Raised by Another

Have to say, I am a tad excited for this episode.

For some reason, I always have the hardest time remember Claire's backstory. What was it the psychic guy said to her? Who was her baby daddy? So with this Claire flashback episode next on the list, I am definitely looking forward to it.

Let's roll:

00:01 -- Claire awakens (via the patented eye-opening shot) to the sounds of a baby crying and -- oh by the way -- she isn't pregnant anymore.

00:02 -- Even in a nightmare, roaming around in that jungle at night is not a good idea.

00:04 -- My lord, Claire has some lungs on her.

00:05 -- Jack could be my doctor any day.

00:06 -- Thomas -- not the kinda guy I picture Claire with.

00:07 -- "My mom would disown me." -- Claire. Um, shouldn't her mom be in a coma?

00:08 -- Way to step up, Thomas. Wonder if he'll ever come up again?

00:09 -- I've said it once and I'll say it again: how did Jack not seal the deal with Kate? He had her in the palm of his hand. Am I the only person rooting for Kate to end up with Jack? (Though I guess we kind of know that doesn't happen)

00:12 -- Richard Malkin , the psychic. Now I am excited.

00:13 -- Whatever the fake psychic saw, it sure scared the bejesus out of him. Did he see the plane crash? The island? The Others? Is Aaron the devil?

00:14 -- Dear lord if I never hear Claire scream again it will be too soon. It's like the sound of two wild monkeys raping a cat. Make it stop!

00:15 -- "So I had an idea. I am out here looking for some psycho with Scott and Steve, right? Then I'm realizing, who the hell are Scott and Steve?" -- Hurley. I always find Hurley funnier when he's stating the obvious then when he is just plane stupid.

00:16 -- As Charlie puts a blanket around Claire (a fine gesture, to be sure) I am wondering how Charlie would have reacted if someone else had put the blanket around her? I am going with "sulked a little bit, mixed with a doses of the evil eye."

00:17 -- Oh, Thomas -- don't do it.

00:18 -- He's doing it.

00:19 -- Shit, he did it.

00:20 -- "No, it found me." -- Locke.

00:21 -- Far be it for the Dr. Jack Shepherd to give any kind of medical diagnosis that might make Claire seem in any way wrong about her attack. Right, Charlie? I mean, Charlie was right, but still.

00:22 -- "Where are you from, Ethan Rom?" -- Hurley. Yes, Ethan, where are you from?

00:26 -- "It is crucial that you, yourself, raise this child ... This child, parented by anyone else, anyone but you ... danger surrounds this baby." -- Malkin.

00:27 -- "You musn't allow another to raise your baby." -- Malkin. Or is it "an Other?"

00:30 -- "I am so not moving to the rape caves." -- Shannon.

00:31 -- "You could just give it to me because, dude, you could use the points." -- Hurley. He does have a way of talking to Sawyer, doesn't he?

00:32 -- Charlie is a bastion of calm, isn't he?

00:34 -- When Claire asks Arlene and Joseph Stewart if they could sing "Catch a Falling Star" to the baby, do you think they'd actually say no? They're adoptive parents -- would THAT be a dealbreaker for them? "Sorry, we're desperate for a kid, but we draw the line at 'Catch a Falling Star.'"

00:35 -- Charlie, you're going to regret asking Ethan for help.

00:36 -- Do you think there ever was a couple in Los Angeles?

00:37 -- "Maybe he knew." -- Charlie.

00:38 -- "It has to be this flight. It can't be any other." -- Malkin. Had to be that flight, eh?

00:39 -- Welcome back, Sayid.

00:40 -- "We're not alone." -- Sayid.

00:41 -- "He wasn't on the plane." -- Hurley.

00:42 -- "Hello there." -- Ethan.

Just a phenomenal episode. Great backstory, great writing and we meet our first Other, Ethan. This really feels like the first episode where "Lost" -- as we know it now -- really begins.

I give this episode an A. I really don't remember liking this episode as much then as I do now. If I wasn't looking forward to re-watching "Lost" each week, after this episode I certainly am.

Alright, here's my question: any predictions about Aaron's fate?

