L.D.Q.A. -- 7/30

It's question time ...

Q: Usually at award shows they show a clip of an actor's performance, but generally only for the Best Actor/Actress categories. If you had to pick one good clip for the Best Supporting Actor Performance in a Drama Series for Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn from this season, that would show the world just why one of them should win, which one would you choose? -- Carly

A: I'd have to pick the scene from "The Man From Tallahassee" when Henry Gale explains "the box" to Locke. Which gives me the opportunity to re-run this quote: "Picture a box. You know something about boxes, don't you, John? What if I told you that somewhere on this island there is a very large box, and whatever you imagined, whatever you wanted to be in it -- when you opened that box, there it would be. What would you say about that John?"

Q: I once mentioned that I enjoyed Lost because it came with homework.  I just finished watching 7 hours of "John from Cincinnati" and I really like the show but I'm trying my hardest to keep up with what John is saying or trying to say...it just makes my head spin.  What do you think of this new show so far? -- Janice

A: Other than the fact that John is Jesus (I think), I have no clue what is going on. I am of the opinion that John's speech at the end of the episode 2 weeks ago somehow "cured" everyone of what has plagued them. I didn't watch tonight's (7/29) ep yet, but Butchie and Cissy have already made progress. We shall see. But I do love it so far.

Q: Have you read the book "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? what's your opinion? -- Ana Maria

A: I haven't read any of the Harry Potter books and I am two movies behind thus far. They're ok -- doesn't really do much for me.

Q: Seeing as all the networks pretty much have revealed the new shows coming this fall- What show (or shows) has the most promise do you think? -- Amber

A: Well, I have several pilots in my possession, just haven't gotten around to them yet. I am hoping to watch them all in the next week or two and I will a report for you then. Honestly, nothing really has me overly excited -- I am still mourning "Studio 60."

Q: Which A-Team character would do best in the Island? -- Luis

A: The better question is, who is the better con man: Face or Sawyer? I'd say Sawyer, but I like Face better. All together now: I love it when a plan comes together.

Q: Do you watch any reality shows? If so, which ones? And if not, why not? -- George

A: Reality TV is a blight on society. I hate them all. Even the one show I kinda like, "Beauty and the Geek," I don't even have a season pass for and I don't even know who won. I like the written word. The fact that 10 times as many people watch glorified karaoke than the brilliance that was "Studio 60" (sorry, I am re-watching this season and it is just so damn good!) just makes me sick.

Q: How come Oscar Mayer and John Mayer spell their last names the same but pronounce them completely different? One of them must be wrong. Who is it? -- Jen

A: Oscar Mayer is wrong. If you're going to pronounce it like that, it should be Meyer.

Q: 1) Why are there no reruns of "Lost"? 2) Seen any good movies lately? 3) Do you have a girlfriend? -- Aly

A: I don't think "Lost" is the kind of show that does well in re-runs -- that's for "House" and "Law & Order." The last great movie I saw was "Sicko." I am a huge Michael Moore fan and I didn't like "Fahrenheit 9/11" at all, so it was good to see Moore get his groove back. It's a must-see. And yes, I have a girlfriend -- her name is Jennifer Love Hewitt. Heard of her?

Q: Ok, you're the judge of the LOST Island Wet T-Shirt Contest.  The contestants include Kate, Juliet, Sun, Claire, Danielle.  Who would come in first, second, and third and why? -- bc

A: Juliet, Kate, Sun -- and do I really need to explain why?

Q: Do you think Charlie is really dead? I think that since he gave his life for that of desmond’s and pretty much everyone else that the island is going to let him live. -- Elizabeth

A: Sigh...

Don't worry about watching the Harry Potter movies. They're only worth seeing after reading the books so you can complain about everything they left out and got wrong. I paid just $4 to see H.P. and the Order of the Phoenix this weekend, and I still feel ripped off. What a waste of time!

But anyway....I'll just say that I never cared to read Harry Potter until one of my favorite principals (I work in school administration) told me it was absolutely wonderful and I was missing out. There were probably 3 or 4 of the books already out at that point. I fell in love, to say the least. My sister-in-law and I pestered my husband about reading it for a couple years until he finally caved, and now he loves them too.

