Outlaws
Sorry I am day late on this one. I've been laid up with a sore neck for the past week -- so much so that I saw a chiropractor for the first time. He was a nice guy, "aligned" me for a bit and sent me on my way. I feel a little better today and am going back on Saturday. Some people just hate chiropractors; the jury is still out for me.
Also, I saw a billboard for "Cain" on my way to work today and gave it the finger.
Anyway, let's roll:
00:01 -- I would have figured Sawyer's mom was a little more white trashy.
00:02 -- As a kid, I had a bed that had built in drawers and shelves. So, if my father had come home and shot my mom and then himself, I couldn't have hidden underneath the bed. So, ya know, I can't really relate to that scene.
00:05 -- "I thought I heard ... whispering." -- Sayid
00:06 -- When Sawyers walks in slow-mo, I imagine all the women watching stop breathing for a moment. Am I wrong?
00:07 -- "We both know you ain't the killing type." -- Hibbs. Well, you never know ...
00:08 -- I'd love to be able to refer to something as "The Tampa Job."
00:09 -- A note to all the women out there: tank tops = good.
00:10 -- How in the world did Kate and Jack not have sex? They practically did everything but in season one. I bet Kate is goooooood in bed. I'm rambling. And drooling. Let's move on.
00:11-- Now why is Charlie giving the girl he's in love with the cold shoulder?
00:12 -- Sawyer vs. the boar, man vs. beast -- it's like a show on FOX.
00:14 -- Daniel fun fact: I've never fired a gun.
00:15 -- "He catches me first because I'm heavy and I get cramps." -- Hurley. Yes, that's exactly why.
00:16 -- "What's wrong with Charlie?" -- Sayid. How much time you got?
00:18 -- Daniel fun fact: I never played "I Never."
00:21 -- "I never killed a man." -- Sawyer. Just a great scene.
00:24 -- Locke can tell a story, can't he?
00:25 -- Gee, that story has nothing to do with Sawyer's flashback and the boar that's haunting him and the voices he's hearing. Nothing at all.
00:27 -- Does this guy even look like a con man? Not that I know what con men look like.
00:28 -- Now for the best part of the episode ...
00:29 -- "To Sawyer, may he find whatever he's looking for at the bottom of a glass." -- Dr. Christian Shephard.
00:30 -- "Some people were just supposed to suffer." -- Dr. Christian Shephard. He's talking about all the Losties in a way, isn't he?
00:33 -- Just a phenomenal scene between Sawyer and Jack's dad. The interconnecting fates of our castaways really began in earnest there and this is far from the last time that Dr. Shephard would be heard from.
00:34 -- Look out Dr. Phil -- it's Dr. Sayid time.
00:35 -- Now, I didn't like Sawyer's baby boar act either, but leaving him alone in the jungle seems kind of harsh.
00:36 -- Sawyer's back to get the job done for real this time and you know how I know why (besides the fact that I already saw this episode)? Because it's raining.
00:37 -- "It'll come back around." -- Duckett.
00:39 -- Sawyer the Merciful.
00:41 -- "That's why the Sox will never win the Series." -- Jack
00:42 -- Sawyer could have done the nice thing there, but didn't. I said it once and I'll say it again: I did like it better when some people were just assholes.
I can't give this episode anything more than a B. It was solid, no doubt. The flashbacks were better than anything that went on on the island, though.
It still boggles my mind though how little the plot of "Lost" advanced during season one. The show took the whole first season to pretty much introduce us to the Losties, then spent the next two seasons giving us the show. It takes a great deal of patience (and confidence in the story you want to tell and the manner in which you're going to tell it) to pull that off.

Janelle Facts:
I have shot a gun (I am from North Dakota originally, I think it's a rule)
I used to hide between the bed and the wall.
I do not like Locke. I know, heresy, but I don't. There, I said it. I think he's full of shit. It wasn't very long ago that he was trying to get a phone sex woman to go to Australia with him and now he's some big tough spiritual guy. Nope, I think he's still a lost little boy inside who makes others (Boone, Sawyer) do the tough work that he can't face.
It makes sense that Sawyer's mom wasn't trashy -- they had enough money to make it worth scamming them. Just because he's from the south doesn't mean he is poor. Plus, Sawyer cleans up real nice, that has to come from somewhere.
Otherwise, Yeah, this ep doesn't move the plot along in so much as it tells us more about the players on the island.

