Cabin Fever
**ARGH!!!! Site has been down all morning. I posted this as soon as I could. Damn you, Internet!
I've had a really hard time writing this part of the Diary and I think that goes back to the fact that I have had a hard time putting my finger on this season. Flashforwards are unpredictable, the Losties are spread out in many different places, the Freighter is looming and Jacob is hanging over my head worse than final exams. I don't think I have had less of a clue of what is going to happen from week to week than I do now.
10:02 -- My clock says 10:02, but I think "Grey's Anatomy" is still on. I don't think I can handle Locke with McNickname.
10:03 -- "His name is John!" -- Locke's mom
10:04 -- Three minutes into the show and we have our first Locke/Ben scene. As far as I am concerned, that's a good sign for a good episode.
10:05 -- We're back on the freighter and frankly it's about time. Whatever happened with Michael?
10:06 -- As to be expected, Michael is chained to a pipe in a room. Seems like he got off easy ... til now.
10:07 -- Keamy pulled the trigger, there were bullets in the gun, but the gun didn't fire. Just saying.
10:12 -- Locke encounters Horace in the woods, building a cabin. You might remember Horace as the guy who was there when Ben was born, helped Ben's dad get a job with Dharma, and there was one other thing. What was it? Oh yeah -- he died in the Purge!!!
10:13 -- And he's completely aware of the fact he's dead. And we now know the Purge was 12 years ago.
10:14 -- "Godspeed, John." -- Horace. And it was all a dream. Yeah, right.
10:15 -- "I used to have dreams." -- Ben
10:16 -- A fairly innocuous scene about how even when Locke was in an incubator people treated him like crap has just been kicked up a gazillion notches because RICHARD WAS THERE!!! So many questions ...
10:17 -- "He did it." Locke explaining the Purge to Hurley. There's something about a mass grave that rubs me the wrong way. I just can't put my finger on it.
10:21 -- "Mind if I show you a couple of neat things?" -- Richard to Locke. I am pretty sure that's a line preferred by some of the finest pedophiles in all the land.
10:24 -- I stand by belief that any scene of "Lost" over two minutes is just phenomenal. This one was no exception. I wonder what those items mean in the grand scheme of things? The vial of sand could relate to the sand around Jacob's cabin. Not sure if I get the compass yet. Oh, I'll have a theory about Alpert/Dharma later on.
10:25 -- Though I am willing to bet Locke will find the compass on Horace's body.
10:26 -- Nope, he just found cabin blueprints instead. Not sure how that helps.
10:27 -- So Keamy's a d**k, right? Anyway, he's picked up the secondary objective and he says that in it, Widmore explains where Ben is headed. Does Widmore know where the cabin is? How could he?
10:28 -- The captain, who seems on the level, now wants to help Sayid and Desmond. Next time Keamy leaves for the island, he should just sail off. That's what I'd do.
10:33 -- Every time Locke and Ben talk lately, I can't decide if Ben likes Locke or hates him. On the one hand, it's like Locke is now Jacob's new favorite and he's jealous. On the other, he sees Locke as being the person who can save him and island.
10:34 -- It's high school now and life still sucks for John Locke. Dr. Alpert has eye on Locke, but his guidance counselor keeps telling him what he can't be. What are the odds this scene ends with John saying, "Don't tell me what I can't do"?
10:35 -- "Don't tell me what I can't do!" -- Locke. Too easy.
10:36 -- What the hell are they strapping to Keamy? Prediction: Lawnmower Man takes one for the team and crashes that helicopter into a mountain or something.
10:37 -- With everything that has gone on, would you want to ride that little dinky boat back to the island? I'd take my chances on the freighter.
10:42 -- "Destiny is a fickle bitch." -- Ben. Someone has lost their mojo, big time.
10:43 -- "Cabin." -- Hurley
10:44 -- Giant leap forward in our flashback and Locke is in rehab. And the voice of that nurse can't get past me (thank you, "The Wire") -- it's Abaddon, the guy who visited Hurley in the mental ward and recruited all the Freighter people. Creepy.
10:45 -- "You need to go on a Walkabout." -- Abaddon to Locke
10:46 -- "When you're ready, Mr. Locke, you'll listen to what I'm saying. And then, when you and me run into each other again, you'll owe me one." -- Abaddon to Locke
10:49 -- After a tense stand-off on the boat, and the morse code message coming true, Lawnmower Man is going to fly Keamy and company back to the island. I stand by my prediction -- they never make it.
10:52 -- Back on the beach Jack has recovered nicely and everyone has gathered on the shore to watch the helicopter. I can't wait to see the look on their faces when it explodes.
10:53 -- Nope. Instead, Lawnmower Man throws them a sat phone so they can find Keamy. I like my idea better.
10:54 -- Hurley and Ben are passing on going into the cabin.
10:55 -- And do you know whose voice that is? It's Christian Shephard, but he says he ain't Jacob -- just his publicist.
10:56 -- CLAIRE!!!!!
10:57 -- "How do I save the island?" -- Locke
10:58 -- Great little scene between Hurley and Ben. Candy bars, bringing fat people and mass murders together for generations.
10:59 -- "He wants us to move the island." -- Locke. Sounds reasonable enough.
Everyone watches TV for a different reason. Me, I can't stand shows that wrap up their show in a neat little bow every week and solve the murder and everyone is happy. I like long-reaching story lines that last for awhile. I want my television to make me work a little bit.
At its best, "Lost" is that show (and then some). What I loved most about tonight's episode is that it focused entirely on the mythology of the show. Seeing Richard and Abaddon in Locke's flashbacks was awesome. Watching Locke and company search for the cabin was fantastic. This is the kind of episode I enjoy.
Thus, I am giving tonight's ep an A -- watching Ben react to Locke's journey tonight was fascinating. Seeing Richard again gave me goosebumps. I hope every episode from here on out focuses on the same kinds of things that tonight's did.
Here's my thing with Richard tonight (besides the fact he seemingly never ages). He was off the island. We have been told the submarine is the only way on and off the island, but Locke was a baby some 45 years ago and the Purge only happened 12 years ago. Didn't Dharma arrive on the island in the 70s? So shouldn't Richard not have had access to the sub yet? Is this proof there is another way off the island? Or am I missing something?
Anyway, here is my question to you this week --are you like me in that the more an episode of "Lost
delves into the mythology of the show, the better it is?

