L.D.Q.A. -- 7/23
Since all of the questions I got were about the Emmys, I am just going to talk about them this week. This is a site about "Lost," but the show doesn't exist in a vacuum -- I venture to say we all watch PLENTY of different shows.
So let's break it down, category by category, shall we?
Drama Series: "Boston Legal," ABC; "Grey's Anatomy," ABC; "Heroes," NBC; "House," Fox; "The Sopranos," HBO.
I watch "Heroes" (like it, but it's overrated). I watch "The Sopranos" (like it, but it's REALLY overrated). I don't watch the others. My favorite shows -- "The Wire," "The Shield," "Dexter," "Lost" and "Deadwood" -- aren't on the list. The fact that none of these five shows can even get nominated is the #1 reason I will not be watching the Emmys (I say that now, but I always get sucked in).
These nominees I get (though I am yet to find a single person that actually watches "Two and a Half Men"). My personal favorite, "Scrubs," did not make the cut and I am not the least bit surprised. "Ugly Betty" deserves to be on this list and "30 Rock" is amazing, but no one can beat "The Office." By the way, just because "Entourage" is on, doesn't mean it's funny. That show is slipping, big time.
Lead Actor in a Drama Series: James Spader, "Boston Legal," ABC; Hugh Laurie, "House," Fox; Denis Leary, "Rescue Me," FX; James Gandolfini, "The Sopranos," HBO; Kiefer Sutherland, "24," Fox.
Did anyone watch "24" this year? It was terrible. James Gandolfini is a shoe-in -- the rest of them shouldn't even show up. If Michael C. Hall ("Dexter") isn't on the list, the category is null and void. No one on TV is better right now.
Lead Actor in a Comedy Series: Ricky Gervais, "Extras," HBO; Tony Shalhoub, "Monk," USA; Steve Carell, "The Office," NBC; Alec Baldwin, "30 Rock," NBC; Charlie Sheen, "Two and a Half Men," CBS.
If Alec Baldwin doesn't win, no one should ever take the Emmys serious ever again.
Supporting Actor in a Drama Series: William Shatner, "Boston Legal," ABC; T.R. Knight, "Grey's Anatomy," ABC; Masi Oka, "Heroes," NBC; Michael Emerson, "Lost," ABC; Terry O'Quinn, "Lost," ABC; Michael Imperioli, "The Sopranos," HBO.
Alright, here we go. First off, if Shatner wins I am going on a rampage, period. If T.R. or Masi wins, rampage. If Michael Imperioli wins, I turn off the TV and begin drinking immediately. If Terry O'Quinn wins, I jump up and down and applaud. But...
It's all about Michael Emerson. Henry Gale, Ben, Benry ... whatever you want to call him, he is without question the best character on TV right now. Now, pound for pound, I'll take Michael C. Hall on "Dexter" -- he carries that show. But every time Michael Emerson comes on camera, it's an event. He delivers 10 times out of 10 and who else can you say that about?
Emmy voters: give Emerson the trophy and all (ok, maybe not ALL) is forgiven.
Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series: Kevin Dillon, "Entourage," HBO; Jeremy Piven, "Entourage," HBO; Neil Patrick Harris, "How I Met Your Mother," CBS; Rainn Wilson, "The Office," NBC; Jon Cryer, "Two and a Half Men," CBS.
No, no, no, no and no. Note to Emmy voters: Zach Braff is not the only person on "Scrubs". John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox) and Donald Faison (Turk) should each have won an Emmy by now. God, this makes me so angry.
Lead Actress in a Drama Series: Sally Field, "Brothers & Sisters," ABC; Kyra Sedgwick, "The Closer," TNT; Mariska Hargitay, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," NBC; Patricia Arquette, "Medium," NBC; Minnie Driver, "The Riches," FX; Edie Falco, "The Sopranos," HBO.
"The Sopranos" love fest continues. Stay home, Minnie -- it's all Edie this year. I would have LOVED for Kristen Bell to get nominated, but that was just a pipe dream.
Lead Actress in a Comedy Series: Felicity Huffman, "Desperate Housewives," ABC; Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "The New Adventures of Old Christine," CBS; Tina Fey, "30 Rock," NBC; America Ferrera, "Ugly Betty," ABC; Mary-Louise Parker, "Weeds," Showtime.
Definitely America Ferrera's to lose, but this might be the most even category of the year. I wouldn't complain if anyone won. Wow, I am actually not homicidal over an Emmy category. Sweet.
Supporting Actress in a Drama Series: Rachel Griffiths, "Brothers & Sisters," ABC; Katherine Heigl, "Grey's Anatomy," ABC; Chandra Wilson, "Grey's Anatomy," ABC; Sandra Oh, "Grey's Anatomy," ABC; Aida Turturro, "The Sopranos," HBO; Lorraine Bracco, "The Sopranos," HBO.
Dear lord what an atrocious list. No C.C.H. Pounder, no Connie Britton and Elizabeth Mitchell. When someone says "And the nominees for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series are ..." that's my cue to go to the bathroom ... even if I don't have to.
Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series: Jaime Pressly, "My Name Is Earl," NBC; Jenna Fischer, "The Office," NBC; Holland Taylor, "Two and a Half Men," CBS; Conchata Ferrell, "Two and a Half Men," CBS; Vanessa Williams, "Ugly Betty," ABC; Elizabeth Perkins, "Weeds," Showtime.
"My Name Is Earl" isn't really that funny any more -- it's just cute. Jenna Fischer, Vanessa Williams and Elizabeth Perkins might be the three best women working in television. Very strong category and I don't know who to pull for. If I had to pick one... I'll take Vanessa Williams.
Original Music and Lyrics: "Family Guy: Peter's Two Dads," Song Title: "My Drunken Irish Dad," Fox; "MADtv: Episode 1209," Song Title: "Merry Ex-Mas," Fox; "Saturday Night Live Host: Justin Timberlake," Song Title: "D--- in a Box," NBC; "Scrubs: My Musical," Song Title: "Everything Comes Down to Poo," NBC; "Scrubs: My Musical," Song Title: "Guy Love," NBC.
Every single holiday a dick in a box...

