Tabula Rasa
Welcome back to another Throwback Edition of the "Lost" Diary.
As you may have noticed in last week's comments, we have a reader by the name of Allen who actually hasn't seen "Lost" before and is using my re-watching of season one as his excuse to finally watch the show. This got me thinking...
I am writing this article from the point of view of a "Lost" fan who is going back to re-watch the show, looking for clues and themes that we couldn't have possibly picked up on at the time. Even just knowing the characters like we do now makes seeing them in the beginning so interesting. Remember when Kate didn't suck? Remember how Jin and Sun used to be so distant? Remember Michael and Walt?
But what about the person reading this who hasn't seen every episode like we have? Am I ruining the show for them if I mention something from season three? Is this really the best way to watch the show for the first time? Well, when you think about it, who better to guide someone along the journey that is "Lost" than me? And, by extension of course, the rest of you?
Hang on while I pat myself on the back for a second. Ok, done.
So Allen, to you I say welcome ... and be careful. I don't want to spoil anything for you, but we probably will, so be sure to read everything with one eye closed. To the rest of you I say don't hold back. Don't refrain from talking about things because Allen or one of the newbies might get spoiled -- they know the deal going in.
By the way, it's soooo weird to refer to Allen by name. Usually I just call him Dad.
Let's roll:
00:00 -- The opening shot of this episode shows one of the things that irks me about "Lost" -- too many survivors. Obviously, you have to suspend disbelief many times when you watch this show. But the fact that so many people survived the crash always bothers me. Plus, we never meet any of the "other" Losties anyway (except for the two that shall not be mentioned).

But the fact that so many people survived the crash always bothers me. Plus, we never meet any of the "other" Losties anyway (except for the two that shall not be mentioned).
00:01 -- "Dangerous. She's dangerous." -- the Marshal. I'd be willing to take my chances.
00:02 -- One of my favorite things about watching the early episodes is how the focus used to be about hoping to get rescued and now it's about rescuing themselves. Sort of reminds me of a line from "Fight Club" -- "It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything."
00:04 -- I could listen to Sayid read the phone book.
00:05 -- "Because dinosaurs are extinct." -- Jack. Hurley was probably the kid that said "Why?" everytime you told him something until you just eventually had to go, "Because I said so."
00:06 -- "What do you think she did?" -- Hurley. Man, I remember I was dying to know what Kate did. Then the episode where they told you what Kate did was actually called "What Kate Did." I loved that.
00:07 -- After a pissing contest around the fire, we get our first official flashback: Kate on the run in Australia. The flashbacks from season one were great little mini-shows unto themselves. By season three, they became all about leading up to telling us one little thing. I still love the flashbacks, and I hope they don't get rid of them, but they need to be spruced up a bit.
00:08 -- "Annie." -- Kate. People love to make the leap that because Kate used "Annie" as an alias, she is actually Henry Gale's "Annie." Look for this theory to be part of an article I am going to write called "Reader Theories I Hate."
00:13 -- I liked it better when Sawyer and Jack hated each other.
00:14 -- "I'm in the wild." -- Sawyer. Really stupid line, but also telling: Sawyer was the first person to accept their fate. He saw the evidence that was mounting and decided to dig in for the long haul. Very pragmatic.
00:15 -- Jin was a douche bag.
00:16 -- Is Hurley speechless around Kate because he thinks she's "dangerous" or because she's the hottest girl to ever speak to him? I can't blame him -- I'd forget my own name is she was talking to me.
00:18 -- "Everyone deserves a fresh start." -- Ray. One of the themes of the show right there.
00:20 -- On death's the door, the Marshal uses every ounce of strength he has to try and choke Kate to death. The job is over, pal. Let it go.
00:21 -- Patsy Cline makes her first appearance on "Lost." Funny how even on this show, music is never a coincidence.
00:22 -- "What are you looking for, Ray?" -- Kate. (Me shaking my head) Ray, man, why'd you do it?
00:23 -- The transition in and out of the flashbacks is a little rusty, isn't it? Those few slow-motion seconds are just terrible.
00:24 -- "I'll get your dog back as soon as it stops raining." -- Michael. Man, Walt was a little brat.
00:25 -- Island rule #1: Don't wander into the jungle alone.
00:26 -- Michael stumbles upon a naked Sun. I maintain she is criminally underrated by the male viewers of "Lost."
00:29 -- "She got to you too." -- Mars. Hello, have you seen her? Stranded on a deserted, I would do whatever Kate told me to. Hell, anywhere I would do exactly what Kate told me to.
00:32 -- The entire car crash scene was designed to let us know that while Kate "did something," she wasn't a bad person. And really, what she did was, in her own way, the equivalent of pulling Ray out of a burning truck.
00:33 -- I never get tired of watching Oceanic Flight 815 tearing apart.
00:35 -- "Oh, no way." -- Hurley. Apparently Sawyer can't kill a half-dead guy from two feet away. Doesn't reflect well on him, given his profession.
00:36 -- R.I.P. Edward Mars.
00:37 -- If I have one complaint after the first three hours of "Lost," it's this: not enough Locke. The scene with the dog whistle is just the first of what would be many, many great Locke moments.
00:39 -- "Three days ago we all died. We should all be able to start over." -- Jack. And there is season one in a nutshell. Every episode showed us that our Losties had two sides to their personality: what they were off the island and what they are on it.
00:42 -- I am a sucker for a good musical montage. Loved the final shot of Locke, though. He's the only one who knows that something is going on on this island.
This episode laid out the narrative for the rest of the show. Not only were we going to see what happened to the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 on the island, we were going to learn about what they were like off of it. But that's not all! Oh by the way, the producers also gave us mysteries in their backstories too. I don't know about you, but as the show went on I found myself just as curious in getting the answers to the backstory mysteries as I was the mysteries of the island.
In an odd way, as I go about the task of re-watching the first two seasons, I am more looking forward to some of the great backstories than I am the island ones. Weird, right?
Anyway, I have to give this episode a B. Only the backstory was particularly interesting as the mystery of the island took a break. As I have written several times before, I liked it when there were good and bad guys among the Losties, so these early episodes when Sawyer and Jin were assholes are great to me.
Alright, here is my question to you this week: Assuming you're like me and you haven't seen season one in a long time, what are you most looking forward to seeing again?
We've been getting great questions here in the off-season, so the L.D.Q.A. is going strong. Keep sending them to me at questions@thelostdiary.com.
See you next week.

