Numbers
Sorry I am a day late on this. I've been a little under the weather this week (the TMZ newsroom can best be described as a meat locker) and I was going to launch into this whole tirade about how much I hated the premiere of "Heroes," but I have decided to let it go. "Lost" had a few bad eps last season (though not nearly as bad as "Heroes"), so hopefully it can bounce back.
Two more quick snap judgments: "Reaper" is fantastic and "My Name Is Earl" was actually funny last night (instead of just cute, like it has been). I also liked "Dirty Sexy Money," though I wish I had liked it more.
Let's roll:
00:01 -- Remember how last week I was bewildered as to why people would speak in English to Jin? Well now I have no idea why Jin is speaking Korean to Hurley. Just keep saying it over and over again man, eventually he'll figure it out.
00:02 -- We're a minute into this episode and already I like where it's going. The last few episodes haven't done much to advance our overall plot. The hatch, the island, the French Woman -- all forgotten about. Time to get this train back on track.
00:03 -- See? The numbers! Now we're talking.
00:04 -- "That makes tonight mega lotto jackpot number 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 with the mega number 42."
00:05 -- Hurley's interview skills are, how do you say ... lacking.
00:06 -- "Grandpa?" -- Hurley. Dude, that sucks, dude.
00:08 -- I want to help Locke with a project!
00:09 -- Hip-hop music sounds completely out of place on this show.
00:11 -- "Ever since we won the lottery, it's like we had nothing but bad luck." -- Hurley
00:13 -- "Yo, French chick!" -- Hurley
00:15 -- Michael and Jin make a cute couple.
00:16 -- I think Sun is hotter when she speaks Korean. And no, I have no idea what that says about me.
00:19 -- As I've said before, I am an awesome Connect Four player. I would whoop Leonard's ass.
00:20 -- "What do the numbers mean?" -- Hurley
00:21 -- "You opened the box!" -- Leonard. Imagine a box ...
00:22 -- "Dudes, chill." -- Hurley
00:23 -- No way in HELL that bridge would have held up Hurley.
00:27 -- "He put a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger." -- Martha Toomey. Pleasant.
00:28 -- Oh shit! I forgot what Locke was making until just now. Just another reason why he is the man.
00:31 -- "You must be the French chick." -- Hurley
00:33 -- Good ol' fun time Hurley is pissed. I kinda like the new Hurley.
00:34 -- Danielle mentions the radio tower. You gotta love this show. The radio tower first gets mentioned now and then we don't see it until the end of season three. You have to pay attention on this show.
00:36 -- "Thank you." -- Hurley to Danielle. It's not a good sign when a crazy French woman who has been living alone on a creepy island is the one who proves your sanity.
00:37 -- "She says, 'Hey.'" -- Hurley to Sayid
00:39 -- Do you think Locke knew it was Claire's birthday somehow?
00:41 -- "Back home, I'm worth $156 million." -- Hurley
00:42 -- "Fine, don't tell me." -- Charlie. Why is it so crazy that Hurley could be rich? Fat people can't be rich? Rich people don't say "dude" a lot?
I've said several times before that I find Hurley to be a very one-dimensional character, though on multiple occasions (beginning with this episode) he has proven himself capable of more. Just saying "dude" a lot and making self-deprecating jokes does not make him a good character. Storylines like this does.
In re-watch, this episode is like a B, though I imagine the first time around I probably freaked out at the end when is I saw the numbers. Sometimes, you just can't recapture the feeling of watching "Lost."
Comments
The whole "box" thing really freaked me out because it meant a lot more this time around since "The Man From Tallahassee."
And it's frustrating seeing this whole thing with the numbers again because we still don't know why they are so important. What is so special about those particular numbers? More to come on that, I'm sure.
She says "hey". Hee hee. Loved it the first time and I love it again.
And do I have to say that Locke rocks again? Even when the show is not about him, it is about him.
And did we count how many times Hurley said "dude"? Could be a drinking game like "honor" or "shame" with Jin and Sun episodes.

