All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues

The title says it all -- the theme of Losties and there fathers begins in earnest with this episode. Last week's episode has left me in a good mood for this one, so let's roll:

00:01 -- Jack and Locke go searching for Charlie and Claire. I'm down for anything that involves Jack and Locke bonding.
Lost
00:02 -- "Jack, shhhhhh." -- Locke.

00:03 -- "You're asking the wrong question: not how, why?" -- Locke.

00:04 -- Is there anyone more stubborn than Jack? Seriously, not just fictional characters here.

00:05 -- And our first flashback of the episode reiterates that point. He won't even let dead people die.

00:06 -- The beginning of the Boone and Locke relationship. It's funny how I miss certain pairings of people: like Jack and Locke in season 2 and Locke and Boone from season 1.

00:07 -- Under the category of "things that may only interest me": tonight's ep was written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach (JAVEE-air GREE-joh MARX-watch). The director, Stephen Williams, has a much less cooler-sounding name.

00:08 -- "How many drinks did you have at lunch, Dad?" -- Jack. Here we go.

00:10 -- Apparently Locke hurt Michael's feelings. For once, I want to watch a show where the main character don't chirp at each other over nothing. Nobody is as bad as the people who work at CTU on "24." In the middle of a national crisis those people will bitch about anything.

00:12 -- Jack feels guilty that Claire got taken, since he didn't believe her when she said someone was after her. If I sneezed right now, Jack would feel guilty.

00:14 -- "You're just full of surprises." -- Locke to Kate.

00:15 -- "It's stupid to lie about your name." Walt to James Ford, I mean Sawyer.

00:16 -- "So a tribe of evil natives planted a ringer in the camp to kidnap a pregnant girl and a reject from VH1 hasbeens." -- Sawyer. Actually, yes.

00:17 -- I wonder if at the time they had Boone give that little speech about the guys in the red shirts on "Star Trek," they knew his fate?

00:19 -- Not hard to see why Jack and his Dad never did get along, is it?

00:23 -- When Sayid and Sawyer go at verbally, I always find myself hoping it turns physical, for Lauren's sake. Is that bad?

00:25 -- I do not, for the life of me, remember how to play backgammon. Something about moving all your pieces around the board or something.

00:27 -- "They teach you how to predict the weather at a box company?" -- Boone to Locke.
Lost
00:28 -- Kate is now soaking wet and I am going to need a moment.

00:29 -- "No more warnings." -- Ethan. If you're keeping score at home, that's Ethan 1, Jack 0.

00:32 -- "I need to, um, revise my statement." -- Jack. Father's Days in the Shephard home are about to become awkward.

00:33 -- Alright, now I know what you're thinking: Charlie is hanging from a tree, so Daniel must be happy. Well, you're wrong. At the time, this scene ENRAGED me. The guy was hanging from his neck from a tree and he lived? Are you kidding me? This was probably the angriest I ever was at "Lost" and it really had nothing to do with Charlie. He should have died right there.
Lost
00:37 -- And the worst four minutes of "Lost" ever are finally over.

00:39 -- "All they wanted was Claire." -- Charlie.

00:41 -- Watching Boone and Locke discover the hatch is actually cooler the second time around.

I'm sorry, I can't speak rationally about this episode. I hate the Charlie scene the first time around -- this time I really, really hate it.

So here is my question to you -- am I wrong here? Was that scene completely and utterly ridiculous or is it just me?

Hey everybody! Long time no talk! Anyways, wanted to comment on a few things--

"00:07 -- Under the category of "things that may only interest me": tonight's ep was written by Javier Grillo-Marxuach (JAVEE-air GREE-joh MARX-watch). The director, Stephen Williams, has a much less cooler-sounding name. "

It's the little things, huh Daniel? =)

"00:17 -- I wonder if at the time they had Boone give that little speech about the guys in the red shirts on "Star Trek," they knew his fate?"

I thought the EXACT same thing!!!

"00:25 -- I do not, for the life of me, remember how to play backgammon. Something about moving all your pieces around the board or something."

Note to self-- Don't ask Daniel how to play backgammon...

"00:28 -- Kate is now soaking wet and I am going to need a moment."

Well, that's some talent if you only need about a minute to have a "moment".... ;)~

"00:33 -- Alright, now I know what you're thinking: Charlie is hanging from a tree, so Daniel must be happy. Well, you're wrong. At the time, this scene ENRAGED me. The guy was hanging from his neck from a tree and he lived? Are you kidding me? This was probably the angriest I ever was at "Lost" and it really had nothing to do with Charlie. He should have died right there."