A+...........The smirk on Claire's face was priceless.

I give it a solid A. I thought it was so well done. I cannot believe Daniel did not mention the picture of the smoke monster that young John Locke drew!!
Posted by: Barbara | May 9, 2008 10:23 AM
I am like you Daniel- I love the mythology of the show- it messes with my head, but I love it! And seeing Richard!?!? The hair on my arms literally stood on end!! What a great episode.

whew, finally! thought i might pass out! i've had this comment simmering in my brain for hours now...
did anyone find it odd how much locke's mom looked like clair (that old favorite lost trick is back!), and how strangely similar their situations are? young rebellious mom gets pregnant mysteriously with unwanted kid, and the father's identity is a big question mark? curious, curious. also makes me wonder whether ben's mom was supposed to look similar too (see the pic on lostpedia of her in the blue dress with long blonde hair: http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Emily_Linus), and whether perhaps roger linus wasn't his real father, either. who's fathering all these babies who are separated from their mothers?!
good episode! in my opinion the last three have been fantastic altogether, give or take a few things.

i'm most interested in what the 6 objects represent...
comic book - we've seen a few of these so far
compass - symbol of direction?
vial of sand - represents the island?
knife - sign of war to come maybe?
book of laws - the island obviously has rules that should be followed
baseball glove - a game played by two teams.
i think the significance of locke choosing the compass, the vial & the knife represent lockes path since he's been on the island.
Posted by: buttercup | May 9, 2008 10:24 AM
Also I read this elsewhere and was reminded that Ben's mother's name was Emily, and so is John's...
Posted by: holdfaster | May 9, 2008 10:26 AM
Anyone else think Claire is dead?
Posted by: sawyerlover | May 9, 2008 10:27 AM
It was when he picked up the knife that Richard ruled him unworthy of going to the island... why? Too violent? What was the 3rd thing that he SHOULD have picked that would have granted him a trip there?
Posted by: AbacusAmy | May 9, 2008 10:28 AM
Daniel, I was getting worried about you! I'm with you on the long mythology theory--it's like eating whole grain bread which takes a while to digest. You're satisfied longer. Lost is clearly not just a show, it's an experience and last night's episode was a fine example of that. One question though--did anyone else think the tone with which Claire referred to Christian was a little creepy? It was almost a seductive thing. And where is Aaron? Is he a time traveler to and already with future Kate?
Posted by: lost fan 23 | May 9, 2008 10:28 AM
Great episode, albeit super creepy. Claire was almost too much to take! And Locke and Ben are totally having a bromance.
Posted by: Courtney | May 9, 2008 10:28 AM
Are John and Ben brothers?
Posted by: Mish | May 9, 2008 10:30 AM
huh, so Emily may be the same person, meaning she gave up John when she was a teenager and then went on the Marry Linus and had Ben and died? Was it the same actress?? AND if it was not the same actress maybe it is only because she had Ben years later? I would love that!
Posted by: Barbara | May 9, 2008 10:30 AM
Okay come on Hurley, how do you not smell a pit of rotting flesh at your feet. Other than that great episode.
Posted by: Monica | May 9, 2008 10:31 AM
Richard..SQEEEEEE...Wow, what an episode. Might just be my favorite for this season. I can tell how good an episode is by how hard it is to stay seated. So the island wanted Locke from birth. Must have settled on Ben to fill in until Locke was ready to go. Might have happened in the test as a kid with Richard if he had selected the Book of Laws instead of the knife. Is Christian dead..hell if I know. Is Claire dead..hell if I know. Is Desmond going to bite it on the freighter since he remained behind..I hope not. How do you move an Island...everyone in the water and KICK ? The beach losties thinking they should follow the helicopter...this could get ugly. Lost was back with a vengence last night.

