Man of Science, Man of Faith
Welcome to the first edition of the season 2 re-watch "Lost" Diary. (Needs a better name, I know). Sorry I didn't get this up sooner -- I actually watched this on Sunday, but couldn't get around to finishing since the Lakers weren't done destroying my spirit until last night.
As I have said many times before, I have been really excited to re-watch season 2 for many reasons. First off, I think season 2 is regarded by most to be the weakest season and I don't remember thinking (at the time) it was a significant drop-off from the other seasons. Secondly, after re-watching season 1 last summer (and watching season 4 just now) it amazes me how little of what is important to the show now existed at all in season 1. Season 2 is where the mythology of the show really takes off -- and I am looking forward to seeing that again.
Without further ado, let's roll ...

Season 2 is where the mythology of the show really takes off -- and I am looking forward to seeing that again.
Without further ado, let's roll ...
00:01 -- Watching Desmond type in the numbers, knowing this time that he is TYPING IN THE NUMBERS, is actually creepier the second time around.
00:02 -- You've got to make your own kind of music!!!
00:03 -- Watching the camera go down the corridor and up the shaft to Jack and Locke just gave me goosebumps. It's like watching again for the first time.
00:05 -- Jack and Locke are arguing over whether or not to go down into the hatch. One of the themes of the season begins ...
00:07 -- In the ER, Jack chooses to save his future wife over Shannon's dad. It's a small world, after all.
00:08 -- "I lost the damn dog." -- Shannon. I did not miss her.
00:09 -- "Uh, maybe because I was running towards you, waving my arms, yelling don't do that?" -- Hurley
00:11 -- Hey look, it's Walt dripping wet in the forrest and speaking backwards. Season 2 is off to a phenomenal start.
00:12 -- "Then again, 5 hours ago I was pulled into a hole by what appeared to be a column of black smoke." -- Locke
00:13 -- "Life's not so bad, right? I mean, sure the Others are coming to, like, eat us all and every once in a while someone blows up all over you, but you do get to sleep in every morning." -- Hurley
00:14 -- Listening to Hurley explain the history of the numbers -- I think it's the longest he's ever spoken on the show without a joke thrown in.
00:16 -- "You have a fracture dislocation of your thoracic lumbar spine with multiple crushed vertebrae. Your back is broken. Your spleen is ruptured and bleeding into your abdomen and that has to be stopped. I'm going to perform surgery and repair as much damage as possible, but even the most optimistic result puts the likelihood of retaining any feeling or mobility anywhere below the waist at... extremely unlikely." -- Jack. So, what's the bad news, Doc?
00:18 -- Jack is explaining the whole hatch thing to rest of the camp, and as they pan through everyone I don't see Nikki or Paulo anywhere. Ha! Good times.
00:20 -- Locke is having none of this "waiting" stuff -- he's going into the hatch. Let's do this!
00:21 -- Kate said all these nice things to Jack, then basically told him she's going to do the opposite of what he's doing.
00:22 -- Um, what's with Jack's hair?
00:24 -- "I'm going to fix you." -- Jack to Sarah
00:26 -- Watching Kate get lowered into the hatch is one of those moments that isn't quite the same the second time around.
00:28 -- Although, at the time, watching her get dragged into the hatch would have probably freaked me out.
00:29 -- Jack goes into the hatch.
00:30 -- DESMOND!!!!!!!
00:33 -- "See ya in anotha life, ya?" -- Desmond to Jack. This is where re-watching really pays off. A great scene the first time, for sure. But the second time around, it was just amazing.
00:36 -- Our first tour of the hatch is awfully creepy, no?
00:40 -- "Then how come I can wiggle my toes?" -- Sarah. Do you believe in miracles now, Jack?
00:42 -- "You?" -- Jack to Desmond
I am currently in the middle of re-watching 3 of my favorite shows of all time -- I just finished season 2 of "The Wire," I am just past the halfway point of season 1 of "Deadwood," and now "Lost'). Re-watching each is fun for completely different reasons.
For "The Wire," I enjoy the show's sense of history. More so than any other show, "The Wire" never forgets what happened before and is constantly building on it. For "Deadwood," I am most curious in seeing the show's two main characters go from bitter enemies to allies over the course of three seasons.
And for "Lost" -- hell, I am still just trying to piece it all together. I am curious what questions that were raised in season 2 have been swept under the rug. I can't wait to see that island map on the blast door again -- just to see what's on it (I haven't gone back to that one in awhile).
Anyway, this episode is obviously an A -- a season premiere should do a good job setting up the season. And I'd say finding a guy inside pushing a button certainly categorizes as a good setup.
Now, when do we get Henry Gale?

