I am glad you waited to write this week. Sorry for all the hate you received. I love your blog! Thanks for taking the time to write it and get us all involved in it.

As to the episode, it was nice to see how Sayid ended up building houses. Ben is a total mastermind. As to little Ben being dead, I don't think so because the Island heals or Jack will again have to save Ben? I really can't figure out where this season is going to go. It will be fun to watch the writers walk on some walls to get it all together!

That makes sense about the writers, because certain episodes have a different feel. Hurley episodes are way more fun, even when they don't tell us much. Sawyer and Hurley together are the best.
I have a stupid question: how would you feel if the final episode killed everyone. Just boom. They are all dead? Would you feel cheated? Would that be the only solution, because how screwed up will these people be once this is done? Or is island life the life for them? Never go back to the mainland? I am only asking for opinions, NOT spoilers. For me, it would depend on how they went boom, but I think that would be too final for me, and feel like a cop out. I think...

Completely agree with your grade - the episode didn't do too much for me either. However, I did enjoy the old school setup of an episode being one character centric, I've been missing that this season!

TRON... really, now you're ok with doing a sequel? When was the last time this was shown on TV? Would anyone under, say 35, understand TRON now?

on lostpedia for this episode, under the "bloopers and continuity errors" section, it says sayid's father's accent was egyptian, not iraqi, which is very distinguishable. interesting that it's egyptian, where the origins of the hostiles may be....perhaps sayid is a long lost OTHER??

@spacemonkey - not a stupid question... I would be unhappy if all went 'boom.' I'd also be way unhappy if everyone got kumbaya and went back to civilization - some tried before and it wasn't working for them...

It shouldn't be all rosy - that's just not LOST. But for everyone to die? nah. Maybe die in the 21st century sense and return to, say, the Black Rock era or before? A little Hannibal time? Times where they REALLY came from?

About the episode - no way little Ben is dead. Jack is going to save him. I'm hanging on to the idea that the past can't be changed (maybe altered a little, but the final outcomes remain the same).

I really don't think Ben can be dead because everything that happened already wouldn't have happened and that would screw up the whole story right?

I don't think this is the real Daniel anymore writing this blog. The one I fell in love with reading; was witty, funny and insightful!

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate you still doing this blog and I come here and read every week, but seriously if you would put this post today up against one a couple years back..you would certainly see the difference in writing style.

i don't think ben is dead either, but i wonder if jack will save him. that seems the obvious route, but new jack is kinda like...whatev, man. i think there would have to be some major incentive from him to save ben's life.

I don't think Jack will save little Ben - he's likely thinking all will be right if he doesn't. (Cuz sometimes Jack doesn't think it all through like we do!)

Someone though - from Ajira likely needs Ben - I think he's got one or more tabs on the kid(s) and someone will want him to be alive.

Juliet... there's a thought ... she saves him, Jack goes ballistic, and he kills her... yeah, I like that. Then James can go back to being Sawyer and exact revenge (ala his Sawyer dad) on Jack.

the one part i am still seeking input is the logo on those boxes etc in the russian's room that sayid shot in the beginning. it is holding a clue i think
about more clues given and my observations:
when ben went to visit sayid in dominican republic and told him "I looked" when asked how he found him. remember ben ALWAYS has a plan.
Is Sayid a born killer? i think there are those are capable of killing and those that can't...whether out of necessity or other

What music was playing when they approached Oldham's teepee? the lyrics were like "i can't get you out of my.." my closed caption wasn't working on this episode for some reason. it usually tells me who is singing it...another clue to a certain extent.
oh yeah when sayid and ben and gang were at the dock at night one of the boats was stenciled "Illusion" hmm what is that to mean?

when were tasers invented? have to look that one up or consult CAM again :)

I for one enjoyed this episode for the little things. i think if you rewatch and pause and look or listen to the things in the background it will give you little clues or insight.

At first i thought at the bounty hunter gal (illea or seomthing like that) was hired by ben but then when ben came on board i rethought it...still thinking about that. could be he subcontracted through a middleman?? :)

Sayid was drinking MacCutcheon (sp?) - the whisky that widmore was drinking when wouldn't give desmond when he asked to marry penny and that charlie and hurley plied desmond with at the beach to get him drunk. and that widmore had by his bedside when ben went to visit.

I like that sayid asked the bounty hunter -how do you know so much about temptation? another bible reference for ssarah

the LCD scene was great or whatever it was. sayid telling what each station is and radinsky's mind being blown. i guess it must be pre orchid and time traveling bunnyland -either chang keeping a secret etc.
sayid cackling about oldham commenting "maybe i should use 1/2 dropper? oops. and sayid's response "you used exactly enough." sawyer rolling eyes - loved it best scene!! i will def rewatch that one. so ??? does horace know what is going on at stations or is it chang's eyes only?

i liked the exchange between kate and juliet at the garage whatever. really natural the way juliet is relieved kate knows and kate jokes that hurley told her.

I want to know more about this Rule of Law that Horace refers to. I know it is in reference to the Book of Law that Richard showed lil' Locke. ooh idea - have a lil losties show where they all cross paths as kiddos - spinoff material for saturday morning :)

i know people think amy is creepy/scary but they are trying to show you that it is all about perspective. from hers - she had a bag put over her head and hubby killed. of course we don't know her backstory but she is trying to protect her baby - i think most people can relate to that - not justifying killing sayid just showing a different view

tho sawyer did call phil a "ding a ling".
maybe sawyer's nice teeth are because Bernard did make it and he worked on his teeth. he is a dentist remember?
i like how sawyer tells kate how sayid just gave me a earful of crap about his damn purpose. hee hee poor sawyer just wants to play house in peace.

ugh i'm stumped on the charlotte and annie connection. miles has to be baby change tho. he had the nosebleeds and we haven't seen other asians on the island that i can recollect.

i'm going to preface this by saying i don't THINK annie and kate are the same person, but there are just so many similarities...

kate's middle name is annie, and she has used it as an alias. kate remembered the apollo bars when she saw them in the hatch, annie gave an apollo bar to ben when he got to the island. annie LOOKS like a little kate, with the brown hair and freckles. we're starting to think that all the people that flashed back to '77 may have past ties with the island...