I am finally caught up with the watching, yeah me, and watched this last night, too!
this is still one of my favorites, because of the details. Tom and Leonard starting hearing the numbers 16 years ago, the same time that Danielle crashed. Hurley finds out he owns a Box Co in Destin. when do we find out if someone worked at a Canadian Shoe Factory or in florida orange groves. We hear about the black rock and still think it's a Rock. Hurley "opened the Box", but we still don't know what drove Lenny to the mental ward ... This is one of my favorite eps for all those reasons.

Oh, and Daniel, now that the regular season has started and there are things to watch on Wednesday night, I would totally understand if you moved the diary to another night, at least until the premier in Feb. One person can only watch so much TV, even with TiVo, and have a life

i am a slave to DVR.
even though we still do not know what the numbers actually mean, i am pretty sure it can be figured out. we know what the significance of the number 23 is... go from there. personally, i dont have to know what the numbers mean. having them looming around constantly, there needs no definition. the numbers are there own definition IMHO.

NEW LOST PODCAST w/Lindelof & Cuse. Anyone hear it? It was Lost's 3 year anniversary so they did a surprise podcast on 9/22. They actually called a few fans that submitted questions. Pretty cool.
Daniel - you'll have to forgive me but I found it on the spoilers website.

Forgive me- some dumb questions and comments. Sarah- how do we know what 23 means? Forgive if I am being dense. Janelle- the box factory is in Tustin (not important just the city is a few miles from where I live). And 15- that was the number on the rabbit in the Orchid video. Meaningless I am sure but thought I'd mention it.

You're only a few miles from Tustin? Then surely you've run into Locke! ;)

I can see that hot pink shirt from my office!
Posted by: jen | September 28, 2007 11:51 AM
Yeah, what was with that shirt? Only Terry could pull it off I guess!
Posted by: cathead67 | September 28, 2007 12:13 PM
I gotta watch with the captioning on ... Tustin, Tustin, Tustin ... promise to remember that, Jen!
And I don't know what 23 means, either?
Oh, and another thing I find fascinating is we see Hurley on the TV in the previous episode, but find out why in the next one.

I think this episode is a LOST Classic. The first time I saw this and they zoomed in on the numbers at the end, I completely lost it (no pun intended). I remember calling up my mom, like "Did you see that?!"
That's the way to end an episode of this show.
Also, I didn't even pick up on the "You've opened the box..." thing until I saw it here. Man, I'm slow.

Here is a link for some pictures that were taken at the recent "Lost Symphony" in Honolulu. http://www.flickr.com/photos/hawaii/sets/72157602137098911/

Rodion, thanks for the link to the Lost/Honolulu Symphony concert photos. It looks like it was a blast! The Waikiki Shell is a fun outdoor concert venue, and the HSO is a terrific orchestra. We sometimes forget that among Lost's outstanding production values is Michael Giacchino's original music, which is played live for every episode--no canned tracks or synthesizers. I know everyone's upset about having to wait so long for new shows, but details like this take time.
BTW, I used to be the classical music critic for Honolulu's afternoon daily newspaper. Damn, I would have been at that concert and writing about it. Probably would have had to interview the narrator, Terry O'Quinn! And asked him about that damn pink shirt. ;-) Looks like he went back to neutrals for this concert, though.

wow, there are so many things referencing to the number 23. first of all, the 23rd Psalm, the Shepard Psalm, is the most quoted book in the bible, and it had a lot to do with Mr. Eko on Lost. Mostly, the number 23 refers to the 23 Enigma, which is a belief that all events are connected to the number 23. These events can be viewed as holy or demonic (23; 2/3=.666).

Did you all watch Chuck last night and heard what he said about Oceanic flight 815? haha
Posted by: Maria | October 2, 2007 12:42 PM
Maria: That's interesting. Can you elaborate?
Posted by: Janice | October 2, 2007 02:01 PM
He was remembering govt. secrets and one of them was on 815. 'oceanic flight 815 was shot down by...' then he goes on to something else.
