LDQA -- 2/28

Friends don't let friends blog angry.

That's what my friend Chris told me earlier this week and he's right. I was in a bad mood when I watched "Lost" and I don't think it affected my opinion of the show (it wasn't that good no matter what mood I was in) but it did affect my ability to write about it. I left things out I probably should have mentioned and didn't really bring much to the table -- though, as you'll see now, I had a lot to offer.

So that was my bad. Let's forget about it and move on ...

Q: Does anyone remember that Claire is Jack’s half sister??? So that would make Aaron Jack’s nephew. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t want to see him? Or wouldn’t he want to see him if he was family? -- Rebecca

A: Among my regrets from last week's Diary is not making some mention of this. Yes, obviously we know that Jack and Claire are half-siblings. And yes, it is conceivable, maybe even probable, that Jack has learned that by the time last week's flashforward takes place. I didn't mention it because we don't know what Jack has learned at that point, so it felt fruitless to guess. Here is what feels important to me ...

Q: I truly enjoy reading your diary every week, and have to admit, I wasn't a fan of "Lost," well never really watched it, until about 2 months ago.  I rented all 3 seasons and sat in my house for a week catching up to be ready for season 4.  The only thing I am "Lost" about in this weeks' diary is when you talk about the eight survivors becoming the Oceanic 6???  I am a little confused by that, because when was it ever claimed there were only 8 survivors, when we know there were well over that #???  Just a question.  Keep up the great work, and me personally, I think Kate is passing off Aaron as her own, she's never been one for honesty, and something makes me think she never will be. -- Sean

A: This question touches on the two big points for me from last week's episode -- and I think one helps us explain the other. So here goes ...

On the witness stand, Jack explains that eight people survived the crash. For reasons we do not know yet, that is the story him and the rest of the Oceanic 6 are telling. Now, since we know they are the Oceanic 6, and he says eight survived, that means two people survived the crash, but didn't make it off the island (Remember, this is Jack's cover story, not what really happened -- obviously). The question is, if six people got off the island, why make up a cover story that says eight survived? What happened to create the need for the extra two people to be involved at all?

And this is where Aaron comes in. I am of the belief that Kate is not passing off Aaron as her own -- but as Claire's child. There are several reasons why I think this:

1. Claire could easily be one of the two "extra people" in the cover story. You have to explain Aaron somehow. You say Claire survived the crash, but barely and gave birth to Aaron, dying in childbirth. Not saying this is the best story ever, but it is a good explanation for one of the two "extra people."

2. I think this story also explains why Kate's lawyer would want to bring in Aaron as a witness. Sure, she has a son -- whoopty doo. But, if Kate adopted an orphan child whose mom died in the most famous plane crash survival story of all-time (and she is also one of those survivors) doesn't that paint Kate in an extraordinary light? Now granted, would they really give a child to a woman up on all those criminal charges? But she got off so easily, I would think they could explain that away too.

3. Kate referred to Aaron as her son, and Kate's mom referred to him as his grandson --- proof, to some, that Kate is passing Aaron off as hers. Please. Was she supposed to call him "my adopted son"? This isn't "The Royal Tenenbaums" we're talking about here. No one talks like that.

4. Now, skewed timeline theories aside, how would Kate explain Aaron as being hers? She wasn't pregnant when the plane went down -- surely the Marshall would have noted in her file if she was. There are definitely ways you can explain she's passing off Aaron as hers, but it makes more sense to me, with what we know right now, that she tells people he's Claire's.

(Whew. Hope that all makes sense...)

Q: Will Michael be Ben's man on the boat? -- Ryan

A: Seems like a good way to re-introduce him, but I can't see why he would do it -- or how. My guess is it isn't him.

Q: You mentioned your belief that Angelina’s hotness did not outweigh her craziness and I just had to send you this (less than 1 minute) clip from "How I Met Your Mother." In it the character Barney explains the “hot-crazy scale”, complete with visual aids.  Thought you might like a point of reference for my LDQA query. Now for my question.  Where do the ladies of LOST fall on the hot-crazy scale?  Kate? Juliet? Sun? Danielle?  And do we need a separate scale for Claire, Shannon and Ana Lucia?  The hot-annoying scale, perhaps? -- Jill http://youtube.com/watch?v=kYrZSjpiIK4

A: Two things first -- 1) I never knew about this before I got this email and 2) I love that it came from a girl. Awesome. But seriously, I don't think any of these women's hotness overcome their craziness or annoyingness. Sun might come the closest and Danielle would certainly fail over the charts. But all of the ladies have issues. Though, who among us doesn't?

