Deus Ex Machina

A couple of quick things:

-- I am so far behind on my TV watching, I might need to take a vacation day from work to catch up. I have watched literally nothing this week. I feel empty inside.

-- If you didn't watch "Pushing Daisies" last night, we can't be friends anymore. It's simply the best pilot of the new season and it's not even close.

-- It's October. "Lost" starts in February. Sigh ...

00:01 -- Is there any better feeling when watching "Lost" then realizing it's a Locke flashback episode?
Lost
00:02 -- "My story would bore you." -- Locke. Do you think that whole mousetrap story in the scene before was a metaphor for the rest of his flashback? Not too subtle, was it?

00:03 -- I think the trebuchet didn't work quite as Locke planned. (For the record, I spelled "trebuchet" correctly without looking it up)

00:04 -- "Then the island will tell us what to do!" -- Locke. I think even he would admit that sounds weird the first time he said it out loud.

00:06 -- You could do worse than Swoosie Kurtz for a mom. I mean this version of Swoosie was a bitch, but still.

00:07 -- And crazy.

00:08 -- I wouldn't be too quick to help out Sawyer if I was Jack. But now he's got me wondering, what would my Sawyer nickname be?

00:09 -- "Don't tell me what I can't do." -- Locke

00:10 -- My man crush on Boone is being tested here -- who quits on Locke?

00:11 --  "Theresa falls up the stairs; Theresa falls down the stairs." -- Boone. Um, what?

00:12 -- "This probably won't have a happy ending." -- Locke's P.I. Listen to him, John!!!

00:13 -- I'm not a fan of Locke with hair. Hair is like his Kryptonite. Locke is a bald man, period.

00:14 -- Fuck Anthony Cooper.

00:15 -- Locke gets Boone back with the program. My faith in Boone has been restored.

00:17 -- I love it when Sawyer asks for help -- because he can't do it.

00:19 -- So is that corpse they just found Eko's brother?

00:20 -- Man, it's almost painful to watch Locke go through this all over again.

00:22 -- "I think you should just shut up and relax." -- Jack to Sawyer. Amen, brutha.

00:23 -- "Jack wouldn't know the first thing about what's wrong with me." -- Locke

00:25 -- Fuck Anthony Cooper.

00:27 -- No, no Boone. Stay on the ground, don't go up there. Nothing good will come of it for you.

00:29 -- "Dude, looks like someone steamrolled Harry Potter." -- Hurley
Lost
00:31 -- For a spoiled little rich boy, Boone is quite the climber.

00:33 -- Big plane o'heroin. That ain't good.

00:34 -- Boone get out the damn plane!

00:35 -- "WE are the survivors of Flight 815" -- voice at the other end of the radio. And they were actually telling the truth.

00:36 -- Down goes Boone!

00:38 -- Oh Locke, I can't bare to watch.

00:39 -- "He said that was the only way you'd give it to him." -- Locke's mom.

00:41 -- Man, this is tough to watch.

00:42 -- Desmond, is that you?

Lost

I love that we're getting back to what make's "Lost" what it is. The hatch, the numbers -- I love it.

This episode is a solid A for me. Fantastic, heartwrenching, utterly painful flashback and the island stories were great too (Charlie? Who's Charlie?).

Interesting debate I had this week -- would you rather watch a show on DVD, being able to watch episodes whenever you wanted? Or do you like the once a week format? Me, I love having a week of build-up -- the anticipation of "Lost" (or "24" when it was good) is part of what makes the show what it is.

I could very easily burn through season one of "Lost" and write the diaries in bunches, but I don't. Even in re-runs, I love waiting a week, making a little event out of it -- isn't the term "appointment television"? It ain't the same in mini-marathon format.

Thoughts?

I'm DYING lately on the questions front (understandable since the show isn't even on the air). So if you're looking for an LDQA column, click here to send me a question. I don't care what it is about. In fact, I guarantee I will answer any question I am sent this week (within some reason, of course). But I will at least publish them all.

I kinda like the anticipation too, but sometimes it is fun to watch stuff back to back if it's really complicated. I did that with X-Files.

