L.D.Q.A. -- 9/24
You know what isn't overrated? Health insurance.
I've seen a chiropractor twice and gotten a massage at the place once and I am almost back to 100%. My chiropractor appointments only cost $15 and the massage is $30. Health insurance -- it isn't just for the sick!
Oh and I still haven't watched "the bunny video." Will power, motherf**kers!
Let's roll:
Q: Here a question for you. After reading the last few posts on season 1, I'm noticing a lotta love for Boone (maybe a little too much?). Granted he was a cool character, but is it ok to have a "man crush" on fictional character? -- Jon

A: Absolutely. Other characters I have a man crush on include: Tyler Durden, Darryl Zero, John McClane and David Addison. I'm also way too big of a fan of Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Phillippe than I should be. In fact, I have invented what I like to call the Ryan Phillippe Theory.
The Ryan Phillippe Theory goes like this: both Ryan and Freddie Prinze Jr. had their breakout roles in "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Ever since that movie, Freddie has gone to do the same movie roughly 20 times -- "She's All That," "Down to You," "Boys and Girls," "Head Over Heels," and "Summer Catch" -- all between 1999 and 2001!
Ryan, on the other hand, has done "Cruel Intentions," "The Way of the Gun," "Gosford Park," "Igby Goes Down" and "Crash." Not a single "just for the paycheck" movie in the bunch (ok, maybe "Antitrust"). He could have just relied on his good looks and made bank for the rest of the career. Instead, he tried doing something I like to call "acting." Is he Tom Hanks? No, but he tries and that's more than anyone can say for Freddie.
Q: Did you watch the Emmy's? I didn't watch the entire show because, honestly, I get bored with it BUT I did see Terry O'Quinn win his Emmy! My husband and I were flipping out! Hope you had a chance to see it. A grand LOST moment. -- Gracie
A: It took me about a week to get through the whole Emmys (I was stuck working that night). Locke was awesome, obviously, and the Stewart/Colbert/Carell thing was hysterical and Sally Field never disappoints at an awards show. I don't blame Ryan Seacrest for sucking so bad (I don't think HE was so bad, the material was shit). But who thought he'd make a good host? Nobody thought he'd be good! I want to see the list of people that passed on hosting. It better have been EVERYONE.
Also, I tend to wear a lot of strange-colored shirts (purple is a staple of my wardrobe) but I cringed a bit at Locke's hot pink shirt. A for effort, T for nice try.
Q: Hey Daniel, you want to take back your "best episode ever" comment about "...In Translation"? -- Me
A: Um, maybe. I still think this episode is definitely among the top 5 and I think what I liked most about is the balance. It may not have hit the highest of highs, but there were no lows either. And if you wanted to show someone who had never seen "Lost" before a single episode, wouldn't you pick this one? It stands on its own very well. All you need to say beforehand is, "They're stuck on an island and the Korean woman speaks English, only her husband doesn't know." I keep going back and forth, but I still love this episode.
Speaking of love, a little movie recommendation for you. If you happen to live in NY, LA, Austin or Toronto, I highly recommend "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." Incredibly well-directed, Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck are incredible and it's just a gorgeous movie. A little long at 2:40, but well worth it.

Hi Daniel, I've been MIA for awhile - pouting maybe because there are no new Lost eps on but I have missed you and your writing. (Also, I'm hopelessly addicted to my Wii and Zelda lately) Just saying .....
Got no questions, got nothing - just been missing you. I did watch a TMZ show the other day and kind of looked for you. Is the newsroom thing for real?

The man crush - that's the "non-sexual crush" from Seinfeld. I think George had a thing for one of Elaine's boyfriends.
I'm in Austin but I'm not interested in seeing that Jesse James movie. Maybe there's been too much Brangelina news for me to take an interest in a movie he has done.
Thanks for posting something Daniel.

Daniel: I laughed out loud reading your "bunny video" comment. I've got $20 you'll break before S4 starts!!
I've been reading alot of good reviews lately about that Jesse James movie. Wish I had the time to go see it. I grew up on westerns, my dad used to watch them OFTEN!
May I recommend PAN'S LABYRINTH. Words can't describe the outstanding storyline and the visuals. Totally fantasy, of course, but worth the time.
Speaking of time...tomorrow is D-day for CANE! A little bit of Nestor, though off the island, should be enough to keep me going until Lost in '08.
"AY BRUTHA!"

Saw Across the Universe and I loved it, I am of course a huge Beatles fan but the storyline and the visual feel of everything really made the movie. Jim Sturgess was amazing too.
Daniel...you will break. Whether it be an accidental viewing or intentional...you'll break. ha!

I'm interested in seeing the Jesse James movie, but it's not like anything even remotely indie comes out around this way.
I am hemming and hawing about whether or not I should watch Cane. On one hand, I would like to see Nestor. On the other, that's supporting a show that took Nestor away from us.

Maybe I've been living under a rock, but, what the hell is the "bunny video?"
Posted by: Annie | September 25, 2007 10:15 AM
Annie,
It's a spoiler. Go to you tube and search for Lost Orchid, and it's the first result

Annie: I would consider the "bunny video" more a general "teaser" to the show. It was released by the dynamic duo themselves so I thought it was pretty safe to watch. It really only added MORE questions, than anything else. But it looks like Daniel is going to stick to his guns and not watch it. Which is fine.

Ah, David Addison! Now there was a well-written TV character!!! Daniel, you may just have cost me $100. I just popped over to Amazon and saw that all five seasons of Moonlighting DVDs are available.
David Addison was a crush-worthy character, whatever your gender or sexual orientation. The writers gave Cybill and Bruce such smoking dialogue, I think it literally burnt up their personal relationship--and hence the eventual meltdown of the show. Have you heard her speak about Bruce in interviews recently? She still seems to be carrying a combo torch/axe for him.
Here's a question for you: Will we ever have another TV show with this style of 30s/40s screwball comedy, rapid-fire banter? I remember hearing somewhere that the Moonlighting scripts were literally TWICE the normal hourlong TV show length, because they contained so much dialogue. Or have writers gone super-lazy, as in HBO's new boink-fest Tell Me You Love Me: Just pen a few snoozy lines, and then let the characters get busy?

There was a series on BBC America called the Gil Mayo Mysteries that reminded me of Moonlighting. I'm not saying it was just like it but the interaction and dialog between the characters did remind me of Moonlighting.
I read that the Gil Mayo show was not very popular and not renewed.

Vermonter: You are dead-on re "Tell Me". I've seen soft porn with better dialog than this. I have since lost interest. Hopefully it'll be cancelled and they can send Penny back to Lost!
I'm gonna have to go watch Moonlighting now. X-Files and Bones had/have a lot of that chemistry and just a dab of sexual tension. But not as much as Cybill and Bruce from what I'm gathering.

Loved Moonlighting! Never missed it while I was in college. Ah, the good old days.
And I don't want to watch Cane even though I love Nestor and Jimmy Smits because I want Nestor back on Lost!

Wow- I am surprised no one has posted about Cane- not all that thrilling don't think I'll be getting invested.
Posted by: jen | September 26, 2007 11:21 AM
I didn't watch Cane last night, but I don't think I am the demographic they are looking for on the show. I love each and every one of those actors, from Rita Moreno to Nestor, but the little bit of it that I caught did nothing for me. It feels like it wants to be one of the shows on Spanish television, but can't be (because if the US censors knew what was going on on Spanish TV, their family values would be accosted)

Because I've been living under a pile of school work, I don't know what the hell you all are talking about (with the exception of the bunny video, of course) TV? What's that?!? You mean to tell me time in TV land has not stood still in aticipation of LOST???
