This Is Why We Watch

This is an email I got tonight before I went to sleep. My full rewiew in the morning, obviously, but this is just something to hold you over, courtesy of Angie ...

Hi Daniel,

Just finished watching this week's episode of LOST (2/28) and I HOPE you give it an A in tomorrow's recap.  I LOVED IT!!!! and not ashamed to say so. Any episode with Desmond has proved to be a memorable episode in my opinion.  My youngest daughter (12) and I are avid fans and I'm happy this show keeps us talking to each other (you know how teenagers can be - well I'm not THAT old but still). My oldest (15) joined us tonight and while trying to explain just a fraction of what was going on proved to be so confusing to her she said "Now I know why its called LOST".   *SIGH*

I won't speculate on anything that happened in this episode as apparently I'm not that smart (my only speculation is that Sayid is 'the man on the boat' that Ben/Henry Gale is talking about) all I can say is I was breathless, my skin was tingling throughout the episode and hearing my oldest daughter saying "this is scary" was good enough for me. Maybe its back to what LOST was all about - where you are on the edge of your seat waiting for what is going to happen next and then CURSING (okay in my brain, not outloud due to children in the room) that it was over for the week!

Thanks for your recaps, I really appreciate your wit.  My most favorite line you have ever written was "Red Rover, Red Rover, send John Locke over".  I still laugh when I think about it.

Ok, so by posting Angie's note as a preview I suspect that you liked last night's episode? I hated it. Its not LOST. Lost is on an island, its trees and jungle and a core group of people that we've all come to know and love/hate. I want LOST again. Last night was "Desmond - The Spinoff."

Angie, I couldn't agree more. It warms my heart to know that you are able to watch this show with your daughter and it brings you closer together. I also watch the show with my dog, Rufus, and while he obviously isn't following the show, it brings me closer to him because he is always there for me when I am scared.

I do have one quick question - when 1996 desmond went to find Daniel Farraday, how did he know what he looked like? He went right up to him as if he knew him, yet he didn't remember meeting him on the island.

Thoughts, anyone?

Im so glad Im not the only one who loved this episode. I think it was THE BEST sofar this season.

I was afraid I was the only one and the rest of the world hated it. After talking with a co-worker this am ( WHO HATED IT) and reading these few comments. I think with this episode there will be no one "on the fence" you will either give it an A+ or a D-

I have very mixed feelings. At some point last night, as my head was swirling, I thought that this was way too complex for me to figure out and that it was no longer the Lost I fell in love with. However, by the end, it sunk in that it was a great episode and that I wanted more LOST!

For me, it was one of the best episodes in a very long time. I don't care if things are happening on the island, off the island, on the moon, whatever. It all has to do with why they are stuck there, and can't get home. A solid A from me, but almost an A+, as I was indeed on the edge of my seat.

Ana, my thinking was that Desmond probably asked people at the college where he could find Daniel Farraday. They pointed him in the right direction. We didn't see that part b/c it wasn't important, and they needed time for other important things in the show. Either that, or Desmond still remembers a little bit...but I'm going with rational today!

Rob is right - Desmond said that he had been told he could find Faraday there, and I suspect that the person who told him that also gave a vivid description of Danny-boy. What I would like to know now is go back and see the two when they met on the island - was there any glimmer of recognition? Does anyone remember? I LOVED last night's episode. I can't wait to see the recap!

This is my first post, I love this forum! And....I loved last night’s episode. I thought it was intriguing, really opened up the idea of time traveling and kept you on the edge of your seat to see what would happen.

I'm naming my next born son Desmond! This was the best episode E.V.E.R.! Probably becasue Desi is my fav character and Sayid is my second fav character. I totally forgot about the Losties. If it weren't for Sayid, I would've thought I was watching a while different show. Again, Leave it to Sayid!

great great episode... and it shed a lot of light on why, when the four new characters were introduced, Daniel was crying in front of the TV because he couldn't remember why the crash of Oceanic 815 upset him so much..... he must have been affected by the island the same way Desmond was... he already has some memory loss, exhibited by the three-playing-card scene last episode... the "something bad" mentioned in his journal at the end of this episode must eventually happen--or else it has already happened

Loved this episode!! I agree with Rebecca about watching with my teenage son. Something we have in common! And my college age son calls after the show is over to discuss.
Anyway, I believe that Daniel Faraday must have contacted Penny in 1996, after Desmond left him and her, and that's how she came to be calling the boat. Seems logical, although nothing is ever logical in Lost. Maybe Michael in on the boat as a spy? Where the F is he?

ALSO, this was the first episode in a long time where it felt like there was a lot going on.... I looked at the clock only once during the show, and it revealed that the show was only half over--yet it felt like two or three episodes of material had already occurred. It was exciting to realize how much more must happen in the second half of the episode. Sometimes the long drawn out scenes full of silence and music and characters staring at each other are just too much... this episode was a very nice change of pace.

Daniel's posting of Angie's email wherein she offered that she believes that Sayid is Ben's 'man on the boat' really hit me. Minkowski did not know who destroyed all of the communication equipment and Sayid seemed to know exactly what piece would be repairable - he seemed to go right to it, know exactly where it was, etc. But, who left that door open so they could get to the communications room???? This episode had my heart pounding the entire time. And I am hoping that since Desmond has his constant in both years (1996/2004), he will not suffer the same fate as Eloise (was that the rat's name??) and Minkowski. We need Des!!! I am looking forward to Daniel's observations.

I think this episode of Lost is going to be very divisive. For those of us who are avid fans, checking the blogs, looking at screencaps, following theories, this episode was a turning point towards revealing some of the secrets and I'm so excited! For those like my husband, who only watch the show and want the show to be (eventually) self-explanatory, they are starting to get lost in the details and feel like "it's gone too far".

I'm an avid - but not rabid - fan, and I can't wait to see what happens next! (I define rabid as the people who participate in all the off-TV but "still part of the canon" stuff - the games, etc.) My husband, on the other hand, is about ready to stop watching.

Okay, I have to say that I loved this episode. Glad to see that I was not the only one. Way to come back. Confused from 1st commercial and I love it. Big step up from last week. I guess that is all it takes to love it... confusion!

Okay, so now as far as the episode... some one help I am so confused. This was Desmonds past 8 yrs ago. How did Desmond kno what Daniel looked like in the past. He kinda just walked up on him. Second, the Radiation thing is that from when Des inserted that key thing. Also, Penny has been looking for him for 3 yrs.. but in past seasons it shows them back together. Wouldn't he remeber that he gets back 2gether with her only to leave a second time.

Okay, so will Daniel now remember 3 out of 3 cards? Everything is supposed to go back to 'normal' now right? Did it all click for Des when Penny mentions Charlie's name? Cuz, he still seems iffy when he thanks Sayid....

Yes it clicked when he heard charlie's name from penny.
My favourite couple is penny and des!! cool that they got to tell each other they loved them. ( the koreans are number 2 - and jack and kate are number3)

Issues
1) could someone tell me about the painting that penny's dad bought? who owned it?

2)last night no flashbacks technically. (i think daniel said it was. maybe it did seem so in the first few minutes) unlike usual flashbacks which just fill us in on background of characters- in this episode it is time travel of our" consciousness".

3) sayid cannot be the man on the boat. the man on the boat is the one that unlocked the door. (sayid was inside)