Comments
Wow! Daniel is BACK! YEAAAAAAAA!
I had forgotten that Jack decided to fix his future wife instead of Shannon's dad. Maybe a bad choice in retrospect?
And I had forgot that Walt was dripping wet.(and talking backwards? really?)
OK, I will go rent season 2 so I can watch along with Daniel!
Posted by: suzie | June 18, 2008 01:58 PM
Might have been rhetorical but, we get Henry Gale in episode 14, One of Them. While Sayid & Ana-Lucia are trekking though the jungle, Ana LuLu sees Rousseau & tells Sayid. He comes up on her & says 'what are doing here Danielle?' She says 'looking for you'...she wants to show him something. Then they hear HIM, Henry Gale, yelling for help cause he's caught in one of Rousseau's nets .
I watched all 3 seasons not too long ago. I LOVE each season the same. LOST can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned.
"00:36 -- Our first tour of the hatch is awfully creepy, no?"
Actually, no it's not creepy at all. Desmond has the hook up!! He has food, a washer & dryer I would kill for & the cutest colorful cereal bowls ever. Seeing the hatch for the first time was quite pleasant for me. It's every time after that that it's creepy.
Shannon & Ana-Lucia are 2 of the most annoying components of season 2.
Daniel - you can call it: Season2 ReVisited: The Diary
Good to have the diary back!
One more note: Lakers were blown out last night. Yes, a sad day if you're a Lakers fan. They were essentially swept with a non-issue win in the middle. My poor Coach Jackson was as mad as I have ever seen him in all the years I've been watching basketball.

this is going to be fun!!!!
Anyone know what walt said backwards?
Posted by: i'm lost | June 18, 2008 04:28 PM
hey suzie q!!! how's it going? hope all's well! :)
Posted by: kat | June 18, 2008 04:29 PM
If I remember correctly he says "save the island'...I cant be 100% on that, but that's sort of what i remember reading after that episode.
Posted by: kat | June 18, 2008 04:31 PM
Sorry, I appear to have my whispers all mixed up. When Shannon sees Walt he says..."They're coming and they're close"
Posted by: kat | June 18, 2008 04:36 PM
is this the first episode of season 2? i might be able to watch them on my laptop when i have freetime or i have to wait until i come home and get out the dvds.
i cant wait to review it all though. i think i want to watch season 1 first though...

This is what I got about what Walt whispers to Shannon from Lostpedia:
Not long after he was taken off the raft, a water-drenched Walt appeared before Shannon, who had just followed a fleeing Vincent into the jungle. Shannon heard him whisper incomprehensibly, which has been ascribed to reversed or backwards speech. The translation of the speech is reportedly "Push the button. Don't push the button. Bad." Whether it was actually Walt or a vision is unclear. ("Man of Science, Man of Faith")

Do you know how long it took me to realize that your counting format was minutes and not seconds?!
I was like, Jack can't even speak that fast...
Honestly. I need to go to bed.

KAT: I second your motion for the new title: Season2 ReVisited
Deadwood: I love this show! (HBO owes me an "ending" since it was rudely canceled at a good point!) I agree with you on Seth and Al's relationship...but what about Trixie going from Crack Ho to Pretty Woman!?
P.S. Are you watching Swingtown? WOW, it's gonna be a good season, I can feel it!!

