Top 5 "Lost" Characters (Not Named Locke or Henry Gale)
Now, I have excluded Locke and Henry from this list for two reasons: 1) They would obviously be the top two and 2) I am not ready to decide which of the two would get the top spot. It's the Sophie's Choice of "Lost."
Without further ado ...
5. Jin
Pretty solid ranking for a guy who doesn't speak English. No one on television says more without saying anything like he does. He is stoic, he is solid, he is consistent -- Jin is a rock with a heard of gold.
4. Juliet
I despise this woman with every fiber of my being and don't trust her no matter what -- what other character evokes so much emotion? Women hate her, men love her. She is cold and calculating and I have absolutely no idea whose side she is on ... still. That is the mark of a good character.
3. Dr. Christian Shephard
Mark my words: We have not heard the last of him. He ties into so many characters on the island, his grave was empty -- I'm not saying he is Jacob, but he's a factor in everything that is going on, I just feel it. Putting him this high is really just my faith in the role he will play down the road.
2. Desmond
First off, everything is cooler in a Scottish accent. Secondly, hell I don't know if I need s second thing. Does any "Lost" fan NOT love Desmond? He might be the only person on the island who's life got worse once he arrived there and that makes his journey to get off the island different from almost everyone else's. See ya in another life, brutha.
1. Sayid
Sayid is number one on my list for one reason and one reason only: he might be the only Lostie who actually asks the right questions. The reason why I can't include most of the other castaways on this list is because they act like idiots most of the time. Sayid is always on point and rarely does anything that makes me scream at the television in frustration. Plus, he bagged Shannon and made her somewhat tolerable as a result. Props for that.
Reasons why ____ didn't make the list:
Hurley -- He is a little too one-note for me.
Sawyer -- The nicknames are old. Please stop.
Kate -- Been held at gunpoint one too many times.
Jack -- Too holier than thou sometimes.
Sun -- Just barely missed the cut.
Claire -- Eh, too boring.
Michael -- "WALT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Walt -- "VINCENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Nikki/Paulo -- Um, where do I begin?
Rose/Bernard -- They were MIA for too long.
Eko, Boone, Libby, Ana Lucia -- RIP
Charlie -- LOL, right!

Excellent write up, Daniel, A+ !

Daniel,
I LOVE Juliet - I think the character is well written and Elizabeth Mitchell is an actress women can be proud of. And I'm a woman, too. She's strong and complex and beautiful - I think she's a good example for writers out there as a woman who can be as interesting as a male character.
Great list!

Wow, I totally agree with Desmond and Juliet.
Juliet drives me absolutely crazy with all her side-switching, but she really makes the show SO interesting because we never know what she's gonna do next!
Desmond story is so captivating to me...and Daniel makes a good point that he's one of the few who's life completely fell apart once he got to the island. I also have a feeling that Desmond will become more and more critical to the story as it progresses.
Also, I know it's been said here many times before but I absolutely love how good-tempered this community is! I'm so happy we all get along and aren't here to bash each other's opinions. You guys are the best!!

I am one of the few people out there, I think, who doesn't think Juliet is bad. I think she will do whatever she has to do to get off the island. She knows that if she sticks with the Others, she won't get off. She knows she can never trust Benry -- so her loyalties are probably leaning more to Jack and our Losties.
I don't agree that Desmond was any better off before he got to the island. He was rudderless -- hey, did the rudder fall off his sailboat?
I do like the rest of the list Daniel, although I'd still probably include Sawyer and Sun in my top five.
When will we do the top five best looking Lost characters with their shirts off?

No time like the present, Janelle!
TOP 5 LOST CHARACTERS WITHOUT SHIRTS:

Great list Daniel. I have to agree on all accounts. Especially about the Scottish Accents. I've been telling my aunt all along that Christian has something to do with this whole thing- she thinks that it's all merely a coincidence that he's connected with many of the Losties.
Have a great Day!
Amber
(actually I do have to disagree on one thing- I still get a kick out of Sawyer's Nicknames.)

I agree - the names and comments that Sawyer continues to come up with are still very entertaining to me. You'd think he'd be out of material by now but he's not.
Good list Daniel. It was nice to see another entry to the Diary.