Well, I was right.......It wasn't as horrendrous as I thought it would be but man, did i cry like a baby when Locke made the whistle to help find Vincent!!! And seriously, if I would have seen this the first time around, Locke would have been easily the first of my favorite characters RIGHT from the beginning! There's just something about him that, yes, is very eerie yet you can just tell there's something about him that just makes him not only a great character but a great personality! He would have been the one I would have been drawn to if I was stuck on an island!
It's very interesting as well, since I am seeing most of these episodes for the first time, that you really see how much this show has come along since the beginning! I would have never guessed Jin was such an asshole and Sun was so meek & mild. Even with Sawyer, you see he has REALLY started to have feelings and concerns for the people on the island compared to when they crashed and he only thought of himself.
The main thing I really want to get from watching the first season is having the solid foundation of everyone! I know of Hurley's story (it's one of the only episodes I saw of the first season) but the main one is Sayid I want to find out about!!! He's SO great! As much as there needs to be more Locke, there needs to be LOTS of Sayid!
Until next time,
me! =)
PS- 1, Hi Allen! Welcome! (Can we call him dad, too?!) & 2, Glad I just watched one epsiode......I almost started the next one but I thought I would check the diary first! =)~

Hi Daniel and fellow Losties! Ok I'm starting to have dreams about the show! This is so cool watching Season 1 again. I can't believe how many details I forgot, and I agree it makes the characters so much more interesting to look back this way! I know this doesn't pertain to Season 1, but I am most looking forward to when Ben is captured. Sorry I still call him Ben!
It's also very interesting to see how much the show has changed and how far it's come since Season 1. I used to always complain that they drag things out too much, but seeing how it was to where we are probably going with Season 4, it's really amazing to think of all the changes.
See you next week!

I forgot to say, I've never seen Fight Club but that quote gives me the chills! In a good way!

Hello Allen (aka Daniel's Dad), and wecome to the wonderful show called "Lost" and to your son's "Lost" blog! Enjoy the show and especially enjoy the wit and wisdom of your son..... we all do!
PS - If Tony ever makes any disparaging remarks about you, let me know - I'll take care of that internet tough guy! ;-)

Since you and I bantered back and forth about the Kate/Annie thing and you have never once gave credence to my Mental Hospital theory, I have a feeling that I'm not going to like you Theories I Hate article very much... !
I'm not watching Season 1 along with you but I am enjoying reading your weekly posts- Thanks Daniel!

I look forward to seeing Locke's story unfold again. I watched the first episode of Lost because I was a fan of Matthew Fox, but right from the start Locke became my favorite. I also loved Hurley, he always made me laugh. BTW, Fight Club is one of my favorite movies, if you haven't seen it - you should.

Daniel, as always you brighten a Thursday! Hi Allen, I hope you really enjoy your son's blog as much as we do! He is very insightful and extremely funny.
Hey Rich, I just wanted you to know that in the begining I wasn't a huge fan of yours, but since your spat with Tony you have really turned out to be a cool guy with some good commentary. I sincerely apologize for anything I said that was rude or negative.
On a Lost note:
Re-watching Season 1 makes me want to kill Boone's sister (Shannon, right?). Watching her on the screen to me is like nails on a chalk board. I feel like Daniel wanting Charlie to die. Sorry I just had to get that out there. I concur with Daniel on hearing Sayid read the phone book, that guy is a stud!
Have a great day all you Losties!

Aw man I'm already starting to forget these episodes. Oops. I remember Sawyer's inability to shoot Mars though. Ugh. I enjoyed seeing the entire season since I never started watching the show until halfway through season two, so it was nice to see it from the very beginning.
Posted by: Jessie | June 7, 2007 06:10 AM
Oh yeah. Hi Daniel's dad!
Posted by: Jessie | June 7, 2007 06:11 AM
I'm also watching these along with you, and have seen them all only once before. I'm also looking forward to the back-stories (I remember when every backstory made you completely rethink characters and sometimes the whole show... cool stuff) and agree with you about not everyone being likeable being a good thing.
But I think what I'm most looking forward to is Locke being Locke (Despite the constant presence of my favorite character, I disliked Hatch-Jon and loved 3rd-season Jon, although it felt like he only had about one episode's worth of screentime) and I'm excited to watch the Others pull their stunts, knowing what we know now.
I'm least looking forward to the inevitable plot holes that will arise from going back and scrutinizing the episodes.

Daniel, I agree with you about being more interested in the flashbacks this time around...I feel like I missed things the first time. Like you, and so many others, this is my first time rewatching S1 since the original airings.
I'm also interested in Danielle this time around, I want to know more about her strange (and often hypocritical) ways. With that said, did anyone think it was weird that Ray was missing an arm? Didn't one of Danielle's team lose an arm or something?
I don't know if there's any kind of connection, I just thought that was worth making a mental note about, but sometimes I think that I look into things too much...I think it was Ana on the last Thurs. board that made a great comment...I look at twig, and I think -does that mean something? Yeah, I do that all the time and I start to feel crazy.
Oh and Shannon is the most annoying character, she totally beats Charlie...did anyone notice that he had the Sharpie?
Welcome Dad, aka Allen!!! I agree with Me:) we should call him Dad...hope you're enjoying the show so far.