Opps I forgot it has been twelve years...
Posted by: Monica | May 9, 2008 10:32 AM
I think Claire is dead. I was sure Christian was going to be Abaddon, 'you owe me one'; I cant wait to see what John has to do for him when the time comes.
Posted by: Mish | May 9, 2008 10:32 AM
Great episode!! Question...does Ben ever blink? Just wondering.
On a personal note, I found out on Wednesday that I have Thyroid disease and with it, I've got this nasty little tumor that has to be nuked. I've nicknamed the sucker "Keamy" so I can feel great satisfaction as it gets nuked. Keamy is one sick bastard!!! Did you guys see how he towered over my beloved Sayid??? Did they do that for effect, or is he really a bad ass giant?
Posted by: Suze | May 9, 2008 10:32 AM
Hmm... it can't be a coincidence that both Locke's mom and Ben's mom are named Emily, can it?
Posted by: Leigh | May 9, 2008 10:32 AM
Claire freaked me the freak out.
Posted by: Tis I | May 9, 2008 10:33 AM
barbara, me too!
AbacusAmy, i thought i detected a look of satisfaction on Richard's face when John was considering the Book of Laws... I think he was supposed to pick that up. Maybe it would be a confirmation of his tendencies towards leadership and loyalty to the way things should be.
Posted by: holdfaster | May 9, 2008 10:33 AM
Well now, that certainly was a GREAT episode. I've been thinking (as usual), and I believe I have come upon something. Has anyone noticed the weaponry Keamy & Co. possess? They have fully automatic assault rifles, semi automatic pistols, RPGs, and other advanced items used 2 wage war. This leads me 2 believe that Rousseau & Karl were NOT done in by Keamy & Co. C'mon, they shot an RPG @ Claire's house & were unloading rounds @ Sawyer. Y in the hell would they use blow darts to take out 2 lightly armed people (was Karl even armed)? Y not just shoot Rousseau & Karl? I think the Others (Richard) killed Rousseau & Karl & turned Alex over 2 Keamy.
When Richard goes 2 c Locke as a boy, he makes Locke decide "what already belongs 2 u." Locke chooses the sand, compass, & knife. The sand must stand 4 the island, and the knife, violence. The compass I am not sure about, maybe it's a "moral compass?." I think Richard wanted Locke 2 choose the Book of Laws (self explanitory) b/c @ the time the DHARMA Initiative was on the island & possibly breaking "island laws" or "island rules," and Locke was supposed 2 come in as the new leader 2 impose law & order. Since Locke chose the knife, this meant that he would bring violence 2 the island, or assume island leadership through violence. I believe that Richard wanted 2 remove Ben from power, allowing Locke 2 assume the role of leader. Richard eliminated Rousseau & Karl 2 get Alex so Keamy would have some leverage over Ben. Ben, as a man of law & order, would b ineffective versus the war mongering Keamy & Co. Locke, on the other hand, CHOSE violence (the knife), and is better suited 2 go against Keamy. This plan has obviously worked as Ben relinquished his role as "Leader (sometimes)" b4 Locke headed in2 the cabin. Richard, in my opinion, is the true "Leader" of the Others and he was the driving force behind the gassing of the DHARMA Initiative.
How about Keamy's gun jamming? Michael is a veritable Superman @ the moment! &, who is the guy Keamy shot? he called him "Captain." I thought Keamy was the captain? It looks like we found out what happened 2 the doctor...& how did Lawnmower man find out Michael was an Oceanic 815 survivor?
When Locke says "we have 2 move the island," what does he mean? physically move it? that's downright impossible, but this is LOST...any thoughts on this?
Last point (for now) is that I believe we can now put 2 rest the theory that Locke is in the coffin. This episode has made it abundantly clear that Locke is of the utmost importance 2 the island, and that means the island (probably) won't let him die. Aaron as well, as Christian said "the baby is where he NEEDS 2 b, & that IS NOT HERE."
Posted by: Kruxoli | May 9, 2008 10:33 AM
It is so the same mother and they are definitely brothers.
Posted by: Barbara | May 9, 2008 10:34 AM
OMG, Claire's face was priceless. And she didn't seem the least bit upset for not having Aaron with her. I wondered way back in the first season when Locke built that cradle for Claire if they were somehow destined together. Seemed random but we all knew nothing on LOST is random. I think Ben is trying to figure out at what point he can REALLY get rid of Locke once and for all. He basically told Locke he wasn't the man Ben was. The scene with little Locke seemed relavant in that I felt the kid chosed the knife knowing it was the wrong item. Just the look on his face; he didnt seem disappointed enough that he didn't go with Richard. I'm guessing they person who expressed disappointment that the smoke monster didn't do more damage was pretty happy this week considering the thing gutted at least one person. Man this show will never be topped!!!! EVER!!!
Posted by: Becca | May 9, 2008 10:34 AM
I think the items that Richard asked young John to identify looked really old....like maybe they had been on the Black Rock? Any chance for a reincarnation theory?
I can't wait to see more about richard and abbadon!
Loved the cabin scene....curious about the Claire thing and why she looked so smug.

I agree with you, Daniel, that the mythology eps are best. Just like on X-Files! And I so missed our favorite eyeliner guy! So glad we all prayed for his show to get canceled because it worked. We needed him back where he belongs.
And any show focusing on John and Ben is priceless. Think Ben is jealous much? I love that this show already confirmed what I knew about my favorite boy Locke -- he was specially chosen for this.
And Sarah B., your smokin' hot old man Christian is at it again. I love it!
Man, this show is great . . .

Suze, good luck with blasting Keamy. Great attitude. And I think Sayid is just that short.
Posted by: lost fan 23 | May 9, 2008 10:37 AM
guess i am in the minority here but i did not find last night's episode so great. i thought it was good, but not an A+. it was all over the place and really provided insight into anything, especially the characters, which is what the show is truly about. sorry Daniel, but i think your love affair with John and Ben has clouded your judgment on this one.
Posted by: sarah | May 9, 2008 10:37 AM

Suze, good luck w/blasting Keamy. Great attitude on your part. And I think Sayid is just that short and Keamy is taller than the average bear.
Posted by: lost fan 23 | May 9, 2008 10:38 AM
Kruxoli- Keamy and the Captain are 2 different people. That had me confused last week (or was it the week before) b/c I think they look similar and I didn't remember seeing Keamy before he was outside Ben's house...
Posted by: AbacusAmy | May 9, 2008 10:39 AM
Okay..I think Richard wanted Locke to pick the book of laws because he wanted him to pick all the things that were on the island. for example the sand, obviously on the island, the compass he found in season 1 and gave it to sayid remember? and the book of laws is where eko finds the orientation video...just a thought.
Posted by: Jaclyn | May 9, 2008 10:40 AM
A+++ Daniel and yes I like this type of episode better it messes with your mind alot, like Ben...
It was A pluses because:
- Claire is not only 'dead', she is not at all concerned about Aaron and is all creepy and giggly, not maternal at all, like those parents who haunt their kids (Emily Linus for example). I am guessing that these "bodies" are possessed by the "Jacob" factor and are not actually Christian and Claire (and Horace ...etc, etc)
- Both Ben and Locke's mom(s) were named Emily and they were both premature babies (premies)
- Locke seemed to have been the "chosen one" whose choices delayed his trip to the island, however the Ben ended up in all the right places at the right times (save that pun for later :)to become the leader of the 'Others'
- Matthew Abbadon putting the idea of a walkabout in Locke's head, which is what landsd him in Australia to start with ...
- Richard's time travel
Last night was for the cultists (See Book of Laws people - more than meets the eye)

