Special
My bad.
I've been a little under the weather the past several days and I haven't felt much like writing or watching TV (yes, that's how you know when I'm really sick). But I'm back with a vengeance and actually looking forward to doing something productive.
By the way, I finally saw "Superbad" last week and I have to say that movie was funny as all hell. I've also started watching "Flight of the Conchords" and "Mad Men" and I recommend them both highly.
That said, let's roll:
00:01 -- Reason no. 752 why I hate Charlie: Michael is looking for his son, but Charlie interrupts asking about Claire's bags.
00:02 -- "WALT!" -- Michael
00:04 -- "Whoa." -- Boone. Hey. don't steal Keanu's signature line!
00:06 -- When Michael gets all worked up over Walt, I don't feel that father-son emotional type of the thing from him. Feels forced, like Hurley said earlier.
00:07 -- Any conversation that contains the words "I still love you, you know I do" is never going to end well.
00:09 -- "It just can't happen ... He can't grow up here." -- Michael
00:11 -- Ah, the raft. I forgot the raft. I am actually looking forward to seeing this storyline are again.
00:13 -- Any conversation that contains the words "I've been seeing someone" is never going to end well.
00:14 -- Claire's diary is missing. Stop the presses.
00:16 -- Sawyer and Charlie fighting makes me smile.
00:17 -- Fashion fact: I have the shirt Boone is wearing. Strangely enough, so does Ari.
00:18 -- "I catch you with my son again, I'll kill you." -- Michael to Locke. Pardon me for saying so, Michael, but I got $20 on Locke.
00:19 -- Any conversation that contains the words "You're not my father!" is never going to end well.
00:20 -- If I were Walt, I wouldn't listen to Michael. What could be grounded be like on the like on the island? No Smoke Monster for a month?

00:22 -- Any conversation that involves the mother of your child asking you if another man can adopt your son will never end well.
00:23 -- "Let's go find your boy." -- Locke to Michael. Locke needs his own theme music.
00:25 -- If I were Charlie, I'd have read Claire's diary. Also, if I were Charlie, I'd have killed myself.
00:28 -- I don't know quite what to make of the whole "dead bird" scene -- I think it's just there to make us wonder about Walt, but it didn't do a hell of a lot for me.
00:31 -- "There is something about him ... Sometimes when he's around, things happen. He's different somehow." -- Brian, talking about Walt. Real stand-up guy this Brian is.
00:32 -- If I ever write a television show or a movie, there will be no box of unread letters. I am sick of that device; it's old.
00:33 -- Walt reads a comic book with a polar bear, and a polar bear attacks him. Now, we saw the polar bear way back in the beginning, so I don't know if the two things are tied together. Still, it's a tad strange (and I'm not even talking about the fact there is a polar bear on a tropical island).
00:34 -- "I'm your father." -- Michael to Walt. Had a little more punch when Darth Vader said it.
00:35 -- "I'm not going anywhere with you." -- Walt to Michael. Ah, how those words must have warmed Michael's heart.
00:37 -- Definitely the best polar bear attack rescue scene I have ever witnessed.
00:39 -- Ugh, again with the box of unread letters.
00:42 -- Welcome back, Claire.

So here's my thing: if this was the episode that was supposed to make us think Walt was "different," they did a terrible job of it. A bird died? That's all you could come up with. And over time, do you really think they paid off this storyline at all? Feels to me like they abandoned the idea and just shipped Walt off into oblivion.
The entire Walt storyline has been a let-down thus far. Then again, he hasn't been on the show for two years, so I guess that's part of it (hallucinations don't count).
Comments
Nice to have you back Daniel! I didn't pick up on Walt being so different the first time around, but it makes more sense now. I agree they have dropped this so far, but I think it will turn out to be very important later. I really feel no love for Michael, then or now. Wonder how he will redeem himself, or if he will. Oh, and Lock ROCKS, as usual. He DOES need his own theme music!

The way you feel about Charlie -- that's how much I hate Michael. I was actually glad when he turned out to be evil (or able to be turned by the Others, which is basically the same), because that meant someone might kill him.
He did us all a favor by killing Anna Lucia. She was just standing between Jack and Kate. I was so sad to see Libby go, but it seemed like a Hurley love scene was on the horizon, so I was sort of relieved.
As for Walt being special -- it really does feel like they've abandoned that, but if it turns out he's really appearing to people (instead of it just being Jacob/the island), then maybe he is special.
Glad to hear you're feeling better.

I agree I do not like Michael and seeing this episode again just reinforces my dislike. Locke rocks as usual. Hey Daniel, glad to see you back. Hope you get to feeling better.

Glad you're feeling good enough to get back to the Lost Diary Daniel. We missed you.
I think we'll have to see where they go with the Walt storyline before I agree that he's not really being seen by people on the island.
You're are so right about Mad Men - excellent show! If you haven't seen it, it's on AMC and repeats several times after an original episode airs each Thursday night.