HILARIOUS COMMENTS!
My husband doesn't like award shows... but this years Emmy nominations perked his ears! He'll be rooting for Ari, Benry and Justin!

You are too funny, Daniel. I'd rather watch a closed-circuit feed of YOU and your friends watching the Emmys than the snooze-worthy broadcast itself--just to see a Daniel rampage or two!
I'm stuck with just a few over-the-air channels here on my little island--cable doesn't come here, and I've been holding out on throwing down for the satellite--so I haven't seen many of the performances you are talking about. But after seven years of slim TV pickings, I'm about to cave and dial up DISH...in part so I will know what all the fuss is about, and so I don't get roped into watching some of the most egregious network schlock when I'm tired and just want to rot a few brain cells in front of the boob tube. Plus, I miss Jon Stewart. I used to be able to snatch him off a Canadian network over the air, when I lived closer to the border.
As for Michael Emerson v. Terry O'Quinn, I would have bet the family farm that you were rooting for Michael!
And can I just state for the record, even though I've rarely seen the Sopranos (again, used to get it over the air from Canada), I AM SO SICK OF ALL THE HYPE, not to mention the endless glorification of Mafia violence in TV shows and movies. Enough already!!!

I am with you Daniel with "Dick in a Box" That was probably the most hilarious Digital Short on SNL! Makes me laugh every time!
I sure hope one of our Lost guys wins! Either one would make me happy.

Baldwin won't win, Daniel. The voters may be thrilled to award people who PLAY thugs on TV, but I predict that they won't put out for a real life version - at least, not when the target was a child, and the attack is so fresh in everyone's mind. I'm not trying to start a Baldwin vs. Basinger debate here - I don't know the full backstory, and don't really care. I just think it is going to take a while before some people can get past his tirade - and I think it will have cost him enough votes that he won't get the award.