I hope that made sense. i meant to say the compass that locke found in season one.
Posted by: Jaclyn | May 9, 2008 10:42 AM
also does anyone have any thoughts on the fact that the purge happened 12 years ago but rousseau (sp?) has been on the island for 16? did ben steal alex while he was still dharma?
Posted by: Jaclyn | May 9, 2008 10:45 AM
I think Locke was supposed to pick the Book of Laws.
Someone on another site mentioned both John and Ben's moms insisted on naming them John and Ben. That is from the bible too. I think it was Leah, wife of Jacob (correct me if I am wrong) who insisted on the names of her sons when it would be the mans decision back in the day. May mean nothing but felt smart and I wanted to share.
Posted by: jen | May 9, 2008 10:45 AM
did anyone notice what was taped inside teen Locke's locker? it seemed like it should be significant.
also, for the previews of next week when the woman says something like they're calling you the Oceanic 6, didn't it look like a spaceship was opening?? it reminded me of the inside view of "close encounters" and really really creeped me out..am i crazy??
Posted by: goldy | May 9, 2008 10:45 AM
i think its interesting that john's counselor told him he cant be the super hero type, & jack's dad told him he's not a hero either...does this tie in with all the comic books we've seen?? & if they're not heros then what are they? does that mean they cant save the day or the island?
Posted by: buttercup | May 9, 2008 10:45 AM

Posted by: Bruthas Keeper | May 9, 2008 10:47 AM
Jaclyn- you are bringing up a lot of good stuff I hadn't thought of before. 12 years vs 16 years... very strange. Also your reasoning behind the 3 items makes a lot of sense as to why those things "belong" to Locke.
Posted by: AbacusAmy | May 9, 2008 10:47 AM
thanks abacusAmy...I like to post early because when other people start posting really intense things i get lost in the crowd.
Posted by: Jaclyn | May 9, 2008 10:49 AM
Maybe Richard freaked when young Locke picked the knife because he had some sort of "preminition" that one "chosen one" would cause destruction (Ben) and the other (Locke) would save the island--but at that point he didn't know which was which?
Posted by: Malone | May 9, 2008 10:49 AM
bruthas keeper..that makes sense and reminds me why i should just read this site, not post :)
Posted by: goldy | May 9, 2008 10:50 AM
Yay! You're up and running again :) I watched my tape of the show TWICE last night, then logged on in the wee smalls, only to find everything locked up tight here. I could hardly get to sleep:(
Where to start? So many answers, but so many new questions. Richard. Abaddon. Live Doc. Dead Doc. Christian. Claire. This episode was an A+++++++++ and then some.
Richard showing up the hospital to see baby Locke: Creepy. Showing up to see little Locke: Uber-creepy! Why did Locke draw the smoke monster killing someone? Was Locke choosing the knife in any way tied to Abaddon's later comment about the "walkabout" (you only take a knife with you) or to the case full of knives he had with him when the plane crashed? Seems like there must be some connection. What was the name of the book? I thought at first it said "Book of Souls". Then as I looked at it more times it looked more like "Book of Laws". Anyone know for sure what it said? A google search shows that Book of Souls is about Satan and Book of Laws appears to be about Witchcraft. I guess either would fit!
Also, Locke playing Backgammon from little on must mean something. Remember how he talked to Walt about the dark and the light and good and evil? Does anyone think that Richard may be Locke's "real" father", and if so, then who is the con-man? A step- father? Richard would be about twice the age of Emily, as her mother said. I know I'm kind of going out on a limb there.
Now I am really going to go out on a limb, but bear with me: Is it possible that Richard and Abaddon are different manifestations of the same being? And I say being, because I no longer believe that either of them are human. When Abaddon was talking to Locke, I was suddenly struck by his similarity to Richard. Eerie eyes that look right through you. Angular jaw. 5 o'clock shadow. Creepy half-smile. Then I started thinking of the backgammon game and the dark/light, good/evil thing. Could one be a good manifestation and the other an evil one? You people are all so good at theorizing. If this looks like a possibility, maybe you can flesh it out for me.
One last thing. Doc's nastily stitched cut did not appear to be on his face when he was killed. So how could it have been there when he was found?
My brain is about to explode from trying to understand this episode. Arrgggghhh!

The naming of John reminded me of the story of the naming of John the Baptist, the prohet who proclaimed the coming of Jesus. Men children were supposed to be named for one of their relatives, but this did not happen in the case of John the Baptist, whose mother proclaimed (and father approved) that his name would be John.

Ben & Locke brothers... I like that train of thought. it would certainly explain the dialogue b/w Ben & Locke in which Locke says 2 Ben: "I'm not u," and 2 which Ben replies: u certainly r NOT."
I'm asking about the actual captain b/c I don't think I've ever seen him b4. we saw Keamy as soon as Sayid & Desmond landed on the freighter, and Keamy was introduced as the captain. when did the actual captain (who helped Sayid) come in2 play? did we c a flash forward/back for him like we saw w/Miles, Faraday, Charlotte, & Lapidus (Lawnmower Man)?
Is Abbadon (The Wire!) independent of Whidmore? Abbadon only hired Naomi, Faraday, Charlotte, Miles, & Lapidus. I'm not sure if he hired Keamy & Co. b/c the real captain said "I was hired 2 ferry scientists" and Lapidus says "I was hired 2 fly scientists." So if Abbadon was hiring scientists only, how did they end up w/Keamy & Co.?