Once again, thought the SAME thing! To think, we would have never been privilaged to know your unbelievable hate for Charlie....

I must say this was a pretty damn good episode......Really getting to know the shit that went down with Jack and his dad, the story about Kate & her dad*, the little comment Hurley made to Walt to not worry-- his $20,000 is a forsure thing but most importantly, the hatch. Granted, I have seen it in "Previously on Lost" & recap shows but damn, seeing the actual episode that it was discovered is just.....wow.

Well, everyone, hope all is well and until next time,

me! =)

*- I'm using Kate & her dad (mainly dad) as a question that I'm going to send to the LDQA.....It's something I have thought about for a while....

i don't think anyone actually remembers how to play backgammon. i always have to read the directions before i play, which is once every 8 years.

I totally think they knew they were killing Boone off when they mentioned the Star Trek reference. And I totally think Charlie was "late" for his death, but I kinda liked seeing him get his revenge on Ethan later on. Charlie's not such a wus when he really steps up. And discovering the hatch was cool -- knowing what is coming is very exciting. Oh, and Locke rocks -- again!

Forgot to say I agree about Jack and his stubborn nature. That guy is really intense, you know? Does his ever just relax? Loved Locke quieting him down!

It makes sense to me that Charlie didn't die - they rescued him very, very shortly after he was hung, didn't they? Also, you have to think that most people who are put to death by hanging are dropped in order to break their necks. That didn't even always guarantee an immediate death. It's one of the most cruel ways to kill a person because it takes so long.

Daniel, to answer your question, I agree that the Charlie scene was ridiculous, because in the real world, that would just not happen. HOWEVER, the fact that they are on the island, changes things. The "island" or "jacob" or whatever, decides who goes and when. I was annoyed about the scene in general but then I thought, why didn't Locke turn around and go back if he had lost the trail. He told Boone that it had gone cold for while but why did he continue. BECAUSE he was meant (by the island) to "come across" the hatch.

The long and the short of it is, the island was directing their fates.

Off topic a little: I'm so glad that you mentioned CTU and how stupid they are during a crisis! I have never hated a fictional character more than I hate Chloe. She always has this dumb look on her face.

Watching that episode again was definitely a different experience for me. I remember initially feeling sorry for Jack and his situation with his Dad and stuff. Now I think Jack is a stubborn prick and probably drove his Dad to drink to some degree.
I miss Boone!

After some time in LA and getting over an absurdly painful bad back, I managed to view four episodes of "Lost" this week and am now caught up. They seemed to be doing more telegraphing than Western Union last night -- red shirts, Charlie asking Ethan to fetch Jack, etc. How many times does Charlie die in this series? Why do so many people run off alone into a monster-infested jungle? Of course, there would be no dramatic tension without such idiot actions, but still...

Backgammon! It was the rage, believe it or not, in 1970's Hollywood. There was even an exclusive Beverly Hills backgammon club. It was called Pips, and membership cost a fortune. I went there often as the guest of a friend who eventually left his wife for the membership secretary. They kept a stash of Rolling Rock on ice for Steve McQueen, who was there often. Pips is where I scored my one and only double-backgammon. This is a distinct memory because (1) I won over $2000 and (2) the elderly red-head laughing while playing at the next booth was Lucille Ball.

So, Daniel, if you ever want to play, I'm ready. (Confession: My skills have deteriorated over the years. I tried playing against some Persians here in San Francisco. Let's put it this way: They invented the game.)

Janice, I gotta agree with you. The first time watching this, I was annoyed that Charlie lived. I mean, how long was his brain without Oxygen? BUT, it does go to show the "healing properties" of the island. It heals who it wants to heal -- Rose and Locke, apparantly Charlie, but not the pregnant women or Benry. Maybe what the island, or Jacob, or whoever is in charge, wants to get everyone OFF the island and to be left alone... There is a kernel of an idea in there somewhere

Ok this is probably way off track but here it goes.

Desmond has been running around the island saving charlie. Where was he here? When did Desmond intertwine with Charlie's fate? When he turned the key? But as that one episode showed he's been going back and forth in a particular timeline. Why didn't Desmond know about the hanging? He was in the hatch.

I hope that makes sense to someone.

Janice: Regarding your comment as to why Locke continued his journey when he had no trail. Remember that he, Boone asked him something similar, and he replied
"Can't you feel it?" --Locke
"What"--Boone
"IT"-- Locke

Locke was following a different trail all along. I think that's why he was so hell bent on getting the hatch open (he felt he was 'lead' there)...and so devastatingly disappointed when he found the Pearl station (maybe it wasn't fate after all)

It's been a LLLLOOOONNNNGGGG time since I've posted!!