Hey, Daniel! Not really a comment but a question. Have you seen the promos for the new CBS series "Cane", starring Jimmy Smits and Nestor Carbonell (aka "Dr. Richard Alpert")? How does the success of that series affect the story line and/or death of Richard on LOST? Also, a piece of trivia: Carbonell voices the character of Senor Senior, Jr. on Disney's animated series "Kim Possible".
Love the "diary". Keep up the good work....can't wait for the new season!!
Posted by: Angie | August 30, 2007 08:54 AM
so no one here would kill for their children? i dont even want to have kids and i know that i would kill for mine.
yeah, i saw Superbad about a month ago at a screening and felt so lonely when i would retell the jokes to my friends. that is seriously the funniest movie i have seen in a long time. it tops Knocked Up by a long shot. Seth Rogan gets better and better.
Posted by: sarah | August 30, 2007 08:58 AM
Angie, the word is that Nestor won't have much if any time for Lost. I kinda secretly hope Cane gets canceled because I love the character of Richard, and his eyeliner.
Posted by: cathead67 | August 30, 2007 09:26 AM
I wish they wouldn't abandon the Walt story line, but I agree, I can do without Michael! What really annoys me though is that if they do continue with Walt, it is so obvious that this is a growing teenager play a little boy. I keep hoping that they have secretly already shot scenes with Malcolm David Kelly when he was still the young Walt we remember. But that would require that the writers/producers had the foresight to see in advance how the show would play out and as you are proving by going over the first season, Daniel, that doesn't seem to be the case! Even when Walt "appeared" to Locke last season, he was obviously older and it bugged me. I expected Locke to say, "Hey, you've gotten taller!" So basically, my point is, I hope they continue with the Walt story line, but I'm not sure that they can do it in a plausible way.
Posted by: colleen | August 30, 2007 09:51 AM
OK, I know this is a strange observation to make but if they have a pregnancy test on the island, don't you think SOMEONE had a pair of tweezers? The eyebrows in the close ups are so out of control. It grosses me out! And, yes, hair makes me gag!
Posted by: Gracie | August 30, 2007 09:52 AM
Daniel, glad you're feeling better! I love your journal and this is the first time I'm posting. I can't stand Michael but I have to say I think it is the actor in this case, Harold is just TOO much most of the time. Yes, I'm a Mom and I'd definitely kill for my children (perhaps I already have!)but I wouldn't be as annoying as Mike/Harold about it. They should have cast Taye Diggs...
I love Nestor Carbonell and I think "Cane" will tank soon and he will be free. Him and his eyeliner.
Stay strong Brutha!

Daniel, Thank Goodness you're better. Someone told me that SuperBad was just that..."super bad", but i'm gonna take your word for it and probably go out and see it this weekend.
I like this episode because Locke was all Rambo-like. I don't particularly care for Michael. I like Walt but I wish there was a deeper establishment between him and the island.
On a personal note: I'm actually voting for Cane to be successful. We can really see what Nestor is all about being a bad guy! If he can do BATMAN and CANE at the same time, then he can do LOST and CANE at the same time. It's not like he has huge scenes on Lost anyways. Just a glimpse of eyeliner and we're good!!!
Posted by: Janice | August 30, 2007 09:07 PM
Then again, didn't the others take Walt because he had special powers?
Posted by: Madii | August 31, 2007 04:31 AM
Hey Daniel - so glad you are feeling better!
I have to echo the sentiments of many others. I simply have never been a fan of Michael! It may be the actor... his incessant intensity simply irritates me. I don't know. But I do know it won't bother me at all if it is his character that ends up being the one in that coffin from last season's flash forward. Reading about this episode again reminds me how I would cringe while watching Lost every time Michael appeared in a scene... that intense "my boy, my boy... Walt..." I grew weary of that very quickly!
I can't imagine that the writers will abandon the Walt "being special" storyline. Didn't it seem that Locke clued in on that? Didn't Locke seem to appreciate Walt's ability, whatever that is?

"Flight of the Conchords" rocks my socks. I love that show. my fav. is the hip-hoppopotomus! lol. glad u feel better daniel.
Posted by: maria | August 31, 2007 05:48 AM
Hey Polly, I'm with you that Taye Diggs would have been awesome! He's a good actor and very good to look at. Yum! : )
Posted by: cathead67 | August 31, 2007 05:50 AM
Taye Diggs?! if you want eye candy, just say so, but Taye Diggs couldnt act his way out of a wet paper bag!
Posted by: sarah | August 31, 2007 05:54 AM
"wet paper bag"... LOL!!!
Posted by: Janice | August 31, 2007 06:51 AM
Aw, you're not givin' my man Taye any love on that one. Ok, how about Shemar Moore! ; )

Back off Taye!!! He's a Syracuse grad.