This episode was by far one of my favourites this season. I am always perplexed with John Locke's name as John Locke was one of the greatest philosophers of the Enlightenment - along with Hobbes and yes Rousseau (recognize that name). The childhood scene with Locke and Richard was interesting - especially with the Book of Laws on the table. I may be going far too much into it but Locke the philosopher was famous for this thought - Locke also suggested that “the little and almost insensible impressions on our tender infancies have very important and lasting consequences." Too true in our John Locke.

On a note about lostisagame.com great research, but that kid needs to get laid. Awesome episode. whoever said ben and locke are brothers I agree. claire goes from scared confused. mother to weird sinister smiling woman hanging out in a dark cabin with her dead dad.. somethings missing. wasn't claire told that only she could raise aaron.. and christian now says aaron is where he needs to be? did anyone else think that the lockes mom getting hit by car looked an aweful lot like the island houses.

Goldy - no you're not crazy. But it def wasn't a space ship. I was in the Navy, stationed on air craft carriers, and thats just what it looks like when the hangar bay open. (Below the flight deck.) From next weeks clips it looks like the "O6" get on the freighter and are taken back. We shall see...

OMG! This episode was an A+ for me for sure! For me it's right up there with The Constant.
Here are my notes:
No previously on LOST - always freaks me out!
I also noticed that Emily (John's mom) Looked exactly like claire! And that her name was the same as Ben's mom.
My favorite line from Hurley, of course: "You're following me? Dude, I'm not even in front!"
The scene when Locke, Hurley & Ben where looking for the cabin was excellent. There was so much emotion & so much was said with expression. I LOVED IT!
HORACE!: That has got to be one of my favorite scenes of LOST ever! My head was spinning! It was so well done, so eerie.
Christian-hunk-o-luv baby! (that was for all you Christian groupies!) So he's Jacob's right hand man, his 'No.2' let's say!
I get a calming feeling from him in this scene. In the past Christian scenes, for me, have been full of tension & turmoil. I was relaxed the whole time he spoke! Spooky!!!!!!
RICHARD ALPERT!!!! OMG! Richard is his own entity as far as I'm concerned. I don't think the same rules apply to him that they do to everyone else. Richard ISN'T taking the sub back to town. haha!
I believe Richard may be a spawn of the island. I have to think about this further before I go on.
Almost like who came first: The island or Richard?
I thought it was funny when Hurley said HE had a THEORY why only they can see the cabin. That made me chuckle.
(when they showed John as a kid)The black smoke drawing on the wall was freaky.
I got goosebumps when Richard showed Locke the items.
However, the knife DOES belong to John. I'm confused as to why Richard said that wasn't right.
Teenage John ; So they come back for him, which maybe means, he did pick the correct items. Maybe he Richard was disappointed that John didn't already realize what his real destiny was & what he was really meant to do on the island. And that made him think he wasn't ready yet.
Always love "Don't tell me what I can't do!"
Sayid & Desmond & events on the freighter! My head is still spinning!
Favorite line of all time: Ben: "Destiny is a fickle bitch!"
I knew that was Abbadon pushing John in the wheelchair. A chill came over me. WTF?! I can't wait until they run into each other again & Abbadon is looking to collect!
WHY did Capt. Gault look away, NEVER take your eyes off someone who has a gun on you!
Meanwhile back on the island: The phone Frank dropped: I like the way Capt Gault & Frank are pretty clueless what they're actually doing there. So many secrets & so intertwined. I love it!
Hurley is very sweet for sharing his candy bar. Ladies the truth is, although I heart Jack, if I was there I'd befriend Hurley before Jack or Sawyer anyday!
Claire looked as spooky as I was hoping for!!! "Don't worry, I'm fine, I'm with him!" NICE!
He wants us to move the island! I & I remember a few other people mentioning the island being able to re-locate. That's probably the first thing I was ever close to be right about so far, I think! :)
Sorry for rambling! I'm very interested to read what you guys think of 'Cabin Fever'!
Happy Friday y'all!

So we now know that Abbadon was the one who "influenced" Locke to take the trip to Australia but the big question is what will Locke owe him when they meet again? If so, why did Abbadon recruit Daniel, Sarah, Naomi etc to find Ben, shouldn't they be finding Locke.
Is it Team Abbadon vs Team Richard. Who are the players on each team. Let's get some lines drawn pretty soon!!! That will make it alittle easier to follow the plot.
The man who got shot on the freighter was the captain. Didn't someone mention earlier that the captain cannot be trusted. He seemed to be helpful with Sayid getting the raft to return to the island. Can't wait to see the losties expression when they see Sayid and find out the Ban was right about the people on the freighter wanting to kill everyone. Maybe Ben will start his manipulation of Sayid when they meet again.
Also, Juliette has a strange smirk on her face when the helicopter flew overhead?
So the morse code came in to the freighter and said that the doctor had his throat slit before he even left the freighter. The time lapse plot still confuses me...Does it mean that the island foresee's the future before it actually happens?
Can't wait tilll next week!!

I usually love Daniel's reviews because they have funny comments and insights. Today's stunk. It was a basic play by play of the show. For more insight, please go to Entertainment Weekly's site and read the episode reviews from Mr. Jenson (I believe that is who does them). They give to much information to duplicate here, but just take a look - you'll be fascinated. Daniel, I hope next week you are back "on your game".

I'm glad others were jumping up and down like children in front of their tv sets. It started with Richard looking in on baby John and never stoppped . . .

Tootsie1 - I am with you on being blown away by this episode!!
Posted by: kat | May 9, 2008 11:03 AM
Did anyone think that Claire looked drugged? I think *I'd* have to be to be so calm while sitting in a freaky cabin in the jungle with my dead Daddy while my baby was sitting alone in the wilderness. Right?