You're right. This episode is better the second time around because now we see the bigger picture. I don't know if I have predictions about Aaron. I'll have to think about that one. But why was it so important for Claire to raise Aaron herself? Who is Aaron really? He was obviously meant to be on the island. This whole thing is kinda creepy. And Ethan too -- extremely creepy! That's what makes Lost so good, right -- great creepiness factor! Hurley was great as well. He is always the one that can get to Sawyer, isn't he? Others should take note of how to deal with our favorite con man. Oh, and Locke rocks, as usual.

OK, fine, I'll go first...

1/ Now that Benry has lost Alex, he needs a new kid and manages to kill Claire and take the baby.

2/ Aaron is Alex's boyfriend ... whose name is escaping me right now. Oh, yeah, Carl. It's that pesky time/space question.

3/ Aaron grows up on the island but leads them off the island as a young teenager, ala Moses and the promise land. Wasn't Aaron Moses' brother ...

4/ Aaron is Jacob.

5/ Aaron grows up to be the next leader of the Others after overthrowing Benry.

6/ Aaron grows up to be lead singer of a Drive Shaft tribute band.

This was the first episode that I really got into LOST, and started to love it--I'm pretty sure it was the baby. I am a total sucker for babies. 'Ethan Rom' = 'Other Man'.

Drive Shaft tribute band! Haha! Love it.

BEEJ: Good Job on Ethan's name! I think we need to start disecting everyone's names and see if they tell us anything else.

OK, I might be reaching but "Catch a Falling Star", could that be the plane falling out of the sky.

I also noticed that both Claire and Boone each had an asian symbol on their person. Boone had a t-shirt with characters on it and Claire had a necklace with a character on it. Can anyone get a screencap on that so we can figure out what it means?

Answer to your ??: I think Aaron is going to be Jacob and with his new body/spirit, somehow overthrow Benry and the Others and/or the Other-Others (the ones on the boat)!

"Ay, Brutha"

That brings up a good question. What do we call the people on the boat? Other-others gets confusing!

Boat + Others = Bothers!

Haha! Good one.

i think Claire flashbacks are underrated. they never really disappoint. even though she isnt one of my fav characters on the show, her flashbacks are consistent and a breath of fresh air from the kate/sawyer/jack/juliet and ben/locke scenes that i tire of.

as for the aaron theory. i think he is the antichrist or something. maybe being raised by someone other that claire would have been detrimental for society. or maybe the psychic just has a problem with adoption... who knows. all we do know is that whatever the psychic's issue, her getting trapped on the island made her want to keep aaron. maybe that was all he wanted for her.

This was a great episode! I had forgotten about the psychic...I wish we knew what he saw! I think you are right about another = an other. And I love how Ethan Rom = other man. This was yet another episode that was cooler the second time around knowing what we know now. I love how Ethan was just nonchalantly hanging around after Claire woke up screaming. Now we know that he was the one who injected her, but never would have noticed him the 1st time watching this episode. I always thought Claire's flashbacks were good and I think people tend to not like her character because in later episodes she seemed to always be in the background caring for Aaron. I would love to see more of her story come back to the forefront of the show...especially her connection to Jack.

Boat + Others = Bruthas!!

Hi Janelle and Janice! I always thought that was really clever about Ethan's name. His middle name should be Creepy. Didn't we talk before about how the actor is related to Tom Cruise? They have that same flat forehead heavy brow thing going if you really look at them together.
Janelle you are right, Aaron was Moses' older brother. He was a good speaker and spoke for Moses. He was also a priest. I believe Mr. Eko reiterates that later on. But I don't know what Aaron's purpose is.
The weird thing I noticed was how Richard Malkin really changed between the time he told Claire she HAS to raise the baby and then telling her to take it to LA to be adopted. I think that even though he is a fraud, he really did sense something about her that scared him and told him about her, but then somebody offered him money to get her to go to LA and his greed made him lie to her. Was it Jack's dad trying to get her to come to LA so he could meet her, or something or someone more sinister?

Hey Carly and Janice, Cathead and all of the other regulars. Good to see you all!

I have to admit, I didn't watch last night, I watched three hours of news coverage of the bridge collapse. I lived in that vicinity for awhile(southern MN)but avoided downtown Mpls like Danielle avoids the Others.

However, I think it would be interesting to watch this ep and the one where Eko meets the psychic back to back, and see if there are any bits we can pick up about why he'd want Claire to get on the plane. Remember, he tells Eko he is a complete fraud, that he does it just to get paid. But if he had a REAL vision, he'd be freaked out.