Thanks Kat for the backward whispering answer.
Lost Lover - better be on the look out for Tom.

Okay, I just started watching the episode online and I already have questions. The opening scene with Desmond in the hatch is strange to me. It seems like there are so many modern things in there compared to the other Dharma stations. I mean the kitchen sink looks brand new and shiny. The washer/dryer are definitely very new looking. AND did they ever explain what Desmond is injecting into himself or why he is doing it???
Posted by: Sus | June 19, 2008 07:23 PM
Interesting...
So to put the are Michael and Jin dead questions to rest I found this:
On the main page of Lostpedia at the top it has a hyperlink that says Main Characters. It's the first bullet right next to the WELCOME TO THE LOSTPEDIA sign. If you click on it it shows the current *state* of the main losties. By state I mean dead, off island, on island, missing/unknown, or dead in future. Well it says Michael is dead. We all figured that. But it says Jin is missing or unknow... just saying. I was right. There's no way he's dead.
Posted by: luva | June 19, 2008 09:51 PM
If I remember correctly, Desmond is injecting himself so he can keep the sickness at bay right?
Posted by: Joe | June 20, 2008 04:44 AM
So when the hatch blew, so did the serum to keep the sickness at bay, and that is why Desmond started daytripping?
Posted by: Lost Lover | June 20, 2008 06:47 AM
Well it's been heavily hinted at that the sickness is just a myth used by Kelvin to keep Desmond in the Hatch so Kelvin could leave. I think it was Desmonds reaction to turning the fail-safe and/or electromagnetism key that caused him to be "unstuck" in time.
Posted by: Joe | June 20, 2008 07:21 AM
So glad to be back with the die hards as we revisit Season 2. Love, love, love my man Locke in this show. Starting to show why he will become the leader of his own group, since the current leader is becoming annoying. And love seeing Desmond for the first time. Great scene in the stadium. Even better the second time.
And I think this is when I started to hate Jack. Could he be more annoying? I agree with Daniel. How could Jack not believe in miracles after that? Unless he thinks it was all his doing. Mr. Ego!
Can't wait for Shannon to go. Let the countdown begin. And also let the countdown begin for the entrance of Henry Gale!
Posted by: cathead67 | June 20, 2008 09:14 AM
thanks luva! I checked it out.
It also says Claire and Daniel Faraday are missing/unknown.
It says Walt "escaped" and Ben "teleported".
That site has Locke, Sawyer. Juliette, Charlotte and Miles as still on the island. It doesn't mention Bernard and Rose, but it only lists "main characters".
Are there supposed to still be nameless losties left on the island? Or did they get rid of all of them? I know some are in the raft with Daniel Faraday. Right?
Posted by: suzie | June 20, 2008 09:18 AM
Hee Hee. Daytripping! Now I've got that song stuck in my head . . .
Posted by: cathead67 | June 20, 2008 09:18 AM
Rose and Bernard are main characters, well, at least to me!
Posted by: cathead67 | June 20, 2008 09:20 AM
i think rose is very important. she knows about locke...there has to be something there.
Posted by: sarah badara | June 20, 2008 09:42 AM
oh, and remember when jack was sick? rose was all like the island makes you better. she said it made jack sick because he isnt/wasnt supposed to leave...
Posted by: sarah badara | June 20, 2008 09:43 AM
Daniel! You're back! I'm on vacation and I came to an internet hot spot just to check it, finally! A little piece of sanity in this crazy place! I loved this episode, when I get to good internet, I fully intend to watch all of these episodes. The only thing that really sucked was Ana-Lucia. She pissed me off.
Glad you're back! :)
Posted by: loveSteamyKeamy | June 20, 2008 09:56 AM
I love how Lost is a little piece of sanity. It's so insane that it's perfectly sane! : )
Posted by: cathead67 | June 20, 2008 10:02 AM
Isn't it though? I'm sitting here with one of my more crazy friends, she thinks we're all crazazy obsessed with Lost. I'm hurt, she think Lost sucks. But she thinks Keamy is, well, Steamy.
So glad to see the lost diary back up and running. Sorry about your Lakers, Daniel. That really sucks. I love sitting here on vacation doing this, it's restful. And no complete moron to bug me, just crazy friend who doesn't like Lost. Clearly I haven't done my job right. Sigh...