I agree this was a great episode. Any episode centered on Locke and that doesn't have Charlie in it is gold. Poor Locke. He was such a loser. Sure isn't anymore, is he? Now he is King of the island. And the hair? Please!

And I love reliving the moments when we heard from the Tailies and when the light came on in the hatch. Stellar tv!

Aw, poor Eko's brother. So sad. And totally Eko's fault, really. Guess he should've admitted he sinned and maybe the island wouldn't have killed him off.

This ep is really painful to watch. You know Boone's gonna get hurt, you yell at him not to go up, he does anyway -- I mean damn, grab a rope(vine), pull the plane down, don't climb up into a plane that's been hanging from the tree canopy for how long. Doesn't that just seem stupid, climbing in like that. My other question, why do Locke's legs quit working right? Oh, Random thought, the guy who play's Locke's dad was the baddie on L&O:SVU this week and his character's name was Cooper!!

This episode was hard to re-watch since I knew what the outcome would be with Locke’s dad. I enjoyed the interaction between Sawyer and Jack more this time because I appreciated the chance to laugh. And it was funny.

I caught up with Alias when it was in syndication on TNT. I was glad it was on 5 days a week because they often dropped a truckload of new info minutes before an episode ended. It was nice to get some answers the following day.

But I do enjoy looking forward to watching LOST each week. I’m not someone who would purposely wait until a show got on DVD to watch the entire season at one time.

One last thing – 30 Rock did refer to LOST last night. Alec Baldwin’s character was digitally placing Jerry Seinfeld in various NBC shows without Seinfeld’s knowledge. When he found out, Seinfeld said he liked LOST and asked if he could appear on it. Seinfeld also asked if LOST belonged to NBC. It was a real quick remark.

Where is everyone? Don't leave us! We may have several more months until the new shows come on, but we still can talk about the old ones!

That wasn't Eko's brother. It was just one of the gang members masquerading as a priest. Eko and Locke find his brother mid-Season 2, I believe.

Lisa - Do you mean the body in the plane or the body that fell out of the trees? Because the body in the plane is Eko's brother.

Janelle - Remember when Locke explained away Boone's death as being "a sacrifice the island demanded?" I thought Locke was just being a big jerk, but after rewatching this episode and seeing how his legs all of a sudden stopped working, I realized he may be right; the island healed Locke's paralysis at first, and forced it back in order to ensure Boone's death/sacrifice. Locke's paralysis always returns when the island needs something or wants to test his faith.

Still, I miss Boone. He really represents how most fans would react when thrown into the same situation. Plus he's a genius next to Paolo.

If you're watching "CHUCK"...under pressure from a government scientist, he spews a list of secrets that were downloaded into his brain and one of them was that he knew who brought down Oceanic 815! This gave me a chuckle--another NBC show referencing LOST.

Ryan's right about the paralysis. The plane needed to come down but the island returned Locke's paralysis to ensure that Boone NOT Locke went after it. The Island was protecting Locke....I feel like i just repeated something that everyone already knows...sigh. Is Feb here yet?

And snap!!! I missed "Pushing Daisies"!!!Damn it. I've miised every new show this season. I suck.

I agree, this episode was really hard to watch because I knew the outcome. I remember watching this episode the first time and I remember freaking out when the plane fell. Poor Boone. I definately miss him.. I don't miss his sister though.
I loved the storyline with Sawyer's headaches. I've always loved scenes with Jack and Sawyer.
I love Chuck and the LOST reference was awesome. I started to watch Pushing Daisies on Wednesday, but I got bored. Then on Friday I heard that it was awesome, so I decided to give it another chance since they reaired it Friday night, and boy am I glad I did. It's such a great show.

I just wanted to say that I missed Pushing Daisies, but then read what you wrote..so, I watched it! I loved it, very different and interesting. They have some great new shows this seasons, like Chuck and The Reaper. At least we have something to watch until February!!!

Ryan -- Thanks for the explaination! I just didn't see it that way before but it makes sense now. But still, it could all be coincidence about Locke's legs and Boone's death.

But again, one of the reasons I don't like Locke, he was willing to sacrifice someone else for his own ends -- doesn't that sound exactly like what his dad did to him?

Amen Janelle!