NOW i'm going to say that there's no way annie and kate are the same person, because you would think kate would remember that and it would influence her actions much differently. i just think the similarities are interesting.

-- There was something that Damon Lindelof said that I thought summed up "Lost" perfectly and, to be quite honest, gave me goosebumps. Someone asked the panel if the writers ever wrote themselves into a situation they then realized they couldn't get out of. Damon answered, "Sometimes when we back ourselves into a corner, we just walk up the side of the wall." Wow.

Daniel don't let the haters get to you. Life and death gets in the way of fun stuff. I don't know when I'll watch Lost this week. I have a wake and funeral Weds and Thurs, and friends staying at my house, so even if I got home early enough on Weds to watch, it wouldn't be the same with them there...they don't watch. My hub is a week behind too, so we might just have to do a marathon after all is done on Thursday.

Ok Daniel, to give an episode devoted mostly to Sayid a "D" hurts me to the quick. I know all the women are in love with Sawyer, yeah he is sexy and all. But Sayid is to die for. Everytime I see his face and that body, OMG doesnt matter what the writers have him do. just let him do it. (little Sayid was dorky".

Back to the story: Ben was shot!!!! Ben was shot!!! doesnt matter if he is dead or not. How many times has someone had a gone to his face and he talked them out of pulling the trigger. I think I have yelled 'Shoot-em!!!" over the last few years more thatn I 've pined over Sayid. The mere fact that FINALLY....... someone shot Ben/henry Gale is enough to rate at least a B. I give it an A, cause Sayid did it.

As far as what did we learn, or are we any closer to understanding what the hell is going on on this show, no we are all still 'lost". but "ben was shot!!!!!" Can't get any better than that.

Cammies and victoria - regarding Juliet's OB/GYN doctoring abilities to take care of bullet removal or emergency surgery - doctors in training learn that stuff in med school/internships, regardless of their eventual specialties. Even doctors that go on to be opthamalogists, for example, have had to do emergency room duty and treat all kinds of traumatic bodily injuries in their internships before they go on to be eye surgeons. Sorry if I'm being a know-it-all.

And, Teri, I must say....you have impeccable taste as Sayid has been and will continue to be the hottest 815-er/handcuffed 316-er/alleged Hostile on that island...bar none! i loooooooove dirty sweaty island sayid, but i am NOT a fan of his off-island grooming habits. when he is killing people for ben and his hair is all striaght and it looks like he curled the ends with a curling iron, yuck. doesn't suit him. in fact, i prefer the dirty sweaty island versions of all the men (and women too!)

Ben can't be dead, I think this is when Ben "realizes" the island has special powers but the questions is who saves him, Jack or Juliet?? Interesting indeed. Also, DUDE this episode gets at least a B because it was Sayid!! The thought that Ben hired the Bounty hunter is interesting and I have a feeling that may turn out to be the case. Here is my question...Why did Jin call Sawyer and did anyone else think it was odd that Jin was so insistent about calling Sawyer??? Sayid and Sawyer are awesome, can someone just shoot crybaby Jack now?? And where is Faraday?

@Lost in la -- probably the first. Sometimes I like a bigger show just to watch the crowd. The 2nd show was great too. The 3rd sucked for most of it, then was great for the last 5 songs.

@Daniel - Welcome back! Your unsupervised children were squabbling - let it be. As for who hired the bounty hunter, I don't think it was Ben, he seemed to surprised to see Sayid on the plane. I think she was hired by Eloise!

i was very jealous that my bro got into see purple rain (rated R) he wasn't 17 but got in anyway. i got denied and had to wait to see it on video. he went to see it like 3 times i think.

i think jin prolly called sawyer just out of habit - they have been together for 3 years and fall into patterns. check in with LaFleur is prolly just second nature. i wonder in the beginning how many times they slipped and called him sawyer.

Sayid told Jin that Sawyer had helped him escape, so Jin probably thought that he was just keeping Sawyer in the loop, but it did seem a little weird. Could be because Jin knew that Sawyer DID NOT help with the escape, so he thought something was up. Either way, he got cold-cocked.

I must respectfully disagree with the person who said Sayid is not hot off-island. While I agree he is hotter on-island, I also feel he is VERY hot off-island. I love the straight hair and leather jacket it makes him look more dangerous!

I have to agree with the posters on this forum... you seem to have lost your "spark" with Lost. It's like a stale marriage. I'm sorry that Lost has let you down. Personally, I think this season is fantastic, and I really liked this episode. You seem to be focused mainly on the plot versus the characters as well. Here's to hoping this Wendesday's episode gets you all fired up again.

i was thinking while watching. it seems like bounty hunter woman looked kind of like Nadia to a certain extent. it seems she would be chosen by ben to manipulate sayid (he knows his type - tho shannon didn't fit it) and ben had her on backup so if sayid didn't agree to go back that he had her on standby tho hired by someone else posing as the family of the guy on the golf course.

For the record, I have seen every single Lost when it originally aired.