So, just try out the first book. It's a super quick read - I finished it in about 5 hours, I think. If you don't like it, then you can ignore the rest of the series.

I am going to concur with Lisa. I am not a huge fan of the movies, they don't do much for me at all, but the books are really well written. And for someone like you (a detail junkie), you would be in heaven.

Daniel,
Is there any way we can reverse the travesty of Studio 60's cancellation? Do we have any power? Any recourse? I'd participate in a hunger strike to get it back on the air.

I agree with you whole heartedly about Studio 60! Just watching those last few episodes really made me upset that they would cancel such brilliant writing and acting. It's been a long while since we had a show that dared to make a statement on society, religion, and politics all wrapped up in the crazy a Hollywood world. I just think the rest of the country couldn't relate to a show that was about the inner-workings of Hollywood, even though it was about so much more. And never have I seen a cast pull off such quippy dialouge! I'm sad to see it go. RIP

OH and one more thing, if the fans can revolt and bring back such crap as Jericho...we should be able to do something about Studio 60. Have you tried watching that crappy show?

The more I watch John from Cin the more I like it. It's got mystery, drama, and some great one-liners.

I think this show is someones interpretation of what the second coming would be like. Interesting.

Woohoo my question got posted! Sorry I have been away from the blog the last few weeks so I thought a good question was the best way to get back in the swing and it worked! I'm such a dork. :)
Anyway, I have boycotted NBC for not keeping Studio 60. I don't watch that much of the major network TV anymore and that was one of my few season passes left besides Lost and now it's gone. The writing on that show was superb. Stupid NBC.
I find John from Cincinnati kinda fascinating. Very different. Have to rewind a lot.
Jen your Mayer question had me laughing out loud. Too funny. See you all Thursday!

O.K., first of all, Lisa-where do you go to the movies for $4? I think my Diet Coke cost that much!!! I paid like 8 dollars for a ticket. Oh, well...I thought it was good but not great. The 'Harry Potter' books are so much better. I really think Daniel would like them. It's better entertainment than most T.V. on right now!

Daniel, you would really like Harry Potter...they hooked me from the first sentence and I've (this is sad) reread the whole series twice (before the last two books came out) twists, turns and attentiont to detail...you'd love it I think! Can't say much about Studio 60...came on too late for me....miss Lost like you wouldn't believe...actually miss my obsession with your review too for that matter!

Carmike's matinee showings are $4 - it's just for shows that are between 4:00 and 5:30.

My major problems with the newest H.P. movie (in no particular order):
1. No one ever watched them go in and out of the Room of Requirement, and it wasn't Cho who turned them in.
2. Why show Kreacher so prominently if his treachery wasn't going to explored?
3. Tonks should have been in the movie more (she's hot), and they should have mentioned the fact that she's Sirius' and Bellatrix's cousin.
4. What the hell was up with everybody (except the kids) turning into smoke during the so-called "duels"? So annoying. They should have put their effects to better use, like actually showing the duels the way they were described in the books. For example, the duel between Voldemort and Dumbledore in the Ministry of Magic sucked big time. The whole thing was anticlimactic to say the least.
5. There's so much that ties in with The Deathly Hallows that isn't addressed. I think the director who does the final movie is going to be hard pressed to tie in things like the mirror Sirius gave to Harry as a present, the objects that were thrown away and later stolen back by Kreacher, the portrait of Phineas Nigellus at Headquarters, the fact that Harry found the Room of Requirement because he was trying to find a room to hide stuff in....actually, that's going to be significant in the The Half Blood Prince movie with everything that goes on with Draco.

My biggest problem with the Order of the Pheonix -- including all of Lisa's comments -- were the dumbass teenagers behind me in the theatre and the dumbass in the front row who was obviously videotaping the movie from his seat.

I hate people today.

But Daniel, I was a firm Non-HP person for a long time, then decided to break down and read the books. I read the first three in like a day and a half. You get sucked in to characters that you care about. Read them!!

Oh, and the best A-Team member on the Lost island would be George Peppard's (I know i am not spelling that right) character. He would be the guy who made people into teams and made them scout the island FIRST!!!

And somewhere half way to 3/4 way through the final season he could say "I love it when a plan comes together."