To answer your question Daniel, I look forward to see the "Others" and mostly Henry Gale (Ben), as he is now. The show has become so much more intense since his twisted mind has been revealed to us. Is he lying? I alway have to question that when he makes any statement. I do however love the whole mystery of Locke from the beginning. I thought the crash made him him into some kind of prophet or healing man durning all of season one. Who knew!
I look forward to Walt's flash back too. There is still so much mystery there. What ever he see's or thinks appears and happens like the polar bear and the comic book.
Thanks Daniel...I just love your column...Keep up the great writing...YOU ROCK!

Hi dad! :-) Welcome to the party.
On a side note...I was just over at the TMZ site for the first time in several weeks (yes, I was sucked in by the whole Paris Hilton debacle) and I hopped on over to the LOST section for old times sake. OMG! The people there are so unbelieveably rude, I could barely read through some of the comments. I am just really glad that we have such a nice community here. Thanks, Daniel, for starting this great blog.
And, yes, I could listen to Sayid read the phonebook too...among other things. :-P
widsl
PS - Shannon = by FAR the most annoying character. She almost made me stop watching in the very beginning. And when her and Sayid got together, seriously, I wanted to throw the TV out of the window.

Hello All! A special shout out to LIT, alison, Lauren, Ana, Sheesh (where have you been?!), bandirun and Tony.
Did anyone notice that as soon as Michael said that he'd look for the dog after it stopped raining, SUDDENLY it stopped raining!? It could be the lovely tropical weather or Walt...I'm betting on WALT!
Ah Kate: so wonderful when she was a total bad a$$.
Welcome Allen (Dad)!
Answer to your question: I can't wait to see the Losties finding the caves and taking inventory of what they found there. I've totally forgotten.
Posted by: Janice (Belle) | June 7, 2007 07:53 AM
Daniel, how cute are you with your dad!! Ditto on the Annie thing, grrr. And OMG I had the exact same reaction to Sawyer! He has always accepted their fate. But he's such a horrible shot!! In retrospect, one thing that I have found amazing is how Sayid has been consistently bad-ass.
And that quote that Jack said about second chances, well considering this came out of Jack it is sooo understandable how he is falling apart in the 'real' world. (FF) It's like HIS second chance was taken away; he had to go back to being the old Jack. Kinda sad.
...but 1 thing has always bugged me, I mean bugged me big time: THE TARPS!! Where in the hell do they get their never-ending supply of tarps! The local jungle Wal-Mart? Big5 around the second palm tree to the left? Why would a plane carry blue tarps? You cant really notice them until the next couple episodes...they even have extras up until Juliet joins the Losties...grrrr.
Helo Mr Burns!! Hi to all my buddies!
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 07:54 AM
Carly, are you here? Do you still wanna know what the black talking bubbles said in Walts comic book?
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 08:02 AM
Hi Daniel and fellow "Losties"!
Also Hi Allen! Hope you enjoy Lost as much as the rest of us do- it can be frustrating at times- and you may want to give up once or twice- but don't- it's worth it.
I am most looking foward to meeting or finding out about the others. I remember when I first watched it how I was totally creeped out by "Mr. Friendly." I nearly passed out when I finally got a good look at him. And also the feeling with the "Losties" that they were never going to feel safe or ever have a chance to get off this island because of these people.
Well everyone have a good day!
Amber
Posted by: Amber | June 7, 2007 08:05 AM
Ana - I totally agree with you about the tarps. I have always wondered that too. I've never been on a plane tho' - so I never really questioned it, but it does seem like an awful big supply for one plane, and what exactly would they use them for on the plane?
Posted by: Tracy | June 7, 2007 08:22 AM
widsl,
i posted a question for you on the q&a where you guys discussed favorite shows. i am traumatized at work by your comments about SG1...please respond. thanks.
Posted by: dalanadee | June 7, 2007 08:30 AM
Tracy: THANK YOU!! Maybe if the plane starts leaking during stormy weather, the flight attendants tie them to the plane:) Seriously, does anyone out there in cyber space know if a plane would carry tarps?!?! I think I'm going to e-mail Daniel this question...
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 08:31 AM
Hi there -- first time poster but I have been a rabidly voracious reader since the beginning of this past season!
Daniel, kudos to the almost Lost-esque buildup to the intro of Allen! :) You started as if Allen was just another one of us faceless posters and then BAM you tell us he's your father... :) Lindelof and Cuse would be proud!
I have to say the seaon one moment I'm looking most forward to our first encounter with Ethan Rom. Whenever I see him in the later episodes I still get shudders and say "OH NO!!! Creepy Ethan!" To which my husband rolls his eyes.
Keep up the great work, Daniel and I look forward to getting to know the rest of you all
Posted by: Christine | June 7, 2007 08:36 AM
Ana - Jungle Wal-Mart....LMAO - too funny and too true!!
Janice - the weather -I'm with you, that was all Walt.
Posted by: mr burns | June 7, 2007 08:38 AM
Christine - You nailed it! Daniel totally surprised us in glorious Lost fashion of the true identity of Allen. Thanks for posting. You made me smile. :-) (And, yes, kudos to Daniel for the style.)
Dalanadee - I will go back a try to find your question. Back in a few.