Boy have I missed my Lost Diary fix... but as soon as I saw that awesome Prince video you posted, I got over it, Dude! That was just about one of the coolest things ever!! True Prince fans completely understand! Glad you're back; I agree, this episode wasn't all that, but shooting Little Ben was a shocker. Here's my thoughts... he doesn't die - Julianne saves him and therefore, history doesn't change.

for the record - paisley park was my favorite album. waited in the parking lot for the release. cassette - wow that dates me! agree with the "D" only the last few minutes saved this episode. i think the title of the upcoming epi is telling - what happened - happened and happened before.

Hurray !! Daniel is back. We missed you, appreciate you and thank you for your witty take on the LOST episodes.

Rewatch:
- It seems Sayid needs a purpose in life and in this episode his purpose revolves around killing and being a killer
- when Horace brought in the clippers, I was wishing he would cut Sayid’s nasty long finger nails!!
- I don’t get why Juliet and Sawyer are content with settling in the 70’s, making the best of the situation?
- Phil is a creepy idiot.
- On one hand I want Sayid to just join them, on the other – I totally get why he is resisting settling into that life
- and now his purpose is apparently building homes for other people, way better than killing people, wonder how he got to this place in his life
- I am not sure completely I agree with Daniel on this, I don’t think he likes killing all people, just the bad ones
- Sayid coulda taken Phil and Radzinsky easily, that was a flawed scene
- Sayid drinks with his pinky in the air, how debonair. I guess you gotta be when you drink the expensive stuff :)
- these people remember their flight numbers really well, I never remember my flight numbers
- Something is up with Amy, but I honestly think that in this scene she is just s protective mother who had lost her first husband to the “hostiles”
- Sayid’s 2 loves: women and murder
- Again, Sayid needs purpose and on the island it has to do with Murder: Ben’s murder
- I love Sawyer as a leader, it looks good on him, He has come a long way since first crashing on the island as a selfish con man
- I don’t think bounty hunter lady is privy to the ultimate plan for that plane

I just have to say: I really like the actor they hired to play young Ben. As evil a character as Ben is, they needed a kid that could be both the evil in training Ben and the kid you feel bad for.

i think a D is a little harsh. like if you get a D in your major in college it doesn't count toward your major...
the scenes between sayid and ben both big and little were excellent and well acted. even the smaller scenes were very well done and had small reveals. i agree nothing big was divulged until lil ben was shot and there was no locke so that is disappointing but the sayid on LSD was a classic and i think everyone needs to rewatch to appreciate it.
so do we think ben killed nadia? i wish i didn't think so but...who am i kidding. we have no proof that widmore has killed anyone - he just had the guy from ben's team roughed up?? that we saw on tape.
faraday has to be off time travelling somehow. do we know when the orchid was constructed? CAM?

Letsnotsay - About Faraday - I'm worried about him. Getting a bad feeling that his character is now but a pathetic brain-addled version of his former intelligent, scientific self, muddling about who knows where. Either that or he somehow managed to flash to another time and is up to who knows what. I really want to know what happened to him.

I thought it was odd that Horace and others didn't think or say really anything about Sayid knowing the names of the stations while he was "under". They just kinda blew it off as he had too much, yet he was right about it all.

Victoria - Yes, more time traveling for Faraday would be appropriate. About those "subs". Don't you think that the subs are a ruse - like a cover up for how people really are transported by the DI from the rest of the world to the island and visa versa? People are sedated, transported and then lead to believe they were traveling on the sub. I think they had a sub as a prop but that people were transported via another means - like one of those time/space holes accessible via the Lamp Post or something. I know this has been mentioned before and I totally buy into it.

how else would tom have traveled to see Michael. and to recruit juliet etc. i think they have to be sedated due to the roughness on the way there ie the plane, the copter, boats being smacked around on the way there. obviously someone has to pilot but if you aren't prepared it would be pretty alarming. i think the talk about it being a ruse was to throw people off guard...

Space Monkey, and anyone else w/ Spoiler site to share: Please tell me some good spoiler sites. I know you (Space Monkey) vowed to resist sharing your spoilers. However, I am asking nicely and lately I seek but get no real satisfaction. Someone mentioned a site that reveals what happens at the show's end and I don't remember who posted it. They did say that they were kind of bummed about having read it and didn't much like it. That makes me really want to read it now! I am lazy and shamelessly want to tag onto what you have already researched. Thanks in advance.

Daniel, I have to agree with many of the posts...We appreciate you doing this. You do have a life. And maybe we get a little too excited to read your blog so we miss you when we are busy living life!! I think "D" was harsh, as well. I am a huge Sayid fan so all the Sayid made it great for me. @ owchie: the spoiler site I check most {and sometimes wish I had'nt is Dark UFO}..but if you just google "Lost" you can come up w/hundreds of options..just have to check them out..if you dare! LOL

re: The Orchid; we do not know when it was built, I am assuming the 70's since we see Dr. Chang the same age that we see him later checking Jack into DI, also Daniel is there which I assume is in the 3 years from 1974-1977.

After that, he always knew the island wouldn't let him die. (Smug Face)

This is my first time posting, but I have been reading this for the last year. Maybe longer. Anyway not sure if Ben will die right away, but I do think he might die this season. I think it's about "Good vs Evil" and Ben is evil. I think that Locke is probably the true leader of the island and is considered a good guy. The island knows Locke is the good guy.

thanks CAM. i went to lostpedia and did a little research and didn't find anything specific either. i may go and rewatch the epi with daniel down the hold with chang and see if there are any signs of what year (like songs being played or whatnot) maybe the scene when chang is getting up out of bed etc. maybe if we compute how old miles is (since i believe the baby must be miles at this point) and count backward...we would get the year....hmm just a thought.
if i didn't have to play tooth fairy and nurse a baby i could accomplish more LOST tasks. sigh ;)

I don't mind when you post...we all have lives. I must say though, I do agree that you seem to have lost the spark. I still like the recaps, or I wouldn't show up everyweek, but the analysis is definitely not as on target. There's rarely mention of any of the "little" things that most people miss or connecting the dots from previous epis. I miss the old Daniel posts too.

oh yeah and for those that are interested there is a facebook group that is more discussion and less conflict oriented. just search the lost diary

i dont buy into the perspective that there are individuals that feel that they own anything. they have a zeal for their perspective (ooh redirecting back to that again) and sometimes they have blinders on when it comes to that.

that it is perceived as ownership again reflects back upon the person that sees it that way. that is part of the message that is attempted to be communicated by the lost gang. IMO of course

i post on both but see that this reaches a wider audience and my opinion is the more brains that are working together feed the project immensely. i am sure the writers read various blogs etc to gather data and use to assist their cause. it is only natural in order for them to walk up the wall...

