The Moth

Miss me? Yeah, me too.

A few notes before we start:

-- Sorry we didn't have the L.D.Q.A. this week, but there were only three questions. I should have posted the reminder post sooner, so that's my bad. But I'll be back in full force next Monday.

-- My summer TV viewing projects are going well. I am eight episodes into season three of "The Office." It certainly has its moments, but I can't anoint it legendary status like everyone else does. Michael and Dwight are funny, but it's the same joke over and over again. Jim, on the other hand, is comedy gold. Absolutely love the guy. It's a shame he chose "License to Wed" as his first movie choice. Ouch.

I am also about 10 episodes into season two of "Battlestar Galactica" and I am digging it. I am not head over heels or anything, but it's definitely getting better, so that's a good sign. On a bad note, I am now convinced Ari is a Cylon. The signs are totally there. First off, he talks a lot about destroying the human race. Secondly, he hates when I call machines "toasters." And third, there are like 10 copies of him around town. I can't believe I didn't pick up on this sooner.

Alright, let's roll:
Lost
00:00 -- I could look it up, but I am too lazy. Whoever did the makeup for this episode should have won an Emmy. Charlie looks like an absolute mess.

00:01 -- Jack's not mad at Kate for not coming to the caves with him and I think Kate would kind of prefer it if he was. I remember whenever I screwed up as a kid, my mom was never mad -- she was disappointed. And that was soooooooo much worse.

00:03 -- Charlie and I have had our differences, but if I had known him more during the days of his confession I think we might have gotten along better. "You all, everybody!" has a whole different meeting to me now.

00:04 -- If I root really, really hard will the boar catch and eat Charlie this time?

00:05 -- "Now give me my bloody drugs." -- Charlie. And the nominees for the least threatening line are ...

00:06 -- I don't remember this whole episode very well, but I do remember LOVING the whole "ask me for the drugs three times" thing. God I love Locke.

00:07 -- Sayid is giving his plan for finding the source of the French transmission. Who ya got: Sayid or MacGyver? I'll take my main Iraqi.

00:08 -- I am sure there are more interesting things I could say about this Sawyer/Kate thing, but here's what I got: What is that laptop Sawyer had? The battery came out of a handle!?!?
Lost
00:09 -- "You ok? You're looking a little ..." Jack to Charlie. Death, Jack. He's looking like grim death.

00:11 -- No foreshadowing in the scene between Charlie and his brother, was there? None at all.

00:12 -- Did you know Charlie was in a band called Driveshaft? Cause he never mentions it with no prompting whatsoever.

00:13 -- Charlie's incessant yelling caused a cave-in, trapping Jack inside. There are too many snarky things I could say here, I honestly can't pick one.

00:14 -- Another useless scene between Boone and Shannon. Not hard to see why they were killed off.

00:15 -- "Just keep doing whatever it is you do around here." Sawyer to Charlie. Yeah, that didn't go over too well.

00:16 -- What weighs more: Charlie or his guitar? Here's another one: Which song is better, "You All Everybody" or "That Thing You Do"? Underrated movie.

00:17 -- And finally Michael serves a purpose, other than being beaten up by Jin. Anything is better than hearing him yell about "my boy!!!"

00:19 -- Please sir, can I have my stash?

00:20 -- If Locke narrated more specials on The Discovery Channel, I'd watch more of The Discovery Channel.

00:22 -- "I can handle him." -- Kate about Sawyer. Yeah, we saw you handle him alright.

00:23 -- Charlie volunteers to go in the cave to save Jack. Nice to see him step up to the plate -- when certain death isn't involved.

00:24 -- One of the things I like about the early episodes was how big of an asshole Sawyer was. I guarantee he was never as nice off the island as he was the last few seasons.

00:25 -- In you go, Charlie.

00:26 -- Wait, you mean Charlie's brother turns into an asshole? Did not see that coming, even the second time around.

00:28 -- Charlie causes yet another cave-in. Man, he was doomed from the beginning, wasn't he?

00:30 -- Charlie keeps saying he can't help Jack pop his shoulder into place. All he has to do is pull him arm -- what is so damn hard about that?

00:33 -- Just a wrenching scene between Charlie and his brother. The guy gets him hooked on heroin and then gets clean, leaving his little bro still hooked. Oh, the irony of it all.
Lost
00:36 -- Speaking of irony, it turns out a moth is what helps save Jack and Charlie from the cave ... and Charlie from himself.

00:38 -- Let the island fireworks show begin.

00:39 -- And down goes Sayid!