Hi Daniel's Dad! Hey everyone. I have to agree with most everybody, Shannon was the pits, I absolutely hated her and how she treated Boone. I agree with you Daniel, lots of survivors in this plane crash. Maybe too many, but that's just one of the mysteries of Lost! Thanks for the blog.
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 7, 2007 08:47 AM
Ana I agree w/ you about the tarps- but (and I'm sure someone has pointed out sometime) How come Sawyer's hair has gotten longer while Jack's is always cut short and Sun's hair has grown like 6 inches and Claire has bangs now- I know some of it can be explained- maybe they have a working electric shaver and scissors but with them only on the island for such a short time you would think they pick up these little inconsistincies- or maybe I'm a nit-picker and bored- sorry just some random thoughts here...
Posted by: Amber | June 7, 2007 08:48 AM
Good observation Christine!! I wonder what other Lost tendencies Daniel will reveal....Some of our regulars have mysteriously disappeared...Daniel did you take them with Allen, I mean Jacob?
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 08:49 AM
Amber: I know there are a lot of things that don't add up. But I feel that Sawyer has been the only one that shows the "wear and tear" of jungle life...what do you think?
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 08:53 AM
Dalanadee - I have posted a response to the SG-1 question on the Q&A page. Hope it helps.
Posted by: widsl | June 7, 2007 08:54 AM
hehe I agree Ana. Sawyer, of all the men, seems to have that jungle look going on. I mean Jin, Locke, and Jack all seem to be groomed hair wise. Sayid and Hurley- their hair is the same as it was the day of the crash too. Of all the women, Kate is more jungle-fied. The rest stay pretty much groomed.
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 7, 2007 08:57 AM
Yeah widsl, it sucks that SG1 is cancelled. I will miss that show!
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 7, 2007 09:01 AM
Susan: I'm glad you're with me! I wonder if any of my observations bother people...I mean they are sooo not relevant to the plot of the show!!!
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 09:02 AM
Walkabout, Walkabout, Walkabout. the best LOST episode EVER. period. counting all 3 seasons. that is what i'm looking forward to the most. rewatching the first episode about Locke. when his mysertious, complex, and amazing character unfolds. and the ending! exquisite. didn't leave a dry eye in the house!
i regret to inform that i'm not re-watching season 1 because i don't have the DVD's, but i WILL borrow someone's to re-watch Walkabout. it's coming up in the next one or two episodes i think.
hi to my girls!! Janice/Bell, Ana, Alison, Scarlet, Tracey, me!, and Kelly Formerly Freckles :)
Posted by: Lauren, the LOST Nazi | June 7, 2007 09:09 AM
Can they kill Shannon off earlier this time around? PLEASE?! I guess not. Sigh. But Sayid and John rocked from the get-go, and they still rock! I can't wait to relive the losties' first encounter with "the others."
Posted by: cathead67 | June 7, 2007 09:10 AM
Nope your observations are just fun. Just like everyone says, when someone sees something you do not see in an episode it just makes it more fun and interesting. And nothing in this show is not relevant. Er, I mean everything is relevant. It all means something...... I think? haha!
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 7, 2007 09:11 AM
Oh, and I'm with Lauren re Walkabout!
Posted by: cathead67 | June 7, 2007 09:13 AM
Lauren!! Finally! i agree about walkabout. You can always see the episode for free!!

Most looking forward to: The world according to Locke. I loved his air of all-knowing wisdom and mystery in the beginning. (And still actually.)
Now we have heard about your friends, your mom, your dad. Any pets we need to assimilate into our little Lost clan?
Posted by: michy | June 7, 2007 09:17 AM
I have to say that I have a problem with details when they don't add up. When there is something wrong with a set or the background or the character- I have such a hard time watching a show without constantly thinking about that one thing- (maybe I have a minor case of OCD) But when Jack in the season finally of Season 3 had that horrible beard- (and yes I think we can all agree it just horrible) it was longer than his hair- Now if a man who was clearly coming undone like he was- why was he shaving his head but not shaving his beard?
Ok- That's been bugging me for the longest time. I know it's minor and not important but I had to let it out. *deep breath* I'm better now.
And yes Ana- Sawyer is wearing the jungle a whole lot more that any of the other people beside Rousseau- she's jungle woman! And maybe it has to do with the fact that he has accepted his fate with "being in the wild". Although Sawyer never looked hotter!
Posted by: Amber | June 7, 2007 09:17 AM
I can't wait for the episode where Sun is going to leave Jin at the airport, and he shows her a little flower he got for her and she decides to stay with him - love that moment!
Posted by: Kaiti | June 7, 2007 09:23 AM
Amber - I agree with you about Jack's hair in the flash forward. I thought maybe his beard grows really fast, but if that's the case why doesn't he have a beard on the island? I do remember they got scissors in the hatch, I think Claire used them to cut Charlie's hair in an episode, so maybe she cut her bangs too and we just didn't see it. Maybe that will be in a flashback in season 4, since I think everyone has commented on it. ;o) But I don't think Jack's hair could be kept that short with just scissors. So, yeah, little things like that annoy me too.
Posted by: Tracy | June 7, 2007 09:39 AM
I never answered Daniel's question: I'm looking forward to the moment when the Others take Walt. I mean I remember FREAKING out at the thought that wanted just to take the children...and that they had a boat! The creepy factor will never be as high as it was in the first season, in my opinion.
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 09:53 AM
I am waiting to see if the others seem more human this time around. I remember they seemed super human to me. I also loved Walkabout the Locke flashbacks show how much he has changed he went from a pathetic guy in love with a phone sex opperator to a bad ass almost creepy hero type. Lauren Yvette posted a website that you can see all the past shows on you should check it out http://www.tv-links.co.uk/show.do/1/53
Posted by: Laura | June 7, 2007 10:08 AM
Ok, ok, ok...so this has been bothering me for the longest time ever, so I'm gonna say it....(Dad (aka Allen) stop reading, this hasn't been discovered for you yet)
After the hatch was destroyed, why wasn't anyone pissed? I would be super mad...I mean, with the Hatch they had a place to shower, use a real bathroom and laundry facilities, all things that I enjoy in modern life...they were just like - oh, the hatch was destroyed? oh well. I never got the feeling that anyone on the beach was upset about it being gone...and people knew it had ammenties. I also still want to know how the new washer and dryer got there, bothers me so much and it's so stupid.
Unless Ana is correct and next season we find out there IS a jungle Wal-Mart, just past the Black Rock, but before the Pearl Station - ha ha ha.
Posted by: mr burns | June 7, 2007 10:11 AM
Laura, that's awesome! i'll have to check it out!! thanks :) So now i can watch all summer, hooray!