hi y'all!! :)...Happy Summer!
anyone have any cold weather going on? This heat is killing us.
Yes, CA is always beautiful, but OMG this is ridiculous!
Posted by: Anonymous | June 20, 2008 12:54 PM
suzie:
on lostpedia you have to click on SURVIVORS to get all the names (including rose and bernard). They MAIN CHARACTERS only gives you those that have had top billing in any episode, and i guess R&B are not in that group. The SURVIVORS list is all inclusive and lists them as on the island. HTH.
Posted by: kerry (goodfeke) | June 20, 2008 03:54 PM
The serum stuff Des injected into himself wasn't in the Hatch when it blew up anyway...Charlie found it and gave it to Claire to make sure her and Aaron would be safe from whatever the "sickness" was.
Also--I'm not sure it (the sickness) was all Kelvin's idea. After all, the underside of the Hatch was printed with 'Quarantine' (signifying that the Island, not the Hatch, was dangerous) and Danielle Rousseau mentioned that all of her team were "sick." Then, in "Maternity Leave" (I think), Claire is remembering what happened to her at the medical station with Ethan Rom and the Others. Ethan tells her they don't have enough medicine for both her and the baby, which is why they want to keep just Aaron after he's born and send her away. This may point to the 'sickness' being real in some context (or Ethan could have been lying too). Since "The Constant," I've thought it had something to do with being "unstuck" in time when leaving/returning to the Island, and that was what all of Danielle's teammates were sick of. So, maybe the medicine itself was a lie of Kelvin's and a way to prove the existence of the mystery illness to Des? I don't know...I always thought there WAS a sickness of some sort that had wreaked havoc on the Island before, though.

Anonymous-
It climbed all the way up to 72 here in northern michigan today! It finally felt like summer today! It's been about 60 for the past two weeks. I'd take that heat from ya any day!
Beej-
Good catches with the history of the serum! Ever since The Constant, I've always thought that it was a way to keep you in one place. (as in one place in time). I think it was a way to keep from what happened to the other guy on the freighter (i think he was the guy that was supposed to fix the engines) from happening.

Desmond+Jack having a conversation about miracles- it's like porn to me.

hey luva!
I just realized Anonymous 6/20 @ 12:54pm was me!
it's not even 9am & it's already hot again. :) 60 would be nice or a couple of hours.
Jonty - that's funny!
Posted by: kat | June 21, 2008 07:59 AM
kerry, thanks, again!
jonty, actually, it's kinda weird, but I guess we have to be a little weird to be so hung up on Lost.
kat, hope things cool down for you. Are you keeping the magical island baby cool?