Wow, I really am out of it. I just signed up to join a facebook group named after my own site ... that I didn't even know about. I am going to have cut back on some other shit and step up my "Lost" game.

embrace and experience all of them and don't allow yourself to feel conflicted about it. you birthed a heck of a "baby" here and you are allowed to have your own life. now if there are things that you feel are wasting that time - your choice but from my perspective you have some cool shit to attend to and you grab it by the horns because you don't know how long it will last. just fill us in from time to time and do your best to give the attention to the epi at hand and i think for the most part you will have the appreciation of the masses.

you can never make everyone happy or be informed about everything. delegation is life is key from my point of view althought individuals pride keeps them from being successful in that realm.

wowsers that was a lot of deepitude - i told you about hanging with toddlers that just say yeah and no - we are working on the rest.

Thanks for the blog daniel..I have been reading it from the beginning but rarely post but I wanted to say please don't apologise for having a fun/exciting weekend..at least you return to fullfill our lost diary needs and that in the end is all that counts. I feel the same about this past weeks epi..I figured from the begiining Iknew where it was heading but still w/ that said my mouth did hang open when lil ben got shot..I am truly looking forward to seeing the consequences of that action and how it will be played out! ps. Prince so owes you a guitar! :) As always thanks for the blog

just watched last weeks epi again. anyone catch that little ben said " i really hated him"? past tense when talking to sayid about his father?

@tootsie - I think little ben can die and big ben still be alive - I posted theories on the other blog. Basically, if it's parallel timelines - it can be both.

Also, if you still are inclined to believe you cannot return unless dead after turning the wheel or being a leader... then, big ben can now return, as his little self has died.

If Ben remembers that Sayid tried to kill him - I don't believe we would have seen the reaction we did on the Ajira flight. I think the shooting is a new twist - one that Ben didn't know cuz it's all about course correction.

So while Ben is 'all knowing' I think he also has to learn as it plays out each time.

I am sorry I missed your post last night. I couldn't disagree more (respectfully for sure) and am curious about why you feel that way. If anything, I believe LOST presents the stories of many people who live their lives "beyond good and evil". Having seen Ben's back story (abusive father, etc) how is he more "evil" and Locke more "good" when both them are cold blooded murderers? Why forgive Locke for his transgressions and not Ben? In fact, everyone of the main characters, including Hurley, have killed people as an end to some mean (okay, in Hurley's case accidental, but everyone else there is motive and intent in their actions.) I don't think you can have degrees of more evil or less evil in humans if you buy into humans being "evil". There is a pretty good argument that evil is just something created by mankind, that it really does not exist. Good or bad, sure, I am a good bowler or a bad bowler, but good and evil, don't know, don't think so. Anyone have any thoughts on this? It bugs me everytime I see someone get into that good/evil mindset and I want to understand. I am open to discussion here. I have brought this up before and no one has given me an answer.

I couldn't agree with you more. Now, I know not everyone here is religious and if you are, not everyone is Christian. But if you look at the varying degrees of "evil" in the eyes of God from the christian standpoint - there are no "degrees" good is good and evil is evil. There is also redemption in the christian faith.

I agree - no one on this show is "good" because they have all resorted to some sort of evil behavior. I don't think this show is about the war between good and evil but rather between 2 evils who want complete control.

That being said, I also think that some of the characters are looking for redemption - like Sawyer. It seems that his journey has been to "make right" the wrongs that he has done in vengeance.

@ssarah, this is were you would jump in with will to power and perspective of life, I am lobbing you a big old softball here. (You are probably at class and I have run myself).

@flashest monk - it's the same as black and white - good and evil. And reality and humanness are just not that simple.

As I've said many times before, the actions of the Lost characters do not make them a noble lot - but it is how the writers get us to care that makes this show fabulous - at least for me.

That said, I honestly do not believe in 'evil' except as a true exception that comes from a verra dark place and is not human.

Having said this - I do not believe any of the characters are 'evil.' Some of their deeds maybe interpreted by human standards as evil - but that they, body and soul, are evil? No. Their free will offers them a myriad of choices - and some of their choices have been poor.

I, for one, can feel for someone who kills to save someone else, more easily than feeling for someone who chose to kill to get them out of a fix (like a burglary gone wrong). But in both instances, the acts are the same, though done for different reasons.

I also believe one does not become inherently bad simply because of an abusive background. There is choice made to become that. Ben chose to become a murderer etc. His father did not CAUSE it. His mother did not CAUSE it. Ben chose to have their actions affect him in a negative manner.

Now might there be something so dark and otherworldly that it may be evil on the island? Possibly. Smokie seems to be a conscious being...

I got pulled into a meeting so this may not make sense... I'll restate Flashest Monk if need be.

@CAM- I totally agree about redemption. Big theme on lost, especially in the first couple of seasons with all the flashbacks, Mr Eko, Ana Lucia, etc. Would Ben be more sympathetic if he eventually seeks redemption.