Katie: Desmond's flashes didn't come to him until after the hatch exploded.

ANA: Its so good to have you back. And you're totally right!

Maybe the island was trying to make a responsible, mature man out of Charlie and it needed time to work on him. Once he accomplished this, he was gone!

It's good to be back!!! I missed you guys!! I've been busy getting my 13 year old nephew hooked on Lost....I believe I have converted him. Excuse my evil cackle...

So I am dying to know if you guys have seen the NEWLY RELEASED DHARMA VIDEO!!! It is so creepy!!

Any who...here's the link if any of you haven't seen it. And if you have, watch it again!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bTvAUVPyLI

Was Jacob leading Locke to the hatch to put in motion the Lostie's interaction with the Others? Jacob tells Locke "Help Me" because Locke is the only one who CAN help him?

I am throwing out random stuff here and reading WAYYYY to far into everything.

That Dharma video is wicked creepy! Did you catch the "God Loves you like he loved Jacob"? flash?

Jenz: I know!! The other out-of-nowhere bunny is what freaked me out....and everyone's reaction to it. Definitely sheds a little light into the whole time travel theory. Maybe the flash forward is another reality?? WTF!!

WOW Ana, thanks for the Dharma Video link. It was great and WEIRD. Yep definitely time travel. woohoo!

The bunny and the resulting panic freaked me out!

OMG.....the Dharma Video....guys we finally got our first Lost Fix!!!!

guy on from :39? The comments say it's Jacob but I don't recall Jacob being so heavy set.

frame :48. What building is that?!?! Was that the place Juliet went to before she was drugged and taken to the island?!

Lastly, 1:42, some guy is riding a bike at the Other's camp.

oh man, was this a mobisode?!

one last thing...the bunny in his arms has 51 now...not 15. *cue twilight zone music*

yeah I looked at it again...its still 15...damn it!

Maria, wasn't it totally cool??? hehe. We need one of these videos at least once a week to help us make it till next year.

Commenting on my own site ... how meta.

Anyway, there is noooooooooway I am clicking on that video. No spoilers, hints, clues, or anything like that for me.

Must ... stay ... strong ...

Oh, SORRY DANIEL!!! I must say, it doesn't give anything away though!! It's just creepy!!

Maria: That buliding is the same one (I think) that is seen in the orientation video...The one that shows the DeGroots and Alvar Hanso looking out a window....

Daniel, it DOES not give anything away really. It's just fun and creepy. Oh Go ahead!!! Do it. Click that link!!

Daniel, give in and click...its not really a spoiler, it's just more room for theories. I guess this video was shown in a Comic Con. this summer.

I saw it when it first came out. Definitely adds more confusion rather than giving anything away. Does hint at the possibility of time travel, which is why they wwere freaked out that the bunnies were coming in contact with one another. What happens when you time travel and run into yourself?

CATHEAD67: your comment blew me away! What does happen when you're somewhere that you already are. YKWIM? Makes my head spin. Weird.

DANIEL: This little video was put out by Damon and Carlton, isn't that OK to watch? I'll see stuff that they put out, but not spoilers that everyone else is not supposed to release. You know?

Cave into the Peer Pressure Daniel!! You know you want to!

I gotta watch the clip again later (like when my boss is gone), but where the hell did that bunny come flying out of?

Janelle: I say the same place Desmond did!!!....and Richard

That "anonymous" was me...sorry.

Casimir effect or Casimir-Polder force is a physical force exerted between separate objects due to resonance of all-pervasive energy fields in the intervening space between the objects.

Daniel- please get Allen his own blog!!!! I loved the side note on backgammon (as I have tried repeatedly to lean it without success).

Oh- and BTW, I hated this episode too...I cannot believe in this day and age that they could not make it look like Charlie was REALLY hanging there by the neck. It was just too fake...and if beating someone on the chest really brings them back I think someone should notify Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, etc...

Oh, let Daniel stay in the dark if he wants to. They're just trying to toy with us anyway -- they've got lots of time to fill until February!

Ana "I've been busy getting my 13 year old nephew hooked on Lost....I believe I have converted him. Excuse my evil cackle..."

Hee, I converted my 17 year old nephew over the summer. Was living with me. Got him hooked on Lost then Daniel's blog in short order!

Now I gotta buy him the season 4, sigh.
