Walkabout

Welcome back to another Throwback Edition of the "Lost" Diary.

I ended last week's column by asking those of you who re-watching season one along with me (not the newbies) what it is you are most looking forward to seeing again. Well allow me to answer my own question: THIS EPISODE!!!

It's impossible to recapture the feeling of watching this episode for the first time. But I have always maintained that this was the best "Lost" episode ever and certainly gave us the best "reveal" in the show's history. It's a Locke-centric episode and there isn't a character on the show who has gone a greater "journey" (Locke's words) than him.

This is the episode where it begins.

Will this episode hold up three years later? Let's roll:

00:00 -- We're back to the moments after the crash and Locke wakes up on the beach and wiggles his toes -- a seemingly normal reaction after one survives a plane crash. I am always one to point out my favorite camera shots during a show or a movie and the one pictured below is definitely an amazing camera shot.

00:01 -- I'd have had a real tough time falling asleep during those first few nights. I am a light sleeper as it is.

00:02 -- I also would have had a tough time looking inside that plane. The guy who goes peeking in the dark place where the noise is coming from usually doesn't make it back. Learned that one from watching "Scream."

00:03 -- "They're people." -- Kate. I am so glad Jack snapped at her a bit after that line. Just moronic (i.e. typical Kate).

00:04 -- "Any bodies we bury aren't going to stay buried for very long." -- Jack. Heard that line, sort of, before.

00:05 -- Jack wants to burn the dead bodies in the fuselage of the plane. I remember this scene as one of the reasons I liked Jack early on. He is thinking completely practically which is really the only emotion that should be coming into play here.

00:06 -- Sayid said a bunch of words I didn't understand that basically add up to him trying to find the radio tower that we don't see until the end of season three. Kind of wish I could stop him from wasting his time.

00:07 -- "We hunt." -- Locke. This might have been the moment I fell in love with John Locke. Anyone can make a point, but you REALLY make your point when knife-throwing is involved.

00:08 -- I love the look on Michael's face when Locke shows off his suitcase of knives. It's the classic "I let my son hang out with a crazy man" look. Good times.

00:09 -- "Who is this guy?" -- Hurley.

00:10 -- The early banter between Jack and Kate is telling, especially Jack's need to "fix" people -- not just physically. Something tells me Jack always dated the girls that were cool most of the time but were also fully capable of burning down the apartment because the bought the orange juice with "some pulp" when she prefers "no pulp."

00:11 -- Kate is a vegetarian. It could never work between us.

00:12 -- Watching Michael make a fool of himself while he talks to Sun is always great. I wonder if the writers had decided at this point that Sun spoke English? Looking at her facial expressions, part of me says they didn't.

00:14 -- I was going to skip over the Boone/Shannon scene about food until I remembered how it turned out. We all do what we have to do to survive, right?

00:15 -- And she decides to try and flirt her way to fish with Charlie? Not the first place I would have gone if I were her.

00:17 -- As Rose just sits there as Jack talks to her, I can't help but wonder now if she feels that the cancer in her body is gone. Would probably be hard to find the words at that moment.

00:18 -- Michael cracks a joke about missing the steal signal and gets run over by a boar. That'll teach ya.

00:20 -- There are a lot of things I could say about Locke's scene in the break room, but I'll just keep it short: Randy is a dick.

00:21 -- "Don't tell me what I can't do." -- Locke. The first of many time we'll hear that line.

00:22 -- "Don't tell me what I can't do." -- Locke. See?

00:23 -- Watching Charlie and Hurley fish is a great stress reliever after a long day of work. That would totally be me. I would be the worst "Survivor" contestant ever.

00:25 -- "Aren't we all?" -- Rose. Definitely an underrated character.

00:27 -- Watching Locke as a phone sex operator to go with him to Australia is just downright painful. Of all the low moments we have seen Locke in, this might be the lowest.

00:30 -- Watching Locke's reaction to seeing the island monster for the first time was on par with his descriptions of the encounter later. I'd love the show to show that scene again from another angle at some point so that we can see what Locke saw.

00:32 -- Seeing Charlie get caught in between Shannon and Boone did make me feel a little bad for him (yes, it can happen). I've said it before and I will say it again I am sure -- I do miss Boone. Not sure why, just thought he was interesting.

00:33 -- "Doctor, my husband is not dead." -- Rose. How stupid that sounded at the time.

00:34 -- And Jack is having visions of a man in a suit -- his dad. Things are getting good.

00:35 -- "Locke is gone." -- Kate. Have some faith woman.

00:36 -- Jack is now chasing his dead father through the jungle, only to find Locke dragging a dead boar. Don't tell him what he can't do.

00:37 -- The memorial scene is one of "Lost's" better understated moments. When "Lost" does decide to slow things down, it's quite good.

00:39 -- Oh man, it's coming...

00:40 -- "Don't ever tell me what I can't do. Ever! This is my destiny" -- Locke. He found his destiny alright, just not the way he planned.

00:42 -- The next time someone asks me why I love television so much, we're just going to sit down and watch this episode.

I am so glad (and in a way relieved) at well this episode held up for me. It's the first one that truly gave us an idea of what this show was going to be about. Locke was paralyzed before he got to the island and now he isn't -- a truly mindblowing moment.