I'm not sure I agree with the two evils theory (Widmore vs Ben I assume you mean) because its no different then everyone (take Locke for example) taking questionable actions toward an end or goal. This is were the will to power concept comes in, this would be the argument for their doing what they are doing to realize their values or goals. Regarding Sawyer and vengenance, if you excuse that in the name of redemption, then you have to excuse Ben for acts related to Alex's death and Sayid for acts related to Nadia's death.

@cam and flashest monk - I've pondered the theory that these characters are here now to correct the actions of their forebearers. I'm not sure if I characterized it as redemption - or correcting.

Perhaps on-island affairs have been askew for quite some time - and course correcting is an ongoing undoing/repair through generations.

I'm not sure the point of Lost is to redeem and forgive the heinous actions - but to resolve what has been not right.

But I will say again, to provide this level of discussion, and the compassion we all feel at one point or another for these flawed characters - is a tribute to the Lost writers.

OH, Daniel belongs to the same Facebook group that I do, now!! And he held Prince's guitar, which, by belonging to the same FB group, makes it almost like I held Prince's guitar. Wait til I tell my cat! That is so cool. Oh, and having you in the FB group is cool, too, Daniel.

I think you guys come up with some VERY interesting theories and ideas. I wonder sometimes if the writers put as much thought into aspects of the show as we do? Not being derogatory, just that they are busy focusing on big things, and Sayid's nail length or pinky raising might not be it. ((Or might be and I am an idiot!!) I love that, because now I will totally look at his hands to see his nails, probably get totally distracted by that, because I never noticed. And that, gentle readers, is why I love you. You notice things I never would. Thank you.

@CAM and Fanolost and everyone else. One last thing and I have to run (keep posting- I will read your comments). I was re-reading Nietzche's beyond Good and Evil last night after Orchid's post. Nietzche really rags on the Christian "moralizing" and when he gets into Will to Power. He speaks to the role of philosophers and scholars and in a chapter "Peoples and Countries" really slams England. "They are not a philosopphical race- the English: Bacon represents an attack on the philosophical spirit generally, Hobbes, Hume and Locke, an abasement, and a depreciation of the idea of a "philosopher" for more than a century....What is lacking in England and has always been lacking...real power of intellect, real depth of intellectual perception, in short philosophy. It is characteristic of such an unphilosophical race to hold on firmly to Christianity-- the need its discipline for moralizing and humanizing."

Thought it was interesting that two of the English philosophers he slams are Hume (Desmond's name sake) and John Locke.

@Space Monk E. TOTALLY OFF TOPIC. (darn, now I'm really gonna be late.) Been wanting to catch up with you, I spoke to the old guys this weekend about letting you into the Order so that you could get one of our “cool” monk’s robes. I was able to work past the “girl” issue (quite frankly, some of the guys aren’t “too male”, if you get my meaning). They did have a problem with your having a husband, being a Supreme Ruler wannabe and not being into chores. That kind of blew your chances at taking the three solemn vows (poverty, chastity and obedience). It is quid pro quo, take those vows, and get a robe. Sorry. (I know some Buddhist monk, Chinese, not Tibetan but same color robes I believe. They are even more chauvanistic than the Roman C's, the women (nuns) do all the chores in their enclaves. Don't think you will have any luck there. Have you tried the Jedi's?)

@ flashest monk - by evil v. evil, I don't necessarily mean Ben v. Widmore, rather I allude to this impending war that has been referred to a few times. I do not think that Sawyer's vengeance excuses any action on his part, just an explanation of his intent in the acts that he committed. Vengeance is never a good excuse for doing more harm to others.
@fanolost - I think you may be right about it not necessarily be about redemption as a whole for the show, but making right the mistakes of those who came before us. I think that is something we can all learn from. But I think the redemption of the individuals attributes to the "making right" of the whole, you know what I mean?
@ Spacemonkey - haha! I find no significance to the "pinky raising" and "long fingernails" - I just love to point out the character quirks that makes me love this show all the more.

Flash: I think I might be near poverty, I have two young children already, so chastity is a given, and obedience is a slam dunk, as I am always telling people what to do and they obey. (in my mind) Also, I am not married to the whole Supreme Ruler thing. I mean, it doesn't even PAY! (I know, I was shocked!) I think there is a much better future in being a monk. i think about ethan going to the beach with ben it is always an issue of trust and loyalty. he obviously only trusted a few of his own people

remember about the girls down in the looking glass and everyone thought it was flooded/abandoned. so he only gives info on a need to know basis and most of the time he thinks you don't need to know.

with goodwin he just wanted him out of the way so there was a possibility of him dying so good opportunity to rid of competition for juliet.

so Ben figured out she had been on the island in the past and then later sent others to get her. richard and mittleos lab to recruit her for their infertility issue. who knows maybe ben made them all infertile to lure juliet there....wouldn't put it past him. ultimate manipulation

CAM: But I didn't notice! I just think it's cool. This is like watching with a bunch of people, but not having to feed them or share a bathroom.

Victoria: wow, I hadn't really put any thought into Ben creating the infertility as a lure. Huge, but possible. (For Lost)

@spacemonkey- OFF TOPIC- one last thing (almost forgot and people always ask). Under the robe, boxers never briefs.

But truly, I'm along for the ride. I like being right and love being wrong with my theories.

SO....with all that is happening on LOST, how about some "old" things to clear up....

1) Why was WALT so special in the beginning, and now it seems like we may have seen the last of him??

2) ROSE and BERNARD --- Where/when are they??? They had been time traveling originally.

3) VINCENT --- Long time, no see, no barking. Thought he was important as well (according to the writers)

4) Loved seeing the 4-toed statue in its entirety --- when will we see the front of it?