Q: Could it be possible that Miles is Ben's "man on the boat" and that the conversation Miles & Ben had together contained some secret coded messages?  Is something big going to happen in a week when Ben is supposed to pay Miles the 3.2 mill? -- Susan

A: I love this idea, but they already used the "speaking in code" bit once already. Twice would be a bit lame.

Q: This you may not have the answer to. It's more to vent really... I want to know why it is that I can sit at work for hours with nothing to do, but the SECOND I go on line to read your diary is when people won't stop calling or asking me to do stuff. It's just not right I tell you! -- Hannah

A: Those bastards.

Q: Do you read all the comments that are posted after you post the episode blog? How do you feel about people posting SPOILERS in the comment section? -- Jodie

A: I do read all the comments usually, but I have to admit this is the first week I ever fell behind. Usually most of the comments go to TMZ, but this week thelostdiary.com blew up a bit and I couldn't keep up. Fine work by you guys, I say. Fine work.

Q: Any suggestions on how to explain LOST in a way that doesn't make me sound legally mad?  Every time I start telling someone about it who has never seen the show I have to keep stopping myself because I think I sound crazy!  Black killer smoke, polar bears in the jungle, Ben... -- Matt

A: I tried to come with a clever way to answer this question -- maybe some sort of "Lost" for newbies guide or something. But then I realized something when I read your question again -- why are you even talking to people who don't watch "Lost"?

Q: Do we have any idea if Kate's trial was before Dr. Jack Shepard went crazy after he was rescued or post-lumberjack beard Jack? I'm actually leaning towards post-crazy beard. Aaron is old enough to say "mommy" when she picks him up at the end but "current" time on the island is only a little over a month so he should still be a new born on the island. He seems to have aged quite a bit. The end credits called listed Aaron as "Two Year Old Aaron".

Hey Daniel-
I love The Lost Diary!

I have a theory that Christian Shephard is Jacob. I think all the people on the island are connected to him in one way or another. He was dead in his coffin when the plane crashed but the island does mysterious things. Look what it did for Locke....the glimpse of Jacob when Hurley stumbled upon the cabin looked a lot like him.--Kathrin

Your anger kinda set a mood for the week's comments. People can get downright nasty with each other!

Love your answer to Matt... "why are you even talking to people who don't watch Lost?" ...when he asked how to explain the show to non-viewers without sounding crazy. Love it! Always a pleasure to read your comments, Daniel. Thanks!

They have been on the island for around 100 days, not one month.

storm - i think that th trial happens before jack loses it. last week someone posted that the article that jack read in last season's finale was dated in 2007. currently, on the island, it is 2004 and it's already been approximately 100 days. 100 days in 3 seasons, with just 2 1/2 seasons left leads me to believe that they get off the island in 2005. if that's true, and the time difference isn't so drastic, it makes sense that the trial would happen in 2006, making aaron 2. leaving several months before jack encounters the article in 2007.
kat - i don't think that christian IS jacob. remember when they showed the glimpse of jacob last season he looked like he had a beard and was wearing a moses robe? then this season he was portrayed by the actor that plays christian. i think that jacob just inhabits human bodies, and he's more of a spirit than anything else (i mean, his cabin disappears and reappears on different parts of the island, why can't he inhabit different bodies of people who have died?) it really doesn't make sense to me that, since jacob was present on the island long before the crash, he would be christian shepherd.

acctually, would it be 2005 on the island by now? 100 or so days past sept. 22, 2004 - the day of the crash?

ok, actually, i just counted, and 100 days from the crash would be dec. 31, 2004. making it 2005 by tonight's episode (or very soon thereafter).

"Q: Will Michael be Ben's man on the boat? -- Ryan

A: Seems like a good way to re-introduce him, but I can't see why he would do it -- or how. My guess is it isn't him."

if Michael was willing to kill and kipnap under Ben's will, you don't think that he could be Ben's man on the boat??

my only comment on michael being the man on ben's boat is that it seems too easy. we all know he's coming back to the show. if he came back in that way, we would all be saying "i knew it!" and part of the beauty of this show is not knowing.
i'm hoping it's not michael. cause at this point, it would be as if the writers aren't trying.

michael kidnapped and killed to get to walt and to get the boat. once he had those things, i also don't see why he would continue to spy for ben. i think he may have encountered the boat, but i don't think he's ben's spy. i think the people on the boat would be very skeptical and careful around someone around who they just ran into in the ocean (on a fishing boat, no less). i think that ben's "man on the boat" will be someone who has been involved in the mission the entire time. that way the person has time to establish trust and can find out pretty much anything ben wants to know. i think that rules out michael.