This episode obviously gets an A+ and remains my #1 episode of all-time. Watching the final scene of this episode, with Locke arguing with the tour guide, made me immediately think of the flashback scene from season 3 when we see Locke getting put in his wheelchair for the first time. I would argue that no character has gone through more, on or off the island, than Locke. It's great to go back and watch it begin again.

OTHER BLOG NEWS

-- If you haven't befriended the "Lost" Diary on MySpace, please do. Brody Jenner is seriously whooping my ass.

-- Keep emailing me your questions for Monday's Q&A column (questions@thelostdiary.com). I am sorry I don't get to every question, but if I don't have a good answer to a  question, I don't put it in. It isn't personal or anything, it's just that "I don't know" wouldn't make for a good answer in the column. I try and pick questions where I feel like I can further the discussion. Sometimes you guys don't even need for that. Which brings me to...

-- Comments. First off, I don't filter, change, edit, or remove any of them. I don't ban people from posting (don't even know how) and I wouldn't even if I could.

Secondly, people need to stop fighting on here. I just don't get it -- we're having great conversations about a television show (and a lot of other things) so why are people so venomous? I am ok with arguing and debate (shit, I love to argue) but it's crossing over into fighting and name-calling and no one ever wins. It's particularly disturbing to me when I read that people want to stop coming here because of it. I want every single person who has ever read this blog or posted a comment to keep reading and posting. And I mean everyone.

Thirdly, I like it when things get off-topic a bit. I mean, you've read the "Lost" Diary before, right? Who gets more off-topic than me? Jennifer Love Hewitt and "Back to the Future" have been mentioned as many times here as Walt. Have fun with it I say. Someone made the suggestion that I should turn the comments into some kind of message board with different threads. Great idea and I will try and look into it.

Fourthly, I got nothing. I just wanted to see if spell check put a red line under the word "fourthly" -- it didn't.

See you on Monday.

I agree with you Daniel, best episode ever! I was so blown away the first time I watched it.

One question though... Who was the woman he was talking to on the sex line? Was it the one he was with after he got scammed by his dad?

lalaloove the posts daniel youre always so funny. since you said we could get off topic, i have a questions for alll the fellas. when u go #2 do u pull ur pants all the way down to your ankles or just to ur knees. my sister and i always wonder what guys prefer to do. please discuss :)

**FAIR WARNING!!! SOME SPOILERS FOR NEWBIES TO "LOST"! PLEASE READ WITH CAUTION!!!!!**

Well, not only was this an amazing episode (1st time EVER seeing it!) but Daniel, this was an AMAZING post! Woot for you!!! =)

I must be some emotional bitch cuz as I walked over to my lap top, I was wiping tears away! God, what a BRILLIANT episode! I can't get over it! And now, I want to either meet a guy like Sayid OR Locke! Two very strong, gone through and know their shit, and just awesome!

The other thing that I think also got to me was Rose......When I started watching in the 2nd season, I remember I just felt bad for her whenever she would say, "My husband is still alive". Don't even get me started on when we found out she was right! That & the "actual" seeing each other will probably be the episodes that I want to see if they still hold up!

And seriously, watching Locke be so determined and yelling @ others to "not tell him what to do!" made me more motivated as a human being to go out and do whatever my lil manatee heart wants and not let anyone tell me "yay" or "nay" about it either!

So yeah, good episode. =)~

Til next time,
me! =)

PS- Klaudia, do you live in the L.A. area? If so, do you listen to Kroq's "Kevin & Bean" in the morning? They actually had a discussion about that topic THIS (Wednesday) MORNING! If not, wow, you sure you're not on the "island" and have special pyschic powers??? ;)

me: i listen to them on my way to work but ive never heard them talk about that. it came up with me and my sister when she went to a public restroom and thought it odd that the person in the stall had their pants around their ankles.... turned out the guy went into the wrong bathroom.... did kevin n bean end up with a conclusion about that??

Daniel, thanks for being cool. i ll never leave no matter how mean Jim is. Kind of like Locke and the island... its meant for me to read your blog.

Lots of mispellings and grammatical errors Daniel, but its ok.

I remember walkabout being better the first time... but it was still good.

There was another bad edit when Jack interupts Kate and Sayid on the beach for no reason at all. Sayid leaves to give Jack and Kate privacy only to have Jack immediately walk away once he gets Kates attention. ... why did he interupt them???

I AM GOING BACK AND RENTING THESE DVDs at Blockbuster... and the BEST THING is listening to the commentary special features... you learn so much about this show when you watch it with the creators commentary audio.

Klaudia: There's a website you can go to listen to clips from Kevin & Bean-- kevinandbeanarchive.com...... Go to today (June 13th) and it's when they're talking to Joel McHale from The Soup and they mention how Tyra Banks was talking about it ON HER SHOW!!! It's great but that's just cuz Kevin & Bean are great!

Enjoy!

me! =)

did anyone else read the "Secondly..." paragraph and feel like they just got yelled at by the "cool teacher"? ouch.

yeah scott, i caught the grammatical errors too.