Again, all I could think when I read the nominees was ... really? These were the best performances of the season? Yeah, I am probably not going to watch the Emmys this year. (just red carpet for the clothes) It's not new news that just about every critic thinks it is a bunch of hooey, that the categories have nothing to do with what is on television now. When is the last time a real miniseries was on network tv? Variety or comedy show? You typically have Jon Stewart competing with a one-night-only comedy special?
They FINALLY added a reality TV category a couple of years ago, but they really need to revamp all of the categories, to reflect what is on TV, and make categories actually match who is nominated in those categories.
How fracked is that.
Oh, which reminds me, Battlestar Galactica, of which I am a recent band wagon jumper (just watched season 1 on DVD) deserves some of those best actor and actress nominations. So do a TON of other shows (Kristen Bell, Momma Gillmore).
I watched Grey's the first season, some of the second, but it is ridiculous, so many of those people being nominated. TR Knight? hey, he is a Minnesota boy and therefore he has my support, but THAT was better than other performances? What kind of crack are you smoking in LA?
But my best supporting actor still goes to O'Quinn. Benry was nominated before, let someone else get some spotlight.

I couldn't stop laughing when I heard that "D--k" was nominated! I thought it was a joke. It's the funniest thing I've seen on TV, let alone SNL in a long time. (It was even re-run this past Sat.) Whenever JT is on SNL, it's funny. Esp. "The Barry Gibb Talk Show". I've got clips of both on my MySpace page.
I think that if Michael or Terry win, one, our dedication to "Lost" will be validated, and two, it would be hilarious to see Daniel's reaction. Could you video it for us and post it somewhere, Daniel?
Happy day, everyone!

One thought: How are they going to show a clip of the D*** in a Box song, or even read the nomination, on the show? This is going to make for the best moment of the broadcast. Too bad it's not the Oscars, where they have to PERFORM all the nominated songs. Wouldn't you just love to see JT and Andy do the number LIVE in front of all their overdressed and overcoiffed peers?
Now there's a Christmas present!

Hahaha! Yep Vermonter, that would be hilarious at the Oscars. That video is embarrassingly funny.

hello to my PEEPS! I've missed you guys!!
I'm so with Janelle in her Emmy assessment. Emmy-shmemy....I watched season 1 of Greys Anatomy too, and it was slightly entertaining but NOT AWARD WORTHY....The fact that so many good shows and actors have not even won in recent years solidifies its worthless unimportance. The real prize lies in a shows loyal viewership, of which LOST takes first prize.
I'm pretty sure the actors themselves (like O'Quin and Emerson) know the Emmys is one giant fluff party and should not to be taken as any real measurement of talent
.....blah, blah, blah, just my 2 cents!!
And, yes I second the motion.... I WANNA SEE A LIVE FEED OF DANIEL & CO. WATCHING THE EMMY-SHMEMYS INSTEAD!!!

I agree that Alec Baldwin should win, but it's worth noting that he's not really a lead actor on that show.

OK, I would watch the Emmys if we could all meet here during the broadcast and make all the snide comments we want to. Daniel, how about a LOST Diary recap of the Emmys as well so we can all vent the next morning?

I second Janelle's motion!

i totally agree with your comments. many shows and actors were left off of the nominees list, "Lost" being one of many. i also must second your wish to see Veronica Mars get some credit for their work. sure, season three was rough, but overall it was great.

Daniel sometimes I read your posst and think "did i write that?" Know you are not alone in wondering how on earth Jodn C and Donald don't have nominations and awards every year....unreal....and i too say Michael Emerson

Elizabeth Mitchell's snub makes me sick to my stomach. "Grey's Anatomy" is basically "ER" with prettier people and more sex.
I totally agree with your assessments on the Supporting Actor snubs for "Scrubs," although the past seasons was relatively weak.

I adore everything about The Office, sorry.
I especially LOVED the episode where they
ventured into the warehouse, and Dwight delivers the line "Remember on LOST when they met the Others?" and then smirks wickedly into the camera. Genius.