Just had a thought based on the last few comments about Michael. What if he did run into the freighter while leaving the island, and they picked him up with the promise of getting him home, but, because "rescuing you and your people, I can't say that is our primary objective," they have been keeping him and Walt on the freighter!

So Michael's return is as a "prisoner" of the freighters. Further helping to prove Ben's theory that they are bad news and want to kill everyone on the Island.

thank you again daniel for hosting this blog. i like your explaination of royalspeak vs. everyday language.

Wow! I know you haven't seen the new episode yet, but I think that it definitely made up for the last two episodes and then some. They are really building up for the last 4 shows.

Call me crazy and sadistic, but here is my thoughts on Aaron. Jack or Kate had a hand in Claire's death somehow. Jack's attitude toward the kid would be explained by one of two things. He accidentally let Claire die somehow and feels responsible OR he thinks it is sick and twisted that Kate is passing off Aaron as her own. Maybe Kate killed Claire, or had a hand in her death in a botched escape from Dictator-John Locke-turned-Jim-Jones'-put-on-the-robe-and-drink the-kool-aid-compound.

Yes, No, Maybe?

Oh my gosh!!! Great episode. Excellent! Had to post... it's mid-episode on the west coast by now, so I know I'm not spoiling anything. Can't wait for Daniel's comments tomorrow!

I think the best thing about last week's Eggtown episode was the song "Xanadu" playing in the background in that scene with Sawyer, Kate and Hurley-I loved that musical when I was a kid, about the man who falls in love with a fantasy muse figure and skates thru a wall at one point in the movie into a another dimension to go after her...I think it was very significant and not an accident they played that song during the Sawyer/Kate scene--it's like on Lost they're in some kind of different dimension, time and space. (Especially after watching tonight's episode with Desmond and Penny, very Xanadu...)
Yea, I know Xanadu was panned by the critics, (but as a starry eyed 11-year-old I could of cared less, I loved the movie) but if you really watch it, and especially compare some of the themes and things that happen in Lost, there's a lot of meaning in the movie and some things that Lost and Xanadu have in common...really....

I have decided that I'm naming my first child desmond. I'm going to repeat this post when daniel does his recap for this week. so don't yell at me when you see this again. I won't give anything away, but for the first time in LOST history I cried. Not like a little baby, but I did tear up and go, "sigh" with a tear. My sister (we watch it together every week and she just doesn't get it) said that I'm lame but I just feel that this was one of my top 5 episodes ever. LOST IS BACK! hugs and kisses to all the regulars, this is by far the best LOST blog out there.

I cannot WAIT to read this blog tomorrow. I love Desmond...... This episode blew me away!

it was a much better show tonight. i love all the time travel things, like the old stories behind The Time Machine and A Winkle in Time. i hope faraday can loosen his tie a little in the future...

I have to post, even though the recap for "The constant" isn't up yet, just to say that I think this is my all-time favorite episode of Lost. I LOVE Desmond, so it was fantastic to have an episode devoted to him, and aside from the wonderful Desmond'ness of this episode, it was such a tasty treat of insight and information. We learned a lot more about the time anomalies of the island and how they affect people and reality; we learned what's wrong with Daniel Farraday and the origin of his brain/memory problems; we got tantalizing glimpses into the world of the freighter people; and we got to see Penny & Des reunited at last. I can't wait to read the recap and read peoples' comments, and this is one episode I'll definitely be re-watching!

Hi Daniel. I am a big fan of your diary

Just wanted to comment on one thing:

I don't know why put I could not stop laughing for 10 minutes straight when Jack answered the phone, and Jack said "Hello?", and Sayid said "Hi Jack, it's Sayid".

I don't know if it was the way Jack was standing around, acting like he was waiting for the phone to ring like it was "the next day", and waiting for Sayid to call and talk him out on another date. Or just the absurdity of Sayid saying hi to Jack on the phone.

Anyone else laugh at that?

About Michael being the man on the boat. If he just accidentally ran into the freighter and they take him and Walt on board, how would he know how to get in touch with Ben?

Awesome episode last night! I can't wait to watch it again with hubby since he didn't get to see it. My only complaint about the episode...No Sawyer! :-P

I think that the extra 2 people are Michael and Walt. They got off the island but not with the Oceanic 6.

Kelly, I doubt anyone laughed at that, because it's not funny! DUH!

*I* thought it was funny, Kelly. :)

(Not 10-mintues-of-laughing-Funny, but funny nonetheless.)