That bothered me to Mr Burns I still wonder why they havent moved to one of the other stations they know about...... I would rather sleep on the floor indoors then on the beach getting sand up my butt.
Posted by: Laura | June 7, 2007 10:15 AM
Mr Burns: Good point. But I got another one for you: Why wouldn't they question the number ritual?!? I would so ask a trillion questions about numbers, computers, 108 minutes....What? Who? When? How? Que? WTF?

What? Who? When? How? Que? WTF? LMAO I think that applys to the whole show
Posted by: Laura | June 7, 2007 10:24 AM
LAUREN: Its cool. Just download the player (DivX) and enjoy! One drawback is that you have to put up with funky subtitiles, small price to pay!
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 10:26 AM
thanks for the sg-1 info widsl & susan.
Posted by: dalanadee | June 7, 2007 10:28 AM
Ana- I was SO thinking the same thing about the tarps!!! It bugged me to a point I was even going to ask next time I was on a plane, "Do you have tarps on here?"!
Amber- Don't worry.....OCD has it's advantages & disadvantages.....But good point on the "fugly" looking beard!
Christine- You couldn't have said it better when it came to Daniel "revealing" who Allen really is! It took me by surprise and damn it, made me chuckle and say, "Aww, that's really cute!"
& Lauren- HI!!!! =) I think another drink sometime should be planned!
I've got to say, I truly enjoy coming on here and getting to know and read everyone's thoughts! It's such a nice lil' community & I am so glad Daniel has brought us all together! I only wish we were all closer to each other , travel distance wise!
Ok, I think I'm done being corny....
Talk to you all later,
me =)

Mr Burns: I know how you feel about the washer/dryer thing...I mean it has nothing to do with anything but it sticks in your mind like freaking thorn: Tarps, haircuts, new appliances
Laura: No kidding! I guess thats why I obsess about the little things, because the whole show can potentially drive you Libby-Mad!
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 10:33 AM
I know, Laura, I hate sand! I'm not much for bugs either, so if I'm gonna be stranded on some strange island and we found some shelter (stations, in this case), I'd be all over that sh*t...and at least you're somewhat safe from that "monster" thing.
Ana, it seemed to me the number thing was kinda dropped after the Hatch blew up, and they're all over the place and no one (other than Hurley) seems to see the connection - I still want to know how the numbers play into the storyline.
Posted by: mr burns | June 7, 2007 10:37 AM
Mr Burns, better yet why wasn't there a revolt? I mean a mad rush to say "F this I'm taking the top bunk!"
They were all more willing to move into the caves than the hatch.WTF! Dirt floor-warm bed? I can see the dilema....
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 10:43 AM
thanks Ana! i can totally get over the subtitles :)
hi me! yes, we need to have another LOST night out!
Posted by: Lauren, the LOST Nazi | June 7, 2007 10:48 AM
Any who...did anyone elase think it was funny when Sawyer called Sayid "Aljazeera" and Charlie responds "That's a network"
Loved it!
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 10:48 AM
BTW- Mr. Burns, I think I love you....lol you're too cute! For all I know, you're a 13 year old girl but find me on Myspace! =D
OH! Speaking of Myspace, Daniel, it hit me while I was looking on the Myspace page and the next "get together" should be for when you surpass brody jenner's number on Myspace! Now THAT'S something to celebrate!
K, I just noticed (not counting the one I'm about to type) that I wrote Myspace like 4 times in 2 sentences.........geez. =(
I'm going to go be productive!
me! =)

I want to buy the first season so badly. But it's $50.00. Oy. I heart this show.
To answer your question about the first season...
I am most looking forward to Clair meeting the psychic. That was way creepy. Remember the whole thing where he wouldn't read her fortune and that darkness surrounded her? And he got her to go to Los Angeles?
I remember being so blown away at that. I wanted to know why and how and everything. I am hoping they go into that a little more when the show comes back. What kind of darkness did he mean? Maybe he knew what Henry knew about how they shouldn't leave the island?
Oh! And when we first me Rousseau. When she put Sayid on that electrical bed while she mumbled French in the corner? That was great.
Thanks for posting Daniel :)
Posted by: Hannah (Formerly Bea) | June 7, 2007 10:50 AM
Ana, that's what I'm screaming here - I'm not a camper or anything close, I like hotels..so I would be all about getting into a place that was, first and foremost, COOL. You figure while the Hatch probably doesn't have a/c, it definitely was cool since it was buried. Secondly, I'd want a bathroom and then I'd be looking for a bed.
Then, lastly, as someone who enjoys food, I'd be checking the food stock and whipping up some good eats for everyone...the hatch did have a working kitchen.
And Me:)..thank you, I'm not 13, just turned 30 (ug)...and although my screen name is mr burns, I am a woman, I was trying to be incognito at first...but you guys rock, so I'll go by my real name from now on...Kerin.
Posted by: Kerin (formerly mr burns) | June 7, 2007 11:00 AM
LMAO Mr Burns came out of the closet and now he is a she.
Posted by: Laura | June 7, 2007 11:08 AM
Hannah: You can buy it used from the Warehouse or F.Y.E., their good about quality, so you wont get anything scratched. It should run about $34 and you can order it on-line
MrBurns- the mystery is gone!! It should have been a slow reveal...keep us all guessing like the show!
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 11:11 AM
Sorry off topic, but I was just watching Harvey on CNN and I could see the TMZ workers in the background...I was looking for you Daniel!
Posted by: Kitty | June 7, 2007 11:33 AM
"Eeeegggggcelent" - mr burns is a chick! Love it!
Kerin - I am with you about the Hatch. I would be totally pissed that it was blown up. And, when Jack/Kate/Sawyer got back to the beach and said that the others were gone, I'd be like "Pack Up Campers! We're movin on up!"
Susan and Dalanadee - you're welcome!
Posted by: widsl | June 7, 2007 11:34 AM
Widsl THANK YOU The others have house's Not one big room, like the hatch but house's with Bedrooms and bathrooms ..... HELLO Losties are you crazy?? It is time to move.