Excellent review Daniel, as always. I was watching it again (really for the 4th time, I love lost) and everytime I watch Locke on the phone with the sex operator I just want to crawl in bed with him and give him a huge hug. That poor guy, can't someone just cut him a break?!? It really just shows you that he has so much faith in his destiny that he is willing to put up with pricks like Randy. He just got dealt such a crappy hand off the island that even though some of his current choices seem questionable, he really seems to believe he is following his fate. That itself it such a cool thing to watch evolve and why Locke is one of my favorite characters.

On another note, thank you Daniel for your "Secondly" paragraph. Things were getting a little out of control and they don't need to be that way. We have a lot of great people that blog here and are a part of our little lost family. I know I would be extremely disappointed if anything happened to this blog. So I motion that we start from this episode and keep things on a nice, even, clean page. We are all here to discuss many things and we can all do it pleasantly. Have a great day you crazy Losties!!

I second that motion!

btw...this is my number one episode too..I remmeber crying after seeing that Locke couldn't go on the safari...my heart just went out to him and I've been in love with him since.

John's destiny WAS the island. It was so hard to watch John in the wheel chair again. Since watching this episode the first time, I too have had to spend some time in a wheel chair and I can totally understand John better. Unless you've been a mile in someone's shoes you think you understand but you really don't.

I too had to convince my husband, I CAN DO this, about anything. Washing dishes to cooking dinner. It was difficult but I didn't want the "chair" to be my life (and it could well have been, I almost lost my leg) and neither did John. Admirable considering he was totally paralyzed and I only had a broken ankle.

It was painful to see him being treated less than a man by Randy, heartbreaking to see him almost beg for companionship, and devastating to see him denied his "destiny".

I admire people who overcome their diablities, whatever they are. You are right Daniel, of all the characters it seems like Locke has overcome the most. I imagine he knows, for him, the island is a God-send. They need each other it seems.

Loved the episode, love this blog. I hope everyone has a great day.

overcome their DISabilities, even.

Great Post as always Daniel. This is such a great episode, not only because it reveals so much about Locke, but it also brought Jacks dad back into the picture. I remember thinking wow, this show is going a little "twilight zone" here; anything can happen.....

Maria, I just read the article on the mobisodes. I've never heard of a mobisode before. 90 second blurbs?? Sounds interesting doesn't it?

Susan,

I found this episode hard to watch the first time too. I hate it when people with disabilities are ridiculed and I wanted to smack Locke's boss....and I'm not a violent person here okay.. Randy just really pissed me off. After seeing Locke pervail and really become one of the stongest characters on the island I can appreciate his journey so much more. Because he came from such a desparate place it makes his accomplishments stand out even more.

Kudos to you for overcoming your injury.

Hey it's cool about the mobisodes. They are going to give us just enough to keep us hungry it seems. Just might work!

It sounds like they have the original cast involved in the mobisodes too.

Anyone watch Rescue Me last night?? I love Dennis Leary. He is so gritty and hot. Plus he makes me laugh my ass off.

When I first started watching LOST, Walkabout was the first episode I ever watched from beginning to end and it got me hooked. So, I agree, this is my favorite episode bar none.

I just read the CNN article, thanks for the link, Maria.

so happy about the mobisodes! i was really concerned about getting bored this fall. i wonder how much that will affect my phone bill though.

Great Blog, Daniel! (Thanks for the "Secondly", I hope they listen, if not you can always bench them during recess!)

I read the article, I have Verizon, so I'm super excited about the mobisodes.

I like the way that the producers admit that they made a HUGE mistake with Nikki and Paolo. They buried them alive, just for US!!!

I caught that too about Nikki and Paolo. So we weren't all crazy for hating them. Kind of funny actually athough it still creeps me out they were buried alive :0 but I was glad to see them go.

Sorry Teresa Lynn, I just could not get into Rescue Me. I think you either love or hate Dennis Leary. Ha!

00:07 -- "We hunt." -- Locke. This might have been the moment I fell in love with John Locke. Anyone can make a point, but you REALLY make your point when knife-throwing is involved.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Daniel. LOVE LOVE LOVE Locke! It's his destiny, brutha, and he's workin' it!

Susan, my husband is a firefighter and the show is sooooo realistic as far as how they all treat each other. That's why I'm so into it. Some crazy sh*t.

I loved Locke too from this episode on. But lately the man is loosing me. I am hoping I can feel the love again.

Yeah it seems like Locke has gone over the edge. He doesn't want to leave the island and he doesn't want anyone else to either. Maybe he is afraid, like Ben, that if anyone else knows the islands mysteries or secrets then the island will not be the same or the island will be exploited or whatever. I guess he's afraid that the island will take the gift of his legs away too. Who knows! Ha!

Way cool your hubby is a firefighter. God bless him!

Locke has such freedom on the island. Why would he want anybody to destroy that?

I understand why he doesn't want to leave the island, I mean what does he have to go home to? I'm sure he thinks he will not be able to walk again either. But wouldn't it be cool if he could walk and then he went back to his office and punched Randy's lights out??? LOL

That would Make My Day!!!