I agree with everyone else that John's Emily must be Ben's Emily...there are no coincidences on this show, so John and Ben must be brothers. BUT...are they full or half brothers?
I think Richard is the father of John, maybe also of Ben. I recall Emily asking her mother if she was jealous when Emily was leaving the house...and the look on the mother's face when Richard showed up at the hospital window there, she definitely recognized him, but told the nurse she didn't.
And of course, we all wonder why Richard never ages. Is he Jacob himself or is he, like Christian, Jacob's VP or something? I would love to find out how Christian comes to play such a big part in this...perhaps in some flashback we'll hopefully see, Christian encounters Richard or Jacob. And it's interesting that since Christian is such a big part of the island now, that both of his children happen to be on that island now. As I said, no coincidences in this show.

When Richard was testing Locke and asked him which of the things already belonged to him, he wanted him to pick the comic book, on the cover was a lost island or something like that, I don't remember the exact words, but that is what Richard wanted him to chose when he chose the knife on TOP of the book.
Posted by: Vickie | May 9, 2008 11:04 AM
girl239, I think Daniel, like the rest of us, was too blown away to get snarky. He was just letting it sink in . . .
Posted by: cathead67 | May 9, 2008 11:04 AM
OMG!!!!! most of you guys are completly skipping over the best Lost moment ever!!!
Just Hurley and Ben chillin and sharing a candy bar. No schemes or action at all. That was F-ing I N C R E D I B L E.
Posted by: Adam | May 9, 2008 11:05 AM
i think the reason why Richard told John that the knofe wasn't his is because it was a test. John is very concerned about being a super hero or a man of great phyiscal strength, but the truth is that his destiny is with the island. so, Richard checks in on him periodically to see if he is "ready" to realize what he should be doing. you see, John's initial reaction was to the sand and compass, but he ultimately chose the knife. he later rejects the science camp cause he doesnt want to be viewed in that way. another sign that he was not "ready" for the island.
Posted by: sarah | May 9, 2008 11:07 AM
Isn't there eventually going to be some sort of problem with John? Richard told him in order to be their leader, he had to kill his father who conned him out of a kidney. But John couldn't do it. He had Sawyer kill him instead. I think this is going to bite him in the ass at some point.
Posted by: Ass Biter | May 9, 2008 11:07 AM
Claire seemed to be in a weird trance to me. That goofy smile on her face, like she was relaxed... who could relax there?!? Then again Christian wasn't creepy this time, he was very soothing- I thought maybe he had hypnotized Claire or something.
Posted by: AbacusAmy | May 9, 2008 11:07 AM
Adam, to me "Destiny is a fickle bitch" was the best moment ever. Poor jealous little Ben, acting like a spoiled brat because John got chosen over him.
Posted by: cathead67 | May 9, 2008 11:08 AM
I think Little John was supposed to pick the comic book with the picture of the island on it. Richard didnt try to recruit him again until high school, after he made a model of an ISLAND for the science fair.
Posted by: Hey You | May 9, 2008 11:09 AM
Ahh . . . who needs the Jack/Kate romance when we've got the Ben/John bromance? So much more entertaining!
Posted by: cathead67 | May 9, 2008 11:10 AM
Here is my quick two cents.....I believe both Richard and Abbadon are searching for the "next in line" to the island throne. I believe one has good intentions and one has evil intentions(doesn't matter which is which). When young Locke reached for the knife, Richard quickly new he was not "his" guy, but later in life I believe it was Abbadon who tried to recruit him to the "summer Science Camp" and the walkabout because he knew he was "his" guy..
Posted by: Bruthas Keeper | May 9, 2008 11:11 AM
Locke said "he did" when asked what happened to the dharma people...creepier than "he did it" as written here...
Posted by: jason | May 9, 2008 11:11 AM
OK...hold up. Holdfaster you noted that John's grandmother looked a lot like Ben's mother. Ben's mother's name is Emily. After last night's episode we learned that John's mother's name is Emily. John is quite a few years older than Ben. Could it be possible that Ben and John are half brothers? Same mother?
Wow...I just blew my own mind. I think I need to go lie down.
Posted by: mandisweetdreams | May 9, 2008 11:11 AM
Dana Michelle: you might have something going with Alpert and Abaddon being just part of the two sides, black and white, good and evil. What if it's the island that's playing the game?
I shrieked when I saw Richard! Although I admit I was one of those who wished he didn't get canceled on his new show, I'm thrilled that he is back to finish being part of this fine headache we call LOST.
To answer Daniel's question, Definitely a better show when its talking about mythology, just like the X-Files. They had black oil, we got Smokie; they had aliens, we got Smokie!
Claire kinda creeped me out, and I thought for sure Christian was gonna transform himself into something scary. I was covering my eyes the whole time like a little baby.
Posted by: Janice | May 9, 2008 11:12 AM
I think that in the fb Abbadon is working for Widmore. They must somehow know that Locke is the "chosen one" and if he flies near the island, the plane will crash to bring Locke to it. This is how Widmore knows that 815 is really on the island. Otherwise, how is he so sure that 815 is there?
Posted by: Raven R. | May 9, 2008 11:13 AM
dana michelle - The doc's had a scar on his left cheek.
Posted by: kat | May 9, 2008 11:13 AM
I don't know if anyone else noticed but the way in which richard asked Locke to choose those things was the same thing I saw in a movie about how they choose the dalai lama. It was to show he was a reincarnation of the old dalai lama I think. This whole episode seemed very spiritual to me I guess which is the mythology thing yall have all talkedabout. I'd say my favorite episode of the season. I loved it.
Posted by: stan | May 9, 2008 11:13 AM
I think there is definitely a theme with the games that Locke plays -- remember the chess game with the computer, as well as the "Risk" game?? Ben has also made references to games (eg: the "breaking the rules" comment).
Also, the Ben/Locke being brothers theory is interesting -- remember when Ben brought Locke's "father" to the island, and said that Locke **needed** to kill his father? (which he couldn't bring himself to do).
All in all, a great episode.