I know we're jumping the gun talking about The Constant in this comments section, but to me, it seemed like the Ben's "man on the boat" has to be a person who knows and likes the Losties, because whoever it is opened the sickbay door last night for Sayid and Desmond to get out.

I realize that it could be anyone, but it also seems like it's someone they all know. Thinking back, who else fits that bill besides Michael or Walt? I don't know for sure, I'm just saying.

I'm confused on one point of last night's episode, but this seems to be a constant thread when I try and wrap my mind around time travel.

If '96 Desmond encountered '96 Faraday, wouldn't '04 Faraday know and recognize '04 Desmond? Wouldn't he be looking out for him, to see if what '96 Desmond said was true? Also, wouldn't '04 Faraday KNOW that '04 Desmond was going to suffer "the side effects" on the return copter trip because he witnessed the effects in '96?

I LOVED this episode, but I always have such a hard time grasping time travel.

-Gina

Thank God there's a place for people who have recognized the genius of this show's writing to get together and share ideas. I agree that Michael being the man on the boat is kind of obvious and may be interpreted as the writers 'mailing in' a plot point, but you know they'd have a twist if it is what happens. I'm wondering if perhaps Michael and Walt did run into the freighter, and Walt was killed? I've been thinking Walt may be dead since he appeared to Locke. That may lead Michael to want to exact revenge on whoever killed him. Just wondering.
I love the Lost Diary!

Lost Sole

"The Constant" was an absolutley phenomenal episode. I can't wait to watch it again. Anyway, the "side effects" explain a lot more about the island and it's abilities. Faraday not remembering the '96 Desmond explains why Faraday's co-worker was helping him with his memory skills with that deck of cards. He remembered two out of three. She said he is making progress. Thank god Faraday saved Desmonds life. He is such a huge part of this show. After all he may have saved the island by turning that key. And his Penelope was the last outsider to see my favorite ,Charlie, alive. Charlie's a hero!!! As for the Kate and Aaron question mark. I can't even touch that one. There are so many possiblities...I just want answers!!!

Ok I think this episode scored a 10 on the weird s#)t meter. I love reading the reviews on friday morning. I am going to go through a severe depression when this is finally over (similar to the one I went thru when the OJ trial ended) I'm not so sure that Aaron is really Claires Aaron, I still have this feeling that its Sawyers kid, and that Kate really is pregnant, and pays homage to Claires Aaron...but then again...when Claire was pregnant before she left Australia, didnt the psychic tell her the child she was bearing would "save the world", that's why she needed to keep it, and leave Australia? I am still not sure what is going on with Jack, and I am way more in love with him than Sawyer...something about the "doctor come rescue me" thing. He is already starting to become disconnected with reality, and is showing small signs of mental breakdown (that's what an island without the tropical drinks will do to you.)
I hope the writers arent going to rush new episodes due to the strike, and not put a lot of thought into what they are doing.

OMG!!! My head is literally ready to explode! I am all giddy inside!! ha!

I have been a LOST fan since the beginning, along with my hubby. LOVE IT. I stumbled upon Daniel's blog at the beginning of this season, and I love it too! Sooo much information from all of you fans. It is very helpful to get other people's insight and opinions because (a) the show has so many twists and turns it can be overwhelming for even an old timer like me; and, (b) someone will bring up something that I have totally forgotten. I LOVE how the names of the characters add to the mystery of everything. Excellent writing, WAY BETTER than going to the movies, and amazingly, THE BEST TV SHOW EVER!!!! Thanks Daniel for the blog and to everyone else who posts!

I think Claire has got to be alive on the island, and somehow Kate had Aaron in her possession when the decision "of stay on the island forever, or get off the island and forget about everyone else forever" was made...Kind of like that movie with Meg Ryan and Denzel Washington and Matt Damon from years ago where they left Meg Ryan alive in the dessert during Dessert Storm - and lied to everyone that she was dead.

remember when Faraday said to Desmond "you can't change the future"...what if this is all about changing the past???

Kate is clearly passing off Aaron as her own son, trying to use him and her "mother" status to help herself or to cover up what really went on on the island. I think Claire is most likely going to end up as one of the two survivors who doesn't make it off the island, so Kate takes Aaron as her own. Since we already know that for some reason the "Oceanic 6" have made up a story about the crash and it's survivors, it makes sense that the lie would continue and somehow incorporate Kate and the baby. Also, since the idea that time on the island is not the same as time off the island, maybe that explains the aging of the baby into a toddler.

At the end of the episode, did Penny aay "I've been looking for you for three years.... since I got the call from Charlie..."