Thanks Ana. I will totally check that out.
Friday is payday so why not? :)
Posted by: Hannah (Formerly Bea) | June 7, 2007 11:54 AM
Regarding the characters: I actually LOVE the fact that we now can find something to like about everyone. But I also think it was very important to go through the beginning when we didn't know WHY. It used to amaze me how often my opinion of Sawyer would change. One week, he was this asshole, the next you see another side. Then he's back to being an asshole again. And it was crucial for us to see their backstories so we'd know why. Remember when we all thought Jin was a paid assassin? Those were the days. But I love character development that we've been able to see.
*hi Daniel's Dad!*

Also Hannah, there's Netflix..that's pretty cheap too

It seemed to take too long of a time for the Marshall to die when he is on an island that heals peoples wounds rather quickly. ?
I too think Henry Gale and Kate are connected in the past and in the future... you can include me with those in your "theories you hate" group
NEW THEORY!!!!!
If you kill someone on the island, you become attached to the island and are not supposed to leave it.
Those who have killed on the island.
1 Jack kills Marshall
2 Lock Kills Naomi
3 Sawyer kills Lockes Dad and Mr Friendly
4 Henry Gale kills his dad
5 Charlie kills Ethan
6 Hurley kills dude w/blue Van in S3 finale
7 Juliet kills bad guy with gun to let Kate and Sawyer sail to other island
Kate didnt kill anyone and this is why when we seem them off the island in S3 finale she is fine, but not Jack.
IM JUST SAYING... it seemed to be a big deal for Henry Gale to want Locke to kill his own dad. Then when Sawyer killed him by walking thru the jungle it seemed to be symbolic of something... walking barefoot thru the jungle to kill a man... seemed too much...
combine that with everyone who has a dead father. Locke, Sawyer, Kate, Henry Gale, Jack, Walt?, Claire.....
ok too much.. ill stop... I LOVE THE LOST DIARY.
Posted by: scott | June 7, 2007 12:07 PM
one more thing...
When Sawyer kills Mr. Friendly in the Season 3 finally, he shoots him in the chest. THE CHEST!!!! HOW DOES HE NOT LEARN HIS LESSON FROM THE MARSHALL.... thats ridiculous. (unless he knew he had more ammo)....(or shooting guys in the chest is his MO)...no its just ridiculous.
Posted by: scott | June 7, 2007 12:13 PM
Scott - I thought that too (about the Marshall not healing) but I think he didn't heal b/c he was gravely injured, kinda like how Boone died (massive injuries)

KERIN: Your revelation made me laugh out loud here at work! It made me realize that we truly don't know everyone here.
How do we know that Ana or LIT or even Daniel is not some LOST producer trying to throw a wrench in our theories or something?
Someone could say their a mom of 4 living in Alaska but they're really working the script for Season 4 and picking up some great ideas from us.
Just food for thought!
Posted by: Janice (formerly Belle) | June 7, 2007 01:04 PM

Must be the day for reveals- Allen is Daniel's Dad- Mr. Burns is Kerin...It's like a mini-episode of lost!
LOL- I agree with you Janice- after all the plotlines they have on Lost- their shiftier than CIA...
And let's play nice- let's go 1 day without bickering. Scott did reveal some interesting things.
Posted by: Amber | June 7, 2007 01:13 PM
I had that same thought about the loss of the hatch, ana, at the beginning of s.3, but then, it always kind of bugged me that the rest of the lostaways didn't seem adequately pissed about how little anyone else ever got to use the hatch...like, there were a couple s.2 episodes where you see people like Charlie and Kate asking to just like, use the shower, and Jack or Sayid telling them no 'cuz they're all into their secret stuff. THAT would piss me off.
also, to answer the question of the week, I am SO looking forward to seeing more of Walt. Walt episodes were up there with Locke episodes for me in Season 1, where not only were they really intriguing and well paced, but you really got a feel from them that you were getting big picture info from them.
Walt was a lot like Locke or Henry gale, their stories always seemed to be crucial to "THE story" y'know? I hope we see more of him in S.4, aging be damned. I wanna know how he does some of the things he does.
ooh. and I think we should call Allen "Good Dad", as a refreshing contrast to all the Bad Daddery we see on Lost. :P
kaitlyn
Posted by: kaitlyn_ti | June 7, 2007 01:19 PM
Uh-Oh - I hope the next big reveal of the day is not that our dear ol' Daniel has Daddy Issues too! Nah! Allen/Dad seems too cool for that. How does it feel to be famous, Allen?
Posted by: widsl | June 7, 2007 01:24 PM
Hi Y'all,
I totally agree with Sawyer and the jungle look. Since Paris Hilton is in the news today I'll go ahead and say it...He's hot!
Kerin and Ana, I totally agree with you on the Hatch and every other safe shelter they have found on the island. Why live on a sandy, cold beach with no running water and it's a totally vulnerable position from a fighting standpoint. It makes no sense and makes them all look stupid!
I think I'm most looking forward to Sawyers backflash. There were a lot of people in that one plus he gets a lot of screen time. Although Hurleys was pretty good too. Especially when he was in the looney bin, or was that this past season?
Posted by: Teresa Lynn | June 7, 2007 01:41 PM
On Scott's post, he mentions how Locke killed Naomi and that got me thinking...
why would Locke be able to kill Naomi without hesitation? But be unable to kill his father or Jack...thoughts?
Also Sun is missing from the list, she killed that woman (Colleen, I think) on the sailboat...which is another question of mine, where do you think they took the sailboat?
Michael's also missing from the list, and he killed two losties, Ana-Lucia and Libby.
Oh and I'm passing it on ======~~~
Posted by: mr burns | June 7, 2007 02:02 PM
Mr Burns: The Lock/Naomi bothered me too! I think it has something to do with Locke's ideas of what is "supposed" to happen on the island. Killing his father was more Ben's test, not the Island. Killing Jack wasn't going to happen because he’s supposed to be there too. Killing Naomi on the other hand, was something that the island needed to maintain its safety and anonymity ..."A sacrifice that the island demanded" (via apparition of Walt) Hence, it was easy for him to kill her.
Posted by: Ana | June 7, 2007 02:14 PM
I think Locke killed Naomi so easily because he had no emotional attachment to her. He couldn't kill his Dad or Jack because of that emotional tie. It could be because of the reasons Ana stated too or it could be any of a hundred other reasons. hehehe who knows! ha! You gotta love the mystery.
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 7, 2007 02:42 PM
Hmmm Ana, you bring up a good point...I will ponder that further this evening (along with all my other unanswered LOST thoughts)
It was great chatting today, I still find myself chuckling over the jungle Wal-Mart comment (too funny) - have a good night!
Chat later ;)