Hey You: Did I miss that? I don't recall the science fair project being revealed. I watched online, so I could have missed it.
Posted by: girl239 | May 9, 2008 11:14 AM
Thanks 4 clearing that up Jaclyn. so, the note Sayid got while he & Desmond were being held on the freighter said "don't trust the captain." does that mean Keamy or the dead captain?

OK...well there I go with the hasty posting. I see Mish and Barbara beat me to my "are Ben and John brothers" theory.
Different note: Claire was really creepy last night. She seemed very not herself and odd. Hmm.............
Posted by: mandisweetdreams | May 9, 2008 11:16 AM
Last week I brought up the issue with the purge only having been 12 years ago (according to what Horace said) but that just not fitting with the chronology of things. Ben would have to be way younger than he is. Now it's looking like other people are picking up on this (The 16 year-Rousseau comment) Something doesn't add up and I think this is going to be relevant down the line.
I like the idea of Ben and John being brothers. Plays into the whole birthright thing. Maybe Richard fathered both of them, as well as Aaron!
Maybe Richard fathered every last person on that island. Just about every one of them has father issues. Ok, that's just nuts. Or is it?
Posted by: dana michelle | May 9, 2008 11:16 AM
kruxoli - i believe keamy and co were introduced as security.

Does anyone else think that the reason there will be just 6 lostees rescued is because Locke will be able to move the island. After the first group gets off, the island disappears?
Posted by: Kayce | May 9, 2008 11:19 AM
Karla L.: Interesting how you brought up that Ben told Locke he needed to kill his father, especially since Ben killed his own father. Maybe there was supposed to be a pattern or certain path that should be taken by Locke, but he keeps making unexpected choices - like choosing the knife and not being able to kill his own father. Ben even tried to identify with John when he accused him of tricking Hurley into thinking it was his idea to remain with them, but John told Ben it wasn't a manipulation and Ben seemed surprised.
Posted by: girl239 | May 9, 2008 11:20 AM
mandisweetdreams, did you mean to say john's mother instead of grandmother? that's what i meant earlier, that his mother looked like ben's mom and also like clair.

jacklyn...I also wondered how rossueau survived the purge. to my previous point about locke born on the island, wouldn't that make him special and why richard wants him.
Posted by: Gregg | May 9, 2008 11:23 AM
Kayce: That is a great thought! It would explain things, but the six would have to have some idea that the other survivors are still alive, otherwise they wouldn't be wanting to go back, as Jack has stated.
Posted by: girl239 | May 9, 2008 11:23 AM
Kat: The doc did have a healing wound last night, but remember how it looked like it was healing when we first saw him, but it was all fresh and horribly sewn up when his body washed up on the island? I recall someone pointing out the discrepancy when that episode aired. There didn't appear to be any stitches in it anymore when he was still alive, so where did they come from when he was found dead?

I agree that John's mom resembled Claire. I thought that too. What could that possibly mean????? or are the writers of the show just enjoying throwing us for a loop! "Hey, this actress looks alot like Claire, let's use her - it'll really freak the viewers out!" I dont' know about you, but my mind hurts!
Posted by: girl239 | May 9, 2008 11:27 AM
I think Richard is time traveling. I think that the items he had were already John's because he took them from him. He wanted to see if "little john" could recognize the things that were his from a young age.

Can the island be moved by changing the coordinates? Just a thought.
Posted by: lost fan | May 9, 2008 11:36 AM
Ben and John cant be brothers. Bens mom dies during childbirth. Anthony Cooper later used John's mom, Emily, as part of a con to get John to donate his kidney. So, she is still alive...if she was the same woman...she would of died while having Ben. Good idea...But, Johns mom is still around. Well...They could have the same DAD...but not mothers...

I loved the Fickle Bitch line. I usually will only rewind the DVR if I couldn't understand something or if I missed something. I actually rewound that line 3 times just to hear Michael Emerson's deleivery of it. It was perfect.
Did anyone notice what was taped to the inside of High School John's locker. There was the cover of a comic book I think and a black & white picture of some man. I paused it but couldn't make it out. Did anyone see it?
Posted by: widsl | May 9, 2008 11:38 AM
Goldy - I'm thinking that what you think looks like a spaceship is the loading area of a naval vessel of some kind maybe? Like how a ship backs up to the beach and unloads men and tanks? Maybe it will be Penny and her money hiring some kind of ship to the rescue.
That's just what it looked like to me.
Posted by: lost in bend | May 9, 2008 11:43 AM
HHHELLLLLOOOOOO CHRISTIAN! wahoo. i have been saying since day one that he would be so very important to this island and the plot of it. there is a reason he "speaks" for jacob.
okay here i go
1) claire is not dead or LOST dead. when she saw christian she had no idea he was dead. i think he explained the island, etc to her, which is why she had that face when locked asked what he needed to do to save the island. whatever christian told her it must be good because she seems a-okay with whatever happens to aaron. i wonder why he told locke not to say anything...wait i just thought of this...ben and juliet have to know claire and jack are related right? i mean they have their files...DUH why did i never think of that.
2) locke's real father is not the man sawyer killed. i want it to be christian SO SO SO SO SO bad, that would be crazy. that could be why claire looked at him the way she did and she always felt comfortable around him.
3) as soon as i saw the black hands pushing the wheel chair i knew it was abaddon. i think he may be working for whidmore, as keamy and crew are. but they both have different missions.
4)i want to know how they explain aaron as one of the 6
4) i forgot lockes mom's name was emily, she was way back in season one i think thats why she never really seemed important by the time we met bens mom, emily...
so the family would be...emily is mother to ben and locke (half brothers) christian (i hope) could be lockes dad and ill go with roger actually being bens dad.
then we go to christian being the father of jack and claire and locke...interesting how the man of faith/man of science come from the same father and the mother of the "savior?" of the island is their little sister...
could this all be going back to my jacob/aaron family bible story...
5) ps i dig christians new look. and richards guyliner is looking fabu as always. and the candy bar scene was the funniest f.ing thing i have seen in a long time.
ahhh so much more to say but i just cant put it all together
Posted by: sarah badara | May 9, 2008 11:44 AM
jennifer i totally read your post after i posted mine about the moms, how could i forget that!?!?!? damn, there goes that theory, well at least the ben and locke being brothers part, but that still leaves my locke and claire and jack siblings theory in tact