00:33 -- "Doctor, my husband is not dead." -- Rose. How stupid that sounded at the time.
Daniel, I don't think this really sounded "stupid" I mean what Rose said afterwards made sense, the tailies are probably thinking the same thing about them. I mean both pieces of the plane crashed. 00:35 -- "Locke is gone." -- Kate. Have some faith woman. Have some faith Jack that Bernard is still alive.

Some quotes I loved from Sawyer: "Right behind you Jackass?" When Jack thought Sawyer was in the fuselage. "And you gave him his knife back?" LOL!

Lastly, Daniel I too didn't get what the heck Sayid was talking about triangulating the signal, just the fact that he was onscreen, I was satisfied, he can triangulate my signal anyday, whoops TMI!

It makes you wonder what the future holds for Locke. Will he stay on the island or will he go home? And if he goes home, is he able to be the man he was on the island? I think he'd rather die than go home. But if the producers are reading this, don't you kill him off!

That knife throwing was awesome. It ranks right up there with Sayid snapping that guy's neck with his legs.

Walkabout was the BEST!! I love Locke my stomach hurt watching Randy be a dick and poor Locke looking for love in all the wrong places like with the phone sex opperator.

Thanks Daniel, for the "keep it nice" note. I was flogged by Rich last time and didn't really want to post anymore. I respect people's opinions greatly, but there is a better way to say you don't agree with something. Besides, my Henry Gale/Wizard of Oz reference wasn't a "theory" it was just a fun fact I was pointing out. Get a grip.

OH and I needed to clarify something for robin and the other lady who corrected me on Henry Gale not being the Wizard in Dorothy's dream... You are correct, they did it that way in the movie, but what I said was "in the original version" they played it where Uncle Henry was also the Wizard. I'm playing the Scarecrow now in a production here in LA and that's how it was scripted. Just a tidbit. I hope everyone was not too bored by it :-)

As far as episodes I'm most looking forward to seeing again: the one where Boone dies. Not because I didn't like Boone, I actually really liked him, I think that's why that episode was so great to me, I didn't want to see him go, and wasn't sure they would actually kill him. And seeing Jack struggle with trying to save him, then trying to decide weather or not to chop off his leg! good lord! That was good TV, and SO telling about Jack. I haven't seen it since the first time, so I'm hoping it holds up as well. As much as I loved this "Walkabout" episode...the boone one (until I see it again perhaps) is my all time favorite Lost episode.

Hi Maria,

Thanks for providing the CNN link - I hadn't heard about these mobisodes and am intrigued to see how much information will be revealed in them.

Also, thanks to Daniel for a great recap. Without a doubt Walkabout is one of (if not THE) best episodes in the three seasons of lost.... yet. But I really have a feeling, as I'm sure others on this blog do, that the best is yet to come. Cuse and Lindelof won't let us down.

Have a great day,
Rich

I've done The Wizard of Oz play several times both as an actress and director. Uncle Henry becomes the guard in Oz, and professor Marvel becomes The Wizard. Seems your director chose to do it differently. Interesting choice!

i agree with Rich. while this is a great episode, i believe the greatest is yet to come. Locke isnt my favorite character anyways; Hugo is the best.

Thanks, Sarah. I can't believe someone publicly stated they agree with me. ;-)

Yeah, wouldn't it be great if in 2010 we all said.... "Do you remember back in 2007 how naive we were to think how great the 1st three Lost seasons were? They were nothing compared to seasons 4, 5 and 6, when the show really got good!"

Somehow, I don't think that's all too unrealistic. [At least I hope not.]

Rich

Hey Daniel & Losties,
I have a question: I thought I saw on this site not too long ago that Locke proposed to a woman named Helen...and Helen was his phone "friend" in this episode...is something going on here, or am I in another world and thinking of something else?

This episode was the best. And I totally agree that Locke does not want to get off the island because it IS his destiny...he's always wanted to do the "safari" thing, and now that he can walk, he's in Heaven! Locke's character is about 30 years older than me (if not more), but when he's on the screen, I'm in Heaven too!

I can't remember exactly but for some reason I keep thinking that Locke just called the woman on the phone "Helen". I mean this is after the Helen he was involved with ended the relationship. I could be totally wrong here tho' - anyone else know for sure?

Whitney,

You are correct. However, the Helen that Locke referenced last night is different from the Helen you'll meet later in Season 1. Be patient, you'll get there.

Rich

(PS - This is a revised and "niced up" version of what I originally and really wanted to say.... see Daniel, I'm getting better!!!)

Info on Helen on the phone in "Walkabout":
http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Helen_%28phone_operator%29

Info on Helen, who was Locke's girlfriend before the plane crash and who he intended to marry:
http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Helen

Best,
Rich

Whitney & Carly:

This flash back takes place after his failed relationship with Helen. Considering that he's talking to a phone sex gal, it seems probable that he "asked" if he can call her Helen. Filled with regret, lonliness, and he's paying for it, he figures he can call her whatever. Hope it helps.

I'm sure the next three seasons are going to ROCK!

Thanks for the info Rich. I was confused about the Helen issue too. Now I totally remember the character that played Lockes' "girlfriend" Helen. It was such a different role for Sagal. This is going to be one of the best things about watching these episodes all over again. The second time around can be so eye opening.