00:40 -- Charlie is jonesing for some smack. Third time is the charm.

00:41 -- Jack totally blew his chance to nail Kate right there.

00:42 -- "I've made my choice." -- Charlie. Well it's good to see Charlie got rid of the last bit of heroin on the island. I mean, it's not as if there's a wrecked plane full of heroin anywhere around there. Oh wait...
Lost
It's amazing what used to pass for an episode of "Lost." I am not saying I didn't enjoy this episode, because I did. But when you look at all that is going on now, man these episodes pale by comparison just in terms of plot. It's almost like watching two different shows.

I guess it comes down to why you watch "Lost." If you like character development and a good, touching story, then season 1 is for you. If you're more into mystery and plot, seasons 2 and 3 are probably more your speed.

It really is true: season 1 was about the Losties, season 2 was about the island and season 3 was about the Others.

So as I said, watching season 1 for the second time I am just amazed at how little actually happens. What surprises you most about watching season 1 again? Til next week...

Glad you're back talking about LOST.

Surprises watching season 1 again - I'd forgotten how broken down Sun and Jin's marriage was when the show began.

I'd also forgotten about Sayid and Shannon - so now I'm looking for early clues of an attraction between the two of them. Not sure if I'll find any.

Liz

Is it just me, or did the whole "this is why Charlie got addicted" thing seem a little ... fake? I never really believed his addiction, I don't know why.

That Thing You Do is such a great movie. I've lost track of how many times I've seen it. Love the soundtrack too. I've got both. The movie is on VHS. Holla!

Hi everyone,

Hope you're all doing well.

What is surprising to me is how much I've forgotten about season 1! I'm so loving this review. Thanks again Daniel.

Oh ya, definately "That thing you do"....

Have a great day all, Adele

Daniel,

Big news... I fell in love. It happened, oh, about 5 minutes ago - when I went to your myspace page and saw the picture of Liz ( http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=15525386 ). Oh MY LORD! Liz, if you are reading this, I think you're gorgeous!

The Moth is one of the few Charlie episodes I actually still enjoy. Thing is, most of the episodes in the first season were so good because there really were no redundant flashbacks - every episode told you something new about the character.

And while you're right in that the main mythology of the island didn't pick up until Season 2, I think the episodes were just as character based as the first season. Problem is, at this point many of the flashbacks started becoming boring because we already knew so much about the characters.

Okay, Jack's got daddy issues. We get it.
Charlie's got drug issues. We get it.
Kate's got Marshal issues. WE GET IT.

Every once in a while we'll get a good flashback for an old character - think "The Long Con," "The Glass Ballerina," "or The Man From Tallahassee," but more often than not now they're of "Tale of Two Cities," "Stranger in a Strange Land," or "I Do" ilk. Even Sayid's flashback from "Enter 77" was subpar for him.

The best of the later flashbacks were from unfamiliar characters: Desmond, Juliet, Ben, and an occasional neat one from one of out mainstays - Charlie's Greatest Hits were actually pretty touching.

Plus, we knew he was going to die is it was all good there. :)

Nice to have you back!

I love "That Thing You Do!" It's so much better than "You All Everybody." And the thing that surprises me about season 1 is how all the Losties were so at odds with one another, so divided. You just don't see that now except with Locke, because he wants to stay on the island so badly. But he was always the bomb, even from the first show, and this show once again confirms that! He used Charlie as bait -- hee hee!

Oh, and welcome back Daniel! We missed you! : )

I'M SOOO HAPPY WE'RE ALL BACK!

Hello to all my peeps!

Daniel, I'm glad that you mentioned the episodes being different (i.e., season 1 was all about characters and setting the scene). I'm surprised how much sexual tension there was between Kate, Sawyer and Jack. A little more obvious than I remember it to be.

I thought you were going to be annoyed that it was a Charlie flashback but this episode in particular didn't seem so bad.

I'm outa my groove now....What surprised me most about watching THIS episode in particular was how sad I felt about how Charlie's one and only purpose on the island was to die....I can hear it in the dialogue about choices and stuff, kinda sad.

Completely agree with Jay about the flashbacks. We were all glued to the tube because we were receiving new information at the time.

I agree with Janelle about the whole "how Charlie got addicted" thing. You don't transition from choir boy to junkie without passing Go. If Charlie had ingested some smack in the dressing room, he would have been vomiting so much that he never would have made it on stage. And I've been backstage often enough to know that no one would leave that much smack around in plain site … at least, not without a few off-duty cops.