For the first two thirds of season three, I wouldn't have imagined this, but I am most DEFINITELY looking forward to reliving Jack's backstory. There's something so alluring about Matthew Fox in this role.
For season two, it's not a back story, but OMG CAN'T WAIT FOR HENRY GALE'S FIRST APPEARANCE!!
You are going to cost me a lot of money, because I will now be forced to go out and buy the DVDs for each season. Dammit.
Posted by: ali | June 7, 2007 02:49 PM
Bye Mr Burns...maybe you should change your name to Marge, you know since your secret is out...Anyway, it was fun. Thanks for the fun. And lets face it, I know caca 'bout what the hell is going on, just enjoying the ride!! :)

First: Hi LostDad!!! Second: My answer to the question of the week-I'm most looking forward to the Sawyer/Kate kiss when he is tied to the tree. (Can't believe that I am the first female to post this) That has to be THE hottest kiss ever on a network tv show. Also looking forward to hanging out with "Crazy Locke" again. And the thing I am LEAST happy about is listening to Jack whine and cry and give his "Live together, die alone" speach. I may vomit. Jack has to be the biggest crybaby character on tv. GRRR!! I can't stand him!
Posted by: Angel | June 7, 2007 03:31 PM
I haven't been able to buy the DVD set yet, so I rented Season 1, disk 2...because they didn't have disk 1. I just had to watch Lost! But now I'm off schedule with everyone else so I'm not going to comment on the episodes. BUT I do have to agree that Shannon is the most annoying of all, and I don't remember feeling that way the first time around.
Also, someone mentioned that Sawyer looks the most "run down" after 3 seasons. I have to disagree; I think Locke looks much older now than he did in the first season.
Another thing I've noticed is that I seem to have gotten used to the supplies always being available. I just don't question it anymore, where in the first season it was SO irritating. As was already mentioned...tarps??? They always have what they need lol.
The thing I'm most looking forward to in the First Season is buying the DVD so I can be on the same episode as you guys are!!!
Thanks so much for doing this Daniel; it's great!
Posted by: Teresa | June 7, 2007 03:36 PM
Wow, I can't believe I waited this late to read the post, sheesh. Well first of all welcome Allen (Dad) to the best place on earth, lol. Wow Ana the tarps thing was too funny, I had to share with my mom and aunt who were sitting around me at the time. I agree with you me! Sayid had more of a storyline and screen time in season 1, I think he's hot, don't tell my DH. I think the moment I can't wait to see again is when they take Walt and when Sayid tortures Sawyer, two hot men on screen at once, yummo! Also, this episode was titled "Tabula Rasa" for those of you who didn't know what it meant like me here it is- Latin: scraped tablet or clean slate. Hasta manana Losties!

K, I finally went out of the house today and did SOMETHING!!!
Anyways, thanks Yvette! I was actually wondering what the title meant! I was going to look it up and never did! So thanks! It's one least thing I have to do!
So I was talking to my folks (who were actually the ones who got me into the show!) about our "lil" community on here and I was trying to explain somethings that have come up on here and it was like "deer in the headlights"! It was funny.
Anyways, talk to you guys later!

