Do No Harm
An actual IM conversation I had this morning:
Girl at work: did you watch private practice last night?
Me: ha
Me: man that was good
Me: you are funny
Girl at work: lol
Me: if I ever watch Private Practice, one of 3 things has happened
Me: I have been kidnapped by a foreign government that assumes I am in possession of some sort of intelligence that it needs to torture out of me
Me: I am dating the kind of girl I hate
Me: or I have given up on life and it's the last thing I watch as I swallow a bottle of pills
Me: so no
Me: I didnt watch Private Practice last night
Girl at work: lol, fair enough
Let's roll:
00:01 -- As Jack tends to Boone, I can't help but wonder, why is it in every scene involving a doctor working on a patient in critical condition, they always end up having to repeat something twice to someone too afraid to move? "SECOND DRAWER!!!"
00:02 -- Jack just did it again. "IF YOU WANT HIM TO LIVE, GET TO THE BEACH NOW!!!" By the way, I am sure there are worse medical conditions than "collapsed lung" but that one sure sounds like it would rank right up there. Though, from watching the movies and TV, all you have to do is stab someone in the chest and that whole thing just goes away fast. I am sure it works just that easy in real life, too.
00:03 -- Hard to imagine Jack has friends, let alone a best friend.
00:06 -- Matthew Fox sure acts like a good doctor. If I were critically injured, I'd take him over Hugh Laurie any day. Damn Brits are taking all our jobs, anyway.
00:07 -- Jack's fiancee gives a nice speech and all, but does that sound like a woman in love or just someone really grateful?
00:09 -- Kate can't even run without messing shit up.
00:11 -- If re-watching season one has taught me one thing above all else it's that Jin is the shit.
00:12 -- How many people know their blood type? I have no idea what mine is.
00:14 -- Sun comes through in the clutch with ... hell, what is that thing? But it will do the trick.
00:16 -- Jack and Sarah have about as much chemistry together as Hurley and Jin.
00:17 -- Everyone loves to bitch about Jack -- and at times he deserves it. But the man is more than capable of coming through when it counts. When he's on the level (something he wasn't much of in season 2) he takes charge better than anyone.
00:18 -- Why is Claire so scared to have her baby? Besides the fact that having a baby on that island must suck.
00:20 -- "John said not to tell about the hatch." -- Boone
00:22 -- Sayid makes Shannon tolerable and that is no small feat. He deserves to get some.
00:23 -- "I'm scared too." -- Kate. Really? You're scared? Cause I don't see you about to have a baby on Creepy Island. I see two hot guys falling all over you constantly. Claire is the one about to deliver a baby with only an idiot, a Korean guy and your dumb ass to help. She should be bloody petrified.
00:24 -- By the way, I totally missed the part where Sun was a nurse.
00:26 -- Really, Jack? You go to your dad for advice? Cause, I don't know him as well you, but I wouldn't ask him which way is up.
00:28 -- Jack is getting ready to take off Boone's leg using the cargo door. There is no possible way I could write that sentence and make it sound any more terrible than it is.
00:30 -- (nodding back and forth) -- Jin. I need to write Daniel Dae Kim a letter to apologize for so severely underrating his character. He is now CLEARLY the best character not named Locke or Henry Gale and it's really not even close anymore.
00:31 -- "Don't tell me what I can't do." -- Jack
00:31 -- Just kill him, Jack. Put him out of his misery please.
00:33 -- Jack is terrible at wedding speeches.
00:35 -- So now Boone knows he's going to die. I'm sorry, but I'd want to try and live. That's just me.
00:36 -- Even watching female actors act like they're giving birth makes me happy I am a guy.
00:37 -- Welcome to the island, Aaron.
00:38 -- R.I.P. Boone.
00:41 -- Just a heartbreaking few minutes. As much as I love dialog, you can tell a lot with none at all.
00:42 -- "To find John Locke." -- Jack
Forty-two minutes of television and two things happened: Boone died and Aaron was born. Now, that may not sound like much, but this episode was very indicative of season one. It wasn't always what they said, but how they said it.
This episode definitely gets a B+ from me and here is the best thing about it -- no Locke. Ending the week before and then NOT showing him this week was sheer brilliance. I am sure I must have been throwing a fit the first time around, but it's amazing storytelling to not include him after such a big thing happened. They did the same thing in season 3, but it didn't work as well.
And on a sad note, my mancrush on Boone is over. Sure he'll pop up one or 2 more times, but he and I will never cross paths again. I guess I can always rent "Rules of Attraction," but it's just not the same.
Lastly, begging you for questions for the LDQA column worked perfectly last week, so click here to send me a question. Same rules apply: you ask me a question, I'll answer it -- guaranteed.
PS -- "Heroes" sucks.