5) Why did SUN and KATE leave their children so quickly to get back to the island? Where are the children??

Ok, BIG Fan, but lately, your blogs have left me thinking...he just really doesn't want to do this anymore

Ok forgive me if I have stated something already talked about (I havent seen anything like it yet) or if I'm stating something extremely obvious...for which I'll be totally embarrassed...but I've come up with an idea - I feel like I am putting puzzle peices together in my head.

Here are some 'facts' regarding Farraday and how I think they tie together:
- Farraday is not with the Dharma group, as Sawyer already mentioned (we dont know for sure if he is still on the island) BUT
- we saw in another episode that he was in the Orchid in the past when it was being built (we assume he is time travelling)
This quick flash of Farraday in the Orchid as it was being built is in a scene with Dr. Marvin Candle (or whatever his real name is)
-in the video for the Orchid Candle mentions a mysterious INCIDENT.
Perhaps Farraday leaves Sawyer and the others and travels back in time to try to destroy the swan or instigate 'the incident' whatever it may be, maybe in an attempt to alter time?

Thoughts?

1. dunno about Walt. They don't bring him up at all anymore.

2. I think Rose/Benard are dead. They would of ran into someone by now. I think there will be a short recap on how they died in a further episode.

3. I think Vincent is around somewhere on the island. Possibly with the others? I think they will write him in reuniting with someone. A dog reunion always makes good tv

4. I think vincent will be on the face of the statue...haha...if he time traveled then maybe early settlers saw him then saw him disappear...a godlike quality?? you never know, it is lost.

5. I think sun's baby is just with her parents and Aaron is being used as a pawn right now. Ben probably told Kate that if she goes back to the island he will not hurt him or will guarantee him to stay safe.

don't you think Sun could of been married again since getting off the island? and maybe her baby is left with her new hubby? i think it's odd that she only showed the baby pic to kate when clearly her child was about 3. i mean these folks were only on the island together 100 days. off the island 1000+. a lot could have changed.

Here is a question...who is the next main character to die? My guess....Hurley...he doesn't do anything anymore besides say 'dude' all the time.

I like to think that Daniel is still on the island just a little off the grid from the rest of the time traveling losties who settled into dharmaville life. I think that his visit to the orchid was a part of this time flash they are stuck in. I do not think he is still traveling around in time apart from the others. Also, he could not go back in time to destroy the swan since it hasn't been built yet.

I am not sure what the "incident" is.... that is something that continues to intrigue me. hmmm... maybe it is what spurs on the construction of the swan to constrict the electronmagnetic powers that are beneath it.

Rose and Bernard will be back. They may have travelled into another timeline. I don't believe everyone skipped together necessarily. I think there was a wink and a nod to them with Sun fingering Jin's ring on the beach.

Vincent is coming back - and they should do an epi on how skipping was perceived by a dog "hey what's that nois..." "Hey what's that sm..." hey, etc.

I used to think the face on the statue would be Vincent, then Richard... now I'm back to Vincent.

@kitz - Faraday - I don't think he's lost his mind. I do think he's been playing with time altering machinery - James said something regarding him not being there (what was that line...). Some think it was meant as he's out of his mind - I interpreted it as he's off doing something in a different time.

Maybe the whole three years the 815ers have been playing house they've actually been changing, dismantling DI things they knew would be problematic in the future. It's hard to believe James et al have simply accepted living 30 years in the past, knowing what they know. Doesn't fit. JMO

@listy - sometimes it only takes a second for you entire life and perspective to change. 100 days on that island can still have more impact than 1000 days back in reality - knowing what they went through and what they left behind. JMO

Next up to get offed? My inclination is JULIET. A posted above that I think Jack will refuse to help little Ben, Kate will ask Juliet, Jack, in a fury will kill Juliet, thus setting James after him - and likely having Kate side with James, and Jack again loses 'power.' Because Jack (who is already starting to make trouble) shouldn't be top dog (that would be vincent...) and I believe that was one of the 'course going awry' issues from the 1st hundred days - Jack should not have been in charge.

I don't think they are done with Juliet yet. I think she is just victim of not being written in any good scenes right now. Kind of how Sawyer was up until just recently. She just knows too much. There are one too many doctors in dharmaville right now, maybe jack will go first??

@Sandy - my thinking is she may want time off after having the baby - thus killing her off provides a bit of drama, excitement for the 'I hate Juliet' clubbers, and keeps to the Lost saga that key characters are disposable.

Flashest Monk - Regarding the Ben vs Locke, which one is evil/which good discussion. I guess Locke's personal demeaner seems so much more sympathetic and pathetic and sometimes just beaten down and kicked around, compared to cold, manipulative, in control Ben. I guess its natural to "like"Locke better and thus see him as good.
I think there is no good vs evil dynamic going on, its pure survival of the cleverest.

Kitz - The Incident - Yes. That is what I'm waiting for. The harnessed power of the island gets unleashed in a big bad way and bites the DI hard on the a**. It changed everything for them. Farraday? Possible!

@Sandy - I can also see Hurley be the next one killed. He's funny & popular with the Losties, but his story line is pretty well non-existent, he doesn't have a major role on the island (unless you consider cooking major) and his death wouldn't have a negative effect on the story line going in to the last season. I can't see TPTB killing off a character that is integral to the storyline at this point.

My bet for the the next dead guy is....I don't know. One of the spoiler sites gives you a list of 5 people, and claims one of them is next. I can really only see 2 of the 5 being possible, and even then I am not sure. Should be interesting to see how they wrap the character up. I guess if I had to pick someone, I say Daniel. I think the time travel stuff will be basically done this season. Every season has a had a theme of sorts.