The episode itself was okay. I was kind of avoiding this one, because of my groundless fear of moths. I realize moths are harmless; I mean, the Tick's partner, Arthur, was a moth (and an accountant). But then there's Mothra, who appeared in several Godzilla flicks along with a few of her own.

Last night's episode did make sense to me this morning. A moth fluttered through my living room. A moment later, she was in the bathroom, trying to fly out the window. I opened it wider for her, and off she flew. And then I asked Locke for an iPhone.

Hey everyone! It took me a while to check the page today, I was so afraid that nothing would be posted and I would be crushed!!! This episode really firms up for me how much I dislike Charlie. He is just so irritating and serves no purpose and I don't know how much longer I can stand to hear Claire say, "Char-lie" in her aussie accent.
I do love watching Jin. To watch him say nothing and yet say everything, excellent. Locke is at his finest....why can't he stay so good?!?!

What surprised me the most while re-watching Season 1 (I'm ahead of you Daniel) was how little some of the characters annoyed me while I was watching it way back then. Don't get me wrong...I have hated Jack pretty much from the very beginning but, now that I've watched it again, Kate irritates the crap outta me. I don't know if it's because I already know what's coming next or what but she really gets on my nerves in Season 1 now. And, really, Shannon didn't bother me as much when the episodes originally aired as they do now while I'm re-watching....Boone was more annoying to me back then.

Good to have you back Daniel.....missed ya last week.

Hi all- missed ya Daniel!

Hope everyone enjoyed their their 4th. This episode I would give solid B. I remember why I liked Charlie at first. (Yes- I was one of the few who thought he wasn't that bad at first...) He had to overcome a major obstacle with is his drug addiction on a strange island and his drug counsler? A man who thinks he talks to the island. But I did like how Locke coached him through it. And when I first watched it- I totally though Charlie was going to take the rest of the drugs on his 3rd chance instead of tossing them in the fire.

Well- everyone have a great day!

Amber

Hey everyone, glad "the diary" is back. Hope everyone is having a fantastic summer.

LMAOROF Allen!!!! Hope you get that iphone...

Allen that was f-ing great!!! I too have a horrid fear of moths....and bees....I swear every time i see a dirty little moth I scream "MOTHRA! MOTHRA!" and run for cover. I know, what a wack job!

ANGEL: What is about Jack and Kate that irritates us so much?!! I promised myself to "catch" the moment Jack crossed into my bad side while I was watching the 1st season....He's just soooo....Jack.

I too was worried about coming here for fear there would be nothing new. I have missed this so much.

Ana - I too felt a little sad watching this episode, just knowing what was going to eventually happen to Charlie. I always liked Charlie, mainly because of his relationships with Locke & Hurley early on. I got a little misty eyed when they showed them onstage singing You All Everybody - until of course my hubby called me a freak. It also made me think of just how tired Desmond would be by now if he had been rescuing Charlie right from the beginning.

Allen, you crack me up! By the way, I love the Tick and his trusty sidekick Arthur!

Not sure if anyone else has pointed this out, but it's a list of the 10 best actors on tv. There's one in particular that will certainly interest all the Lost fans. You're welcome, Daniel.

Tristan, I second your comment about Jin. Watching Season 1 the first time around, I just thought he was a controlling jerk, but now that I'm watching it again I realize how underrated he is as an actor. He is able to convey so much with the arch of an eyebrow or a sliver of a frown. He's turning into my favorite character, jerk or not.

Another thing that surprises me about re-watching Season 1 is how melodramatic the characters are. Kate is full of heavy looks, Jack cries in pretty much every episode, and Sawyer's face is locked in a permanent sneer. Get a grip, people, it's not like your plane just crashed on a remote, mysterious island...

Ana-I can tell you the EXACT moment that Jack made it on to my "A-Hole List": It was when Jack went into the plane to look for antibiotics for the marshall and finds Sawyer in there on his "personal shopping" trip. He basically ripped Sawyer a new one for "stealing from the dead" but then, later on, when Sayid questioned him about burning the bodies, Jack made his comment about not having time to "sort out everybodys God". Jack is a hypocrite. Plain and simple. He wanted to act like he was better than Sawyer because he was only looking for medicine instead of taking everything of use and then turned around and said what he did to Sayid. Yes, burning the bodies was the right thing to do...as was removing anything and everything of use from the plane...and if Jack was so concerned about respecting the dead then he should have at least participated in the services they had on the beach. Plus, for somebody who kept saying over and over again that he wasn't a leader, he sure found it easy to start barking out orders to everybody and making decisions for the group. And....he is a whiney-ass crybaby! :^)

The Office is awesome. i'm so glad you’re finally on board. Jim’s first movie wasn’t License to Wed, though. he was in Dreamgirls and the Holiday as well. but yes, as a starring role, License to Wed is his first. God awful.

great blog as always. i didn't see the episode, so i can't comment. except that i really miss Sawyer this summer. having withdrawals. have we gotten to his flashback episode yet? sigh.