Oh, one more. Come on my Lost girlfriends, which of the Lost men do we want to see in a wet t-shirt?

Jin, Sawyer and ... Sayid? I love me some Sawyer, but have you seen Daniel Dae Kim's pecs?

"SAWYER" - BABY!!!

Oh forget the wet t-shirt... I just want to see him all wet!

Oh heck, ever since when am I "anonymous"!!?

My HP ticket cost $11.25 *sigh* big cities blow

Lisa I totally agree with #2 & #5, but to the director's credit with no #7 to read, it would have been hard to tie in things that would be important later on...when the reader didn't know what those were yet.

Janelle, do you remember the episode in Season 2, almost at the end, where Desmond and his boat come back and Jack, Sayid, and Sawyer all swim out there to check it out and Sayid and Sawyer take off there shirts and they are standing on the boat, dripping wet with no shirts on and Jack has a sleeveless shirt on (he really should have just said to heck with it and taken his off too, but I digress..). Anyway, best scene ever, hands down, that is I mean, if scenes are rated on hotness alone....

You have a point, Lynne. However, it seems clear that they didn't consult Ms. Rowling on the script, and well...personally, if I had done the movie, I would have included those things just because they were obvious main plot points.

totally agree with you lisa. i still loved the movie because, from a purely entertaining standpoint, it really delivered. the movie was shorter than i thought it would be, so i was left feeling for a little more. they could have added an extra hour to slow things down and really concentrated on the details that really make book 6 and book 7. speaking of the deathly hallows, i just finished it last night (i wanted to pace myself. i read book 6 in 2 days and felt empty when i had nothing else to read). i was left bemused. the ending was way to saccharine for me. the King's Crossing chapter... terrible! i felt like i was watching that scene in The Matrix Reloaded when Neo meets the architect. the ending should have had all the loose ends coming together seamlessly, without a need of a whole chapter of explanations. boooo to the ending.

Carly

I have to rewatch Season 2 pretty fast here just for that scene. Sigh ...

I finished Deathly Hallows last week, but still have no one to discuss it with! I have been banned from speaking of it at work, the woman on the other side of my cubicle wall is still waiting to get it in the mail. I cried at who died at the end. I guess I'd rather she'd placed them at work at some point in the future, where they are doing something, not just passing the baton to the next generation. However, I do think the "passing the baton" could mean there are other Hogwart stories coming in the future, and is there any reason she couldn't do a prequel, like James and Lily's Hogwarts years?

Janelle-

That would be so cool if JK Rowling would write a prequel...she said she is writing a book about what happened to the characters after the end of the Deathly Hallows in a few interviews she's given after the release of the book. I always thought she could have threw in a few more details about Lily and James's time at Hogwarts.

As for the wet t-shirt contest-
Sayid
Sawyer
Jin
Paulo(hated his character on Lost but he looked HOT on Lost and in the movie 300!)

I think I'm most looking forward to the Bionic Woman and the show Life on NBC- hope neither are up against any of the other shows I watch regularly.

And great question about the John Mayer/Oscar Meyer pronunciation. I had to laugh at that! Wish I could think up clever questions...all well. Some of us were just born without a great funnybone...

Have a great day everyone!

Amber

Wet t-shirt contest, huh? Jin does have an awesome body. I'd go with him for first place. Then Sawyer, Jack, and Sayid.

OH! Don't get me started on 300! One of The Best Action movies out there. Although I heard somewhere that half those pecs were digitally enhanced.

WHATEVER! They look damn good!

ROFLMAO!!!! Totally Janice!

Janelle, I bought the book on that Saturday and finished it on Sunday and have been inwardly dying! My brother, (who fell off the HP wagon) read the spoilers online, so he is acting like he knows everything and my husband doesn't even read the series and is a slow reader, so it will be years before I feel like I will have a great HP discussion! So I am feeling you there! The movies were good in the aspect of seeing it visually and not having to use your imagination. The characters that died were very sad. I cried...a lot, but I am pregnant, so I figure hormones took over. Needless to say, it was an excellent finish, but would love for J.K. Rowling to write a prequel. Now that we know more about Lily's childhood from Snapes memories, I think it would interesting to see Harry's parents at Hogwarts. God bless J.K. Rowling for being an amazing writer!