@cammies - I think Jack isn't on his game like he was in the beginning. He's had quasi-breakdowns, up until Ajira flight - he was back to drinking - I think in a rage, anything is possible.

They (the writers) have to realign Kate with someone - and she's not as yet. So having her go against Jack (again) fits. He won't help her, she goes elsewhere, and because Jack thinks he can change things by not helping little ben - he'll freak if Juliet does.

But I really think she's off because of her 'real life.' That and that I am not a fan and could do with a good buh-bye to Juliet for season 6.

Course they could kill off multiple characters...

Sandy and Space Monkey - Maybe Faraday dying when sacrificing himself to trigger the Incident and perishing in the meltdown or blowup or implosion or whatever is was/will be.

He has to be someone reincarnated or something of that nature. He's always been conveniently timed somewhere and one scene had him staring out from the tall grass watching, almost studying the Losties.

In the previews for this week, they show Juliet operating on Ben but not being able to get to the root of the problem.

She tells Sawyer they need a real surgeon to find the source of the bleeding and tells him to get Jack

Sawyer goes to get Jack and tells him the situation but Jack outright refuses to help.

Of course, the previews tend to be edited/taken out of order or context to throw people off but that's what it looked like to me.

Long time reader, first time poster. Sorry if this has been mentioned but am I the only one who is thinking that maybe it wasn't the family of Peter Avellino who hired the woman to detain Sayid but rather Widmore? It could have been a cover story to put suspicion away from Widmore. After all, how would Peter Avellino's family know it was Sayid who killed him?

And also, why would such a trained efficient killer such as Sayid not simply shoot young Ben in the head instead of in the chest. Or couldn't he at least have put another bullet in little Ben's head as he was walking past him. Either it was a fluky oversight that will cause Ben to survive or there must have been another purpose for Sayid not killing little Ben.

I gotta say when you write up lost late and with a bad grade the blog itself usually isn't great either. Not a criticism but you don't seem to put as much effort into it so feels a little half baked.

Chris the description for next (this!) week says that Kate undertakes drastic action to save ben's life when jack refuses to help.

@glee - Ohhh I wonder what she does? She's pretty good with a gun (stealing them and pointing them at people at least). So maybe she holds Jack at gunpoint to do the surgery?? That reflects what happened last time Jack operated on Ben. An interesting parallel.

LOST Zen Koan: What is the sound of one man "losting"? (where is everyone?) I had a chance to watch the episode where Harper Stanhope appears to Juliet in the jungle. There was definitely whispering before and after she appeared (she disappeared shortly after Jack appeared, with a gun, but after conversing with Juliet.) Also, there was rain on Harper's face so she was not an apparition or a projection. I think the Others have discovered how to transport themselves to places by bending or folding the space/time continuum. When they do this, the temporary rift that it creates leaks the whispers into the place where they have transported themselves. Whispers could be people that have also shared that piece of matter in different time (time is infinite, matter finite) could be other Others (maybe more than one is needed to accomplish this transport task.) Since we have seen translations of the whispers and some seem to be addressing people present to the transport, it could be it opens a portal to the dead (briefly.) That's my incomplete theory, needed to see a whisper scene again, looking forward to seeing another one soon.

Does anybody remember which episode had Locke and Boone walking in the jungle, and Locke tells Boone it's about to start raining - and then it does? Like he'd been in that 'time' before and knew the rain was coming? Actually, it may have been the other way around - the rain was going to stop and Locke knew it.

Re: Good vs. Evil - What I like best is that you can never be quite sure about who is evil or good, or is mostly evil, with good inside, or who will switch back and forth - I don't think the writers will fail to satisfy us at the end - I think we will know for SURE which side was which.

@ JEB - i just watched that episode recently, locke said it's going to start raining in about a minute....and then it did, and boone said "do they teach you to predict the weather at a box company?" if you rewatch season 1, there are actually a lot of times where locke seems to know all the answers, or happens to be in the right place at the right time. when season 1 originally aired, i thought locke was such a smug know-it-all, but watching it again i look at it totally differently, like he actually DOES know what's going on, maybe because he's been through it before?

JEB - not sure if you remember but Locke did this again last season after his group split from Jack's group.

@ Sandy - I totally forgot about that conversation. Somoen asked the other day, may it was you, if there was any other Book of Law that the book Richard showed to young Locke could've been besides the Old Testament. I mentioned the social contract philosphers, but this makes it seem like maybe it was the Old Testament.

Oh EKO - I really liked him and his complex nature. Season 2 is one of my favorites. I need to go back and watch the first couple of seasons and see if I notice things we naturally would have missed the first time around since we didn't know all that we know now.

Q: if ethan is amy's baby and she's part of the DI then how did he get recruited into the hostiles with ben?? is amy a hostile or was mikhail lying when he said he was the last of the DI?? and why would ethan go along with the gassing when his dad was killed along with everyone else?

My son and I just rewatched season one and two and I noticed something. The first time Eko sees the smoke monster he just stares it down. But when we looked at smokie you could see faces in the smoke, one was Yemi, his brother, some were Eko, and there was one of a woman, I don't know who she was, but it was interesting and I didn't notice it the first time I watched.

Daniel, so awesome--your Prince encounter. I too have up close and personal to the litttle genius, and he's gorgeous. I always refer to him as pretty like a girl. I have been a fan for years, so I don't blame you. Prince is probably about the only person I'd miss Lost for.

Anywho, I liked this episode. It wasn't too terribly exciting, but I liked it. I liked finally having a backstory on a young Sayid. But, then again I like anything about Sayid.

I don't think young Ben is dead. And for some reason, after reading your comment about the writers being backed into a corner....I now think Christian is a walk up the wall.