Gack. It's raining like nobody's business here. Sucks that my family is camping. Thankfully, it's in an RV, but there's still a river running through the site. I hate camping. But I'll send some of the humidity to anyone who wants it.
Good catch on the serum, Beej. I completly forgot about it and all that went along with it. Esp. the "quarantine" thing. Awesome.
Posted by: loveSteamyKeamy | June 21, 2008 11:20 AM
lovesteamykeamy,
so you are camping with your family in the rain talking to strangers on the computer about a tv program that won't be back on for 8 months?
You rock! We used to go camping at the lake. The TV only had one fuzzy channel, and all we ever had to do when it rained was play Monopoly or cards or read. We had no computer then, or cell phones. (the OLD days)
I always brought scary books like Steven King, or trashy romance novels. My brother and I would spend hours thinking up ways to torment each other.
One year I read psycho. My Mom got really mad at me cause I wouldn't take any showers in the shower house. I would only wash in the lake.
OH, the good old days!
Have fun! some day this will be one of your good old days.
Posted by: suzie | June 21, 2008 11:46 AM
Suzie-
with the exception of of no cell phones, that sounds exactly like our family camping trips now. I watched The Blaire Witch Project on the portable DVD player on one of our trips (in the woods mind you!!!!!) and wouldn't go outside alone the rest of the trip. WAYYY SCARRY!
Posted by: luva | June 21, 2008 03:16 PM
I used to go camping with my dad and sisters, but we always stayed in cabins. He wouldn't let us bring TVs or radios or anything (no DVDs back then!) but he'd sneak into someone else's cabin to see the sports scores, the cheater!
SteamyKeamy--I feel your pain on this humidity. Today [in Ohio] it was 85, hot and relentless. Could barely move, it was so oppressive. Then somehow, it started to hail. How the heck do chunks of ice fall in the middle of an eighty-degree day?
LOST diary fans in Iowa and Missouri--be careful! I hope you're all safe!
Posted by: Beej | June 21, 2008 07:12 PM
You want humidity come on down here to Baton Rouge, LA...oh my.
I say we all pool our funds together and try to get our own plane to Hawaii and crash/show up on Lost island...just an idea.
Posted by: sarah badara | June 21, 2008 08:16 PM
OK sarah badara, I am in. But I get first dibs on Sawyer!
or if our plane doesn't crash, Hawaii wouln't be too bad.
Posted by: suzie | June 21, 2008 09:25 PM
Talking about camping...we used to camp in tents alot when my oldest son was young.
One night, we had to camp on a hill because it was pretty crowded. I might have had one or two beers. Late at night I woke up and had to pee. The bathrooms were really far away and I didn't want to leave my sleeping son. So I just went up behind the tent (where no one could see me) and peed.
The pee ran straight down hill, right into my tent. Duh!
We moved over to the other side of the tent and the next morning I blamed it on stupid drunks.
campers are a pain, but tents really suck!
Posted by: suzie | June 21, 2008 09:34 PM
come to florida it is 92 and the clouds are growing, the condensation is running down the windows. it is miserable hot. hawaii sounds good and i want to look at sayid all day.
Posted by: i'm lost | June 22, 2008 07:12 AM
I'm lost - you've got us beat :(
It is currently 81 degrees in Burbank, CA with about 40% humidity!...it's 8:30AM! Fun Times.
Hopefully we can get some relief at the beach today. Sun block, don't forget the sunblock...!
I am in on that Hawaii trip for sure. Me & my Magical Island Baby, of course!
My husband got me into camping. Never went as a kid. Palm Springs was as close to camping as I got as a kid! Imagine my surprise when I found out hotels with room service wasn't camping.
I really like it now. :)...I would love for my M.I.B to enjoy camping.
Posted by: kat | June 22, 2008 07:37 AM
I've never been a good camper. But now I'm home, in my own room, with a DOOR!!!! I love my family, but I love my privacy. My worst trip was in a tent, where it was cold (55 degrees, I get cold easily), and it rained. By the end of the weekend, I had no long pants that were fully dry anymore, I had to wear capris. And my shampoo exploded in my sleeping bag. I've never camped in a tent since that day.
And now that I'm home, I'm going to rewatch Man of Science, Man of Faith.
Sign me up for the trip to Hawaii! Any chance that the island might have not let Keamy die? If so, I got dibs on him! :)
I hung out with friends on the trip more this past week, but I needed the sanity of the Lost Diary, it kept me from snapping.
Posted by: loveSteamyKeamy | June 22, 2008 10:19 AM
I'm up for the Hawaii trip! I would LOVE to go there. I got dibs on Desmond. He's fine... and to my knowledge unmarried. But don't quote me on that. I really have no idea. He really is one of the sexier guys on that show.

sarah badara,
you might have to share Jack with kat. Isn't she the "I heart Jack" person?
but, you called it first.
I never could figure out your Christian thing anyway.
Tell your momma we said hi!
luva,
the Blaire witch project? That movie still gives me the creeps! I read the book "the Exorcist" when I was pregnant. Big mistake. Never read real scarry stuff when your hormones are all jacked up!

