The Greater Good

Sorry I am a day late on this one. After dealing with a pinched nerve in my neck for a month, I "took something" for a pulled muscle in my calf and I had a bad reaction yesterday that left me a little out of it. Kids, don't do drugs. Unless you're drinking too. Then it's ok.

I am so far behind on my TV, I still haven't even watched this week's "Heroes" yet. The only shows I am caught up on are "Prison Break," "Chuck" and "Dirty Sexy Money" and I am enjoying all three. Particularly "PB" -- I have no idea how they can still make that show interesting, but they're doing it.

And again, begging you for questions for the LDQA column worked perfectly last week, so click here to send me a question. Same rules apply: you ask me a question, I'll answer it -- guaranteed.

Let's roll:

00:02 -- Shannon is sitting beside Boone's body. I don't doubt that she's sad Boone's dead, but part of it to me feels like she's feeling as sad as someone should feel when their brother dies, not as sad as she actually feels.

00:03 -- The CIA is trying to get Sayid to help them stop a terrorist attack because they know where Nadia is. I don't know -- I would think if Sayid wanted to find Nadia, he could do it himself.

00:05 -- Kate is tracking Locke, presumably to get to him before Jack does -- or just to find Jack. I never bought Kate's ability to track people in the jungle.

00:06 -- Jack tells Kate how he thinks Locke is responsible for Boone's death -- which he is, but come on. He's Locke.

00:07 -- R.I.P. Boone, again.

00:08 -- Locke tries to explain to everyone how Boone died, leaving out that one crucial fact -- the hatch. Oh and how the island told him about the plane.

00:09 -- Jack isn't taking Boone dying too well, is he?

00:11 -- Sayid immediately makes a new terrorist friend, who is actually an old friend. He works quickly.

00:12 -- And Sayid also immediately impresses his new friends by finding and disabling a bug in their apartment. How convenient.

00:14 -- Note to Charlie: If you like a girl, don't call her son Turniphead.

00:15 -- "Storm coming." -- Locke. I'd like to say that one time, and, maybe mean it.

00:17 -- "John Locke killed my brother. Will you do something about that? -- Shannon. OH NO SHE DIDN'T!!!

00:18 -- Now Kate drugged Jack to get him to sleep.

00:19 -- Sayid is grilling Locke about Boone, the plane, and hunting for boar -- the questions he usually asks before he removes a man's fingernails.

00:21 -- Sayid is working his friend for information, and Essam tells him he's having second thoughts about the whole "blowing himself up" thing.

00:23 -- Now the CIA is threatening to imprison Sayid if he backs out. Nice.

00:24 -- Hurley just tried to sing Aaron to sleep. That kid is f'ed for life now.

00:25 -- Lying to Sayid seems like an exercise in futility.

00:26 -- Locke just told Sayid that he was the one that knocked out and destroyed the transceiver. Not the move I would have made.

00:27 -- As expected, Sayid is not taking the news well.

00:28 -- Talking your friend into killing himself and a few hundred innocent people isn't easy.

00:29 -- "Sayid, will you do this with me?" -- Essam. Um, yeah, about that. I have this thing I have to go to that day...

00:30 -- Beware of any woman who asks you to kill the guy she thinks killed her brother. She's bad news.

00:32 -- Sawyer is going to make a great dad someday.

00:33 -- Shannon took the key to the gun case off of Jack so that she can go and kill Locke. It's a little weird that it's raining where Shannon is, but not on the beach. But hey, any way I can get Shannon soaking wet -- I'll take it.

00:34 -- "It's time." -- Haddad. Probably the last words a suicide bomber wants to hear, other than, "Yeah about those virgins we promises you ..."

00:37 -- I think Essam overreacted, just a bit.

00:38 -- Shannon's attempt to kill Locke failed because of Sayid. I think they're broken up now.

00:39 -- The choice between hearing a baby cry and Sawyer reading about cars is actually closer for me than you might guess.