Uh oh, now you've got Daniel commenting on his own blog!
Posted by: cathead67 | August 31, 2007 07:14 AM
I agree with a bunch of you, I don't care for Michael at all at this point. I do like Harold as an actor (he was fabulous in Romeo+Juliet), however, so I think that the writers are trying to make us NOT like him ... maybe because they want us to believe he could shoot an unarmed woman, or two. I don't have kids, either, but if someone hurt one of my nephews, I would kill someone to protect them.
Of course, at this point, he still barely knows his own son, is a little overprotective, and is trying to figure out how to be a dad. So I will give him a break.
I love the whole to read or not to read the diary, and the internal fight Charlie has on the topic.
Glad you are back Daniel. I understand the too sick to care feeling. When that happens, I wish I was still at home with my mommy to take care of me!
Posted by: Janelle | August 31, 2007 07:45 AM
I'm gonna second Janelle, Harold is a fantastic actor. I especially liked him on OZ. But somehow he's been made to be very selfish on Lost. I hope that when he comes back we'll see a whole new side to him.
Posted by: Janice | August 31, 2007 08:06 AM
I enjoy reading the comments posted and sometimes I agree with them and sometimes I don't.
I don't have a problem with the character of Michael or the actor who portrays him. I think Michael is very frustrated to not know his son and to be learning how to be a parent to him in this unusual situation on the island.
I was glad to read that he would be part of the next season - not sure how much we'll see of him but maybe he'll gain back some of the trust and respect of the LOSTIES. He has a long road ahead of him after what happened.
Posted by: Liz | August 31, 2007 08:46 AM
To Janice- an exec from the network that Cane is on (not ABC) all but said they wouldn't let Nestor play both parts even if his is a small part on LOST. She said it would confuse viewers.
On another note my Season 1, Disc 2 is trashed and won't play so I am way behind (bought a new one on e-bay and still waiting for it to arrive).
But as for killing people to protect your children- Ana Lucia and Libby were no direct threat to Walt- Michael had many other avenues he could have followed to gain Walt's freedom rather than kill innocent people. I guess my point is we would kill to protect our children from a direct threat but I doubt most would kill someone who is not even a threat to their children without exploring every other possibilty first. So Michael is bad! My 2 cents at least. Glad you're back Daniel.
Posted by: jen | August 31, 2007 10:17 AM
Yeah, I remember reading that. Pretty disappointing isn't it. But I'm gonna hold a personal vigil that it all works out.
Posted by: Janice | August 31, 2007 10:47 AM
We want Richard! We'll be left hanging on part of the storyline without his character. It was just getting interesting!
Posted by: cathead67 | August 31, 2007 11:16 AM
I'm not putting a lot of stock in Cane making it past October, so Richard will be back ... but how much of next season, if any, has been shot yet?
Posted by: Janelle | August 31, 2007 11:43 AM
I want to say they are about 4 or 5 episodes in already. Which, btw, Nestor has been able to do full time and still be available to film Batman.
BTW: The new Entertainment Weekly (with Foster in the cover) has the profiles of the most recent additions to the Lost family. As a courtesy, I'm not going to list them here, but they are very interesting actors.
Posted by: Janice | August 31, 2007 12:41 PM
Wait, I didn't know about Batman. does that mean if I go lurk around lower Wacker, I may run into him? He seems so much more accessible than Heath or Christian.
OK, I just went and looked it up on IMDB. I just want to say that Nestor makes a much better-looking mayor than Daley, and if he were the mayor, I would watch his press confabs more often.
God, if I was in the city and not the burbs I would be there tonight.
Posted by: Janelle | August 31, 2007 12:56 PM
I think that Walt definitely has a special significance on the island and don't give up on that storyline yet! I think Madii is right, the others took Walt and Michael for a reason. Also, I think that it was very significant that Walt appeared to Locke in the pit in 'Through the Looking Glass'
Posted by: Sus | August 31, 2007 05:31 PM
The bird scene didn't do much for you eh? Did anyone else notice that Walt was reading a book about birds and the same thing he was reading came after him, smashing into the window? Then he reads a comic book about polar bears and the same thing happens. I found this scene more enlightening because I noticed what Walt was reading in the flashback before the bird incident.
Posted by: James | September 4, 2007 10:46 AM
I forgot to add something... I think the scene with the bird and book on birds and the polar bear and comic book shows a hint of Walt's power... He has the same power as the "big box" that Ben talks about with Locke. If Walt thinks something up and concentrates hard enough, he can make it appear.
Posted by: James | September 4, 2007 10:51 AM
I am pretty much ambivalent about Michael. It kind of felt like the writers didn't know what to do with him after a while. I wish the whole Walt has powers storyline was elaborated further on because I'd like to know why the heck he appeared to Shannon and then Locke.
Posted by: Jenz | September 4, 2007 12:16 PM
i think walt appeared to shannon before she died to warn her that she was going to die. maybe he appeared to locke to warn him the same thing. RIP Locke.... (im not a big locke fan)
Posted by: klaudia | September 4, 2007 12:54 PM
Intriguing insight, James, about Walt's power being the same as conjuring what you want in the "big box." I agree with the commenters who want to see Walt return, and have his absence (and stunning height growth!) explained. (Maybe Walt has been hanging with Jacob?) The Island must have some magical growth hormone in its medical bag o' tricks.