That kid is 50 years old and a marketing exec, although from the look of his site, he should have gone into engineering.

i agree great episode, i think the way they move the island comes from the comic book...slow it down & look at the cover, genius!
Posted by: buddha00man | May 9, 2008 11:52 AM
Could the compass have represented the fact that locke is supposed to MOVE the island?!?!
Posted by: Jenna | May 9, 2008 11:52 AM
It would be fun to think that Emily Linus and Emily Locke are the same person, but remember, Emily Locke met Locke when she was older.
Unless the writers want to reeeeeally reach and say that Swoozie Kurtz's "Emily" was a liar paid by Anthony Cooper to say she was Locke's mom, but not actually related to Locke at all. I really don't see them doing that. I think the "Emily" is just another way to point out how similar Locke and Ben are in some ways.
What I really want to know is WHO is Abaddon, really? Good or Bad? Working for Widmore, or himself, or someone else entirely? Somehow related to Mrs. Hawking and Richard and the other characters who seem to have unclear loyalties?
Lastly, SO happy that CBS is letting Nestor Carbonell film for Lost. Was Cane cancelled or something? CBS had said they wouldn't be letting him film for other networks because they didn't want to "confuse viewers."
Posted by: ali | May 9, 2008 11:54 AM
Isn't Christian too young to be Locke's dad too? Maybe not technically, but Locke is alot older than Jack. Plus Locke's mom was seeing an older man. In fb Locke's mom is pretty old (seemingly older than Christian), so unless he's aging really well (like Richard) he can't be the older man who Emily Locke was dating. That's a mouthful and might not make sense... anyone?
Posted by: AbacusAmy | May 9, 2008 11:54 AM
ali, i thought that too about anthony cooper, but why would two people who werent even related con this guy? but there has to be a reason the moms have the same name, unless the writers like playing with our emotions...
Posted by: sarah badara | May 9, 2008 11:56 AM
Oh, and also: WHY IS JACK SO STUPID? "Gee, we know that Daniel and Charlotte have lied about some important stuff and are generally acting sketchy. Now let's go follow their people's helicopter into the jungle! Isn't that a swell idea, guys?"
Posted by: ali | May 9, 2008 11:56 AM
I know Christian might be too young, but I don't think Locke and Jack have that much of an age difference, considering, do we really know the exact ages of our characters?
Posted by: sarah badara | May 9, 2008 11:58 AM
Hasn't Locke seen Richard while on the island? You can't tell me he doesn't recognize him...?
Posted by: Crystal | May 9, 2008 12:00 PM
But maybe, just maybe Emily did not really die? Lot's of people "die" on this show...otherwise what could them both being named Emily mean. Everything on the show happens or is done for a reason... Also, consider time travel, maybe Emily is a time traveler? That also might not have been John's real mom that helped with the con. remember she gave him up when he was born, he would have no idea what she should look like.
Posted by: Barbara | May 9, 2008 12:02 PM
Crytal-Locke was pretty young when Richard came for a visit. I can buy that he would not recognize him now. I wouldn't recognize half of my own cousins if I ran them over.
Posted by: widsl | May 9, 2008 12:02 PM
widsl, I agree about the "fickle bitch" line. This is why more theatrical actors should be on television and in film. They tend to learn more technical craft, like Michael Emerson, which can only improve upon already good writing.
Posted by: ali | May 9, 2008 12:04 PM
Okay, Locke is 48 but no idea on Jack's birthday. I guess Christian would be too old, bummer. I was really excited about that. To be Locke's dad he would have to have been born in the 1920's which would make him 80-something at the time of his death. But I mean, what brings me back to the fact that it could be him is that he is representing Jacob!! Who is to say Christian is not like Richard, only Richard spends more time on the island, hence his ageless appearance over the past fifty years (from Locke's birth to now). Christian isn't always on the island, so he still ages some, just not as much. And does anyone wonder why he had an affair with a woman all the way in Australia? I mean, my aunt is a doctor, but she doesn't fly halfway around the world for conferences and stuff...
And I just thought of this. My boyfriend said its because Locke was too young to remember, but how could he not recognize Richard when he saw him on the island? I know I don't remember a lot from yesterday, but I can recognize faces like its cool, and I'm thinking I'd have no problem recognizing a face that hadn't aged in 40 years.
PS I'm not really arguing with any one who thinks otherwise. ( I feel thats what this sounds like ) I'm kinda just laying it out there for my own sake...sorry.
Posted by: sarah badara | May 9, 2008 12:05 PM
I find It kind of odd, almost dissapointing, that sayid was able to just hop on the motorized dingy and head right back toward the island, I mean it was good, but your telling me that the entire time Des and Sayid were on the freighter they never thought of hopping on that dingy and zooming off?

three creepy faces...
Claire with that smirk hanging out behind the cabin door.
Abbadon looking at wheelchair John in the elevator.