00:41 -- Think Sayid regrets changing his flight? We need to add him to the list of people whose lives are worse on the island than off.

00:42 -- "And now you're going to take me to the hatch." -- Sayid

A good episode, yes, but not a lot really happened, especially for one so close to the finale. I always have mixed feelings about episodes I enjoy while watching, but then feel disappointed by when they are over. I think, at the time, this episode might have pissed me off a bit.

I give it a B, mostly because of the scenes between Locke and Sayid. Strangely enough, I am starting to realize that "Lost," for all its many characters, is best when only two people are in a scene, just talking. The more the merrier does not apply here. And, of course, it always helps when one of those people is Locke.

Really? You still find Prison Break interesting? I'm finding it hard to swallow that all these characters ended up in the same squalid prison, even if there's some big conspiracy behind it. I am tiring of the grand conspiracy.

I don't think it's Sarah's head. Do you? (Does this count as a question for the Q&A?)

I know Locke lied and all, but can I just say that I hate Shannon? I mean even more than before. Love John and Sayid together almost as much as John and Henry. The fact that John is man enough to admit that he knocked Sayid out is great. He can be such a wus about some things (dear old dad), but mostly he's pretty tough.

And is Sayid's life on the island really worse? It's debatable. He wants to get off the island badly only because of Nadia, but is she really in California? Does he really have more of a life off the island? The flashbacks don't seem to suggest that. We shall see in flash forwards I guess, if he gets off the island.

This is the ONE episode from the first season that I never saw, and finally watched it (a week or so ago). I think Shannon is truly pissed about her brother, or she wouldn't be going after a gun. I think I like her a lot better after Boone dies, because she has to take care of herself for the first time in her life, vs. letting someone else do all the work. She had her "growing up" moment here, which is why she's doomed to die soon.

As far as Sayid finding Nadya -- I think that if a person really wants to hide, they can. And, since she managed to get out of Iraq and into the US, she probably has some state department friends helping her on that (thus why the CIA knows where she is). Also, watching this, I think I need to go see Rendition this weekend.

Again, Locke has complete culpability in Boone's death and he still isn't accepting the responsilblity -- he chose to let someone die for his own ends and that bothers the heck out of me.

And Susan, if you are checking in, please keep posting!

But what if it wasn't for his own ends? What if it was the sacrifice the island required? Boone had served his purpose as far as the island was concerned. I'm not saying Locke is innocent, but I think there was a lot more going on than his own selfishness.

I agree with you CATHEAD, Locke needed a sacrifice for the islands sake but I don't think that he should have choosen Boone. I don't like it but I understand it. Pretty sad.

Speaking of Boone: I got to see his tushy on TELL ME YOU LOVE ME, the other day. TimeS like that I would have loved LOST to be on HBO so that I also see Sawyers tushy!!! RIGHT LADIES?!

I guess I get caught in that "sacrifice the island required." According to who? How DOES Locke know that the island required it to be Boone? he couldn't have made himself that sacrifice? Did the person who died have to fall from beechcraft to please the island? if Locke would have gone after the plane himself, would his legs still have given out? I don't like the situational ethics of Locke choosing who lives or dies. Is he the black or the white, the evil or the good, the antagonist or the protagonist? He's the man of faith, but is it misplaced faith? The island may be inherently evil, we don't know that yet.

Janelle: Very nicely put, dear. Locke, Rose, and Walt are the ones closest to the island, but I think Locke has taken it upon himself to decide "What's the What"! And you know, I have a feeling that Danielle also has a connection to the island, we just don't know it yet.

Janice,

I caught Boone on Tell Me You Love Me. My television screen almost burst into flames watching that show. Nice!

I agree with Janelle's comments about Locke. He started bugging me during the last part of season one and continue's to this day. Not knowing if he is on the side of good or evil makes it even more frustrating. I feel the same way about Michael, only more so.