I usually say Locke rocks, but this week it's Jin! And Sun runs a close second. They're both very resourceful. And was Charlie freakin' annoying, even more than usual? And I'm sorry, Sayid doesn't make Shannon tolerable, he's just lonely, ok? Can't wait for Shannon to go.
RIP Boone and Daniel's mancrush. I can't say I really miss him other than the fact that he liked to follow Locke around.
And why did Sarah want to be married to Jack (obvious hotness aside)? As you pointed out, doesn't seem like there was passionate love there. The guy may be a brilliant doctor and can lead when needed, but he's no fun. She found that out, didn't she? So have we . . .

My blood type is A+. That means I'm perfect. :D

My blood type is O+. Seems some of us do know our blood type! : )

OK, this ep is even harder to watch than the last one. When Jack gets ready to try and use the cargo door to take the leg, I switched chanels there for a second (I do not to blood, gore or scary very well).
And where does Sun get all this medical knowledge? Eycalyptus for Shannon, now urchin spines for a needle ... was she a nurse before she got married or did we miss something there?
Locke is an ass for a/lying about how Boone got hurt and b/ taking off and heading back to his hatch c/ being a lying weasel. I really don't like him in this ep, and still unsure whether or not I hate him in general. Was it an accident? Yes. does that mean he isn't culpable for Boone's death? No.
I think Claire is scared because of what the psychic said, that she has to raise this baby, no one else. That and it's all on her -- no epidural, no episiotomy, no husband to help with the diaper and 4 a.m. feedings ... I'd be jumping in the ocean and swimming for Hawaii if I had to give birth outside of a hospital.
I am noticing a LOT of people screaming "Don't tell me what I can't do." Who else besides Locke and Jack? I think Claire, Sawyer and Kate have all said something pretty close to that.

No idea what my blood type is, either

David: yeah
haha
he was at s. elgin high school talking to kids
me: WTF?
David: with felix trinidada and roy jones jr
me: OK, who are they?
David: world class fighters
me: And Why are they at South Elgin High?
David: well, really i just think it was a boxing promotion-- everything's a boxing promotion but they did their best to give advice to kids

David: really nice fuckin guy
lots of bling
a quote machine

Um, O-. I think if you've ever donated blood, you know.
I think Jin is also underrated for sex appeal as well. He's hot, and I'd do him before any other guy on the island, including Jack or Sawyer.
Did they fire the writing crew on Heroes and hire a bunch of 6th graders? It's all just so Jr. High all of a sudden. Hiro's "Dear Ando" diary entries? WTF? The touchy-feely music as Claire flies off in New Boy's arms? Augh! One more episode like that and I stop watching. For real.
On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised to see Sark (from Alias) again, as Takezo Kensei.

So sad to see Boone die AGAIN! Sad episode really. Today fall finally fell in my area. Yoohoo! My Mom was O-, Dad was A+. My sis is A- and I'm O+. Funny how that worked. Too much info?? haha! I'm still hanging in there with Heros. Hopefully it will get better. I don't want to wish time away but geez, I can't wait until February!

So, so sad that you only gave this episode a B. This is by far my favorite episode of Season 1 as far as "Island Time" is concerned. I hate the flashbacks of Jack but the island story was heartbreaking.
I'm still giving Heroes more time.....lots of shows hit a slow spot.
Me=O+, Daughter=B-, Her Dad=O-
If you've ever donated blood or had a baby then chances are that you know your blood type.