I am pretty sure that Locke just had the phone sex operator answer to Helen. He was at a pretty low point after she left him and it was just his way of feeling like she was still there.
Anyways, great episode.

I just wanted to send a hug Rich's way.

I'm very proud of your "niced up" response to Whitney! :)

Way to go, man, way to go! :)

C

I just read that Julie Bowen's contract with Boston Legal was not picked up - so maybe we will be seeing a few more fbacks/fforwards with Sarah involved.

Thanks, Blah21...that makes better sense. I can see how Locke would want to further his "fantasy" by referring to the phone sex woman as Helen. Poor guy

I have missed ONE episode of Lost in all three seasons, the one with Sayid and the bomb plot. THAT is the one I need to see, and can't wait until Daniel gets to that ep!

Daniel, great recap as always...loved the fourthly comment, it made me LOL.

Can't wait to see what Dad thinks about "Walkabout" since it's a favorite among many of us.

And I too was thinking that Locke probably chose to call the phone operator Helen, out familiarity...but man does your heart break at that scene.

I know it's only a tv show and we have to let some things slide, but the one thing that kinda irked me about Locke being paralyzed and then getting the use of his legs after four years...his legs would be severely atrophed from not being used. I mean the only logical explantation would be that he was doing physical therapy to get himself ready for the walkabout that he wanted to do in Australia, but do you think he would be able to just walk and trek through the jungle 4 days after getting use of his legs again after some physical therapy? It's probably something I should just overlook, I hope I don't get burned for pointing that out (I do love Locke) but when I watched it again, that was my reaction when he stood up.

Thank you blah21 for the answer, even though it was Tracy that asked the question. (glad to know I am remembered anyway) =>
So knowing what we do now, what do you guys think is up with Jack seeing his dad? Is it just the island playing with Jack's brain like when Locke "saw" Walt on the season finale? and if so why? Or is his dad really walking around an island with a suit and tennis shoes?
And Daniel, I was thinking the same thing at 00:30 when Locke sees "something" and we don't. I wonder if they will show us another angle of what he saw in a future episode.
Hi Tracy, Janice, Tristen and Susan!

....oh, and Hi Kerin!

Thanks for mentioning that Carly because I felt like I was obsessing on Jacks dad a few months ago. The next episode "the white rabbit" has Jack chasing his dad even more. Jack slowly takes on his identity as a leader over this episode and the next one and I am starting to this it's just his psychie causing him delusions and making his dad "appear" as he works out his own insecurities as a leader of men.

Hi Kerin - I think that was part of the miracle of Locke's healing - after all, if the island was going to heal the original injury, it could easily restore the muscle tone, as well.

Daniel - I forgot to mention in my earlier post that this was an excellent recap!

Just wanted to say that I was on a long bus ride and they played the movie the fugitive (random I know) but Rose from Lost was one of the detectives working with Tommy Lee Jones! I got pretty excited... she def is an underrated character on Lost
keep up the good work daniel

Howdy Daniel and Losties!

Well- I know a lot of people are extremely fond of this episode and it is one of my favorites- it is not the top of the list for me. I'd say top 3. Though it did reveal one of the biggest shockers in Lost History. I remember thinking when I first watched it that Locke must be some sort of "god" walking among them...I thought he was a bad-a$$ too- to put up with all that he did- with his Dad, his Mom, His jobs, his obsessions- he had to be strong. Of course after watching Season 2 and 3 I have a totally different opinion of him. (I'll leave that out...)

Okay- so I think I'll ask this- do you think Jack chasing after his "father" and then seeing Locke have any connection? Or did Locke just mysteriously show up where Jack was looking? Like last week when Micheal told Walt he would look for Vincent as soon as the rain stopped and then it suddenly stopped?

Read the articles and thanks to everyone who posted links- hope that Damon and Carlton mean what they say and don't end the show like Soprano's with the viewers having to answer their own questions....

Have a nice Day!
Amber

Kerin: Thanks for the response on my blog. I thought it was a long shot that you would find it....I'm happy we can chat there!!!

Hi to my peeps Carly, Janice, Janelle, Tracy, Susan, Tristan, Nan (your my Yoda) and EVERYBODY else. You guys should really visit Jay's site. It has excellent info and facts.

The theme of good/bad/light/dark is very pervasive in this show, and it pertains to the island itself.

Carly, you mentioned what is up with Jack seeing his dad, and what Locke saw in Season 1. Do you recall Mr. Eko's brother appearing, and then killing him? How about Hurley's imaginary friend who tries to get him to jump off the cliff? I believe all three of these manifestations to be connected to the smoke monster/the dark side the island.

Locke described what he saw as a bright light, something beautiful. The smoke monster also is afraid of Locke, as we saw in the episode where Eko dies (it backs away from him twice).

So, it stands to reason that the island has 2 distinct and polar opposite personalities.

Hey Carly and everyone. Kerin I have to agree with Nan, the island healed Locke completely, muscle tone and all. You are right though, I still don't have much muscle back on my leg I broke, and I was bed fast only about 4 or 5 months. It's amazing how much I lost in that short time. I'm still weak in fact in that leg.

You don't use it you lose it.