Dr. Sayid. Hmm . . . I'd listen to him!
This show makes you realize what a crucial figure Christian Shepherd is starting to become. Will we see some more of him?
Locke rocks. Who cares if his story has nothing to with what's going on? He's just so good at telling it.
I can't believe you've never played "I Never"! I never got to drink much during that game when I used to play back in the day because I was really naive and I hadn't done much. And people would come up with such wild things sometimes. Yet, there were still people who drank almost every time. Some people are sick . . .
Posted by: cathead67 | September 14, 2007 07:11 AM
Oh, and I'm originally from Texas and now live in Georgia. Of course I have shot a gun! : )
Posted by: cathead67 | September 14, 2007 07:27 AM
i think in season 1, the story was just starting to get spooky, so there was no need for the plot to move any faster than what it did. initially, we were really caught up in who these people were, so it fits really. things werent as complicated, and thats saying a lot
janelle, i agree with you about Locke. he really got on my nerves. and, i find it so funny that everyone hates Michael for what he did on the show in order to save his son, but everyone still loves Locke, despite the fact that he has made more than a few follies, including blowing up the submarine, preventing escape from the island, and subsequently stymying any rescue for the losties. and all for his personal glory of recovering the use of his legs. more egregious, and pitiful, in my opinion.
Posted by: sarah | September 14, 2007 08:38 AM
Sarah,
I have to disagree with you about Locke's reasons for 'stymying' the Losties' rescue. I believe that, while Locke does act a little weird sometimes, his reasons for staying aren't purely for his own good. As others have said on this site, I think that Locke does know the secrets of the island, and that they benefit everyone...if I were a Lostie, I'm sure I would have been pissed at him too when he blew up the submarine, but I think we'll find that he knows what he was doing was truly best for everyone...let's hope so anyways
Posted by: Whitney | September 14, 2007 08:47 AM
I think we already know that the people coming to "rescue" them are going to be bad. At least that's what everyone's hinting. So I think Locke knows what he's doing.
Posted by: cathead67 | September 14, 2007 09:35 AM
so what about him leading Boone to his death? and the whole thing with not wanting to push the button anymore? i guess this is for the good of the island too?
Posted by: sarah | September 14, 2007 10:22 AM
Janelle, you crack me up! It is HERESY, though!
However, I'm on Team Locke. It seems pretty clear to me that he knows something about the island and is using (testing out, maybe) his "powers". But using them as a good thing (i.e., Boone's and Sawyer's cleansing, if you will.) Funny how he turned up at Kate and Sawyers camp just at the right time to refocus and clarify the situation. I'm fairly certain that Locke will emerge as an island leader of some sort in future seasons.

Janice Facts:
I've NEVER shot a gun. (Sorry, I'm from SoCal!)
I've NEVER been to the Mann's Chinese Theater (now that's heresy!)
I HAVE hid under my bed in a corner.
OK, question here... Didn't it seem to anyone that Christian Shephard was kinda pushing Sawyer a little, telling him to GO take care if his business (or something to that effect)? I thought so. It just bugged me a little.
Posted by: Janice | September 14, 2007 11:42 AM
Janice, I totally agree that Locke knows more about what is going on with the island, that something is leading him around (the whispering people, maybe). But he didn't know Ben was going to shoot him or that he'd live either, so I don't know if the connection is as deep as he thinks it is. Also, I'm not sold on what he did with Boone and Sawyer wasn't for his own edification, either.
But I think he's totally in it for himself and doesn't give a rats ass what happens to anyone else.
I know there are some Jack haters around, but Jack's motivation has been to protect everyone and get them off the island. How any of this plays into the flash forward remains to be seen.
Posted by: Janelle | September 14, 2007 11:50 AM
Wow Janelle, Sarah, I'm blown away here! You actually admitted to Daniel you don't like Locke. :) The only thing I could say is human nature is complicated. We are not cut and dry, the world around us influences are opinions and feelings and we change. This is especially true for the Losties. I see a lot of desperation in Locke. Asking the phone sex lady to be Helen, the thing with Boone and the hatch, blowing up the sub. I feel sorry for him a lot actually. And I have asked myself if I were in Michael's situation with a child would I really be any different, and I don't know honestly. I hate him for betraying the Losties, but I think I would do anything for my child if he was in danger. Still undecided there.
Good observation about Sawyer and his family Janelle. I know we shouldn't sterotype people just because of where they are from, but it seems like anyone I ever met from Texas has had a gun in their family! I am from LA and not superficial, not a vegetarian, nor have I had plastic surgery (yes they are real people, stop asking!) But I digress. All I can say is in a time where so many new shows air one episode and are never seen again, the fact that Lost was able to stay on to build the plot and show how great it is is pretty amazing.

I'm so glad to see that I am not the only person who has Locke on their "Most Loved" and "Most Hated" list at the same time.
Angel's Stats:
I HAVE shot a gun. (Grew up in Georgia)
I HAVE hidden under the bed. (I think my dad was crazier than Sawyer's)
I've never killed a man. (Although, if I had shot my ex instead of divorcing him I would have been paroled by now!)

Terry won!
Props to Terry O'Quinn for taking home the Best Supporting Actor award. Perhaps credit should go to HIM for the fact that we're arguing over whether Locke belongs on the Most Loved or Most Hated list. Great speech, too, about making more money baking cookies on Wisteria Lane, but ultimately preferring rolling around in mud and gore on the jungle floor.

Props to Terry O'Quinn for winning the Emmy. The fact that more than one of us are in a love-hate relationship with Locke is more proof he is a great actor.
Pleeeeeaaaasssse....Michael is the most horrid character on the show. The more I watch these episodes the more I remember how much I detest his arrogant, self righteous attitude. His actions, his snide looks, his whole personality is totally unredeeming. I may be irritated with a lot of the things Locke does, but he also makes me laugh and shows a real inner strength. He also has all the good lines.
Michael just makes me want to puke.
Posted by: Teresa lynn | September 18, 2007 08:11 PM
Oh, and thanks Daniel for posting the transcripts of the whispers. I hadn't seen that before. I wonder who those people are; are they alive or dead? I had never thought they were spirits before, but now after reading the transcripts I think maybe they are.
Posted by: Teresa lynn | September 18, 2007 08:13 PM
I have never hidden under the bed (I had a secret room in the back of my closet when I was a kid).
This episode reminded me why I don't like Michael. He's an annoying self-righteous jerk. The difference between him and Locke is that, well, Locke is much cooler. My feelings for Locke are complicated, but I think that's the whole point of his character. YAY to Terry for winning an Emmy, even though I thought Henry Gale deserved in more. Still I am happy he won.