Ari is totally a cylon. I’m watching a Six Feet Under DVD with Ari #7 tonight.

xo

Ah, yes. The Office. Forgot to comment on that bit. I love that show! Jim is probably my favorite character and I can't wait to see what happens between him and Pam. They belong together.

i cried at the season finale! i was so happy for Pam! finally!

I just started watching the US version of The Office and I love it. I was a huge fan of the British version and just assumed I would not like the one on NBC. Boy was I wrong! I watched Season 1 (six episodes) over a rainy 4th of July.

Liz (not the one on myspace)

ALLEN: You got an iPhone? Really?

Johnny 5 is alive.

I loved watching Locke use Charlie as bait. Too funny.

Yeah I'm not a Charlie fan, most annoying and stupid guy character ever. Cept maybe for Kevin from the Office, he annoys the hell out of me.

Great dream Allen, moths gross me out cuz they are fuzzy....i dunno what it is but fuzzy scares me, main reason why I don't eat peaches.

"If you like character development and a good, touching story, then season 1 is for you." Yes, Daniel, this is exactly what hooked me--and a lot of the rest of you, although you may be loathe to admit it at this point: the characters. Why would we care about the Island and its mysteries if we didn't care about the PEOPLE stranded on it?

I've had to catch up to the rest of you by watching several eps this week, having been inundated by a tsunami of work and then gone out of town (to a TV- and computer-free island!). So I'm feeling this even more strongly: What I'm loving about rewatching S1 is seeing how the writers are developing the characters, especially their relationships with each other.

Sure, the Island uncovers hidden strengths and unmasks irritating weaknesses for each of the individual characters. But the Tabula Rasa aspect is the most compelling--the idea of starting with a clean slate. This concept is of course a central idea of 17th century philosopher John Locke. On the Island, no character runs farther--literally--with this than the newly unparalyzed John Locke. But Sun and Jin's abusive, on-the-rocks marriage begins to rebuild. Kate gets her freedom. Charlie overcomes addiction--at least for awhile. Claire keeps the baby she was about to give up.

Of course, giant monkey wrenches lie ahead. And nothing is more fun than the backsliding, infighting and snarking. That's why I love the early bitchy Shannon, torture-y Sayid, fight-me Sawyer, doofy Boone and especially the overly-chatty Charlie. Wouldn't we all be feeling just a tad awkward and out of our social element wrecked on an Island with a bunch of strangers?

Undernourished, dehydrated, sunburned, and--for many of us--off our mood-stabilizing meds? Not to mention away from our cells, Blackberries, laptops and iPods? If the only thing I had to read was Watership Down (next episode), I'd REALLY lose it (BAD experience--8th grade teacher from hell--still not a fan of bunnies.)

So I'm going to be watching closely to see when and how the writers veer away from the character focus...

I've been watching LOST this summer with my granddaughter. Problem is, we can't just watch one episode at a time so now we're on Season 2, disk 3. That's fine, but I get all screwed up as to which one is going to be discussed on Thursday. Plus last Thursday my computer was having major surgery. But all is well now. LOL
I hope everyone had a great Holiday!
I enjoyed this episode but as many of you know, I liked Charlie.
Daniel, I read the Q&A before I read this, and your response to "When exactly did you decide you hated Charlie" cracked me up!! LOL That was great.
I thought the way they (of course) put Locke in control of the heroin was perfect. Just as someone else said, the first time I saw it, I too, expected him to take it. I was surprised to see it thrown into the fire and then that look on Locke's face!! Someone should make a book, composed entirely of Locke's looks. LOL That man has so many facial expressions!! A man of few words, and a bazillion wrinkle combinations. LOL Ohhh how I love Locke. But, I liked Charlie too and I didn't want him to die. Stranger things have happened and with the island being as weird as it is...ok I'll be nice but you know what I'm thinking, Daniel! :-)

Lauren is watching Six Feet Under, I see. What a fantastic show that was!!! I never saw a bad episode and I hated to see it go. Whoever said, "All good things must come to an end" was an idiot.