I do wonder if the prospective adopted parents, if they existed at all, are someone that we know.

I do love the Claire flashbacks, as Sue said, because they consistently tell us these great little tidbits that tie in nicely later.

I've seen comments from ComicCon that Jack and Claire will find out next season that they are related. That ought to be cool.

I read some play by play from thefutoncritic.com and its pretty interesting the tid-bits of info that Damon and Carlton were giving away.

I can't wait for February!

Janice, you crack me up. Those were hilarious Aaron predictions. I can't top your list and I don't even want to try.

No-I don't think there was ever a couple in Los Angeles. I think the Physic knew the plane was going to crash and made up the whole adoption scenario just to get Claire on the plane. The question is why; was it to protect her and Aaron or to deliver them both to the Others?

Ethan has to rank at the top of the list for Creepiest Creep! Especially what he does in the next episode.

Hey, first time commenter here. I'm pretty sure that the psychic sent Claire to LA to meet the "adoptive parents" for the sole purpose of getting her stranded on the island. Then she would be forced to keep the baby and raise him herself. I think Aaron will probably have some kind of power, like Walt, that can be used for evil if he's raised by the wrong person/people.

Totally agree. This episode (along with Numbers and Special) really made Lost the show it is today.

Personally, I think Malkin was hired by Christian Shepherd to keep tabs on Claire (and his unborn grandson) and make sure she didn't give him away.

When the show ends, I'm guessing Aaron's going to live in LA with Claire and his grammy. :)

JAY: YOU ARE TOTALLY DEAD ON!! That was fantastic: what if the Los Angeles couple were actually the Shepards (Jack and his mom). The reason the psychic changed his mind and put her on the plane was because Christian was now dead and in order to protect her, "they" sent her to the island with Jack, and Christian, I guess, if they ever find his body.

TERESALYNN: Thanks but all kudos should go to Janelle. She's the one with the brains!

Interesting permise that the Physic could be working with Christian. I do get the feeling that the Physic was looking out for Claire and the baby, although his first reaction to the reading was really terrifying. It seemed strange that he did a 180 and then tried to help her. A relationship between the Physic and Christion could explain that. I'd love for them to go back and let us see his vision.

Oops, sorry...It was a very long day yesterday. Jannelle- You ROCK!!

I definitely think Aaron's going to have some sort of powers. But what will he be able to do?

Thanks Janice. Christian's death is the only puzzling thing with my theory. It's possible that when Christian died, Malkin took it upon himself to send Claire to LA (or maybe Christian set something up in the event of his death - he did bring Ana-Lucia along for protection after all). Perhaps it was set up for Jack's mom to meet Claire at the airport and the reason she HAD to be on Flight 815 was simply because it was Jack's flight too.

But then again, Christian could still be alive and could have orchestrated it all from behind the scenes.

You know, the more and more I think about it... Christian could totally be alive.

I posted this on the Solitary blog, please someone give me the answer...lol

Hey Daniel and Lost gang,

You referenced that Locke and Charlie have interaction with Nadia. Now I remember the scene with Charlie when she is getting mugged, but I don't remember the scene with Locke and Nadia, please someone refresh my memory. I still love Season One, Season Two is good as well. Thanks and have a nice weekend!

Ahh it's been so long! I'm back everyone!

Aaron being Jacob...the possibility of that being true and how that would work out blew my mind.

I think Aaron will be taken from the others and he becomes the new leader.

As for the psychic...he used to be an Other, he had powers there and so he felt that off the island he'd still use them even if they didn't work anymore. I bet he had a weird psychic connection with Jacob after he sent Claire off the first time around.

Hello to everyone! How how I've missed you all!

If you haven't found the connection yet, Locke did a house inspection for Nadia.

Thanks Janelle,

Do you remember what episode that was? Season?

Season 1, but can't for the life of me remember which ep. check www.lostpedia.com, they do a good job of showing when people have shown up in flashbacks

I think Aaron is going to take Walt's place as having a connection with the island.
About the Locke/Nadia connection, I could have sworn it was the end of Season 2, but it could have been the beginning of s3

Jenz, you are right, I thought it was Season 1, but I checked Lostpedia myself and it was Season 2 after all.