Does this mean that in normal Penny-time, it's been three years since Charlie called and then died?

I think that Sayid is Ben's man on the boat. When Ben said he had someone on the boat, he was referring to the fact that he knew Sayid would soon be on the boat. So really Ben didn't lie.

Does that make sense to anyone?

I love this show and have watched it faithfully and just heard about this website and after checking it out, I gotta say you all are great and I love the theories everyone has. It is interesting to try and figure it all out and all the characters of the show are great, not to mention Sawyer is just hot!!!!! Got to get back to reading more on it all. Thanks!!!

This is off the episode, but need current thoughts - on Hurley watching the Xanadu DVD in teh Eggtown episode. Remember? At first I thought it was a quirky movie reference, but think of the poem, Xanadu, that talks of Kubla Khan...

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.

and this commentary on the poem in wiki...

When he declared himself emperor the historical Kublai claimed he had the Mandate of Heaven, a traditional Chinese concept of rule by divine permission, and therefore gained absolute control over an entire nation. Between warring and distributing the wealth his grandfather Genghis Khan had won, Kublai spent his summers in Xandu (better known now as Shangdu, or Xanadu) and had his subjects build him a home suitable for a son of God.

Remember how John Locke had declared himself the caretaker of the island? This is now his Xanadu, and he is the new "King of the Island"

There is also a website xanadu.com that is a computer software project....

PROJECT XANADU MISSION STATEMENT: DEEP INTERCONNECTION, INTERCOMPARISON AND RE-USE

And then I saw this news post in my googling, Olivia Newton John starred in the movie Xanadu, right? Do you remember that her long time boyfriend was famously lost at sea a few years ago...? I'm just saying... (wink)

There are just too many Xanadu offshoots to explore, but I thought it an interesting side line...

QUESTIONS! Ok- I can't refer to any of the science crap- but here's my questioning... Did anyone notice that Keamy's tattoos? I have been on pain medication, but I swear one of them looked like the Dharma Swan...not the abstract one, but the other. AND- we all know what kind of badass Sayid is...so does anyone not think it's strange he's being rather cooperative with the freighters? Oh, and the door being opened...I'm thinking it's the lawnmower man because it would be too predictable to have Mike there when you actually need him.

The biggest question that Daniel has not answered is:

Why did Penny tell Charlie that she knew nothing about a boat "Boat, what Boat?", BUT Minkowsky tells Desmond that Penelope Widmore (he knows her full name) has been calling the boat constantly but they have been Instructed not to answer?!!

AND if Penny has been calling the boat, and now she knows that Desmond is now ON the boat, why doesn't she just tell him to wait there and she'll get on a Helicopter and go right over there???

Theory on Kate's Aaron...maybe he is, in fact, her child with Sawyer, but she's passing him off as Claire's son who's been placed in her care. Possibly to cover up what really happened to Claire & Aaron. Might also be her cover for keeping the truth about his birth from Sawyer. Maybe somehow Jack knows the truth, which would explain his avoiding the child. Am I making any sense? I'm relatively new to Lost, but I'm sooo hooked & fascinated by its ingenuity!!!

Re: Lost and loving it-I have thought the same thing about kate having sawyer's baby and calling it Aaron to hide from Sawyer. I think that the Claire/Jack connection is to easy. I'm right there with you on that one!

Daniel -
Q: Since TMZ is already on the air, have you discussed having a LOST recap on Friday's show? You did such a good job hosting a few weeks ago, but I was a bit disappointed as I thought for sure you'd give The Lost Diary recap or at least a shout out to us bloggers.

Q: WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN????

testing

hello

My name is kat & I've been on this island for 16 years trying to post a comment! But it doesn't seem to be working!

OH!!!! it worked here...DANIEL I can not post any comments outside of this LDQA section. I'm wondering if the others (ha! no pun intended) are having issues!

Kelly - I too thought it was a bit funny (odd funny) that he said hi to Jack...instead of something, you know, more with a 'we're trapped on creepy island' tone.
But it wasn't 10 minutes funny! ha!

Daniel,

I am confused about the whole Kate has a son thing and how could her lawyer bring her son in as a witness if he's 2?

why can we no longer post comments under 'Another Woman'!

Anonymous from 3/11 & 3/12 are you having trouble posting too!?

Why isn't anyone addressing this?

My question is, Why are survivers of a plane crash so famous? I don't understand that. People survive plane crashes all the time, and I'm not able to recognize them off the street. I just don't get how these people become sooo famous b/c they survived a plane crash. Someone explain it to me please.