Hey, can Daniel come with us on the plane?
Hey Daniel, ya wanna go with us to Hawaii? And maybe our plane will crash and we can all be losties!
You could have Kate, or Juliette, or Charlotte, or whoever. Cause we'll have all the guys tied up! (well, not literally tied up, or, well..maybe!)
Anyway, we figure the island will have everybody back by then.
We can all be each other's constants!

Did anyone notice how when Kate was going down the hatch, she started to panic for a minute and counted? I think that was from the series pilot, when she was sewing Jack up, and he told her that story, but I can't remember. I rewatched the episode last night, and was reminded of how annoying Shannon really was. I think that was the one good think Ana Lucia did, killing her, she really got on my nerves. This was as good an episode the second time around as it was when it first aired. I especially loved the stadium part, I was just as freaked as the first time.

sarah badara - I just saw that you asked if you can have Jack--I thought that was so cute that you asked, but
I WILL fight you for him!! (heehee)
I thought it was understood that I heart him!
You can look when we get to Hawaii, but please, don't touch. :)
and suzie - you can't just give my man away! :)...
you guys are funny!
loveSteamyKeamy - yeah, in the pilot when Kate is sewing up Jack she asks him how he does it, how he's seems not scared...and he tells her a story about when he was in surgery & he made the wrong cut & all her nerves started spilling out of her like angel hair pasta. He was scared that she was going to die. So he let the fear in, but ONLY for 5 seconds...and the rest as they say...
That also comes up again when Jack is performing surgery on Ben & he makes a cut he's not supposed to (on purpose) then talks to Kate on walkie & tells her in 1 hour call me & tell me the story I told you when we first met...
he's yelling DO YOU REMEMBER!...she says YES! YES I REMEMBER!!!...I liked that scene :)
Happy Monday...?

Hey-I want Richard! That way I know I will always have a supply of mascara & eyeliner!!! So count me in on the Hawaii thing, soon as the first snow storm hits here in MN-should probably be around late August the way this season going!!!!
Posted by: Tootsie1 | June 23, 2008 09:39 AM
Sorry it's so cold up there, Tootsie1. Right now, the only cold we're getting here in MD is from the arctic air conditioners. I'm FREEZING at work today.
Thanks, Kat. I completely forgot about the surgery with Ben, and I now remember saying "I'm never gonna look at angel hair pasta the same again." That prediction came true.
Can I at least get some of Richard's eye makeup? And his anti-aging secret? If I can keep the face I have now, boy, I'll be happy. The trip sounds fun. Let's go!

I've got an awesome aunt and uncle we can crash with in Hawaii. They live down the road from Pierce Brosnan. I kid you not.
And I call Mr. Friendly, but you already knew that.
Posted by: Beej | June 26, 2008 02:10 PM
Sounds like an awesome trip.
And I am sooooo jealous of your aunt and uncle, Beej, living down the road from Pierce Brosnan. Must be fun.
Lets go, guys! Just remember, if you see Keamy wandering around the island, call me. He is so mine.

oh i really love to go camping! lol even in bad weather.
the only part that sucks is going to bed in freezing weather and waking up sweating. i always freak out when i get too hot and feel suffocated. i basically have a panic attack because i can't unzip my hoodie.
but other than that it's so much fun. it's great to go somewhere and have absolutely nothing to do and just chill with your friends for a few days. beven when you have days off at home you always have things to do. When you're camping there's no laundry, no computer, no phones, just a fire and friends... :D

Ever think that the reason Jack worked so hard to save Boone was because he made the connection between Shannon and the fact that he hadn't helped her dad, and he died, leaving Shannon alone. With Jack's whole guilt thing, that could have been a factor...