I refuse to give up on Heroes. I still have faith. btw this is one of my least fav. episodes.

AB+ FTW!

Sawyer is SO HOT!!!
Posted by: Grace | October 11, 2007 08:11 PM
I agree with Betsy that it's Jin who's the hottest!
Posted by: cathead67 | October 12, 2007 05:54 AM
Nope, Sayid is SO the hottest on the island. Jin is up there though with Sawyer. Jack does absolutely nothing for me. I'd sooner do the polar bear...or smokey. (hmmmm, that's a weird thought, even by my standards.)

First off, this episode really wierded me out because of the Boone dying/Aaron being born thing. I still feel there is more to the coincidence of those significant acts happening same time/same episode. I can't put my finger on it but it still strikes me as strange when rewatching.
Secondly, I did the whole natural childbirth thing. No drugs, yadda yadda yadda. The difference is I was in a hospital surrounded with every convenience and medical personnel shoulder to shoulder (really!). I cannot imagine the fear Claire had. Yikes! I personally now recommend epidurals and lots of drugs...better living through modern chemistry. Just the fact that Aaron was O.K. is just a miracle. It was such a moment. This is my favorite episode.
Third, Sun has the Korean version of 'Modern Home Remedies' hidden away somewhere...
Lastly, A+

Oh yeah, the music on HEROES was nauseating when Claire and New Boy were flying. What is up with that? It was like 'Saved by the Bell' meets 'High School Musical' and HEROES got in the mix. Yuck!
Posted by: Diana | October 12, 2007 08:25 AM
Oh definitely I would recommend drugs when giving birth. When I was in labor with my son they gave me something that put me higher than a kite. I told my husband, oh yeah you would like this buzz! Unfortunately when the time came for my son to be born that high had worn off and I was totally lucid and experienced the whole pain thing. It's all worth it though when you see that precious baby. That was almost 30 years ago. I think I may be old now. hehehe.

Susan
You were a child bride and gave birth at the age of -- 14? right? That only makes you 44! (It's all about having the heart and attitude of a 30-year-old anyway).
Posted by: Janelle | October 12, 2007 10:41 AM
Me A+ Hubby O+. Obviously we are not the kind of people who get stuck on crap hole island. Everything I have ever seen DDK he just steals the scene. The Korean equvalent of Adam Baldwin. Under rated but steals everything he is in.
And I need to get this off my chest. Daniel the way you hate Charlie, is the way I hate Kate and Sawyer. Together or apart they are the human equvalent of a dentist drill. Kate screws everything up and whines (she can't realistically go back, she is a felon!) and Sawyer just annoys me and needs bathing. I'd be hanging with Sayid and Hurley. We'd form our own little click where we would fix things, eat cheese puffs and kill people with our legs or a VW bus, whatever was handy. Our own little "loop".

I watched this ep. thinking "there's not ONE woman on the island who's already had a baby and could help?" How is Claire going to teach herself to nurse Aaron?
I think I'd hang with Sayid and Hurley too. Much more fun. Maybe a little Jack on the side. Kate and Sawyer are a little too cracker for me. (Can I say that?)
It's so nice the way women bust out our birth stories at the drop of anything. What does Daniel think?
Posted by: Polly M. | October 12, 2007 11:57 AM
Well I am B+ and I only know because in high school I tried to give blood to get of some classes and they told me I didn't have enough iron and didn't weigh enough. Never tried again.
I remember when I first watched this ep and thought Jack and Sara as a couple was just not believable. But I did like Jack and I would want him to be my Dr if I was stranded on a scary island. He's rather comforting that way.
P.S. Isn't Private Practice that Grey's Anatomy spin off? Yeah, sorry, don't watch either one. I did tivo Pushing Daisies but haven't been able to see it yet. Is it January yet? Sigh.

Janelle, Hugs!! Yep age is just a number. You are as young as you feel. BTW, my grandmother got married at 13 and my grandfather was 15. That was the early 1900's. Sheesh! hahaha!