I know this is a little late, but speaking of haircuts and getting a shave....do you all remember that after Ana Lucia brought Michael and Sawyer back to the beach, and after Jack took care of his bullet wound, Kate took Sawyer out into the jungle for a haircut?? Maybe they're all just getting haircuts when we aren't looking. Is also possible that maybe the hatch had a bunch of tarps just laying around? Maybe they raided it for supplies before they blew it up.
Posted by: Bandirun | June 8, 2007 06:19 AM
Bandirun - I was totally thinking that there might have been tarps in the Hatch(es)or even in the supply drops, though that would be weird. And I forgot about that haircut - it was HOT! I think we are meant to assume that the Losties are grooming themselves when we are not looking. Wasn't Charlie shaving in an episode near the end of S3?
Posted by: widsl | June 8, 2007 06:58 AM
I think you're right, he was!! But yeah, if that hatch had stockpiles of food and guns, a working kitchen, shower, washer/dryer set, exercise bike, and god only knows what else, I don't think it's too far off to say that they had tarps and ropes and such in a closet somewhere.
As for the ladies' hair, I think that's something that just can't be helped. Technically, your hair only grows about 1/2 an inch a month. And in reality, the actors and actresses have been growing their hair for like 3 years.
Posted by: Bandirun | June 8, 2007 07:03 AM
Yeah but the tarps are available right after the crash, prior to finding and entering the hatch...so the tarps had to have been on the plane.
Posted by: Kerin (formerly mr burns) | June 8, 2007 07:17 AM
Arghhhh....see, I haven't seen season 1 since it was actually on tv so my memory's a little fuzzy...
Wait a minute...I just had a thought, don't most planes have those safety slide things in case they have to bail out of the plane? Could they have gotten the material from those?
I'm actually gonna be on a plane tomorrow...I think I'll ask the flight attendants if they pack tarps!
Posted by: Bandirun | June 8, 2007 07:55 AM
Hi, everyone. This is indeed Daniel's dad ... and huge thanks for the warm welcome and noob support. I tried giving a couple clues last week -- the reference to a 1952 jungle TV show, "The Prisoner," Daniel getting on my case for not watching the "Lost" DVD's. Anyway, this is a great community and I'm happy to be here.
Speaking of "The Prisoner," so far those roars from the jungle remind me of Rover -- which basically was an enormous white beach ball that would roar, track down, envelop, and return anyone who tried to escape from the Village. In both cases, the purpose seems to be to keep you in your place.
A lot of back story in this episode ("Tabula Rasa") and not as much fun, I'm afraid. Don't get me wrong; Kate's story is intriguing, and I'm thinking her captor is more than just a marshal.
But in a sense, Major Exposition was a welcome sight after the intensity of the pilot. The characters are becoming more dimensional, more real. Kate seems fundamentally decent, Sawyer may have some compassion lurking within, Sun's expression tells me there's a lot going on in there, Charlie seems slimy, Jack is too perfect, and Locke just may have it all figured out.
So, do I see dead people? Is this actually a weird after-life show? Don't get me wrong; I think that would be incredibly cool. But I really got the sense that these folks were trapped between heaven and hell -- if not literally, at least metaphorically.
Also, "Lost" weirdly reminds me of "On the Beach," a 1957 post-apocalyptic novel by Nevil Shute that was made into a movie by Stanley Kramer two years later, starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, and Fred Astaire. The story also involved Australian survivors on a beach, although "Lost" seems far more engaging.
Quick answers: Feel free to call me Dad, too. I love reading this blog and think Daniel's writing is indeed funny and insightful. And I do know what it's like to be semi-famous ... but that's another story.
Posted by: Allen | June 8, 2007 08:19 AM
Come on Dad, that's not fair to tease us like that!!! Please tell us the story of you being sem-famous!!!
Posted by: Rich Deberg | June 8, 2007 08:57 AM
Oh, the intrigue!
Posted by: widsl | June 8, 2007 09:09 AM
Hey Dad you mentioned a rock and roll group before. Spill the beans, cause we all are dying to know!! Yeah, Daniel hates Charlie too. HA! Chip off the ole block I see.
Ok what famous rock group were you in???
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 8, 2007 09:21 AM
I've been a LOST fan for a while, but I'm new to Daniel's blog. Gotta say that this is one of the most friendly blogs that I've ever read/found. You are a great community!
Although I'm not watching, I like revisiting the episodes through Daniel's blog. Reading these, I can remember being intrigued by Locke and his stoic glances and interactions. I didn't like Walt and couldn't wait to see Shannon get hers. I wanted to reform Sawyer and also thought that Jack was boring and that Sayid's voice was insanely wonderful to hear.
The thing I would most look forward to is actually the introduction of Desmond. He was such a HUGE discovery and led to SO many more questions. There is another, but I don't want to give too much away for Allen (Hi Daniel's Dad! - welcome to the LOST universe). Loved what you said about 'The Prisoner' and how you are already looking for clues! Enjoy! Can't wait to read next week Daniel!
Posted by: hoggle75 | June 8, 2007 09:25 AM
Hoggle75 - I must ask, did you get your name from the movie Labyrinth?
Posted by: widsl | June 8, 2007 09:28 AM
Ok I went back and read Dad's previous post. I didn't see a reference to rock and roll. Ok I'm officially nuts I guess. So sorry Dad. Now, how were you semi famous!??!
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 8, 2007 09:29 AM
Ok sheesh, I went back and reread Dad's post ONE MORE TIME, and he said he was a rock and roll warrior!!
So! Were you a roadie? A member of this rock and roll band? Ha! ?????
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 8, 2007 09:36 AM
Roadie, that's what I'm thinking Susan
My guess for the band - Grateful Dead.
Dad, Please tell us the story, inquiring minds want to know...
widsl - I love the movie Labrynith.

Oh, you make me blush....please continue. JK. DAD seems like a loveable guy, wish he would post more often. I am soo excited that he is seeing lost for the 1st time! I can't wait for his reaction to all the big reveals....Lost virgins are truly an extinct creature. I want to study them closely.
Posted by: Ana | June 8, 2007 09:58 AM
Kerin, the Grateful Dead would be soooo cool, but the Beach Boys was my first thought. They weren't hard rock and roll though so could 'warrior' be a word that would describe anyone in that organization??
Posted by: ♥ Susan ♥ | June 8, 2007 10:02 AM
The reason I'm going with the Grateful Dead, he knew what Charlie was doing in the head, so he's hip to the drug culture...and he mentioned the road warrior thing, they were always on tour.
Shout out to Ana - your posts always make me LOL!
Posted by: Kerin (formerly mr burns) | June 8, 2007 10:21 AM
Kerin - I love that movie too. Bowie was great in it, and anything that came from the mind of Jim Henson was brilliant. Muppets ROCK! (OK, how the hell did we get from LOST to Muppets? We are a diverse group.)
Ana, love the Jacob reference. LOL!
Thanks to DAD for giving us a new mystery to figure out while LOST is on hiatus. And here we thought we would have nothing to discuss. Are you at least going to give us hints?
Posted by: widsl | June 8, 2007 10:56 AM
Bowie was in his prime in those black leather pants and those crystal balls that he threw around!
Dad-you are keeping in guessing in a Lost-esque way and I like it! I agree with widsl, drop some hints so we can start unraveling your mystery!
Posted by: Tristan | June 8, 2007 11:19 AM
DAD:
I have some questions to get some clues.
1) Was the music drug-infused or AquaNet-infused?
2) Where are you in the famous scale: 1=a band member (like drummer), 5=one-hit-wonder, 10=possible reunion on reality show and/or