PS. Ana, come back and play. :) Miss you.

Ana!! You're here! yay!! The blog wouldn't be the same without you girl!

Hi to all - Thanks for the feedback on the leg thing...I guess I have to accept some minor things like that, it's kinda like the tarps :)

tlatzoteotl makes a good point about ol' smokie having two sides.

It would be great if they showed us the other view, when Locke is looking at it...but then would we have to wait for the flashback on the Smoke Monster?

tlatzoteotl just made me think of something ... we have seen the black smoke, but is the thing that Locke saw, and that took "pictures" or whatever of Kate and Juliet something different? Like a dark power and a light power (jing and jang)? And do both of them have the power to become something else -- Eko's brother, Jack's dad, Kate's horse, Dave from the hospital. Didn't Jack's dad lead them to the caves with fresh water? Its like sometimes, the "thing" it becomes is good, and sometimes, it is evil

And Ana, thanks for the shoutout, and everybody else, thanks for the civility this time around :)

I too love this episode, I have watched it several times and I still cry when they leave him in the travel agency screaming, breaks my heart. I am really dying to know the story between him being pushed out the window by "dad" and this episode. I hate that boss, I don't want to spoil it for the new folks, but he has a connection with Hurley as well-make note.

One thing about the Kate vegetarian thing. She wasn't a vegetarian when she was eating up all that man's steak (or was it bacon?) in Australia. I have always wondered what she mean by saying that, since she obviously ISN't a vegetarian, what do you guys think?

All I know is that I can't wait to find out. The smoke monster is definitely connected to the bad side, but it certainly seems reasonable that that both sides project themselves as people sometimes. I forgot that Jack's "dad" led them to the caves, and the good side might also be behind the visions of Walt. I prefer to think that Walt himself is making those projections, though. He's an amazing psychic, and I pray pray pray he'll become a regular character again, even if he hasn't stayed a little boy.

tlatzoteotl, is the nick Mayan or Inca connected? Just curious. :)

tlatzoteotl said: Hurley's imaginary friend who tries to get him to jump off the cliff? I dident think I had missed any shows but I dont remember that at all. Anyone remember when that happened so I can go watch it??

Interesting comment tlatzoteotl, Janelle and Kerin. I never thought it was the smoke monster's manifestation of Mr. Eko's brother that killed him. I just thought it was the smoke monster itself. Light and Dark. The next epi about the people in the cave touches on that too. So how do the Others fit in to this? Didn't Juliet tell Kate that they didn't know what the Smoke
monster was, just that they could block it with that force field thing.
By the way...Ana, glad to see you here today.

Kerin - The extent that Locke was healed really isn't a minor thing, though. It is frickin' amazing! Not only was Locke healed, the island transformed him into a near-god-like being. I would bet that even before the injury, pre-island Locke could not have physically done half of the things that he did in the first three episodes. I am really glad that you brought this up, because I was so stunned by the reveal of this episode when I first saw it that I never got around to thinking about the magnitude of the change in Locke. But he has been reminded by the island that it is in it's power to make Locke a mere mortal again, if he should ever leave the island or make it angry. Twice now, Locke has been reduced to his pre-island state - once in when he was with Boone, and then again in the pit. Both times, the island restored Locke to his "Superman" status.

Oops. I meant to hit preview, and instead posted. I meant to follow up that Locke was now on notice that he had to protect the island. Not just live on it, but live for it.

Now, we saw another miracle healing in Rose. I wonder if the island has a purpose for her, as well, or if her miracle was just a "normal" healing.

Now I am done. :)

Hey all! I do have to say this was one of my favorite episodes also. I felt so bad for Locke. (now, knowing more of the story, I felt even worse this time) I think it really is his magical Island, and he will do anything to keep himself there and to protect it. I think somehow he and Walt will be further connected in Season 4. It all comes back to how all these people with some sort of relation to each other ended up here together. (i'm trying not to get too into last seasons reveals for the newbies :)

NAN: I have a theory that Adam and Eve (the cave dwellers) are Rose and Locke--the two people that CAN NOT leave the island.

Hi Kelly.

Hey Ana!! I was on last Friday, but think everyone had stopped reading by the time I posted. I've been in cake hell. (Tis the season) I finally had some time today to catch up! I miss our regular Thursday chats, although new episodes are much more exciting to review!

Nan- You're right, Locke healing is an amazing thing, the minor thing I was referring to was my thought about his legs being atrophed from being paralyzed for 4 years...b/c if you think about it critically, then in 4 days why didn't Jack's face scrapes heal? Or why didn't the Marshal heal a little quicker? And you could go on and on...so with my atrophy thought, I'm thinking too critically, which I should shrug off as minor thing, but again, I'm with you, the overall use of his legs is quite extraordinary and major...love your posts BTW

Kerin...you're actually right. some people do tend to heal extremely fast on the Island. Some....not all. I think that's part of the secret of the Island.

Laura

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_%28Lost%29

Info on that episode. but at the end, if I remember correctly, "Dave" does try to convince Hurley that he is still in the hospital, not on an Island, and that if he jumps, he will wake up.