Janice
I gotta go:
5/ Sayid
4/ Desmond --
3/ Jack -- his tats make it a little more interesting
2/ Sawyer -- something about his shoulders I don't like, they are a little sloping for me
1/ Jin -- the best overall packaging of the bunch

Oh, and forgot to add -- Stephanie you are completely right. I told one of my Lost-addicted friends that she needs to come join us here, but she doesn't like to comment on boards where everyone bashes another person's opinion or some flamer takes the board over. It isn't like that here, and I hope it stays that way once Season 4 starts.

Thanks for including Jin on the list, Daniel. As I've said before (on this blog and in Lost-related rants to my friends), Jin is WAY underrated as a character. Also, I agree with you about Sayid. After re-watching Seasons 1 and 2, I wonder why no one ever listens to Sayid, who is always so rational, wise, and pragmatic. Well, with the exception of the bamboo-under-the-fingernails thing...
I love Juliet, for obvious reasons--she has the best name in the world--though I disagree that she is evil. I think she is just trying to get back to her sister and get back at the people who betrayed her (and I'm talking about Henry here).

1. Sayid....all the reasons stated above, plus those beautiful brown eyes.
2. Sawyer....I think he is right behind Sayid in asking the right questions. It's just that the other guys never take him seriously. As cocky as he is, he has also proven himself caring and compassionate at times.
3. Desmond....mostly because of his accent, but also he has passion.
4. Richard...he has been on the Island forever. I don't think we know even a tenth of his story, but I think it is going to prove extremely relevant. I always sit up and take notice when he comes on the screen.
5. Juiet.... Strong, powerful, not afraid of anyone. I agree she sits on the fence, but I like that we don't actually know everything about where she stands.

Desmond is great but I don't trust him. Even after the whole Charlie is gonna die thing, he was still only looking out for his own or for penny. I wonder, why wasn't the vision of Penny talking w. Charlie part of his vision of Charlie drowning?

Charlie part of his vision of Charlie drowning? Or maybe it was and again that was the only reason for telling Charlie about the vision so he could die in order for Desmond to see Penny again.

Excellent List, i think i have to agree with you fully... except for the bagging shannon part.
Posted by: Jenn | September 13, 2007 04:52 AM
Well.......I have to disagree with most of your list this time. (And I'll even leave Sawyer out of it...no sense repeating myself) I agree about Jin 100%, I also agree about Sayid. But I have never been a big Desmond fan EXCEPT for the accent..I could listen to him talk for a long time. I like Juliet most of the time but I am wishy-washy on her. Christian is dead...TBTB have confirmed that many times. He still has a lot left to contribute...but only in flashbacks. Sun should be there because we saw in her flashback that she is tougher than we thought and has a dark side of her own. And I think Hurley may be a little unstable and could be interesting if so. Plus, we haven't even heard/seen a fraction of Danielle's story yet....you forgot about her.
Posted by: Angel | September 13, 2007 03:36 PM
Ohh, Angel, you are right, for the little screen time she gets, Danielle is one of my favorites. I rewatched the ep last night where Sayid meets her and realized she may have killed the rest of her party because they wanted to GET OFF the island, which she saw as a problem... I could be totally wrong about that, but I got a feeling.

Sayid deserves the top spot here (minus Locke and Ben, of course). Who else could snap someone's neck with their legs? I'll never be able to get that image out of my head. Sayid is my new best friend.
Posted by: cathead67 | September 14, 2007 07:14 AM
I'd have Danielle on there somewhere, but otherwise an excellent list!
Eko would also be either #1 or #2 on my list if he wasn't shamelessly and needlessly killed. :(
Posted by: Jay | September 18, 2007 12:25 PM
Aw, Mr. Eko. Yes, I miss him too.
Posted by: cathead67 | September 19, 2007 08:04 AM
my man Jack should always have number 1 on the list. Even if the writers had wanted to kill him in episode one season 1. Holier than thou, pfffffffffffffftt, not even close. I hate that he gets hooked on drugs in the flash forward though. Damn it, trying to do the right thing is alwyas harder.
