbacks though...

JODI (and all the Mommy's-to-be): Congrats! Funny you should ask that question about naming child after a character. I was in the same situation when I was about to have my son. My favorite show at time was "Sex and the City". Yup, you guess it, my son's name is Aidan (after one of Carrie's boyfriends). Interestingly enough, there are 3 other Aidans in his Kindergarden class (2 boys and 2 girls) all spelled differently! Go Figure!
For you, I vote for Claire or Henry (not basing them on characters, just nice names.) Good Luck on your name hunt!

Jay:
Thanks for the response, much appreciated. Random thoughts is all we have. I still believe that Ben (not necessarily the rest of them) knew about the Swan and the Pearl, only because my brain can't comprehend otherwise. I also still believe that something is "off" about Danielle. I read on Lostpedia about her timeline being a little askew. Did you read that as well? What do you think about a previous post from a regular (that no longer posts due to a "resident bully") that Annie could be Danielle? That she was brainwashed (in room 23, perhaps) and was released with a bogus story implanted in her brain. It can potentially explain why she's been allowed to roam free AND why she has never really 'found' anything substantial. Like hatches, elctro fence, compound, farm with cows, etc. But the big red flag about Danielle for me was when she said that Ol Smokie is a security system. How does she know that? Unless, she retained some memories post brainwashing. Just a thought.