So, with all of these people who are supposed to be dead keep showing up -- is the black/white smoke like "The First" on Buffy -- it can only show up as dead people (or in Dave's case, one that doesn't exist?)

Janelle!! Buffy!! Oh how I miss that show. :( Angel too! My favorite Buffy show is "Once More With Feeling". I could watch it over and over. I'm such a nerd. haha

Laura: The epi that shows Hurley trying to jump off a cliff is titled "Dave" in the 2nd season. It's when he first kisses Libby, aaawwww!

Carly: Thanks for posting on my site. So glad you found me!!

Well Ana I would like to find you too haha.

Susan

My favorite Buffy ep is Smashed, in season 6, where they lose their memories, then Buffy and Spike get all down and dirty in the house that falls down around them. HOT, plus UPN got in a little hot water from some TV watchdog groups that thought they hinted a bit to much that there was penetration going on.

That, and Angel, are shows that I still have on tape and will watch when there is nothing else on. One day, i will go buy the DVDs

I just want to add that I am having the worlds most boring month at work, am taking tomorrow off, and turn 3t on saturday, and can't wait to see what everyone has to say on Monday!

Happy 30th on Saturday. :) Oh yeah I remember that episode. I love Spike. He was the ultimate misunderstood bad boy, wasn't he.

oh, mixed up eps, those were two different ones, but love them both!

Okay, so if Dave wasn't real then how did he leave a slipper???? Remember Hurley had Dave's slipper? I remember thinking "how did he leave a slipper if he is just an imaginary friend"??? Am I loosing my mind?

Happy Bday Janelle, jungle-love wishes your way and a drag on the ====~~ for luck...
Susan, all I can say is you shuld really visit Jay's site, you'll find interesting stuff there...

Ah, the power of the island, Teresa, the power of the island.

Good night and see ya'all on Monday!

I have nothing substatial to add today[insert attack here] so I think I'll sit back and observe today...Have fun guys. To my friends that "found me", please come again soon.

Janelle and Ana Thanks for the info I am sure I saw that but I must of missed some and forgot to rewatch TIVO. I will go and watch it now.

Janelle - happy b-day, I just turned 30 too, welcome to the club!!

Okay, one last thing, Janelle and Kerin I'll join the club in November!!

OK, now, I'll make like a perve, and just watch...

Remember NAN, you're my Yoda.

Ok, thought this was too cute had to share. I saw Walkabout this morning with my 4 year old, I'm a SAHM and she likes LOST too. Anyways, about 20 minutes ago she had moved off her spot from the sofa to put something on the coffee table and her 7 year old brother sat in her spot, he told her "you can't sit here" (my kids are usually softspoken, rarely do they yell) my daughter's response to her brother was "Don't tell me what I can't do!" I had to hold back my laugh as I corrected them, lol. Also for mekjek: I think Kate said she was a vegeterian because she didn't want to say why she was really going (triangulate the signal). I too thought of her whoofing down the eggs and bacon(I think) at that farm.

Hi Kelly! Cake..mmmm.
Happy Birthday Janelle!

Nan, good comments. It's like he gets his strength from the island like Superman does from the sun.
If the writers said don't confuse coincidence with fate, then some people were supposed to go the island, and others are just along for the ride. So who is who????
Talk to you guys later!

Ana wrote: "Remember NAN, you're my Yoda."

Geez, I thought we were playing nice, and suddenly I am insulted by Ana - so you think I am short, old, wrinkled and have big ears???? I think I should set the record straight - I DO NOT HAVE BIG EARS! ;-)

Oh Nan!! Did I really insult you?! *gasp* I hope you're being cheeky...If not, I'll rephrase: Nan, you're words have a Yoda-like inspiration...Is that better?!?!?

Ana - No worries - I am a very cheeky Yoda-like creature tonight! I am not short or green, either, though I seem to be shrinking as I get older. Alas, the rest of the description (old and wrinkled) only fits too well. And I don't have much fashion sense. Sigh. You actually inspired me to add a photo to my Myspace page - which I only started to help Daniel meet his goal of beating some guy named Brody. So this is sort of Lost-related.

Phew! Relieved I am.... :)

"The past is still, for us, a place that is not safely settled." So says Michael Ondaatje, author of "The English Patient" and the recently released "Divisadero," although it could easily have been said about this week's episode of "Lost." I attended a lecture he gave last night in San Francisco, interrupted by a picture message of a chili tamale at Pink's in LA, which is why I wound up watching "Walkabout" a day late.

This is Daniel's dad again, the "Lost" virgin catching up on the series from the beginning. "Walkabout" is an excellent episode; I love the flashbacks and all the foreshadowing. Although I am pretty sure the creators were not exactly sure where they were going with the story, that seems to have worked for them because they aren't rushing anything. The interior story moves at a pretty good clip, but the overall rhythm is really set by the ocean waves breaking on the beach. This helps the moments of shock and awe to stand out even more.

Couldn't help thinking about the 1971 Nicholas Roeg film "Walkabout." It's the story of a girl and her younger brother who get lost in the Australian interior. They are helped by a young aborigine with remarkable survival skills. Watching Michael and Kate ramble through the jungle with Locke at the lead made me think of that film.

