Jughead
Being a fan of "Lost" is a lot like being a fan of Prince. Let me explain.
Both have hugely devout followings that speak languages all their own. Non-fans don't see why us fans still follow them. But we know better.
But here's my point -- within our community, criticism is often looked at as treason. I've spent my fair share of time on Prince-related message boards and let me tell you, dissenters are often met with hostility. I hate to break it to you, but Prince does make a bad song/album every now and again. It doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it, just means it wasn't up to par.
Same goes with "Lost." As a "Lost" fan, I was supposed to LOVE the premiere, but I didn't. And, of course, a lot of commenters took me to task for it. HOW DARE I??? True criticism, the criticism that is truly worth paying attention to, comes from people who truly love something. Who else would you trust to tell you the truth than the people who care most about you?
I hope that made sense.
Anyway, for all you "Lost" Diary newbies, here's how it goes: I gather with a group of friends watching "Lost," writing what happens on the show as it happens, and throwing in my two cents along the way. The gang is back together -- I am chilling at Ari and Lauren's place (yes, they live together now) and it feels like old times again. Let's roll:

9:00 -- Efren Salonga!!! God bless closed captioning.
9:01 -- The sight of a pregnant Penny just made every woman watching go "Awwww" in unison.
9:02 -- It's a boy!
9:03 -- We're back on the boat with Desmond and his son, which means we have a Desmond Desmond-centric episode on our hands. They are by far the best, so my excitement level has just been tripled.
9:04 -- If you had to bet, when it's all said and done, do you think things end well for Penny and Desmond? I don't think the producers would do that to us, but sometimes ... I don't know.
9:05 -- Is Faraday incapable of speaking above a loud whisper?
9:07 -- "You just couldn't stay away, could you?" -- random chick with a gun who rolls with a posse of archers. Seriously, archers?
9:10 -- "I don't understand how this works anymore than you do." -- Everyone. Whoops, I mean Desmond.
9:11 -- "I'll be back by dark. And then I'm done, forever. I promise." -- Desmond. Hang on a second, I have to look up the definition of the word FORESHADOWING.
9:12 -- Lauren thinks Juliet got botox over the summer. I don't agree. Thoughts?
9:13 -- I took Latin in high school. It is doing me exactly as much good now as it did in high school – none whatsoever. Come to think of it, it has NEVER done me any good. Thank you, New York City Board of Education!
9:14 -- Miles is having one of his episodes, which apparently means they just walked over a fresh grave – four dead U.S. soldiers. Nothing unusual about that.
9:15 -- It's an old school Others camp, yet Richard is the same age as always. Again, nothing unusual about that.
9:19 -- Desmond is trying to find Faraday's mom, but apparently there is no record of any Faraday having ever worked at Oxford. It's like he's been erased ... from existence. What movie is that line from for 10 points? Answer later.
9:22 -- "Rumor has it he was trying to send rat's brains back through time." -- creepy janitor. Just the brains? Really?
9:25 -- Of all the ways to tell a woman you love her, doing it while trying to convince a guy who never ages that you're with the American military and trying to defuse a hydrogen bomb gone awry has got to be the most romantic way I have ever heard of.
9:26 -- What other things are taught in Others 101? Polar bear hunting? Smoke monster evasion techniques?
9:27 -- "Is Richard there?" -- Juliet
9:28 -- "Because he's one of my people." -- Locke
9:32 -- So best I can figure, somehow Daniel drove his wife/girlfriend insane, then left her.
9:33 -- Ok, now it seems Mr. Widmore was funding Faraday and is now taking care of Teresa. Quick question -- if Desmond keeps meeting these people who know Faraday, and he's looking for Faraday's mom (not him), why doesn't he ask any of them where she is?
9:34 -- Faraday told Charlotte he meant what he said. Nerd love is hot.
9:35 -- "You think he knows this island better than I do?" -- some Other idiot. Yes, Other idiot, I think he does.
9:36 -- Yes, I heard Sawyer's "I'm an Other, you're an Other reunion" line, I just didn't think it was funny.
9:38 -- That's kind of a huge bomb you got there Faraday. Best of luck.
9:43 -- The name of the bomb is Jughead.
9:44 -- I don't know a lot about hydrogen bombs, but I am pretty sure they aren't supposed to have cracks in them.
9:45 -- Trying to explain to someone that you're from the future is not as easy as it sounds. In fact, it can make you sound quite crazy.
9:46 -- "Are they from the future too?" -- Leader of the Other Archer Brigade
9:47 -- Desmond just barged right into Mr. Widmore's office. What do you call it in when something that was foreshadowed begins to come to fruition?
9:48 -- Widmore tells Desmond Faraday's mother is in Los Angeles -- which just about clinches the fact that she is Mrs. Hawking.
9:49 -- Widmore tells Desmond to find Faraday's mom and then go back in hiding -- which actually makes sense. He's still worried about Ben killing Penny.
9:50 -- "Jacob sent me." -- Locke
9:51 -- "Put the gun down, WIdmore." -- Richard. Shhh, if you listen carefully you can hear my mind blowing.
9:56 -- Desmond named the baby Charlie. Kinda cool. Oh, the answer from before was "Back to the Future."
9:57 -- Locke just told Richard to go visit him as a kid -- which, of course, we know Richard does. Very nice little moment.
9:58 -- Before Richard can tell Locke anything, the island conveniently skips again. Don't you hate when that happens?
9:59 -- Charlotte's not looking so hot. Is it just me or does she need a Constant right about now?
Ok, before I get into anything else, I have to share a Faraday’s mom/Mrs. Hawking connection I found while trolling through Lostpedia after the show.
So I went to Lostpedia to check what the Leader of the Other Archer Brigade's name was – it’s Ellie. Ellie can be short for Eloise. What is Mrs. Hawking's first name? Yup, Eloise. So, if Mrs. Hawking is Faraday’s mom, then the Leader of the Other Archer Brigade's who was marching Faraday around with a gun (who he said looked familiar to him) is actually his mom. Again, "Back to the Future" rears its head. Great Scott!
I give tonight's episode a solid B (unlike last week’s pity B, not to be confused with pity sex). I thought there was a lot more of people running around and doing nothing, but this week at least we got a few cool revelations. I had always though Widmore had been on the island before (I think he did the same thing Ben did -- move the island -- and, like Ben, has been looking for it ever since), but to see the young Widmore was just cool.
And you had to love the scene with Locke and Richard that explains the episode where Richard keeps popping up in young Locke's life -- though it is telling that young Locke didn't pick the compass like we supposed to. Is Locke not the island savior we thought he was?
So here is my question to you this week -- I am a huge fan of shows/movies that play with the concept of time ("Memento" being the most famous). But the "Lost" time travel arc is becoming a tad distracting. Thoughts?
Don't forget to send in your questions for the LDQA. I hope this week's gave the newbie's an idea of how it works. Anything and everything is on the table – ask away! Send me a question at questions@thelostdiary.com and please put LDQA in the subject line.