There's a lot we miss the first time around.
I watch from episode 1 through the current at the end of each season.

So they wrapped up Clementine, Aaron, Ben lives, Temple changing him forever, Jack is a loser, Kate and Sawyer no lingering feelings on behalf of Sawyer, it felt slow but it did explain enough and Miles and Hurley sound like us trying to figure out time travel. Solid B...

Jenn3...yes, the music does help. That is definitely one of the fine points of this show. This show is such a complete package and the music is definitely one of the elements that make truly superb.

Richards comment about Ben not remembering any of it explains why Big Ben didn't know the Losties in the future (it's weird calling the present the "future"). My question though is if Lil' Ben wasn't going to remember anything, then how did he know his dad mistreated him and thus kill him in the Purge???

I still want to know where Daniel Faraday is. Last we saw him in this timeline, he was carrying something to or from the Orchid station that was being built. What did Sawyer mean when he said "Daniel was gone" or whatever it was he said.

Maybe when Ben goes back to the DI (afer he is saved by the Temple), his dad freaks out on him again for taking his keys or just reverts back to being a shitty dad and thus Ben is right back to where he was. But it does explain how he does not remember Sayid but i am sure he will interact with the 815'ers so he uses his poker face all the time in the future but all of the 815'rs in 1977 we on the list so Ben knew this before.

@Ruthie - Good point about Ben remembering how his dad treated him but not the losties. He also remembered Annie as an adult.

Maybe part of The Others' plan is to do whatever to him and send him back to camp as some kind of covert infiltration; a "live among them" type of deal.

Maybe he remembers things that happen AFTER the Others have him and the Annie thing happened after he became an other and maybe his dad still treats him like crap after it too??

And Oh yes! I thought the same thing about Miles and Hurley's conversation about time travel. It sounds like us trying to figure it out! Loved the Back to the Future reference because it IS like that!

I think Richard saying Ben would "lose his innocence" was basically him saying Ben would come back "without a soul." I'm wondering if most of the others are dead too.

Fanolost....awww, I don't think the music is over the top at any time in this show and perfectly paced.

I kinda liked this episode. It answered a lot of questions but also created a lot more. One being, who was the woman in the grocery store who found Aaron? Could she be an older Claire or someone from the island trying to kidnap Aaron like they did to Walt?

Now that we know Richard can heal the dying but they lose their innocence and become one of "them", I think that is what happens to Ethan. I think he is in a life or death situation and Amy or Horace take him to Richard to save him and he becomes one of "them".

i've seen a few comments made about maybe the others are really dead, kinda of dead, ect...but wouldn't Miles have that picked up and said something about it?

also, i am wondering what people think may have happened to desmond... didn't eloise tell him the island was not finished with him? or did i imagine that?

re: smokie - someone above made teh comment that once the Others heal you maybe you lose your soul. And other people have talked about smokie being made up of the souls of the dead people (possibly even you, but I can't remember right now)but maybe smokie takes your soul whether you are dead or alive.....trade your soul to be healed? Which makes Abbadon - the guardian of the abyss (I think that was one of the meanings of his name) and the heiroglyphics on the temple kinda make more sense.

@ jb- I couldn’t agree with you more. I love that Miles and Hurley conversation about the Future. Anyone else think that maybe the writers of LOST have been trolling this BLOG and were using bits and pieces of our questions and theories to put that dialogue together. And to use Miles and Hurley, the two funniest guys in the LOST cast to discuss the future was so great (but maybe at the same time, mocking us a little? Shakespeare used to do that, write dialogue for idiots in a play discussing lofty topics.) One example that hit me right away was Hurley opening the scene by discussing Back to the Future as his basis for all knowledge regarding time travel. How many times have we blogged back and forth using scenarios from Back to the Future. We have even joked about it being the basis for all time travel theory. To have Hurley just throw that out was brilliant writing. If we didn’t know that that scene was probably written and shot last Summer, or for sure months and months ago, I would swear they have been trolling this blog site for the last few weeks and inserted our ideas into the episode. Brilliant writing.

So if Jack saved Bens life then this whole thing could have changed?

@ilovelost - I think there are two theories working here: one is that what is happening is the same 'ole and it's repetition. The losties have been here before etc.

the other is that they're changing the past (though from what we get hints from it appears this may not be so true, at least not for all the cast) by being in the 70s.

I don't think smokie will kill little ben. Maybe big ben (previews seem to have him at the temple... as it crumbles...)

@flashest monk - along with Kate and Sawyer, they had the ultimate decision - to let him die innocent or live soul-less.

So Ben is a product of 815er decisions - that's rich...

My take on next weeks preview is that the smoke monster in some way "judges" people. Perhaps by their actions, perhaps by their motives, perhaps by whether or not they have fulfilled their "destiny." It has consumed some, and let others pass. It will be interesting to find out more about old smoky. I laughed out loud at Miles and Hurley, too funny, sounds just like us!

Mile/Hurley - I still think though, the underlying part of this is that Miles thought he understood, but then Hurley punched a hole in 'his' theory - which is really Faraday's - and I think that is a problem... either Faraday's bad theory has caused all this, or he needs to start thinking differently (Miles goes to him...)

@ fanolost- I think that Miles' (Farraday's) theory about not being able to cange anything may be the reason that the losties have lived "contentedly" in DI for 3 yrs. They either felt like they couldn't effect anything, so why try, OR they have tried and it didn't work (Maybe to be shown in a future episode.) I really think the first theory is more likely, complacency is easier if you think that it is justified.

Maybe this is a stupid question but when Richard took young Ben, did he take him to the Orchid? I was expecting something more to happen and wasnt paying attention to his surroundings.....