I think I have to give up trying to figure out what's going on, or what the metaphor of the show is. Last week, I figured everyone was dead. This week, it seemed like they were all part of Jung's collective unconscious. Maybe taking it for what it is is the ticket.

Now to answer last week's big question: I was not in a rock band, but was in the music business. I handled public relations for artists like Chicago, Seals & Crofts, and James Taylor. Later I produced a couple hundred network radio specials, interviewing artists like the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, and Neil Young. But enough ancient history.

Great comments, everyone. Great run-down, Daniel. See you next week.

My first impression of Locke was that he reminded me of Col. Kurtz -- his nearly shaved head, odd facial expressions, and on the verge of madness personality. When I re-watched this episode I caught on to the reference when Jack asks Kate why she always has to sign up for marches out into "The heart of darkness".

When you remember that the "Kurtz" of Apocalypse Now was to be found and killed because he had "gone native", Locke too, has gone native (and ever more so). I don't think it is a coincidence, that in the narrative of Lost, this element was borrowed. Whether it is obviously alluded to in seasons 4-5-6, I guess we'll have to find out.

Remember too, that by the end of Apocalypse Now, we can't be sure whether Kurtz's (Locke) approach is better than Cpt. Willard (Jack). Kurtz being earthy and Willard analytical. Can anyone picture the opening scene Willard as the same character as Season 3 ending Jack (sorry Allen)? A.N could have began and ended with the Willard Scene. Lost could have done the same with Jack.

Maybe someone else could make sense of this?

Hey George,
Caught your post from the other day. I'm a little slow this week reading the lost diary on Friday!! It's been busy here at work. Thanks for clarify for me on that. You learn something new every day. I liked your interesting tidbit. I enjoy reading peoples thoughts. I don't catch things like that, so it's great that some peoples minds think so differently!!

Hey George,
Thanks for clarifying that for me. I enjoyed your interesting tidbit. My mind doesn't catch those kinds of things so it's great that other people's minds work so differently. Makes the blog so interesting. Keep up the good work all your sharp minded people!! Rereading my entry in case of any typos. Wouldn't want to reprimanded for such a heinous crime. LOL.

Just wanted to say Hi to all the girls, Ana, Carly, Janelle (happy birthday), Kerin and everyone else!! I missed alot yesterday, so today I will try to play catch up!
Have a great day!

Has anyone already brought up the idea what everyone on this show has a daddy issue?

Kate killed her dad, Jack hated his dad the which was Claire's dad too, Locke hated his dad which turned out to be Sawyer's reason for doing anything, Kwon is ashamed of his fisherman dad..Mrs Kwon has a kingpin for a dad, Hurley had an absent father, Desmond couldn't get Penny's father's approval, Ben hated his father....

I bet the dads are the ones funding Darma...esp. Penny's, Mrs. Kwon, maybe Jack's dad at one time and maybe Hurley's money is caught up in it too.

Hi Maria,
Yes, we've been discussing the Daddy issues in several of Daniel's blog entries already. I suggest going back and rereading them - very insightful.
Rich

Hi all! Just wanted to say a quick hello. I have been crazed this week, at work and home, and I haven't even had a chance to watch the episode. :-(

I did read the recap and the comments though, and even though I don't feel like I can really contribute this week, I just wanted to say hi. It was a pleasure to read everyone's comments. Have a GREAT weekend! See you Monday!

widsl

Hey widsl, great to see you. Hope you have a relaxing weekend.

Great diary Daniel. Not only is Walkabout still the best episode of Lost, I'm willing to bet it will go down as one of the iconic moments in all of television.

How many other scenes in Lost are better than when we realize Locke used to be in a wheelchair for the first time and he stares at it sitting near the fire?

Jack recognizing Desmond? The numbers being seen on the Hatch? "We're gonna have to take the boy?" Shannon translating Danielle's message? All good - but I think Locke screaming about his destiny eclipses them all.

Perhaps the ending of the show will become its defining moment (I hope it will be that good). But right now, I'd say it's the walkabout.

I think I have a crush on you. lol.

Hi. Um... so, this is in no way related to Walkabout, except in that Matthew Fox is in it...

I just watched Smokin' Aces for the first time... I sort of wanted Nestor Carbonell and Matthew "I have a mullet to disguise me for this role" Fox to make out when their faces were real close. Even though Nestor "Richard Alpert" Carbonell had that hideous moustache.

Yeah. I want more Richard Alpert. NOW. Dammit... stupid February season start date...

"Walkabout" rules. Totally stands the test of time.

ALI: Just wanted to let you know that Nestor will be on CANE this fall on CBS. He's gonna be a bad boy in this one, so that should at least feed your Richard hunger until February.

Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssss. I am ALL about CBS this Fall.

Thanks, Janice (formerly Belle)!

I think the best part of this episode, hands down, is when the plane is burning and Locke just watches his wheelchair. Just to imagine what he must be feeling, especially seeing later episodes involving him trying to function after the accident. It was such a good scene.

The researchers analyzed a woman, 48 years of age, who was suffering from akinetic mutism, which left her with an inability to speak or walk. It was found that 20 minutes after the patient was given zolpidem, an insomnia drug, she was able to talk, move and even eat on her own.
